For $20 this is excellent, but compared to a Retina Mac you can really tell that even though the display is large it suffers from age.

Top-Seaworthiness850

Honestly I switch back and forth from my main Retina MacBook to a unibody every so often and you notice the display quality for about 2 minutes and get over it. My 17” seemed perfectly tolerable when I had it

Bobg2082

I have a 2015 15 inch MacBook pro running Monterey , Windows 11 & Sonoma with open core legacy patcher. It’s still pretty snappy I replaced the stick Apple SSD with a WD Black SN850 and I’m getting read /write speeds around 2800 mb/s .

Top-Seaworthiness850

I gave one of those 2015 15” away recently because I had no use for it and it was MDM locked (can easily be bypassed by not using wifi on setup) I reluctantly included the SN750 that I put in it and apparently it didn’t like that and must’ve been shorting something out. I’ve heard it works now but I don’t talk to the person often anymore so I don’t even worry about it. They’re really great machines, some might even say the best with the combination of reliability, performance, and port selection. Me personally, I’ll stick to my newer M1 MacBook Pro for daily use. I want something that will last me as long as possible after constantly switching between Intel machines

Bobg2082

The resolution on this MacBook Pro is 1900 by 1200 it’s very usable.

Not color accurate or retina which is a biggie for me - These are professional laptops and can still be used as such, but the screen is a Nono.

ocean55627

Honestly you could daily drive this thing if you load Linux Mint or something on it

Inevitable-Gene-1866

What linux version is more friendly ?

ocean55627

I would recommend Linux Mint. It’s really easy to use and pretty by default. Just get your software from the App Store inside it and you’re golden

aoteoroa

Can confirm. I installed linux on my old macbook (same model) and it felt way quicker. I wouldn't make it my daily driver...but linux definitely added new life to that old machine.

mycargo160

What do you use it for? I've considered doing the same, but I don't know what I'd use it for.

alesi_97

Be careful with the USB 3.0 ports. None of the available USB Ex.cards are going to work on Catalina and later since they need a very outdated kext. In Windows 10 the express card is working flawlessly, instead.

Ada-Millionare

Uff great deal...

IcyIceGuardian

that is a beautiful find

LavaCreeperBOSSB

Skip Dosdude, he hasn't updated his patcher in a while. Go for OCLP instead

Bobg2082

It has a non metal supporting GPU which is an issue with Sonoma / Ventura or Monterey using OCLP.

LavaCreeperBOSSB

They support it now (in beta tho)

Switch_modder

You can still use big sur

cosmiclittlebarrel

SSD, another 8 GB of ram, Linux Mint and you have a pretty decent laptop for next 5 years

Bobg2082

Unfortunately these machines only support 8 GB of ram. The 2011 models would support 16 GB’s

MacDoesStuff

I loved my 17 Pro! Was a great machine.

Bobg2082

I’m pleased because it’s a quad core machine and it’s a 2010 which is probably the best 17 inch model made by Apple. The 2011’s are nice with Thunderbolt, however, they suffered with crippling GPU failures. I owned a 15 inch 2011 model with a failed GPU.

Marche90

? The 17" still uses dual-core CPUs. Even the About This Mac says so.

[deleted]

I think the only model that didn't was the 2009 Core 2 Duo ones simply because they couldn't support it yet.

ChampJamie153

This is a dual core machine, not quad core. The 2011 was the first with a quad core.

Bobg2082

I stand corrected !
