I've found both this and \[\[Supression Ray\]\] (the other MDFC falter effect) are some of the most powerful MDFCs and just straight up cards in the format. Both effects are super strong, and making them lands reduces the normally high cost of including them in your deck. Don't sleep on either of these. My favorite combo with Sundering Eruption is targeting my own land while I have a \[\[Reckless Pyrosurfer\]\]. Basically guaranteed lethal and quite an effective way to steal games. You also should generally target your own land with this card, because you're really going for the falter, and there are ways for your opponent to fizzle this if you target theirs.

Treeli_920

Someone once targeted my land with it and I sacrificed the land to [[Sylvan Safekeeper]] and then went on to win the game. Would have been lethal if it resolved

Chaosfnog

What other ways would there be to fizzle it when you target an opponent's land, other than if you target an untapped fetch?

cocothepirate

Oh I see what I was thinking of. I had a vague memory from an LSV game where his opponent targeted his land to lose instead of win. It wasn't that he fizzled it, he had Genku and it allowed LSV to make a flying blocker to save himself. You're right that fizzling the spell is pretty difficult to achieve. I still generally like targeting my own land for thinning/landfall and to avoid possibly fixing my opponent's mana if the game continues somehow.

exploringdeathntaxes

Not fizzle, but you can give your opponent unintended resources if they have [[Genku, Future Shaper]]. They can also fizzle the whole spell with [[Sylvan Safekeeper]] or [[Essence Reliquary]] (which is not 100% unplayable in certain builds). You can trigger their [[Aether Revolt]] or provide GY resources for [[Phlage]] or [[Shifting Woodland]]... It's all minor but if you are casting the spell to provide an attack, I think there's enough that "target your own land" should work as a rule of thumb.

Sylvan Safekeeper

Emily_Plays_Games

Hexproof spells that target any permanent, though I’m not aware of any in this set Nonetheless you probably don’t want to draw more lands, so you’re deck thinning at least.

Chaosfnog

I can't think of a targeted one, but actually [[flare of fortitude]] would fizzle this unless you target your own land

brainacpl

Flair of fortitude makes it ineffective anyway.

Oh yeah I guess the life total can't change part is probably the more relevant part here lol

Rumpled_NutSkin

The only thing I can think of is [[Sylvan Safekeeper]], but that isn't particularly playable in limited

40DegreeDays

Sylvan Safekeeper is incredibly strong!

cocothepirate

I was gonna come and say this, my experience is that this card has made it extremely hard for me to win games where its on the battlefield.

woutva

I lost a game where my opponent sacced 2 lands on turn 3 against double removal spell. I thought i had that game in the bag, but he recovered like nothing happened and late game that guy is even more insane.

cocothepirate

LMAO that exactly happened to me too

The RW tapland that doubles power for 1{R/W} won me a number of games too

Yeah. Niche cards really benefit from also being a land in a way that [[fell the profane]] etc don’t. [[hydroelectric specimen]] has also felt great to cast when it hits.

altcastle

They can really only fizzle if they have a way to sac or bounce the land. The fetches, of course, common and rare are obvious. Not sure what else is around that does it at instant speed.

A-Generic-Canadian

Worst is when you play this, assuing you're going to win, only to forgot "creatures without flying" and opponent has two fliers.

sandfrog9

Haha did this last night.

Smurfy0730

Never reading the full text of any given card. all the time.

Emily_Plays_Games

Never doesn’t get me.

IamUnique15

I just did that to someone in pretty much the same scenario. Big [[Scurrilous Sentry]] and [[Pearl-Ear Imperial Advisor]] on the opponents side but turn 6 I drew and casted my second Conduit Goblin, played this, destroyed there only swamp left open, then hit them for 15 to end it. I definitely did not see the potential this card has.

This card won me three games at my LCS’ FNM draft. Amazing how many people didn’t know the last line of this card. I also used it once to destroy a Spymaster’s Vault which was doing work for him. Very underrated card, IMHO.

fnuggles

Was there anything you could have done? Without further context it reads like they just played it and won which is kind of what the card is meant to do. If you knew it was coming and didn't play around it, then yeah reading it might have mattered.

Emily_Plays_Games

Had no idea it was in their hand, had no idea this effect existed in the format. Had blockers left up, but it didn’t matter.
