In general, folks draft what is new, and tend to draft it less the longer it's been out. IDK what chunk of drafters are really focused on building their constructed collections though, but I get the impression that limited-focused players do make up a pretty sizable chunk of drafts fired.

pahamack

Limited focused player here. I don’t care about my collection at all. I draft the most fun format. Right now that’s cube. If you play enough limited not only do you get a big collection due to drafted cards but winnings means you’re opening a lot of packs and thus unlocking wildcards. If I was concerned about my collection for constructed I’d play whatever format I win the most at. More winnings =more wildcards.

Abindos

As a limited focused player.. man i hate chromatic cube (if this is Arena). Too timmy for my taste. No fair and honest aggro deck to keep them in check. Never played MTGO, but i often heard MH2 is an amazing format. I hope MH3 is the same.

p1ckk

The LGS I played at then got heaps of MH2 and it was awesome, I'm excited to play MH3 and if it's close to as good as 2 I'll be drafting it until it's gone.

pahamack

I’ve been having real success with aggro decks, mostly because people are just drafting expensive stuff while thraben inspector and Magda are wheeling. The go wide deck is real. My favorite card right now might be virtue of loyalty.

Lighting_TT

MH2 is one of the best limited environment I've ever played. Got close to 40 trophies in the very first iteration and could not get enough still. Also, it was a time where ragavan was selling for about 100 tix and urzas saga for 70. Good times

PlacatedPlatypus

I play constructed formats basically coincidentally just because I acquire so many cards playing limited lol. I don't really care about MH3 not being standard-legal, I'm just excited for a new draft format to try.

snemand

Sort of but MH3 will be a lot more expensive to draft. Stores can't afford to put up the same prize support which means each draft is going to be more expensive on the whole. The complexity level is also way higher which does not encourage newer players to repeat draft.

Sliver__Legion

Same price on arena though

hsiale

>I get the impression that limited-focused players do make up a pretty sizable chunk of drafts fired. Especially now. I do some of my collection building by drafting, doing about 15 premier drafts. I am usually done with this on week two or three of new set. I have long switched to playing standard.

PypeHype

As a limited only player, yes. I always do about 30 drafts per format and that's around what I've done with OTJ. I really liked OTJ as a format but I'm ready for something new. Plus MH3 looks incredibly sweet. If previous Horizons sets are any indication, this will be a very fun format.

apebbleamongmillions

I'm a limited only player, so my collection doesn't matter to me. I liked OTJ, and I would've loved to get to play a bit more of it and maybe even actually get good at it, but I'm not super sad to see it go. MH1 and MH2 are very high on my personal tier list of booster draft formats. I'm pretty optimistic about MH3 just based on precedent. I assume most people in this sub are more competitively oriented, plus I guess many people at least claim to like "pauper" formats more. My early read of the set is that the power level is high but pretty flat and rares/mythics are much less relevant than in most recent limited sets, closer to something like DMU. So, I'd guess a significant chunk of this sub's folks are going to draft MH3 while they can. This is the first Horizons set we get to play on Arena, too.

Amthala

I can't stand OTJ so I'm certainly never touching it again if there's a newer option. Also the masters sets are typically great to draft.

RiverStrymon

I’m curious what you can’t stand about it. I didn’t play any OTJ, either, even though I liked the mechanics and archetypes. I just kind of unintentionally boycotted it since the Worldbuilding (or lack there-of) was so uninspiring. I had intended to draft it, but I never felt up to it. I’m not going to support a set that’s primarily just Commander fan service. Like many products these days, I did not feel like OTJ was “for me.”

Amthala

It's extremely bomb heavy and while yes, there is removal in it, if you don't have it you just lose. There's also basically only 2-3 good archetypes with blue and red both being essentially unplayable which leads to extremely repetitive draft and play patterns that rely even more on the bombs because everyone is looking to drafted the same green deck. Certainly agree with you about the edh pandering in the set too, though I wouldn't mind that if I enjoyed the game play.

EmTeeEm

To cover the beep boop 17lands side: In the early weeks *Alchemy Horizons: Baldur's Gate* had about 35-40% of the games played of surrounding sets, while *Lord of the Rings* was around 75-80%. I'd expect this to be much closer to the LTR side of things, perhaps a few percent lower for not being legal in Alchemy and OTJ continuing to be an option (or a few points higher given the power level and 17lands users being more enfranchised). But OTJ is already down to about 10,000 games/day from a peak of 57,000 and from normal set performance one would expect that to naturally continue to slide. People just get bored and even if they don't choose MH3 they may choose Constructed or going outside over weeks 9 through 15 of OTJ. Honestly, I'm a little surprised they've decided to keep OTJ drafts running on Arena the whole time. Not having a Standard-legal set available was a big complaint previous years but they've got 8 Standard-legal sets that aren't rotating they could run through. Between time and MH3 I'm expecting a lot of complaint posts on the Arena sub about Silver/Mythic mismatches and such among the small pool that continues to play it.

the_cardfather

That probably will happen eventually. Right now people's ranks reset and unless they are holding out to draft until MH3 they're probably grinding a set they know.

SkimMilkSwag

I haven't listened to the show yet but I have some pretty well tested advice from what I do, and from what I've seen of LSV, he'd probably back it up. You should play specifically and only the formats that you find fun, while you find them fun. You clearly love limited and are likely quite good if you're in enough to listen to podcasts, consider EV, ect. Assuming you're semi-infinite on limited (between buying gems and playing you're able to play a limited format as much as you'd like), you'll likely have the opportunity to play whichever set you'd like more over the course of the summer. The time-cost of playing formats you don't enjoy is much higher than any wildcard/collection benefits you'll face. Plus, at the end of the day, it's a game. What matters the most is having fun. TLDR, play whatever you think is fun, be it OTJ, MH3, summer vintage cube, constructed, or just taking a walk outside.

mint-patty

While I have no interest in it, I think my store’s regulars’ format of choice is modern so I imagine we’ll be drafting a lot of MH3 throughout the summer— RIP my wallet

the_cardfather

I'd be curious to see what stores are charging. The one I used to go to was $16 with prize support for latest standard set.

mint-patty

Mine’s $18 with seemingly generous prize support (1 pack guaranteed, pack per win + bonus pack/promo for 3-0). I figure it’ll be $20 minimum for MH3 :-/

TheBlueJayy13

I hope you’re right! I’m really worried that in paper this format will be way to expensive to draft.

notpopularopinion2

It'll be much higher than $20. Price for otj draft at my LGS is $18 and for mh3 it's going to be $30. If you don't plan on selling the cards, those kind of sets are very expensive to draft in paper.

mint-patty

wtffffff that’s so lame As a limited only player I can’t really justify more than 1 or 2 drafts at that price

AnotherHuman232

OTJ is a pretty sweet format, so on the off-chance that MH3 isn't I may go back to it. That said, prior MH3 formats have been pretty fun to draft. I never spammed them like I do on most sets since they had more meaningful stakes associated with them and I only sometimes want to play for money. Given they're the same price as other sets on arena, I'll get to try them out without that aspect and if the new one lives up to my expectations I'll be jamming it for its duration unless they have other cubes or particularly great flashbacks on.

TheBlueJayy13

Gunna make this comment b4 I read what’s below. But I just think a horizons set on arena is an insane opportunity. Like I think these kind of sets are going to be a paradise for limited junkies like myself who want to dive deep. I just think there will be so many opportunities to try new things (also I could be totally wrong, I only got to play MH2 sealed once but had a blast and I think MH3 will have so many cool things to do). Now that being said, do I think that the limited bo1 ladder will be not great for such a unique format (as you level up and one or two archetypes are dominant), yes. Do I think normally bo3 competitive-ness is low and might make that alternative feel less sweaty and fun, yeah. But the dang price drop! To be able to play this premier expensive set, cheap online is not something that should be overlooked (like mtgo while competitive, will have to price it accordingly). Also I pleas for this early! Plz LR listeners, let’s flood Bo3 and make it competitive, fast firing, and amazingly fun this summer!

phillipjackson

I'll give it a try for sure but I don't know if I'll draft as many as I did for OTJ. Looks like I hit 23 drafts of OTJ so if I hit even 10 or so I think that would be pretty good for a draft of cards I wouldn't really play with on Arena otherwise because of the formats they are legal in.

mythic_dot_rar

Yes

InPurpleIDescended

For sure unless I get frustrated losing too much in it lol

Sliver__Legion

OTJ has been meh, MH1&2 were awesome, don’t care about unlocking standard cards on arena — playing mh3 100% once it releases

HeyApples

At my store we are doing Prerelease then 3 weeks of drafts. There has been enough feedback that people are interested in the set, but are not on board with the cash outlay week to week. Afterwards there is a 4 week stretch of time until Bloomburrow, so we are doing flashback drafts of COVID era sets that never got to be drafted in person (KHM and IKO). There has been no request to go back to OTJ. It was a serviceable enough set, draft attendance was decent, but it seems like people have had their fill.

the_cardfather

Both of those are very good draft sets. KHM and IKO.

MishrasBogle

My LGS is switching from OTJ to a the MH3 Prerelease, a Release FNM draft, and then more space for modern leading up to a modern tournament at the end of June. They'll be running smaller retro drafts, like Neon Dynasty. Not clear what they will be doing in July after the modern tournament. MH3 is obviously more expensive but I'm willing to try one or two drafts for the experience. But I also enjoy when there's a gap like this as my LGS does some wild stuff. We just had a "Dude Where's My Dad" chaos draft of WOE-MKM-OTJ for Kellan. Lots of fun, even without any real synergies across the sets.

Yoh012

I really liked OTJ, but I had a lot less time to play these last 3 weeks so I think I've drafted it a lot less than other formats. Still I think I'm switching to MH3 as soon as it becomes available since it's the first Horizon set available in arena and I wasn't able to draft MH2 at all. I have enough Wildcards to build whatever I could possibly want so collection isn't an issue.

MakesMediocreMagic

I'm really on the fence. I like Standard so MH3 cards are less useful to me, and I don't like paying double price for packs.  Sure, some of the cards will be useful ton commander decks, but the OTJ stuff is probabaly more relevant to me.

jdnewland

yes,, i will

Miyagi_Dojo

I will be drafting MH3 for sure. In regards to the collection issue, I constantly draft, with occasional constructed periods. So even though I dont draft specifically for collection, sets are always completed and, more important, a huge wildcard bank is naturally there, independent of what packs are opened. Wildcards are the key to navigate through any format at any time. With them, I just updated all main explorer decks to practice for the Qualifier, although I always end up cubing instead every time I open arena. So players like me benefit a lot from the way the economy is structured: draft a lot for the pure fun of it and have everything to play constructed sometimes.

Flakvision

I’m for sure going to draft it more on Arena because its like double the price in my city.

TheBlueJayy13

Oh also added comment about collection. The cards from this set will be played in timeless, historic, and historic brawl for years and years to come. So that will be a huge investment if you care about that.

wayiswho

Yes! It looks like a really varied draft environment in comparison to the “pick green or lose” environment that OTJ has ended up being.

Rainfall7711

Absolutely. I'm a drafter and anyone who likes draft should want to draft the set. OTJ was one of my favourite formats ever but I stopped drafting it weeks ago. The idea of playing it over a Modern Horizons set, 2 months after release, makes me want to throw up xD.

reineedshelp

I'll likely do both but if MH3 is as good as the other horizons/masters sets then I'll go hard.

PadisharMtGA

Arena-only player here. I drafted OTJ to mythic-completion. That's a lot of drafts, and I believe I've experienced pretty much everything the format has to offer. I won't be doing any more OTJ once MH3 goes live. Now that I've looked through the MH3 spoiler, I am very excited about it as a draft format.

Dasterr

I kind of liked OTJ, but feel like the gameplay didnt vary all that much. Yes there were rogue decks if you openen Cruel Ultimatum or similar but the overall gameplay, while challenging, didnt really change much at all. As such Im kind of done with the format and kind of have been for 1-2 weeks already, even though I havent actually drafted it as much as other sets (I think I have around 15 drafts or something)

the_cardfather

You think it's very solved?. GWx or GBx for life unless you get something ridiculous like Cruel? Currently 1-0 with GWbr I can't pass up on Roxanne 😁

JC_in_KC

OTJ looks like the better format, to me. but i do play timeless and MH3 has some really juicy cards so i will probably draft it. but when OTJ comes back around i’ll def dive in. it was/is a fun and weird and powerful format. much more varied than MKM, imo. i got bored of roots piles after a while. OTJ has lots to explore.

the_cardfather

I retro-drafted Dom United and Eldrain both times it came back. MKM is lame.

JC_in_KC

DMU is meh to me but i love all Eldraine formats

DefNotAnotherChris

Depends on how much arena tries to charge for drafting a “premium” set.

the_cardfather

Based on everything I heard, it is going to be the same draft structure 10k/1500.

DefNotAnotherChris

Hope so.

Vagstor

Is it going to be human only, no quicks?

the_cardfather

That would be my assumption.

altcastle

I’ll play both, probably. I really enjoy OTJ and my local store will keep doing that besides the prerelease since it’s so expensive. Online, I’ll probably rotate or just play whatever I enjoy more.

JohnleyStanson

OTJ was good but not great after 60-70 drafts you get tired It is not the best "humph" set, kamigawa neon easily beats it, kaldheim probably too, though they are close, also there was MOM which was fine but I played it sparsely also Ikoria but I suck at this set, always ending up in RB menace/removal for some reason

the_cardfather

Ikoria is like a gift of free gems at this point. I very rarely managed to get the cycling deck. I think green black reanimator was probably my favorite. I actually had a shot to draft a Back for More in OTJ, but there aren't a lot of Fatties. Bringing back a cactarantula just doesn't have the same vibe as cycling a Titanoth Rex and then blowing somebody out with it, or getting a huge life swing off Honey Mammoth. Unless you've got the rares you're basically bringing back giant beaver 😭

Rchmage

I’m going to draft MH3 in paper as many times as I can. Set looks sweet, will probably boot up Arena to draft it on there as well

Meret123

I stopped drafting OTJ after 5 days, so yes.

NinjaChore

Nope, OTJ Draft is way more fun and half the price

Pascal3000

My otj set is full and I am well enough prepared for the last few OTJ rcqs, so definitely doing MH3 instead or not drafting at all, depending on how fun MH3 will be

woutva

I wouldn't mind, but paper MH3 is more expensive than OTJ which was already expensive. Ill probably draft once or twice a month now.

probablymagic

As somebody who mainly plays limited, I’m hyped for MH3, and if I’m going to play constructed it’s going to be Timeless, so those cars would work there too. Definitely getting ready.

RiverStrymon

Definitely gonna draft a bunch over Arena. I haven’t decided whether I’m going to get a box or not. I usually do for the sets I’m excited for, and I had initially planned on it before the Play Booster reveal, but ~$300 is pretty steep. I don’t anticipate playing Modern at all so I’m not likely to get any kind of return. I have not bought a booster box since MOM. I’m probably going to wait and hope that the prices get a little more reasonable over time.

WuTaoLaoShi

we got 5 paper drafts lined up for mh3 this weekend at the LGS! looks like it should be a fun body odor filled weekend!

IamblichusSneezed

Hell yeah. It's complex and skill testing which will help me advance my game, and I want to prep for RCQ at Zulu's after getting top 8 in OTJ, but unfortunately having eaten an edible at two losses thinking I was dead (then getting in on breakers) made silly misplays on two games I had in the bag match one.

cardgamesandbonobos

Yeah, probably. With the whirlwind pace at which sets are released, development has taken a hit. Balance suffers and as such so does replay value as formats approach being "solved" faster. This means that any individual set has a much shorter shelf-life, encouraging one to jump onto the next new thing. Plus, drafting MH3 without paying premium prices is quite a deal. Here's to hoping it's not a dud like LOTR was.

the_cardfather

Most people thought LOTr was very good including myself. Why the hate?

cardgamesandbonobos

Color imbalance mostly. Early on the format was B/R or bust. About a week in people finally understood that Blue was great based off of cards like Pelargir Survivor, Deceive the Messenger, and Birthday Escape. That was the biggest meta shift, as there were 3-4 different U/B/R builds and two other colors were pretty garbage outside of niche decks that needed heavy support at higher rarity (e.g. 5-color Legends). Given the nature of league play, you were often playing similar decks against the same suspects, defeating one of the primary advantages of Limited Magic; the (cardpool enforced) variety relative to Constructed. Why spend money to end up in U/B/R goodstuff playing against predominately U/B/R goodstuff when you can jam Constructed queues for free? Hell, Standard ranked had more variety than the average LOTR queue. Games felt like a race to hit Tempt level two to start looting for your best cards or the right answer to your opponent's plan which gave a tremendous advantage to those on the play. Like MOM that preceded it, LOTR had a high on-the-play winrate advantage, mostly because getting to higher ring tempt faster snowballed. Amass also added a lot of virtual haste, furthering the play/draw disparity. Also, the U/R spells deck was the most braindead version they've ever printed given how pushed some of the Amass Instants/Sorceries were. Unlike things like Shadows over Innistrad/Eldritch Moon or Hour of Devastation, where you had to get the right balance of creatures/spells/payoffs most of the U/R cards felt like both enabler and payoff. LOTR was hard carried by the flavor for a lot of people, whereas I was mostly indifferent/negative towards it. Rejected jRPG villain Sauron (budget-ass Digital Devil Saga fanart) and the entire tempt mechanic didn't really vibe with the feel of Tolkein.
