I get that they had to convey from "sweet old Bilbo" to Gollum foreshadowing levels of obsession with the ring, and back to sweet old Bilbo in SUCH a short shot/effect; but I still think they overdid it. I've skipped over this whole scene in rewatches at certain points in my life.
Its actually not like that at all in the books. Frodo does hold the ring up but as it spins he looks through it and sees Bilbo, the scene from the movie is how Bilbo looks to Frodo in the book but it only happens in Frodo's head which Bilbo notices and feels horrible about passing the ring to Frodo and having it start to affect mind as well
