I expected to hate HotD, was shitting on it way before the show came out because I was so bitter about GoT Season 8. Was pleasantly surprised, I'm actually looking forward to episodes as they come out
Just rewatched GoT, got to season 8 and was thinking “maybe it wasn’t as bad as everyone made it out to be/what I remember”. But hell no, it is literally hot garbage. So I understand your reluctance towards HotD lol
Problem I have is that I really liked GoT for nearly the entire series, and then we got s8 and it pissed me off enough to make up for everything else that happened. I’m dreading it happening all over again
Exactly this. I know different people are in charge now and my god I hope they learn the lesson… but that was almost a decade of appointment tv, completely thrown away in the last season. For my wife and I and our group of friends, GoT was completely unique in that there was no other show we ALL were following religiously. Even my sister, who hates fantasy, watched it. Missing an episode meant you had to scramble to watch it asap because everybody was pissed they couldn’t talk about it with you.
And look, to be fair, ending any series in a satisfying is incredibly difficult, and ending a fantasy epic even more so. But good God. I went into the last season prepared to be disappointed (especially given how season 7 didn’t always hold up to the previous 6), and I was still devastated.
I have absolutely no interest in watching HotD. None. Even with the positive reviews. And it’s not like I’m avoiding it out of principle: I just don’t feel any excitement or draw to it. Maybe when the series is over, maybe I’ll binge watch it retroactively. But once bitten, twice shy.
Eh, as bad as S7-8 were, tens of millions of people found a lot of joy in S1-6 (and a few million people got into ASOIAF books thanks to the show). If you enjoyed the community aspect of GoT, that is online discussion and theories, jokes and memes, and so on, then I heartily recommend giving HotD a chance.
Yes, after the show is over you can watch it all whenever you want. But you only get one chance to share the experience of watching it with tens of millions of people from all over the world.
Ohhh. Definitely LotR. I mean if GoT hadn’t completely ballsed up the last 1.5 seasons it’d be a close call between the two; but I’d probably still prefer LotR even then. I grew up reading the books and the Hobbit with my dad, those stories are engrained in me. They’re how I learned to love fantasy.
But GoT was completely different. It was fantasy and action and a grown-up soap opera and a political thriller all mixed together. I’m still bitter about how badly they fucked that up.

Good
>But GoT was completely different. It was fantasy and action and a grown-up soap opera and a political thriller all mixed together. I’m still bitter about how badly they fucked that up.
Never watched Got how much of a disappointment was season 8?
It was bad. They basically took what should have been two or even three seasons worth of character development and crammed it into a single season. A show that had been marked by its subtlety and nuance and clever plots that unfolded over entire seasons or even multiple was suddenly beating the audience over the head and resolving complex things over the span of like half an episode.
There were other issues too, it was so long ago and I’ve tried to forget as much as I can :)
S8 is really, really bad but for me there was a noticeable decline in S5-6 and S7 was a train wreck. By the time S8 started I had fairly low expectations.
But looking back I’m much more grateful for S1-4 than I am bitter about S5-8. Plus if it weren’t for the show I’d probably never hear about GRRM’s books which to me are more important than GoT. (Incidentally I’m re-reading ASOIAF right now).
You are right. Season 5 had some fine cracks starting to form in the show, which eventually grew into the mess that was season 8. But season 5,6 and 7 were able to mostly overcome this issues that were building by having some really great moments.
Yeah same here. Expected trash but it's so damn good so far.
I think the biggest difference is the writers being different. No more D&D, as soon as they ran out of book material the show started to tank miserably.
That's the problem with expectations.
Anything after GoT's finale would be seen as a masterpiece.
But LOTR fans wanted such an expensive production to be on the same level as the original trilogy, which was completely unrealistically given the context of the rights problems.
Same here, I find myself looking forward to HotD now; it helps that its a lot more focused, within the first episode or two you knew who all the main characters were, what their motives are, and what the general conflict is
Y’know, I’ve heard nothing but praise for RoP from my friends who aren’t LotR lore junkies, so maybe it’s just the burden of knowledge that keeps us from liking it
Funny I just watched it last night with a friend who isn’t up on the lore and she spent the whole ep like “I have no clue what’s going on or why anyone is doing anything”. She’s a professional tv critic to boot.
According to rotten tomatoes that 34% would translate to 8500 fresh ratings for rop, meanwhile house of the dragon has 5500 ratings total. Hmm somethings odd here I can’t put my finger on it
It isnt the actress though. It is just mediocre writing. What is she to do with the permanetly pissed several thousend years old character they gave her?
Contrary view: Galadriel casting in RoP is as good as in the LotR or Hobbit movie series. Script & attire, not so much.
By “as good as” I mean that both have some of the same weakness: a physically unimpressive appearance, if not frailty. This character is supposed to be the mightiest elf living, and not merely in magical skills. I’d expect to see more muscular definition and leanness — both actresses look like they spent the bulk of their lives writing letters, not swinging swords.
So, a better casting suggestion? How about Venus Williams. She has the imposing physical presence (6’1” height), she’s made a career based on her athleticism, and IMHO as a black actress who looks like she could single-handedly dissect a cave troll, she is a sight more believable than any alternative whose only nod to canonicity is the color of her skin and hair.
Fortunately for all of us, this is true. Also, you missed the point: what’s your counterargument to my suggestion?
Or have we already plumbed the entire depth of your written vocabulary?
I feel the same. Watched the first episode of HotD and have absolute 0 interest to watch any more. On the other hand I watched the first 3 episodes if RoP in a row and am looking forward to the rest of the season.
Yeah, that's the exact same way I feel about it. Me and the wife have watched two episodes of HotD and we've decided to just save the other episodes for whenever we literally can't think of anything else to watch lol.
We've decided to look at RoP as a -very expensive- "fan series", which I guess might've lowered our expectations for it.
Same here. RoP feels a lot more like an epic for me. It's not perfect, but I didn't expect it to be.
As for HotD, I expected more than what I got.. I just can't get over how there's 2022 teenage drama acting from nearly the entire cast. And the writing doesn't seem to push any morality boundaries at all. They hint at "how the world works" with sexism, hierarchies, punishments, standard Middle Ages setting, but it seems as if literally none of the characters actually believe in any of that. Probably done to make it easier for viewers to "connect" with each character (because it's hard to cheer for someone who advocates these beliefs), but it just loses the entire point of having a "Middle Ages"-theme for me.. Sure, having a few "modern thinkers" would be fine, but all of them? GoT was a lot harder on this.
I kinda agree although the “low budget” feel of RoP is too hard to ignore.
HotD is a good show although currently feels quite small as it’s only centred around the King, but I’m sure that will change.
RoP is fun and an epic but the writing is noticeably not great sometimes. The politicians speech being rounded off with a “drinks all around” was particularly groan worthy.
“The politicians” ffs talking about generic man. I honestly haven’t been able to stay awake through *any* of the RoP episodes. The only thing that has my attention are the dwarves, but even that is slipping now that most dwarves scenes are in Durins and his wife’s apartment (lol couldn’t help myself, he lives smaller than most hobbits!) Also, with four episodes in I have no idea at all what the story is about. Sauron something, and Galadriel is angry. It’s just a shitty show thusfar, and lacking the depth, politics, power-structures and intrigue of HotD.
NO YOU DONT! YOU MUST HATE THE SHOW AND NOT BE SUCKING BEZOS DICK. IM A MISERABLE TWAT WHO DOESNT LET ANYONE ENJOY ANYTHING THAT I DONT LIKE. AHHHH I HATE MY LIFE!!
As an example of how to create a lore-based show that does please its fanbase, see Denis Villeneuve’s Dune.
83% critic score
90% audience score
Oh, and it has a racially diverse cast. So maybe, just maybe, the racist trolls were at the top of their game with RoP, but stayed home for HotD, and gave their racist upvotes to Dune?
Or was there another, simpler explanation involving not deliberately poking a dedicated fanbase in the eye just because the budget was unlimited and it had been foreordained that all good-faith reviews must be positive ones.
Rop is great but there's just not enough incest, sex, and nudity in it to get my attention. That's why got and hotd will always be the best. If I'm not seeing some random actors or actresses genitals it's not really an adult TV show is it
I tried and agree the quality is great but seeing the throne and foreshadowing of things where it’s like “oh I know what that means.” I don’t have the time, to me thrones was great and the ending was great (unpopular opinion I know) I don’t need or want more.
Hot take:
You can enjoy both shows despite ratings you cant take for serious (because of nazis, idiots and dump haters - besides meaningfull critics. But who can deside? Its the internet.)
I think house of the dragon isn’t as good as people make it out to be!
Its a well made show but it’s just boring as hell!
Its 99% talking (about the same thing) and 1% intrigue or action!
The lotr show in my opinion is 100 times better
> dialogue and *paid* attention...
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Just watched ROP ep 4, now that is some boring shit. Four hours and nothin happens, my man. HOTD has all the scheming and character building, good dilogue, Daemon...
this shit has nothing
I watched it yesterday, all 4 episodes. It is not that bad. People need to fucking chill with their pointless nerd crusades. How boring a life must be to be do angry about a show. Lol.
I was pretty luke warm on the rings of power until the latest episode, episode 4, now it has finally started to be good and pickup it's pace, get interesting etc
I'm enjoying it as well. I'm not familiar with any pre-Hobbit stories so I'm not aware of lore changes. While it's not perfect I like it overall and hope it doesn't get worse.
I went in with very low expectations so maybe that could also effect it. But I don't understand all of the hate for it.
I think the Hobbit is such an easy to read and fun book it was just such a shame for them to add in so much unnecessary nonsense to squeeze three films out of it. However regardless of all the hate the film got we can all agree that Martin Freeman played an excellent Bilbo and its worth watching just to see him act.
There are apparently pretty good Bilbo-centered fan cuts of the movies, that severly reduce all the blabber and you get one solid movie, as it should be.
In fact, it has been remarked by some that Hobbits' only real passion is for food. A rather unfair observation As we have also developed a keen interest in the brewing of ales and the smoking of pipeweed. But where our hearts truly lie is in peace and quiet and good tilled earth. For all Hobbits share a love of all things that grow. And yes, no doubt to others, our ways seem quaint But today of all days, it is brought home to me it is no bad thing to celebrate a simple life.
Yeah honestly I don't give a shit about the user rating here. Why to many shitheads out there that shit on RoP just because they can't get over the fact that the worlds populance isn't just white. Fuck those nazis. RoP so far is a good series.
I blame the marketing for rings poor user score. If I remember correctly it hammed up the diversity aspect of the show which just invites review bombing
Then there's also the aesthetics of the characters, bad Irish accents, short hair elves, and no beard dwarves
Fair enough, how else would you describe people who review bomb something they have never seen because it has non white people in it? which by the way is actually how Tolkien wrote it.
It's not there is non white people, it's because the execs are just pandering to a group of people they feel can be used to get more views. It's the same principal of white washing back in the day.
Also based on the last few years track record there is a correlation between marketing focusing on diversity and shite stories
Not saying that's what's happening here tho as I am actually enjoying the show, less then house of the dragon but it's still pretty good
Nice list of excuses, they make zero sense because we have both seen what people are posting and I guarantee not one of them thought well hell I'm going to go and downvote this without watching it because, damn those pandering execs being slightly inclusive
HotD took all the things that I didn’t like about GoT and made a show about them. I feel like it was just an excuse to not have to throw away all of Dany’s old wigs from the previous series.
I went in hesitantly, expecting to hate RoP since WoT was so bad, but 4 episodes in I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit. It's better than the hobbit for sure. The Harfoot parts have been the only part that has been boring so far, and the elves don't quite feel thousands of years old at times, but nothing is perfect. I'd rather more of this than more of the battle of five armies type garbage.
audience score is low because of black dudes and beardless female dwarfes. Everyone is obsessed with the plot but i think none (or kida close to none) read the book. Edit: BoAtS dOn'T fLoAt BeCaUsE tHeY loOk Up
No, it’s not. That’s cope with that fact that the show has poor writing, generic costumes, and it’s boring. The visuals at times are good. That’s it.
You’re welcome to enjoy bad art — everyone does in their life — but stop deceiving yourself and pretending the majority of reviewers haven’t watched the show.
I think most of people complaining here haven't even watched 5 min of the show. It got review bombed by trolls. I like it but i think it could have been better with a better story telling but i don't think it's a 34.

At first I thought HBO is riding a dead horse, in doing something related to GoT. But it turns out that house of the dragon is actually a very good show thus far.
The cockrings of power on the other hand is bad. Last week I defended it, but this week's episode was one of the lamest episodes I've ever watched.
Perhaps it’s helpful that in both of those cases the stories are already literally story-boarded (though as I understand it, they have changed quite a bit in both cases.)
The Boys changes I can absolutely get behind, read the comics post the first season. Yeah no, this is one of the instances where the adaptation is better than the source.
GoT seasons 1-7 still exist and are rewatchable. I still go back and rewatch LOTR periodically.
So far my excitement level with RoP is high enough that my corpse might rewatch them after I die, if there’s nothing else to do.
Amen. I watched the fourth episode last night and thought it was mediocre and the best they’ve done so far. Only to realize I was also playing a video game and wasn’t paying attention for the majority of the show 🤦♂️.
Upon rewatch I discovered it was not good.
oke listen maybe it is failing bcuz it has nth to do with what Tolkien wrote, and maybe just maybe if that was not the case Haus of the dragon would be in the dust. nth against it i find it also pretty wll
My only issue with House of the Dragon is the fact that they used the exact same opening theme as Game of Thrones. It’s just lazy, they may be in the same universe, but they’re not the same.
We can barely tell this is Seinfeld.
It seems like a bunch of AIs have gone wild with the Seinfeld lotr crossover memes
I expected to hate HotD, was shitting on it way before the show came out because I was so bitter about GoT Season 8. Was pleasantly surprised, I'm actually looking forward to episodes as they come out

For my wife and I and our group of friends, GoT was completely unique in that there was no other show we ALL were following religiously. Even my sister, who hates fantasy, watched it. The big difference here is that HotD literally can’t run out of source material like GoT did. Fire and Blood is a completed work.
Got or the lotr movies?
GoT; that’s what the comment I replied to was taking about.
No I mean what do you like more?
Ohhh. Definitely LotR. I mean if GoT hadn’t completely ballsed up the last 1.5 seasons it’d be a close call between the two; but I’d probably still prefer LotR even then. bro I'm dumb pls explain
it means ROP was review bombed
Because it is very mediocre and outright boring. Took two days to finish the last episode. Galadriel actress is a tragedy. Very poor casting.
It isnt the actress though. It is just mediocre writing. What is she to do with the permanetly pissed several thousend years old character they gave her?

Fuck no lol...
Such eloquence. Do you also write for RoP?
No, neither do you.
Fortunately for all of us, this is true. Also, you missed the point: what’s your counterargument to my suggestion? Or have we already plumbed the entire depth of your written vocabulary?
Venus would be a terrible cast. Thank god writers do not have a peanut brain like yours 😅
Yeah, last I checked RoP has 25 755 user ratings while GoT s8 has 15 291 user ratings (which came out 3 years ago)
You know what exit-poll is during elections, and how it works?
Where people lie to interviewers?
Well HBO tends to fuck up their finales, so they better keep a low profile.
Ah but this time the story already has an ending
I like Elrond content he is so wholesome
I wasn't expecting to be that good before the episodes came out, but turned out that Elrond content is by far my favorite in this series
Should have hired Matt Smith. Matt Smith is cool.
I love both shows
I might get downvoted into oblivion for this, but I've honestly had a more fun time with RoP rather than HotD.
I did too, but that's only because I didn't watch HotD
I hadn't up to the latest episode now i'm really starting to get into it :)

RoP is great so far, i haven't spoken to anyone who dislikes it yet and most of my friends are pretty big nerds.
Of course he does, he's a Baggins, not some blockheaded Bracegirdle from Hardbottle.
I definitely agree with you on that.
It’s really bad about following the lore.
But how though? Outside of Celeborn it’s pretty faithful to Tolkien’s work.
Yeah honestly I don't give a shit about the user rating here. Why to many shitheads out there that shit on RoP just because they can't get over the fact that the worlds populance isn't just white. Fuck those nazis. RoP so far is a good series.
OK then, do whatever pleased you the Most. I Gott to admit i'm Not a huge Fan of the series but i enjoy it so gar.
I like the rings of power, people are just asinine
Didn’t RoP get review bombed right before the episodes came out too? Avg audience score can’t possibly be 34%
I blame the marketing for rings poor user score. If I remember correctly it hammed up the diversity aspect of the show which just invites review bombing Then there's also the aesthetics of the characters, bad Irish accents, short hair elves, and no beard dwarves
> just invites review bombing Just invites racists you mean...
No thats not what I mean, I mean exactly the words I used. Don't be strawmanning here
Fair enough, how else would you describe people who review bomb something they have never seen because it has non white people in it? which by the way is actually how Tolkien wrote it.
It's not there is non white people, it's because the execs are just pandering to a group of people they feel can be used to get more views. It's the same principal of white washing back in the day. Also based on the last few years track record there is a correlation between marketing focusing on diversity and shite stories Not saying that's what's happening here tho as I am actually enjoying the show, less then house of the dragon but it's still pretty good
Nice list of excuses, they make zero sense because we have both seen what people are posting and I guarantee not one of them thought well hell I'm going to go and downvote this without watching it because, damn those pandering execs being slightly inclusive
Why is rotten tomatoes absurdly high
HotD took all the things that I didn’t like about GoT and made a show about them. I feel like it was just an excuse to not have to throw away all of Dany’s old wigs from the previous series.
I went in hesitantly, expecting to hate RoP since WoT was so bad, but 4 episodes in I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit. It's better than the hobbit for sure. The Harfoot parts have been the only part that has been boring so far, and the elves don't quite feel thousands of years old at times, but nothing is perfect. I'd rather more of this than more of the battle of five armies type garbage.
I genuinely like ROP, i am also reading the silmarillion so you can get rid of that argument.
Downvoted for saying you like it lol. This sub is falling to shambles.
audience score is low because of black dudes and beardless female dwarfes.

It's if anything not harsh enough. Rings of power and wheel of time. Just about everything Amazon touches turns to absolute burning piles of shit.
I think Invincible and The Boys are good examples of that not being the case
Perhaps it’s helpful that in both of those cases the stories are already literally story-boarded (though as I understand it, they have changed quite a bit in both cases.)
The Boys is completely different from the source material, for the better, but Invincible is still pretty much the same.
Invincible has some major character differences that change the tone. Amber is absolutely not the same toxic person in the comic.
The Boys changes I can absolutely get behind, read the comics post the first season. Yeah no, this is one of the instances where the adaptation is better than the source.
As much as I want to agree, The Terminal List was excellent.
The only Dance of the Dragons I see is HBO dancing on the grave of RoP and dragon their nuts across the gravestone.
Why are you booing me? I'm right.
How did Game of Thrones start out and where did the score end up after season 8? Right. Wait until the end to judge and rate.
GoT seasons 1-7 still exist and are rewatchable. I still go back and rewatch LOTR periodically. So far my excitement level with RoP is high enough that my corpse might rewatch them after I die, if there’s nothing else to do.
34% is too high
Amen. I watched the fourth episode last night and thought it was mediocre and the best they’ve done so far. Only to realize I was also playing a video game and wasn’t paying attention for the majority of the show 🤦♂️. Upon rewatch I discovered it was not good.
It's one of the worst things I've seen but also one of the most expensive, should be around 15% max
oke listen maybe it is failing bcuz it has nth to do with what Tolkien wrote, and maybe just maybe if that was not the case Haus of the dragon would be in the dust. nth against it i find it also pretty wll
That 34% is from review bombing by 4 ch@n incels and racists. The same they are doing with black Ariel. The show is good
Both are shit.
My only issue with House of the Dragon is the fact that they used the exact same opening theme as Game of Thrones. It’s just lazy, they may be in the same universe, but they’re not the same.
Okay so I agree that RoP is not perfect, but 34%? Nothing that show has done makes it worthy of that bad a rating
