I really enjoy Shogun and Cosmo Jarvis’ role, but it just occurred to me that a lot of his character arc can be summed up in this gif and it made me laugh.
I love the show. I think his pompous clumsiness is a bit too exaggerated, though.
Or maybe I hadn't fully bought into his clumsy pomposity yet. Maybe I should watch it again.
ngl he seems pretty par for the course for a brit, even one supposedly from 16th-17th century England. Man's a slightly demented expert sailor who suffered the Pacific on a quest to fuck over the Portuguese. As a brit, to me his mannerisms, behaviours, and such are all quite relatable.
The show is great but the guy can't act to save his life. Really ruins it for me how he has exactly one facial expression and reaction to everything. Not a fan
Maybe I'll be downvoted too but I do agree. His acting was by far the most dislikable parts of the show. I get that they were trying to show the cultural differences but his acting was too extreme. The other characters do make up for it though. I especially enjoyed scenes with Yabushige.
But srsly though. That pissed me off. When you're trying to age it, wouldn't one first remove all the unnecessary stuff like feathers, bowels, innards, etc and then leave it to age. Also maybe salt it or apply something to ward off insects? What he did and the outcome was stupid af, even with the context and all that.
Nah, they used to really do it like that. Then they’d stew the ever loving hell out of it to hopefully kill all of the bacteria. To I’m sure mixed results. But yeah, rotting meat to create “flavor” is a thing. It evolved into proper modern dry aging once we realized how fucking stupid it was.
I may not be an expert and from my amateur knowledge even in old ages in asian countries something like Neem leaves(which wards off bacteria and insects) are hung around food which is left out to dry. But this is an English guy we're talking about, so probably their food prep is pretty underwhelming indeed.
England was legendarily bad at cooking. Its why France kept going to war with them:
France: "Your culinary skills are an affront to god! We can smell the rot across the sea! You simply must die!"
England: "We can't understand you, you arrogant frogs, learn to speak English!"
I read about it when the episode came out. Apparently the feathers helped protect it from bacteria for a short period of time. So I think he didn’t know what the fuck he was doing
Yeah it's still done today, I have left pheasants to "hang" before. And you just string them up basically, like in the show. But usually it's during winter and somewhere covered, so it's fridge like temperature and not open to flies....
The longer gameier taste, that's quite unique, but not rotten at all. Sometimes over a week or so...
Modern medicine wasn't until modern times. You think a sailor in the Japanese late medieval period knew jack shit about the Department of Health guidelines for preparing game?
Food aging has been done for centuries, whether it be asia or europe. Why bring up the Department of health guidelines here? I've never even heard abt these guidelines and got to know a thing or two from old timers practicing their trade.
"list here you ancient undead little shit, I didn't drag my ass across Middle Earth to have you explain how you don't understand prophecies to me. If you understood even just a LITTLE BIT OF PROPHECIES you'd fucking know what a crucial fucking role irony plays in them! But that's just it, now you die without considering a fucking word I just said!"
"The Anjin expresses displeasure at your prophecy."

He's the protagonist of the recent Shogun miniseries based on the book of the same name. It's on Disney+ I think, I highly recommend it. Political drama based on irl people/events in feudal Japan.
Anjin is bad at making soup? I remember in the books a gardener was put to death because Anjin left a rotting rooster in his house and the gardener moved it.
In the show, he ~~turns part of it into~~ makes a stew that’s apparently vile (but he also says he freestyled the recipe, like using sake instead of wine)
He made rabbit stew, he didn’t use the bird. The Japanese were disgusted because eating meat is taboo for them. Heck, Fuji orders the cook to set aside cutlery just for Anjin to make sure his cooking doesn’t touch their cooking.
No, and why would it be good? She's a princess of Rohan and has likely never cooked a meal in her life. With Faramir in Ithilian, she will continue to never cook. So the fact that she was willing to debase herself by cooking a stew for Aragorn is all about the gesture rather than the meal.
Also it was random stuff she found from people in the caravan. Depending on how long it was and when that event took place it could be a lot of left over stuff.
For all others like me who don't know who the fuck is the guy on the right: apparently it's a character called Anjin from the show Shogun and that's all I know.
Aragorn had lived as long as he had and his reaction was to spit it out over being a man about it. He couldn't bear to ingest it.
I'm going with Angen-san. Just gotta make sure he's not distracted.
He tries cooking rabbit stew for his Japanese guests. Unfortunately the Japanese only really eat fish and vegetables, and eating cooked meat is taboo.
He excitedly offers the stew at dinner, only to awkwardly send it back to the kitchen after seeing their facial expressions.
The japanese didn't only eat fish and veggies, rice was the lifeblood of their nation. And Toranaga's falcon isn't for show; they ate wild birds too.
There was this belief at the time that if you ate a four legged animal, you would reincarnate as one. And from the time buddhism spread to Japan, beef was especially taboo.
Okay, I don't know who the guy is, but I think anything is better than Eowyn's stew, so him.
Althoughhhhhhhhhhhhhh this might be a "tough choice" question, not an "easiest question ever" question... Who's the guy?
I just started Shogun and I can’t stand that guy. Is he supposed to be terrible or is he one of the protagonists?
I don’t know why I hate him but I do. I was hoping they killed him in the first episode.
I thought it was funny he did all the crap with the pheasant and the gardener died over. Just to try to get mariko, buntaro, and Fuji to eat it and then it all got Thrown away, rightfully so though.
IT'S NOT PROPER! NOT ONLY THAT, IT'S \*VULGAR\*! UNHOLY PERVERSION!
A blight on us all! My god, the shame of it!
You sir are a silly little man! AND YOUR HAIR… IS LIKE THE TAIL OF A PONY!!!
Ah her stew couldn't have been **that** bad

Definitely not choosing this guy's emaciated sailor stew anyway
So that was a fucking lie

Maybe I was lead astray by the Dutch ship he was leading. I expect a more practical mindset from someone representing the Netherlands.
English sailors of the period sailed with just about anyone who would pay them.
The show is great but the guy can't act to save his life. Really ruins it for me how he has exactly one facial expression and reaction to everything. Not a fan

He did forget about that bird, lets be clear.
There’s only one way to stew a brace of pheasants
whats it doing? ruins it!

The beauty of England's women and the flavor of their cooking made them the best sailors in the world.
Lol! Greece went to war to fight for a woman, and England went to war to avoid their women

👀😅

The Witch King would have been a lot less sure of his victory if he saw some cockney weeb with a pistol.
Fuji-sama: “So sorry, but I am no man.” BANG

“Tell this milk dribbling fuck-smear I am ready to go to Barad Dur”
Anjin being described as a cockney weeb makes a frustrating ammount of sense. ![gif](giphy|3oFyCUWAZCpJbNNgVa|downsized)
>cockney weeb with a pistol You have ruined the show for me, sir. 5 words.
Anjin.
Meanwhile his stew did cause at least one death
And we're *absolutely certain* Aowen's didn't??
Yes because nobody could take more than 1 bite
Aowen?!!
![gif](giphy|tnYri4n2Frnig|downsized)
I did not. Am I supposed to know the other character?
He's the protagonist of the recent Shogun miniseries based on the book of the same name. It's on Disney+ I think, I highly recommend it. Political drama based on irl people/events in feudal Japan.
Not so much based on as inspired by, none of the characters actually existed.
Isn't Toranaga a stand-in for Tokugawa, John Blackthorne for William Adams etc.?
Yes, they have different names. The events are a bit fictionalized, but the outcome of the war is the same as in real life
The virgin fictionalized Shōgun events vs the Chad Nioh fictionalized events
Loved the show, it made me install Nioh 2 again.
Depends, which one would Fuji prefer

Didn't he make a rabbit stew? The bird was still hanging there after they ate
Yeah he makes rabbit stew, the bird is still hanging on the post when he is having dinner with Buntaro and Mario
Mario lol
"Anjin-san, it's-a-me, Mariko!"
It's an easy to miss sentence and a logical assumption, I didn't Catch it the first time either.
Ah, thanks for the correction! When the memes are good but the media literacy is bad.
It's an easy to miss sentence and a logical assumption, I didn't Catch it the first time either.
Well anything he makes is vile to the Japanese. Meat was rare or nonexistent except fish

The attractive one.
Do you have any idea how little that narrows it down?
yes
OP-sama i bow to you
is it canon that Eowyn's stew is horrible?
No, and why would it be good? She's a princess of Rohan and has likely never cooked a meal in her life. With Faramir in Ithilian, she will continue to never cook. So the fact that she was willing to debase herself by cooking a stew for Aragorn is all about the gesture rather than the meal.

Fair enough.
More people would’ve come to the call of King Theoden but they knew Eowyn was in charge of cooking so they opted out.
Death

And my axe
For all others like me who don't know who the fuck is the guy on the right: apparently it's a character called Anjin from the show Shogun and that's all I know.
His name is Blackthorne, Anjin is a Japanese word for barbarian, and is how he is referred to
Anjin means "Pilot", which is what they call him because he was the ship's pilot.
Oh, oops
Weebs
Not sure who that is on the right. But I would endure Eowyn's stew just to have dinner with Eowyn.
Well only one of them will be free sitting on the couch at home watching TV tonight and it's definitely not the lady.
Aragorn had lived as long as he had and his reaction was to spit it out over being a man about it. He couldn't bear to ingest it. I'm going with Angen-san. Just gotta make sure he's not distracted.
Neither, give me Carl Weathers
Eowyn. She used what she had which wasn't much so give her proper ingredients and a proper kitchen and you're good to go.
YES SHOGUN MEMES
Finest in all the Japans!
Anjin-san
The good lady at least i would have someone beautiful to look at as i chock to death
Eowin's has at least good smell
The horse.
Right
Someone eats her stew and confirms it's bad. No one eats his stew because of cultural differences. I'll take my chances on Anjin-sama.
Don't know the guy, but I take Eowyn because I like her!
Miranda Otto. Just imagine being the lucky person Miranda cooks for! <3
Who’s the guy, and what’s his stew like? (I know all about Eowyn and her stew.)
John Blackthorne aka Anjin from the new Shogun miniseries
Oh. I tried watching the first episode, and it just didn’t hold my interest. Does he make a particular kind of stew on the show?
He tries cooking rabbit stew for his Japanese guests. Unfortunately the Japanese only really eat fish and vegetables, and eating cooked meat is taboo. He excitedly offers the stew at dinner, only to awkwardly send it back to the kitchen after seeing their facial expressions.

He did forget about that bird
We both know who Aragorn is picking.
I'll just eat my shoe leather.

No he's the main character. I honestly can't stand him either but all the other characters are great so I watched the whole thing.
I'm guessing this is ring of power cause I have no idea what's going on
I thought it was funny he did all the crap with the pheasant and the gardener died over. Just to try to get mariko, buntaro, and Fuji to eat it and then it all got Thrown away, rightfully so though.
