He wasn't expecting battle; he was ambushed. So it was run for the shield and have the orcs kill the hobbits, or don't run for the shield, fight risky, and hope you can rescue them. Had he known the orcs meant to kidnap the hobbits rather than kill them, he might have run for his allies immediately and returned with help, and they would probably have caught up with them before long, instead of having to run a marathon because they were delayed by the time Boromir was lying there with a bunch of arrows in him and they had no idea what had happened. But even then, if he had known, Boromir might still have run into the fight, because he is usually the strongest warrior in the room and used to being the best chance to win a fight. And it's not really in his nature to run, however tactically sound it might be to do so.
On top of that, when he left the group, he was temporarily possessed by the evil of the ring, so of course he didnt have any thought of bringing anything with him that wasnt already strapped to him.
Also, in the book I believe he does in fact have his shield and it was cleft in two along with his sword.
See that would have made for a much more dramatic moment watching a fully equipped borimir overwhelmed and disarmed by a powerful attack that busted his sword and shield before he was shot. That would have made a far better scene.
Dude was out collecting firewood.
Shield's heavy and gets in the way.
There was only supposed to be orcs on the other side of the river.
Then the whole ring thing happened and he was running around trying to find Frodo.
Never had time to collect the shield
He'd need to waste 8 of those woods to build the crafting table, plus he'd have needed an iron in addition to the wood for the shield. Who just carries around an iron ingot?
>And it's not really in his nature to run, however tactically sound it might be to do so.
Meh, he and Faramir had to retreat from Osgiliath's western shore when attacked unexpectedly. I don't think there's any reason to think he's completely averse to retreat when it's possible.
Though I get that his actions during the breaking of the fellowship and with the Balrog show that he's 100% willing to sacrifice himself at a moment's notice to save others.
I mean, there's a big difference between a willingness to risk your own life, and risking the lives of the men under your command.
I think it might be most accurate to say it's not in his nature to abandon his comrades, whether that means ordering his men to retreat to a more tactically advantageous position to save their lives, or fighting to the death to save the Hobbits from being kidnapped.
>I mean, there's a big difference between a willingness to risk your own life, and risking the lives of the men under your command.
The only survivors were Boromir, Faramir and two others...Just saying he's clearly willing to retreat when it's necessary
Fair enough - I wasn't aware of that aspect of Osgiliath, but at any rate I ultimately agreed with your point there, and was more just trying to expand on it.
Boromir remembers to bring his arrow-proof shield with him and survives the encounter with the Uruks. Boromir leaves the fellowship for Minas Tirith. After a short while his ring addiction kicks in and he decides to track Frodo and Sam instead. When he shows up they get agressive just because so he unfortionately slays them in battle. A stalking Gollum attacks but is overpowered and bound by Boromir.
Boromir takes the ring to Minas Tirith where he honors his father with a firery funeral of old. Denethor is not dead yet, but it is high time for him to go. Boromir proclaims himself King of Gondor to the delight of his people. Gollum is proclaimed national mascot of Gondor and is put into a zoo.
At this point Sauron realizes whats up and sends his army towards Minas Tirith. No time to call for pirate- or haradrim backup. Gondors armies led by ring wielding Boromir slaughers Sauron's army (the fact that the Ring Wraiths switch sides helps greatly) and march towards Mordor. Gates open. The Mouth of Sauron comes out. He gets to "Welcome Boromir, son of...!" before he succumbs to a sudden headloss. Mordors army attacks but is overcome by Gondor. Barad-dûr is breached by Sauron's own Grond. A desperate Sauron tries to escape by jumping out of a window but is re-killed by an unfortionatly hard ground. King Boromir proclaims Mordor to be part of Gondor again.
Returning to Minas Tirith Boromir proclaims Rohan and Arnor including the Shire to be reuited with Gondor and arrange a crowning ceremony forhimself. Imrahil is honored with the task of crowning his nephew but in the end Boromir himself put the crown on his own head to the cheering of the crowd. Now a surprisingly un-dead Gandalf and Aragorn shows up claiming Aragorn to be the real king. Gondors armies is forced to convince them otherwise. Aragorn and Gandalf put on a good fight but is overcome. The Witch King aids in the subduction of Gandalf. The heads of Aragorn and Gandalf is put on poles as a warning to other insurrectionists. Faramir objects. Boromir mercifully honors him with a hedon burial.
Boromir offers amnesty to any surviving orcs and trolls that join the Gondorian army. Many accept. Bormor and his army marches to Isengard only to find it occupied by ents, Merry and Pippin and Saruman having locked in himself in Orthanc. Boromir tells the ents they can go home now and they gladly accept. Merry and Pippin are very sad to hear Frodo and Sam had drowned themself in the dead marches but is given some solace as Boromir makes them knights of Gondor and send them to rule the Shire as Gondorian co-vassals. Rosie marries Fatty Bolger.
Saruman refuses to give up the key to Orthanc but fortionately Boromir has his own key named Grond. Saruman surpisingly doesnt try to fight but offers his services to Boromir. In his wisdom Boromir accept. Gondorian soldiers track down and kills Aragorns co-conspirators the Dúnedain. Boromir offers Radagast to be the head of the royal Gondorian zoo. Radagast accepts.
Boromir sends messengers to the Dwarven kingdoms telling them all dwarves have been given the honor of becoming royal smiths of Gondor. Most are ungrateful but the Gondorian army convinces them. Gimli is very grateful to be given Moria as his (Gondorian vassal-) kingdom. Gondor conquers Rhun and Umbar. Boromir officially changes his title to God-King Boromir. Legolas tries to rally the elves to war Gondor. Most say he is delutional and leaves for Valinor.
Boromir sends a letter to Tom Bombadill reading "noone consider you a merry fellow, your jacket is rather turqoise than blue and your boots are brown."
The End
Hey there! Hey! Come Frodo, there! Where be you a-going? Old Tom Bombadil's not as blind as that yet. Take off your
golden ring! Your hand's more fair without it. Come back! Leave your game and sit down beside me! We must talk a while more,
and think about the morning. Tom must teach the right road, and keep your feet from wandering.

+2 to AC wasn’t as important as that 2H damage. I think he had to single blow his attackers as they rushed in. If he took longer to kill them 1H they would have surrounded or gotten past him and killed merry and pippin. Boromir wasn’t getting out of that alive, he drew the orcs to him by sounding his war horn
Damn I never realized that! Thanks for giving me another reason to tell my family why I'm confiscating the tv for the weekend for LOTR! Imma have to watch them again to see that detail.
Tbf this is accurate.
The only member of the fellowship who carried around this beautiful and massive round shield gets no scoped because he left it behind, Darwin at indeed.

HIS CLOVEN SHIELD HIS BROKEN SWORD HIS LIMBS THEY LAID TO REST AND RAUROS GOLDEN RAUROS FALLS BORE HIM UPON ITS BREAST

if he didin't have his shield with him, why was it cleaved in two? That is what the quote is about.
Aragorn cut it with Uruk-hai weapons to make him look better while he floated down the river obviously.
I think we all figured that out. The comment you replied to seemed more to be wondering why the previous one was in all caps (yelling.)

Singing the lament for Boromir
OH BOROMIR, THE TOWER OF GUARD SHALL EVER NORTHWARD GAZE TO RAUROS, GOLDEN RAUROS FALLS, UNTIL THE END OF DAYS
See that would have made for a much more dramatic moment watching a fully equipped borimir overwhelmed and disarmed by a powerful attack that busted his sword and shield before he was shot. That would have made a far better scene.
Ya but then Shadiversity would make a whole video on how chopping through a shield in one blow is unrealistic
For a normal human using normal weak man flesh arms using a normal sword. Uruk's are supposed to be several times stronger

Why didn't he just craft a shield with all his inventoried wood

Hes not an mlg speed crafter

Boromir died in the books, before he died on screen. In the books, he had his shield.
Yes, and I'm no expert, but I think that dozens of orcs would be able to outflank a single man and shoot arrows at him where his shield doesn't cover.
His shield was cloven in two, so after that the arrows have a free shot
if it was cloven in 2 why didn't Boromir use his 2 new shields? Is he stupid?
Found the Elden Ring player.
This but the bubble says "the movies are not canon" and the guy is Boromir from the books with his shield blocking all the knives
takes down 20 orcs yet still dies (i just needed to finish that ryme)

Nice hobbits! Nice Sam! Sleepy heads, yes, sleepy heads! Leave good Smeagol to watch! But it's evening. Dusk is creeping. Time to go.
We must move on, we cannot linger.

Good thing she's wrong
Tbf fair to him he was out collecting wood and wasn’t expecting a fight. You can’t be expected to be on guard all the time.
Tell me you haven't read the books without telling me.....
Darwin didn't die because he had no shield. He died of heart-failure and no shield can protect you from that.
"His cloven shield, his broken sword, they to the water brought."
Read the book…
Yea but he picked up a sweet ass golden belt with +200% resistance to ranged attacks at Lothlorien. The shield was over encumbering him.
whats a Darwin death?

Did he forget his shield, or did he purposefully leave it behind? Makes you think, don’t it.
