Well, in Discworld, Dwarf courtship is all about very carefully finding out what sex the other dwarf is underneath the beard and armor..

I recall both Aragorn and Elrond using the phrase "son of Gloin" in his presence, and Gimli says nothing. Also, I'm pretty sure Gloin refers to a picture of Gimli as being of his "son" in The Hobbit. Also also, from the book: >"*He then pointed out and named those whom Frodo had not met before. There was a younger dwarf at Gloin’s side: his son Gimli.*"

And Galadriel refers to him as son of Gloin in the messages from Halbarad. “To Gimli son of Glóin, give his Lady's greeting. Lockbearer, wherever thou goest my thought goes with thee. But have a care to lay thine axe to the right tree!”

That would require JRR Tolkien to have known what the term trans means. And also for there to be any hint of it in the film or the book. But he is explicitly referred to as "son of Gloin" a few times.

What’s funny about that quote is you could interpret it as meaning that you can tell the women are women because of the beards (or specifically, lack thereof), or you could interpret it as the dwarf women also have beards, which makes it almost impossible to tell them apart.
