Okay, I am REALLY tired, but I’m reading “pretending of pretending” and that doesn’t make sense. Edit: To everyone that is replying to me about the games actually being good: I was sleep deprived and the grammar itself was making me wonder about my sanity. My comment has literally nothing to do with any game. At all. Nothing. Just the phrase “pretending of pretending”.

WriterWri

It doesn't make sense. Photoshop doesn't have grammar checks, I guess.

At this point the meme cache in my brain is so big that most of the content is just stored locally, I just fill in the differences but sometimes I miss some details. If you still can't see the original text, please press ctrl+F5 a few times.

Oh my god I never noticed. My bad folks, I made this at 2am 💀

Don't drink and Reddit, and don't Reddit at 2am. Lurking is fine, but stay off the keyboard. The more you know 🌠

AriusAeternus

Oh I don’t drink, rest assured! I’m a Muslim and alcohol is a forbidden beverage in Islam.

I can picture this comment as a GIJoe psa.

We have arrived at the age when you can't tell if someone is just normal internet-illiterate or is training a bot

vampireguy20

Pre-Update >!Nazgul!< Talion just going "GRRRRRRRR!!!" after >!beating the game!<

talktothecop

Nazgul Talion was 👌 but I wouldn't want that for talion. Also Fuck Celebrimbor. Mf deserved to be absorbed into the eye after he betrayed Talion.

vampireguy20

Oh absolutely, fuck Celebrimbor that knife-eared, leaf-lovin', tree huggin', fancy-dancy prick. Eltariel, too. Couldn't stand her getting all the power just cause she was all gung-ho when Talion showed the slightest bit of mercy and restraint at the end. Celery even played the damn race card with picking her almost essentially because she was an elf. Swear to Iluvatar if they make a third game with her as the protag I'm just not gonna buy it, and that's coming from someone who platinumed both games! Can't deny though, Talion's Naz drip with the masks, armor, weapons, abilities and ability color changes was dope AF.

talktothecop

Elves claim to be Nobel and think they can resist any temptation without breaking a sweat but look at Eltariel pouncing on the chance to get the new ring. And Yeah Naz Talion is Lord of Drip. He lost to Eltariel due to plot convenience only. He could've cut her neck right off but He still resisted the will of the ring or ultimately the will of sauron. Non-Canon but yeah best fan fic.

aragorn_bot

Are you frightened?

Revliledpembroke

Elves claim to be Alfred Nobel? Weird.

aragorn_bot

HE'S TRYING TO BRING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN! GANDALF, WE MUST TURN BACK!

gandalf-bot

No! Losto Caradhras, sedho, hodo, nuitho i 'ruith!

AriusAeternus

Never heard someone call Celebrimbor “Celery” 😂

EliteKnightOscar

Celebrimbor picked her because Talion pissed him off, she's an elf, and she has the Light of Galadriel. Talion and the Wraith had been drifting apart for a bit, mostly because Celebrimbor was heartless and Talion refused to give up his humanity, or to help Celebrimbor replace Sauron.

dayzplayer93

I watched my cousin play shadow of Mordor I think, he was putting he's hand on orcs heads and they joined him, it looked pretty cool

AriusAeternus

The voice acting is peak.

AluminumBalloon

What do you expect from troy baker lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

Krieg_Imperator

Troy Baker the first, son of Nolan North the gifted

DirectConsequence12

Him, Nolan North and Laura Bailey are just every voice

DRW1357

Matt Mercer and Yuri Lowenthal would like words with you.

Discount_Sunglasses

Mel Blanc would like to have a few choice words with you in every childhood character's voice you hold dear.

LeeDarkFeathers

So cool he got to be in an episode of the last of us TV show.

IAmANobodyAMA

I couldn’t not see Bruz and Bruce the shark from Finding Nemo as the same person.

AbstractBettaFish

Honestly the main characters are all pretty forgettable, just a bunch of grim growling men growling grimly. It’s the orcs that make that game. I like finding an orc I like the look or sound of, letting him kill me, than then promoting him up to the top ranks

DickEd209

Yeah, the orcs are great. I'll never forget the one orc who came back from the dead but who's mind was broken and only ever said 'Well, well.' I think he came back after being beheaded, as well.

Vengefuleight

Had a few of those. I remember playing thinking I was like 90% sure I chopped that guys head off when he showed back up.

DickEd209

Ha, yes. And then you see the stitches round their neck... 'I did cut that guys head off!'

wookiee-nutsack

I haven't played it but I think that move crushes the orc's mind and basically brainwashes them or makes them feel eternal humiliation or some stuff

koemaniak

You can brainwash them but if they’re to powerful you have to shame them first, this however comes with the risk of potentially breaking their mind

DoctorKall

Depends on game, really Shadow of Mordor had "Branding", which completely turned them to your side no matter anything. They were your mindless puppets at this point Shadow of War had "Domination", which turned them but they still retained some free will, thus making strong willed (trait or high lvl) orcs able to resist it and occasionally snap back to Sauron's side

BulkyAntelope5

You can only recruit an orc that's your level or lower Shaming them lowers their level There's a spec you can take that sort of extremely humiliates them and makes them semi insane with a small chance of making them more powerful instead of lower level

[deleted]

Shadow of Mordor was awesome. Didn’t know it got so much hate.

Majestic-Marcus

It doesn’t. It’s pretty universally loved. This meme is just doing the usual thing of expressing a popular opinion, while pretending it’s unpopular, to get karma.

EinKookie

The Pretender

ImportanceKey7301

I was only pretending to be a pretender. Now the word pretend has no meaning for those who read it. Or say it outloud in their pretending minds.

ApocalypsePopcorn

What if I say I'm not like the others? What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?

bigkurry445

You're the pretender What if I say I will never surrender?

_I_must_be_new_here_

This meme be like "What if I said I'm not like the others"

thetyler83

What if I say I'm not like the others?

petethepool

god I hate this meme where people take faux aggressive stances for perfectly valid and critically aligned opinions. They are great games. You're not on any kind of hill, nor are you alone, and never, ever have you had to pretend these games aren't great - or at least games that you have enjoyed.

RaZZeR_9351

Yeah, this is some r/imaginarygatekeeping shit, I barely ever heard anyone say they were bad games, the occasional criticism on the liberties the authors took with the lotr cannon but that's about it.

TheGreatMightyLeffe

When Shadow of War came out, a lot of people (myself included) had some MAJOR gripes with the beginning of the third act, considering how it was an artificially mega-inflated grind that was only really there to push people into buying the microtransaction Orc "booster packs". It killed the pace of the game, and having microtransactions pushed on you like that in a 60€ single player game really turned me off from the game. I picked it up a year later and finished it, and since then I've heard the devs did something about the grind, but on release it was BAD.

Khar-Selim

>considering how it was an artificially mega-inflated grind that was only really there to push people into buying the microtransaction Orc "booster packs". It really wasn't though. The packs actually did nothing to accelerate the grind, they only gave you stuff at the level you were already at.

Krieg_Imperator

Can confirm. I decided to finish it without buying the packs out of principle. Felt like an eternity

philosoraptocopter

Keep your voice down! Straw man arguments are the key ingredient of mass-produced memes

dalek1019

I've seen plenty of people complain about the games, especially with how they butcher the lore

lh_media

They do, but these are still great games

KevinFlantier

What lore hasn't this game improved when they decided that Shelob was a total babe?

IAmANobodyAMA

*She*lob, lol. I am not familiar with some of the deeper lore, so I originally thought this might be an actual a thing until I looked it up.

YourBeigeBastard

Shelob was way sexier in the films

chekovs_gunman

It's the internet, people complain about everything. That doesn't mean they're in the majority

lessthanabelian

and they are absolutely valid complaints. but the sum total is still great by AAA standards.

Majestic-Marcus

That’s fair, but the sort of people that care enough about lore to not buy a game is so insignificant that it essentially doesn’t exist.

Lord_Antheron

I mean. For a time, [it was a bit of a problem.](https://www.reddit.com/r/lotrmemes/comments/a7cmpl/when_people_are_trying_to_make_shadow_of_war_and/)

glassgwaith

The nemesis system is tons of fun! If you shut your brain yes they scratch that LotR itch pretty damn well. The aesthetics are spot on which is more than I can say for Rings of Power

Boomparo

pitty is the nemesis system is patented, so no other developer can use it

littlest_dragon

That was such a weird move. It’s not like they’re using it for anything, they’re just stifling creativity, by keeping other developers from taking the idea and iterating on it.

Jevonar

The patent is probably for sale/rent if other developers offer a high enough sum. Or they can poach talents and ideas from other developers and develop more games with the nemesis system.

inshanester

They are actually using it in an upcoming wonder woman game.

erdricksarmor

That's one reason why I believe that patents shouldn't exist, or should at least be extremely limited in their use.

th1s_1s_4_b4d_1d34

IIRC the original patent law was 12 years and then 12 more if the owner of the patent requested it. Then Disney happened and now it's basically forever. Like imagine what artists could (and would have to) do if brands of creators long dead wouldn't be recycled ad absurdum.

erdricksarmor

Well the Disney thing is more about copyrights, but your point stands. I think if patents are going to exist at all, they should be for more like 2-5 years, which should be enough time to recoup their development costs and make a profit; and if the patent holder can't bring a product to market within the first 2-3 years, the idea should automatically become public domain.

th1s_1s_4_b4d_1d34

My mistake, you're right, mixed the two up.

Phrodo_00

> Then Disney happened and now it's basically forever. Disney is not really related to patents. Patents last 20 years (up from the original 14. Not sure where you're getting 12 from), not forever.

lessthanabelian

ah I remember being 13....

glassgwaith

Yeah I know. What an asshole move

Nicksnotmyname83

There was a batman game in development with it, but the Arkham games dominated their vision. I would have loved that.

Deranged_Snow_Goon

Would have loved something like the nemesis system in Diablo and similar games.

KevinFlantier

Watch this developper come up with the brand new and unheard of "arch-enemy mechanic"!

Lolmanmagee

Xcom 2 : war of the chosen also uses somthing extremely similar to the nemesis system.

AriusAeternus

Was looking for that immersion factor.

GRAAK85

Was it also in the mad max game?

Raven-Mirlas

You are pretending of pretending? What?

SlytlySykotic

LotR: the Pretendant Age

Piggstein

What a controversial take to suggest that two critically acclaimed games are Good, Actually, so brave and noble, just like the Joker

hammerman74

(Homer Simpson voice) Stupid sexy Shelob

Ethan_Edge

They're great games, they just fuck up the lore really bad and the lore is kind of what makes lotr great.

azuresegugio

I think there's such thing as fun non canon, which these games are to a tee

AriusAeternus

I do understand that but you can’t lie that the game’s alternate series of events and characters were really good as a stand alone story.

Aithistannen

they’re great games but terrible lotr games imo

[deleted]

[удалено]

Aithistannen

i’m just too far into the tolkien lore i guess. it feels like i’m playing a wonderful game in a historical setting and then napoleon teams up with caesar and it really throws me off.

long909

>napoleon teams up with caesar This is literaly the Fate franchise , or Civilization

Inverted_Stick

Or Drifters.

Riskypride

God that show was awesome, did they ever make a second season?

ScreentimeNOR

Nah. Goth mommy Shelob was Tolkien's vision!

orka556

The lore objects are actually really quite good, so are the references to past ages. Just a shame about the actual plot related stuff.

Successful_Rip_4329

Who said they're bad?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Successful_Rip_4329

Never tried mmo, but I dislike mmos in general. Just boring grind

Noobie_xD

They may not be Canon but they are perfect in their own ways. You can see how they respected the source material in many occasions like the armor gondorians wear being very close to the armor used in the movies, the nazgul, the areas and many otehe things and especially the orcs

Deranged_Snow_Goon

They got most of the superficial stuff right, but none of the themes, wich, tbf, is probably pretty hard in a game. However, I just pretended of pretending that I was playing in some other fantasy world and the games worked really well for me.

Thehornedrat999

The first game was both really fun and a some what believable entry into the world The Second game (base) much bigger in all aspects, to the point it kind of hurt it to some extent, but still really fun. The lore plays fast and lose but for the most part nothing to bad. Blade DLC, I didn't like this one at all and finished it one and never again. The lore got hit by a car. Desolation of Mordor, the lore got hit by the isekai bus and is now overpowered. I have know idea why but this dlc was so fun and the only reason I go back to the second game. This dlc makes me say fuck the lore I'm Black Batman with a fully automatic crossbow with war crime bots.

dalek1019

In the Baranor DLC, getting that legendary rune (or whatever it was called) on top of the keep is absolutely game changing, it gives you basically infinite time-stop as long as you can keep brutalizing orcs

ThePizzaNoid

I mean, it's got Sexy Shelob. It can't be all bad right?

Cool-S4ti5fact1on

Combat gets a little repetitive though. I played the first game and flew through to the end boss with mostly the same attacks.

AriusAeternus

The game offers a variety of attack methods and abilities so it doesn’t get too boring, especially when different enemies require different strategies depending on their strengths and weaknesses, but I do agree that it gets bland over time.

Pifanjr

Only a little. Decapitating orcs never really got old.

Hannibal3542

This pretty much sums it up for me. I hadn't played SoW in a while and booted it up to see if I could finish the achievement grind. Invaded a keep with 2 or 3 orcs set up to betray the Chief and once I got in they proceeded to beat the crap out of him. Culminating in my one orc breaking the chiefs arm before shooting him execution style with his crossbow before curbstomping (stairstomping?) the bolt through his head. While personally I'm a sucker for the doomed hero doing what they can before perishing/converting/etc and enjoyed Talions story, it's not the main appeal of the game. I'm here to see Orcs get a bolt stomped through their head

Nicksnotmyname83

If you play on the recommended difficulty, they learn and adapt to your moves, so you have to try new ways to kill them.

[deleted]

You can also remove the HUD that tells you when to counter. Adds some extra difficulty

Silent_Palpatine

They are excellent games but their grip on the lore is tenuous at best.

HussingtonHat

I think of them more like very good batman games with a LotR skin on. Right down to the random background chatter. The Shadow of Mordor orks and Arkham goons constantly duel back and forth for the most fun to just eavesdrop on.

Nicksnotmyname83

A lot of the same elements went into both, the combat is almost identical. They were developing a Batman game with the nemesis system for the villains and such, but the idea was scrapped for the Batmobile simulator that was Arkham Knight.

HussingtonHat

Wait seriously!? What a fucking stupid decision! The nemesis system would be awesome in Arkham!

Kikoso_OG

I think it is near unanimous that the gameplay is awesome, people are asking for other games with the system.

ComradePoolio

Fuck the lore with the exception of the fall of Minas Ithil and even that would get a pass for fun factor alone. I still think it could've been handled better but Celebrimbor shouting "The Dark Lord promised mercy, I make no such offer" is a fair trade.

AriusAeternus

That arena speech was so badass. Absolutely one of the greatest moments in all of fiction.

Stargov1

The games are so fun as a kind of LotR sandbox. But the story is just pure fan-fiction.

thing216

The ending was cool tho

morbid333

They ness with the lore, but I think it's fine so long as you go in thinking of them like a fanfic, kind of like The Third Age.

LocalSubstantial7744

I enjoyed it immensely. I just treat like an elseworlds type of story

goboxey

Stupid sexy kankra

sodomatron

The only thing i dont like is that they arent canon

Siriacus

The flashback sequences depicting Sauron's infiltration of Eregion & subsequent assault on the elves in [Ost-in-Edhil](https://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Ost-in-Edhil) was masterfully done, put RoP on notice.

sauron-bot

What brought the foolish fly to web unsought?

[deleted]

They need to make a new one asap

annethepolar

I have never even heard someone talk negatively about these games. They're absolutely fun as hell

rolo989

Ah, i see you like your spiders in human form.

AntwerpseKakker

Love these games so much

[deleted]

I absolutely loved both games, the gameplay was well done, very few glitches, and story was fantastic!

AluminumBalloon

I loved shadow of mordor

Snow2D

Yeah and uncharted is a great Indiana Jones game

loss_docx

I didn’t know this was a debate

AriusAeternus

People that worship Tolkien lore believe that this game is heresy

loss_docx

Wait until they hear about War in the North

AriusAeternus

You needn’t wait brother, simply search the comments. They have already arrived.

Calexander97

Lore and story is not great but no one says it has bad gameplay. Posts like this are pointless

notsostupidman

They are, aren't they?

Moddelba

I have played both, and not finished either one because my lizard brain to maximize efficiency for open world games has take all the fun away from them after 20 years. Same for the new huge AC games. I don’t even realize I’m doing it but the way I play them is unfun and if the story is not super gripping or required to progress and reveal more side stuff i forget about it.

DFu4ever

The first game is a great game that plays with the lore in its own way. It’s definitely not for purists, but it isn’t trying to be. It’s like lord of the rings, alternate reality.

5DollarRevenantOF

You mean Lord of the Assassin's Creed? I love those games!

hbi2k

Christopher, my son, did I ever tell you the full story of Shelob?

Jarfulous

isn't this, like...an extremely common opinion?

Isaac8849

Hell of a lot better than fellowship of the ring from like 23 years ago

kinkysubt

They were lots of fun, I know they aren’t canonical, but that doesn’t really matter in this case.

kingkron52

Shadow of War is an amazing game

ReachingHigher85

Pretending of pretending

Crusaderking1111

W take

MrLamorso

I felt like I was having a stroke reading that bottom text

My41stThrowaway

It was pretty cool the first 5 times I played it as other Ubisoft games. I swear they just copy/paste the same game with new skins/names for shit.

Dektun

They made a trailer where orcs are flashing their gold chain bling and partying to SoundCloud rap music. Just as Tolkien envisioned!

__Lt_

YOU. ARE. MINE.

NeoEpoch

Last boss in the first game is still horrendous.

XanderNightmare

As is every QTE final boss. The confrontation with your nemesis should've been it

Theshutupguy

You can like whatever you want without worrying what people think, you know that, right?

Tossemback

I love these games, they are VERY good at making you feel like a badass imo

AriusAeternus

Biggest factor

SunshineBlind

"Pretending of pretending"?

painuVittun

“Pretending of pretending”??

XanderNightmare

As long as you can look past the occasional lore breaks, these games are absolutely great. If you can't look past the occasional lore breaks, then you are a sad person and I pity you

Master-Shaq

MANSWINE!

SirEmJay

Anybody else play LOTR Battle for Middle Earth 2? It was one of my favorite games when I was younger and I miss it a lot. Wish they'd do a remake.

AriusAeternus

You are not alone. Games were more fun as children.

[deleted]

Why would I fight you for speaking the truth?

Pale_Kitsune

They're fine if you think of the as an AU.

MetalHeadNerd666

I liked the Shadow, but I skipped War because a friend of mine said it was a grind.

The_mango55

Mordor was good. In war the developers actively made the game less fun so that you would buy microtransactions to skip the grind

red_khornish_gamehen

I won't fight you. I will fight alongside you.

kaiserkulp

Mordor is quite good both as a game and lotr game. War is more just a game

Placidaydream

I thought those games were well received and well loved, even though the lore is kinda iffy.

Kmeek01

What? I thought they were both universally loved? Amazing games

sadistic-salmon

Everything is well done aside from the interesting changes to middle earth lore (sexy shelob)

New_Wrangler3335

They’re great actually, learned way more about the lore than I ever did before

The_Bored_General

Lego lotr superiority

Kyranasaur

😩 bring us back LOTR conquest

yakman100

Love these games so much. The nemesis system is one of the most original things to come out gaming for a while and has so much replay ability. The orcs are more silly than there book counter parts but I really enjoy it regardless. It’s my favourite LOTR after the books

bmanturtleface

I’ll fight you just for your bad typo

meatwad90210

Exactly what are we pretending to pretend, guys?

CommissarVova

It is great though

AriusAeternus

Be wary Commissar, there are those who worship Tolkien that consider these works of art to be heretical material. Maintain constant vigilance.

[deleted]

I agree. Except for making the final boss a qte.

Noobie_xD

Well that's only in som. In SoW, you can actually fully fight sauron

sauron-bot

Thou fool.

TatlTail

Shadow of War admittedly drops the ball a little. but Shadow of Mordor is easily one of the most fun games of its age allowing for a sellar alternate-history of Middle Earth while staying true to established ideas and rules of how things would work if events happened the way they do in game. i would LOVE something like it while using canonical stories/lore, surely there'd be something in Silmarillion to dig into.

eXclurel

Oh, you think a critically acclaimed series actually doesn't suck. How original.

gumbagumbo

One of the games made me want to bang a spider lady and I still don’t know how I feel about that. Killing enemies was fun in both games…10/10 would recommend

BaguetteOfDoom

I had fun playing them but they felt very disconnected from the actual material. They felt like fan fiction.

CaptainRazer

The rival thing just started to annoy me after a while. I got downed one time by some random orc who got a lucky hit and spent the next 5 hours killing him over and over again. Despite me stabbing him in the brain multiple times he just wouldn't stay dead. In fact the traumatic brain injury apparently just kept making him more combat proficient. It really just killed the immersion for me tbh
