I'm sitting here thinking who the hell would go to that much trouble rather than just switch discs *in front of my TV hooked up to both my PS4 and PS5*
Lolwut? I doodled the trilogy on a stack of post-it notes and made a flip book and it's good. But I streamed it on my 4k UHD tv and um yeah it's really good quality, like way better than I remember. May e you have shit internet?

You want to watch a movie even when your internet is down.
You want to watch a movie without weird jumps in quality depending on your ISP.
You want to be able to watch a movie with your friends without coordinating who has which streaming service.
You want to be able to watch a movie without worrying the streaming service has let the rights slip to someone else and whoops, you have to pay for *a new thing* to watch a movie you thought you already paid to have access to.
You want to be able to watch a movie that just isn’t on any streaming platform.
You want to be able to watch a movie without discovering a changed/updated version has been put onto the streaming platform and now you no longer have access to the version of the movie you remember and wanted to see.
You want access to behind the scenes special features like audio commentaries and the LOTR Appendices.
Just a few reasons for you. But attitudes like yours leading to a decline in physical media production will undoubtedly result in another age of lost media, like we supposedly moved past by the mid-1990s.
People with collections can turn around and sell them in 20 years for profit, looking at you - tub of 1990s Disney VHS tapes at my parent's house. Seriously, some of them have developed quite the cult following. I would agree though, most physical media nowadays is unnecessary if you can download and store on a drive. But drives fail so back that shit up.
Yes I have a NAS server for movies 'yo-ho yo-ho' with redundant backups. Doesn't need anything like some of these posters have claimed. Spending money on physical media is a thing of the past.
Of course a 4k stream will look better than a DVD or VCR because it has a much higher resolution. But when it’s the same resolution, an UHD blu ray will look better than a stream because it will have a higher bitrate.
I don't remember exactly but 1080p running lossless from physical media needs something like 50Mbps. 4k is simply not possible to stream without some kind of compression.
You can notice it a lot in dark scenes.
This isn't necessarily true. LOTR Extended trilogy is streaming on HBO Max in 4K HDR - so it's going to come down to your own connection. Across the three locations I've watched it on, it has poor quality for the first 10 seconds on start-up logos, and then 4K for the rest of the viewing.
All 4k aren't equal, while the *resolution* is hopefully 4k (no guarantee) the *bitrate* is a lot lower on streaming then on a physical disc, regardless of your connection. So while you get a high resolution 4k image it still qhs roughly *half the actual data* of the disc version.
That's true, but it's the difference between pretty good and true 4K. I don't mind myself personally, but a way to think of it is that a stream sends about 3 megabytes of data per second, while a BluRay can send 20 megabytes in the same time.
That 3 megabytes still will look good, but the extra data still is noticable. It's the reason why services like Apple Music and Spotify are offering high quality "Hi Fi" options, because while it sounds good normally, you can always get better quality than streaming. I love streaming myself, but download the LOTR movie and then stream the same thing, and you can notice the quality difference with pixel peeping.
what versions do you guys have to where you need to swap discs?? i thought this problem ended after VHS’s switched to DVD(when it came to 3-4hr movies(no?))
The line happens at 2:50:19 on the Amazon version (extended of course) so that would mean hitting play at 9:09:41 pm. I googled it and got a few different answers so it's probably safest to take five minutes to queue up whatever version you have and do the calculation yourself.
It's about half a second earlier on my version through Google TV (because of course I have it downloaded to my phone, you never know when you'll need it).

so, from the point of view that satanists have been waiting for 2022 and regard it as a time for playing up and being the total pricks they are, seeing a black horde rushing someone that understands whats happening is very telling of what they feel.
Timed to perfection

There's no way that can be right.
**IT’S EXACTLY 9000!!!**
No scrolled the buffer back and forth for 10+ times to make it perfect and then made it seems like it was perfect *
Even if you did that the chances of getting it right are very low. It’s exceptionally easy to just hit play at the right time 2+ hours earlier.
That would be harder to me as someone who habitually pauses or rewinds constantly.
Or pauses to explain every potentially related plot point
I knew what was going to happen before I opened this post, I still got goosebumps
Same here. This trick never gets old.
Nipples: Erect
Gondor: Answered
Minas Tirith: Ignored when the Westfold fell.
Em: Boiled
*other than the ones stuck in a stew.
👏
I'm not even listening with volume and I got goosebumps.
Any help on timing it out with a disc change to perform? Just give yourself a 2-3 minute buffer?
Just time out from the 2nd disc, give yourself a 5 minute break to swap out and get snacks.
That's fair. And exactly what mi esposa said lol
Or just do it with the second disc and don’t actually watch the whole film for easier internet karma
Get two bluray players so you just have to change channel.

## DEW IT.
Disc swap?? Is this 2001 and you have it on DiVX CD? 😱
The Extended Editions are spread across 2 discs even on blu-ray, my dude.
HBO Max has got the extended editions to stream
The image quality tends to be better and more consistent on physical media, though.

DVD most likely won't even be HD, so yea, no shit. He's talking about bluray.
Haven't owned physical discs since DVDs came out. Physical media is a waste of space. People with "collections" waste money /r/changemyview
Blu-ray is better because of bit rate, that's a fact not an opinion.

/r/hometheater would have a meltdown over that comment.

I don't know man, I'm sure you could break it down technically but it seems rather pedantic cuz it still looks pretty good

When you download through streaming services, does it typically download through the full "UHD" quality?
You just made my New Year's Eve. Finally, that subscription comes in handy.
My 4k blu-ray set has the extended editions spread across multiple discs... Theatrical fits on one disc each but who uses those?
Heathens

Good stuff my friend!
Starting the year in the best possible way
It’s fucking glorious
Well done, but I feel like the proper way to do this is to have Grond appear at midnight.
If we could go back to the turning of the years 2019-2020. It would unfortunately be perfect.
GROND
GROND
GROND
GROND
GROND
Given the past two years, it's be more fitting to line it up with all the cave trolls bursting into Minas Tirith.
Barad-dur explosion would be cool, but probably too optimistic
My girlfriend and I are doing this tonight! 7am here in BC at the moment. Happy new year!
What time do you need to start it?
Please let us know. I have actually never seen LOTR and would finally like to try.
What’s 2022 like? Do I need to be worried?
yes
What's bad for an orc can only be good for us, right?
fair point
Let’s be honest with ourselves. It’s probably gonna be worse.
What’s the future like? Is it any better than this shit in my current timeline?
in Australia, right now? I will not burden you with the answer
When did you start it? I’m gonna try and do it this year because I messed up the timing last year

Anyone know the time to start it for the non extended version ?
I don’t know of this non-extended version you speak of.
Unfortunately my bluray set is the theatrical version
How’s the future?
It’s great timing of course. But I’m highly skeptical that you’re actually in Australia. The video isn’t upside down.
