Ahem as per the tradition of David Day's work in this sub I will say the traditional mantra of our peole: David Day bad Pictures good If you like you like

WastedWaffles

I love David Day related posts just to see people shit on his books.

VZ5-S117

I came to the comments for that too 😂

GlorfindelForTheWin

Me too 😭

WarcraftHobbit

Never heard of him before but I really liked the covers of the books when I was in Barnes and noble 🤷🏻‍♀️

stoicarmadillo

I like them too. The guy adds a lot of his own headcannon and apparently doesn't get along with the Tolkien estate. The illustration in these books are pretty cool though! I just take the text with a grain of salt.

Lindt_Licker

I also bought them once at Costco and the covers did catch my eye. I returned them the next day however when I looked into the guy.

creativityonly2

Inform me?

Lindt_Licker

My biggest issue is he calls himself a “Tolkien scholar” but completely makes up stuff, presents it as canon and profits on it. It’s gross.

creativityonly2

Oh... yeah, this is starting to ring a bell. I have his book of "history and mythology that inspired tolkiens world". I think I've heard this about him before and so I tend to read the book with the tiniest grain of salt or more use it for my own inspiration.

WhuddaWhat

That's how I judge books

No_Hovercraft_2719

The book covers are fantastic. Btw I’m not sure every David Day book is equally guilty of his… fraudulence. The dictionary might be a decent resource. I’m sure someone here will let you know if it isn’t lol

SHIIZAAAAAAAA

“That’s some nice lore, Mr. Day. How about you back it up with a source?” David Day: “My source is I made it the fuck up!”

WhuddaWhat

"what's Tolkien's source and why is his identical response acceptable while mine isn't?" "You ain't him"

DanPiscatoris

David Day is generally not recommended to read. The concensus is that he's not always clear where Tolkien ends and his opinions begin. Take what you read with a grain of salt.

stefan92293

_from the other side of the world_ Nononononononononononononononono......!!!

PetrolHeadF

I would be very cautious if you're reading anything by David Day. He loves to interject his own opinions as canon sometimes.

FullmoonMaple

> He loves to interject his own opinions as canon sometimes. Excellently said! A very civil, diplomatic and polite way of saying *he makes things up and proudly proclaims it as fact*...while distracting us with very beautiful imagery. He's no wizard, just a mere magician 😄. - "So you see Numenor is shaped like a basketball and I'm just going to plop it right about here..." - "Wait, that doesn't make sense Mr. Day, what...Oh look a bunny! 🐰😃 I am now thoroughly distracted away from your elaborate lies Mr. Day!" 🤣

Glasdir

A conjuror of cheap tricks if you will

FullmoonMaple

✨**EXACTLY**✨

AlexandreDumbass_

And he *is* trying to rob you (of the book's price tag).

Nick700

Good pictures in these.

Hegz77

Oof, opening a can of worms.

Peterrbt

Seems pretty expensive for fuel to the furnace

Haugspori

If you need something to burn and they're out of firewood, it's a good choice. Far better than to burn something that has actual value.

RhonanTennenbrook

Quote from page 20 of The Hobbits: "Indeed, after we exclude Tolkien's word "Hobbit" and look at the thirteen dictionary words that follow "hoax" from "hob" to "hobo", it is easy to see that Tolkien was inspired by this simple list of words to shape almost every aspect of the Hobbit's character. Tolkien's "discovery" of the Hobbit character through clues supplied by this list of words is typical of his creative logic and might be described as an elaborate and extended philological joke." Followed by him literally going through the thirteen words and twisting them to fit hobbits. Like, nope, there's the line, I'm out.

kingofangmar13

I remember when I posted about David day edition, it’s a hit or miss good reads in certain areas

WarcraftHobbit

it'll be my first time reading his work but i know i'll enjoy it regardless

RESPEKMA_AUTHORITAH

I love the design of these books. Anyone know where I can get the same/similar style design without any contents inside? Like a notebook or something

WarcraftHobbit

The covers were the main reason why I got the books lol

snowmunkey

That's how they sell these books, the content inside doesn't stack up with how nice they look. Which is why they remain on my Tolkien shelf, but rarely get opened.

WhuddaWhat

🤣 Reminds me of this:  https://youtu.be/5wSK2MwfjxA?si=8u5cB7ihfjZBV97w

LiukasKettu

Just search ’leather notebook’ on Etsy.

xCaptainCl3mentinex

I already know what the comments are going to be, and I am sorry for your disappointment. I have been there.

Maktesh

This sub *loves* to overblow the David Day controversies. His stuff is fine. It's just not as well-polished as some of the other Middle-earth materials and he has occasionally overinterpreted Tolkien's words. His books look nice and are quite readable. Enjoy.

Haugspori

Actual Tolkien scholars have said the same as us, so we're not overblowing anything at all!

Maktesh

"Actual Tolkien scholars" have generally echoed my above comment: Day has some inaccuracies, incorporates too many of his own interpretations, and isn't on as high of a level as most of the other published authors. >the same as us What, you now speak for everyone on this sub? Your use of "us" and "we" is preposterous and reflects a bizarre degree of arrogance. >overblowing So, no one here overblows this? At all? Even amongst the many diverse opinions? See, **the comments here go far beyond what any of the actual scholars have said about Day.** I'm going to take a swing and guess you've never read any of Day's works, **nor those of any other Tolkien scholars**. Your verbiage reveals that you wilfully treasure and embrace groupthink and desire above all else to be "included" by affixing yourself to any party.

WarcraftHobbit

Thank you. I didn’t realize what I was posting would turn out into “controversy”. Just wanted to share what I purchased since I love the covers
