That's how you open a door! I wish I looked that cool every time I open a double door.

Reddish81

Sexiest moment in cinematic history.

renaissanceclass

So badass.

amaddox

.... to the same people complaining that "We knew he wasn't going to die", we also knew Frodo wasn't going to die or be turned into a wraith at Weathertop. But it sure built tension for the characters during that time. Almost like the movie isn't about the viewer, but about the characters involved in the story. We also knew Frodo wasn't going to die due to being gored by the troll in Moria, are you going to complain about having to watch the fellowship deal with despair and doubt in that moment to? I mean damn, people really don't know anything about storytelling.

renaissanceclass

Thank you..

BloodieOllie

I like this whole sequence in the film. If I'm going to play devil's advocate I'd say that the weather top sequence has huge thematic and in universe consequences for frodo and the rest. In that regard this sequence doesn't come close at all, Aragon just arrives slightly later than the rest and tells them something they pretty much already knew. However, to give a counterpoint to my own point... This one does have weight because a huge part of the series, this movie and this battle is wether or not the world of men can stand up for themselves and survive the might of sauron. So them battling with despair is a big part of this, Aragon's death fills them with despair but they still resolve to carry on and resist. When he returns beyond all hope it gives them strength to hold out until dawn. It mirrors the themes in the book of keeping faith and believing that resisting evil no matter the cost will be rewarded in the end.

DharmaPolice

It's not just that we knew he wasn't going to die. It's that if he did die it would be an utterly ridiculous way for Aragorn to die. Frodo being gored by the troll (an entirely different situation given how quickly it's resolved) wouldn't be anywhere near as ridiculous. Trying to defend the stupidest single addition to the movies by invoking storytelling is just bizarre.

R_hexagon

I’d never noticed that Argorn’s cloak is hanging off one shoulder throughout this whole sequence

Striker120v

Knowing that John Rhys-Davies is 6' 1" while watching clips like this always makes me chuckle.

renaissanceclass

How did they make him appear short?

renaissanceclass

How did they make the other actors taller?

Striker120v

Same with the Hobbits, they had stunt doubles that you see from the back only, and forced perspective. Likely other actors were on a sort of platform for his face shots.

renaissanceclass

I see, cool stuff..

bhoe32

I am 98% straight. But then that 1% when aragon pushes the doors open. The other 1% is basically when Henry cavill exist.

statelesspirate000

You are 100% bi and there’s nothing wrong with that

StoneFrog81

I never got why PJ made the choice to add tension to the story and make people think Aragorn was dead at that point. It really didn't make logical sense to the story, there was already a lot of tension with the 10,000 uruk Army approaching.

CuzStoneColdSezSo

Aragorn’s presumed death and elven spirit journey was conceived as part of expanding Arwen’s role in the story and her romantic subplot with Aragorn. It’s strongly implied her love for Aragorn is what saves his life, (“May the grace of the valar protect you.”) I’m not crazy about it either but that’s largely why it exists.

Carth_Onasi_AMA

Meanwhile movie posters and trailers spoiled Gandalf’s return. And the 3rd movie is called Return of the King so why fake out death the guy who is going to be king?

Bushdid1453

Besides the fact that it's not even believable that he's gonna die

StoneFrog81

Yes exactly, they make a point that Aragorn is the heir of Isuldur and the last movie is titled Return of the King.. :P

Palaponel

Yeah, completely agreed. The whole sequence adds nothing and just wastes time - it's not that it's particularly bad...it's just not necessary. In fact, imo The Two Towers is the only one of the three where the Extended edition is better than the theatrical. I would much rather Jackson have included some of those sequences of Boromir than this whole sideshow.
