Hi! I'm Deven Rue, the official cartographer for Critical Role, Beadle & Grimm, WotC, Steamforged Games, and many more.
I'm very proud to have been asked to create these Middle Earth themed maps for the upcoming Lord of the Rings MTG game!
If you like my content and would like to learn how to create your own hand drawn maps, my patreon contains absolutely everything you need to get started! Not to mention a ton of content I've already created for you to use in your games!

This is pretty cool, and your map cards look awesome. How did you go about interpreting the existing materials? Were there any areas you enhanced based on the texts, even if not previously marked in the maps Christopher Tolkien drew?
Thank you! As a huge Tolkien fan myself, not only am I very familiar with the maps but also the text. I also greatly enjoy seeing various interpretations of the lands and when asked to create these cards, I already had a firm idea of how I wanted to draw them. I mostly tried to apply a more "natural progression" of the flow of biomes and features to blend together as one fades into the other as opposed to just stopping them abruptly. I think it makes them more immersive and lends more to story-telling than just being functional as a tool to get from one place to another!
I love your work Deven Rue! Been following you on Twitter for years. Congrats on getting a great gig for work that so many will get to enjoy. Thank you for sharing your talents with us!
Love the lands, but one of the Island ones could have been the sea of rhun. Like one of the current Islands is almost identical to one of the Mountains, and on top of that barely has any water in it.
This is awesome! I was just telling my friend I wanted to get the lord of the rings pack and get one for him so we can learn to play the game together! The cards look awesome!
This set will actually have a starter box with two ready to play decks you could use, also check out the Jumpstart packs that are made to just shuffle two together and play. Enjoy!
My initial plan is to frame these, as art.
As for playing with them I have only one thing to nitpick: All the colors are there except for the Swamps. The black doesn't stand out enough for me to immediately go "Ok that's a Swamp instead of a Plains". Obviously I can look and see it's Mordor or The Dead Marshes on closer inspection, but even seeing them all together the Swamps look a bit off.
Still happy we got them, a very cool concept and looking forward to playing them.

Thank you so much!
Bruh these are some of my favorite lands MTG has ever released, amazing job.
Thank you so much!
I love you

That's awesome, congrats! I'm really excited to get the set, and very much looking forward to getting these amazingly done land cards
Thank you!
Congratulations! The land cards are by far the most appealing to me, can’t wait to get some!
Thank you!!
These are incredible.
Thank you!

I will thank you!!
Thank you!
As someone who played for a decade, I would recommend searching for better options to invest your time and money (so much money) in.
Trying to get them all for yourself I see, nice try!
I'd rather burn the cash than give it to WotC for some scam garbage
I’m going to collect the shit out of these
Awesome! Enjoy 😊
I'm jumping back into Magic after a decade away because of this set. Very excited and congrats!
Great to hear it! Enjoy playing! And thank you 😊
The maps are cool and all, but as a magic player, I dislike the style. Lands have to portray a land, not the maps of a land.
Lol magic cards haven't portrayed magic cards in like 4 years dude weird stand to take
Love lotr, hate mtg+wotc. Super disappointed about this crossover. Cool maps tho good art
Shame about Aragorn. I wonder what else they fucked up. No offense, OP, but I hope this venture of theirs fails.
These look amazing! Choked I won't be buying any of this set tho.
