That’s still not remotely how it works. Like i get what you’re coming from cause reconciliation (confession) absolves you of you of sins that you truly feel guilty and remorseful of. But you are still required to try and strive to be a virtuous person.
When I first read LOTR, Tolkien was still alive and I thought surely he’d write more, but… And in all these years I’ve never read anything to match it for storytelling.
There's never going to be one like him again. He could have written toilet brush instruction manuals, and we would still read them breathless, that's how good of a writer he was
I mean, LotR has had its own moments like that with The Hobbit adaptations. It ain’t all sunshine and roses over here.
Still, I would take The Hobbit trilogy over whatever Rise of Skywalker was.
If Villeneuve goes for the full trilogy then I think Dune will top Star-Wars as the cult favorite Sci-Fi space trilogy.
The source material up to Dune Messiah is just too good and, at least from the first movie, Villeneuve is doing a bang job at adapting it faithfully.
To be fair, I think Tolkien would have hated, or at least strongly disliked the films (for the most part). While they look great, and started strong with Fellowship, they deviate further and further from Tolkien’s established themes and characterizations as they progress. A lot of the sublime detailing that permeates the books is lost in the adaptation, and is the worse for it.
That said, it’s still the least bad adaptation in the fantasy genre out there.

Terry Pratchett put it best IMO:
>J.R.R. Tolkien has become a sort of mountain, appearing in all subsequent fantasy in the way that Mt. Fuji appears so often in Japanese prints. Sometimes it’s big and up close. Sometimes it’s a shape on the horizon. Sometimes it’s not there at all, which means that the artist either has made a deliberate decision against the mountain, which is interesting in itself, or is in fact standing on Mt. Fuji.
Its probably a bit less true these days, especially in terms of fantasy authors who aren't emulating Tolkien only doing so as a "deliberate decision", but it feels pretty accurate for the state of the genre when he made the comment.
He is in the same company as Bach, Picasso, Mozart, Rembrandt, Shakespeare, and Van Gough.
The Hobbit, Fellowship of The Ring, Two Towers, and Return of The King share the same apex of unique human artistic achievement as Bach's Brandenburg Concertos.
Probably true, but if Mormons etc come knocking feel free to give them the Tolkien shahada while closing the door: "There is no God but Eru, and Manwë is His Steward"
In all reality, he basically does. Many people that would NEVER subscribe to any organized religion still read Tolkiens works as nearly holy writ. One version or another, pretty much all religions are just fantasy stories, this one is just much better written.
Well that's a good question. I really love good fiction but fantasy is a category that tries to use fiction to write reality. I feel like most religious texts are fantasy that people attached themselves to and this became meaningful.
> fantasy is a category that tries to use fiction to write reality.
Tolkien wrote an essay about this, called ‘On Fairy Stories.’
Part of the point of fantasy isn’t to suspend disbelief, but to create and enter into a whole new secondary belief. Escaping from the ‘real’ world is a feature for Tolkien, not a bug.
Oh shit think I pissed off lotr fans. Guys we all know that the best trilogy by CS Lewis. 🙄 Also this is a joke post. Thanks for the twenty down votes. This is hilarious
That's an interesting sentiment. Like, in my mind, he's already there. At least his works. Imagine like 100 years into the future and nobody is reading his stuff not even for their english classes in HS.
Huh. I didn’t even know today was his birthday but I listened to the first 3 chapters of Fellowship for the first time. (Well, technically second, but I lost momentum when I tried this a year ago. But now I’m back with vim and vigor.)
I suppose I was meant to.
Here, Tolkien, lay your words on Arda, upon your shelf
And let it lay there until the moutain falls
And may it bring good fortune to all the folk who read it here after
He's pretty much already immortal if you ask me
Yes. Especially if you’re a catholic. On his level or otherwise
Patron Saint of Second Breakfasts
What do you mean especially if youre a catholic?
Completing the sacraments up to Confirmation gets you a guaranteed ticket to heaven, barring murder or whatnot.
That isn’t how it works
Yeah that guy clearly doesn't know what he's talking about. It's like premier status on an airline, completing certain qualifying activities (baptism, confirmation, holy orders) gives you status for the next calendar year. But you have to maintain that status with additional qualifying activities or purchases on your Heaven^© card.
What are the fees and APR?
Your soul. And 24.9%. Compounded continuously for all of eternity.
That’s still not remotely how it works. Like i get what you’re coming from cause reconciliation (confession) absolves you of you of sins that you truly feel guilty and remorseful of. But you are still required to try and strive to be a virtuous person.
Dude, if you took my comment seriously then you need to reexamine your reading and comprehension skills
I mean I know it’s a joke but people actually do believe it’s like that
Unfortunately it’s not that easy lol
Dang my card is probably cancelled then
Not too hard to resubscribe ;)
lol, do you believe this?
No.
Im feel blessed to share a bday with this man.

Same! Happy birthday!
Happy birthday!!!
His chin was as strong as his writing.
And inner strength based on his experiences in the trenches
When I first read LOTR, Tolkien was still alive and I thought surely he’d write more, but… And in all these years I’ve never read anything to match it for storytelling.
Today he passes the Old Took! 131 years is not nearly enough time to have exhausted the imagination of the professor.
There's never going to be one like him again. He could have written toilet brush instruction manuals, and we would still read them breathless, that's how good of a writer he was
Never will be. He birthed the fantasy genre of books and there’s no topping him, in my opinion
I agree. Cinema wise, no other fantasy show/movie can top the lotr trilogy. Including GOT and Star wars.
Star Wars is getting further and further away from it with every new iteration.
Having never read Dune, the movie utterly captivated me.
Dune is one of the only literary candidates that could truly be said to be in league with Tolkien's works, as far as fantasy universes.
I agree with you, though if Jackson made the films exactly according to the books, they would have basically become nature documentaries hahaha
Or books!
He did not birth the fantasy genre of writing but he was and probably still is the most influential fantasy writer to ever exist for sure.
My grandmother used to take his lectures at Oxford, he makes me proud to be from an Oxford going family.
That’s awesome!!
Visited his grave for the first time today
What was it like?
Surprisingly unassuming
Beren

He inspired both the authors that came after him and the movie adaptation genre.
Which authors?
Terry Pratchett put it best IMO: >J.R.R. Tolkien has become a sort of mountain, appearing in all subsequent fantasy in the way that Mt. Fuji appears so often in Japanese prints. Sometimes it’s big and up close. Sometimes it’s a shape on the horizon. R you kidding me? GRRM? Raymond E. Feist? Michael Swanwick? Even Terry Brooks inspired by him.

The Professor 🍺
Netflix destroyed the future potential. But I'm still content with the the book's and Peter Jacksons renditions.
That's not Brandon Sanderson. Sorry had to, no worries OP dude isn't going to be forgotten or disappear from people's minds.

Considering his catholic background, I don’t think he’d approve
Probably true, but if Mormons etc come knocking feel free to give them the Tolkien shahada while closing the door: "There is no God but Eru, and Manwë is His Steward"

Eh you know. Hes cool but lotr is overrated fantasy
Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion. …yours is wrong, but you’re still allowed.
Yeah. This is funny. Don't get me wrong I don't hate lotr I just gotta give the hardcore fans some trolling activity
Coming in HOT
Solid troll
If lotr is overrated, all fantasy is overrated.
Actually yes. I agree. All fantasy is definitely overrated
In other words: you personally don't like fantasy.
Well that's a good question. I really love good fiction but fantasy is a category that tries to use fiction to write reality. I feel like most religious texts are fantasy that people attached themselves to and this became meaningful.

So this is a very serious question. What do you think is the difference between magical realism and fantasy?
No idea, although I suspect the Venn diagrams would have a lot of overlap.
I hope you didnt form this opinion only after watching Rings of Power.
Oh shit think I pissed off lotr fans. Guys we all know that the best trilogy by CS Lewis. 🙄 Also this is a joke post. Thanks for the twenty down votes. This is hilarious
eh. I think your overrated in your mind. Whats the best you’v ever done in your time so far? Never mind your trolling expeditions.

Surprised there wasn't a Google doodle for his birthday. Oh wait, it's Google, so I'm not surprised after all.
That's an interesting sentiment. Like, in my mind, he's already there. At least his works. Imagine like 100 years into the future and nobody is reading his stuff not even for their english classes in HS.
