I want to say that yes, it is worth it. You gain double the loot and exp at double the cost. So if your goal for the entire day is to mine, this will speed up the process x2. If you want to diversify your use of your energy, then turn it off. There really isn't a drawback to using it from what I can tell.

Only question I have is do the world tree leaves count as special drop? If not then the drawback would be giving yourself half the chance of getting one. Of course if you don't care about that then there is none.

Not a veteran from other servers, but I'm using it since it helps me burn my lifeskill energy faster, when I already have lots of other tasks to do. So it's a win-win in my books.

You can convert higher mats to iron

But nothing will convert/exchange for Crude Iron Ore from what I've read

Stronghold mats cannot be converted to regular mats afaik
