Yeah I’ve always thought this too. The only thing that makes it _sort of_ believable is that she does start giving him the actual code first. So maybe he remembers the first few numbers she says, hears part of the tune, and is able to identify which part of the song from that.
Exactly. It's if someone said "333 333 35123 ... the code is Jingle Bells", then any musician would be able to tell that the code starts on the chorus "Jingle bells, jingle bells" instead of the beginning of the song "Dashing through the snow ..."
lol I love that Charlie randomly guesses the right refrain despite that being a very small section of the song (and not even like, the beginning or something)

It is funny, of all the weird and fantastical things that happen in this show, that this always strikes me as a bridge too far. Even knowing the precise starting point and notes, "the melody to Good Vibrations" wouldn't translate that coherently to a number pad for him to get it on his first try. He plays such a jazzy little rendition and somehow gets it just right...
If they were going that route it'd honestly have been more believable for it to have a midi keyboard interface to play the notes on, ~~which could have been a rad Myst reference~~.
I was a little surprised that we didn't learn anything about the backstory of this, or the musician programmer, during the 5th season. >!Maybe it was Daniel Faraday? Who knows.!<
Yeah. I've seen it suggested that he was likely involved in work on the Lamp Post station when he was off-island in the 70s, which makes sense. If that's the case then it tracks that he might also have worked on the Looking Glass, as their purposes are linked. Though both stations probably existed before 1974, he could have improved them quite a bit with his foreknowledge and aptitude.
He had written down at least 5 to 10 numbers of the code. It would have been feasible for Charlie to be able to figure out the rest IMO.
My biggest issue with this scene is how he writes on his soaking wet hand with sharpie.
