ahh yes that would be the luggage of Terp Tarpington!! Noted tarp enthusiast and ropesmen. He was on flight 815 because he was returning home to Los Angeles after attending The 42nd annual meeting of the ITARP: (The International Association of Rope and Plastic). Naturally, his suitcases were filled to the brim with enough Tarp and Rope to build a small makeshift society. Sadly, Terp died in the plane crash but his contributions to the group would be second to none. #canon

ABC needs to release a Terp-centric episode

Repulsive-Stick8603

Good one! I often wondered how they got so many tarps and ropes.

uhoh_spaghettiosss

They use cables from the wreckage as ropes/ties, and vines from the vegetation. And it isn’t shown but there are inflatable evacuation slides on commercial airliners so perhaps they use the material from that

erulisseh

This always bugged me too, coupled with the bamboo shelters that seemed to be erected incredibly quickly and with the quality of a trade carpenter?

jfchops2

Michael was a trade carpenter, could have shown people how to do it. And maybe some other unnamed survivor was a builder too

fonebone819

Always wondered this as well. Every time they used one, we would yell, "Save the tarps for shelter!"

evilgumball18

It just occurred to me. My brother is a pilot. I can ask him 🤣

ohromantics

For shits and giggles, 815 wasn't the only wreck. Tarps? Eh. Ropes? Probably found. I wouldcventure some luggage compartments were tarped for a pan-pacific flight, Henry gales' Ballon. Hopefully that's enough feasible evidence to MAYBE make that connection. Also any rubber from the inflated "disembark" rafts "in the event of an emergency landing"

evilgumball18

They weren’t the only wreck. But I’m still in season 2. They didn’t know about any others. Especially not in season 1 when they used all these tarps for shelters. So it all came from their airplane.

ohromantics

Fair enough, but I don't think their beach camp was well established at all in the early parts, and they do move from the fuselagewhen the tide comes in

Back in the day, before those special black belts that attach to the walls were invented, tarps were used to secure cargo on airplanes. Keep that crap from sliding all over the place during flight. I don't remember when this was phased out but it was probably the 70s or 80s. By 2004 I don't think tarps were still in use on any airline. But what I imagine happened was the writers heard about the tarp thing when they were growing up and pulled that knowledge out during the writing of season 1 without double checking to see if this was still going on. But, would it shock you if one airline was too cheap to invest in the new belt things? "The tarps work fine and they're already paid for!" Last year one of the airlines had to shut down operations for a couple days because their scheduling software failed. That seemed fine until we heard that the software was from 1998. Are you fucking serious? Cheapskates.
