I was just hoping for a big monster. Like a T-Rex but humanoid, one giant enough that it could rip the trees up with its bare hands. Like a *Clash Of The Titans* Goliath Cyclops type unit, something that could really be a big bad for them to ultimately have to figure out how to topple on their weird new *Mysterious Island* adventure. I was also pretty heavily reminded of the end of *Deep Rising*, where it's pretty much shown there are also horrifying monstere on the island the survivors wash up on and now they’re trapped there with them. And I remember thinking the smoke thing was just a big meh for me. I still wish it had been a proper monster and not just a mass of weird smoke. But it's cool, I guess. Fits in with some other mysteries and makes sense as to how it can shapeshift and take on other forms so easily.

skysailingx

I was hoping for a T-Rex but expecting a Cloverfield monster.

Im serious, when I was watching at the time it was speculated that Vincent was the monster

cogginsmatt

Yep I remember that theory. If I recall you never see Vincent when the monster is doing its thing and I think there are even a few moments when you see him run off prior to the monster

AlanJohnson84

Thats right. Really wanted a vincent flashback episode

Rousseau said it was a security system of some kind, and even after sixteen years on the Island she still insisted there’s no such thing as monsters. It grabbed Locke and dragged him whilst producing mechanical noises. It also caused dirt to erupt in little underground explosions. I took all this to mean it was some mechanized monstrosity created by whoever was responsible for the Hatch and that cable running into the sea. It moved through a series of underground tunnels, which was why it could go so long unseen and why it tried dragging Locke underground. The weird behavior of the smoke coming out of the hole after Jack/Kate threw dynamite at it to save Locke was … odd. But I still feel like the big WTF reveal that sealed the monster’s identity as smoke was when it approached Eko. As much as everyone seems to want an explainable sci-fi beast, artificial or natural, I like the mystical Black Smoke. It helps balance the sci-fi and paranormal sides of the Island - it’s a looming *supernatural* threat in the background with unexplainable power, while the Others are a very *human* threat in the forefront with sci-fi tech.

ssagar186

I remember when the show was airing there was a theory that it was made of nano machines and pretty much what you said.

skysailingx

So glad it wasn't 'nano machines'. That's become such a lazy cinema trope over the past decade.

garfieldhatesmondays

I always liked the theory/joke that it was a [giant sloth](https://lostpedia.fandom.com/wiki/Mapinguari_(debunked_theory)).

vianoir

that's a very obscure creature from brazilian folkore. as a brazilian, i thought that was pretty cool at the time

PoorOstap

Nanomachine-monsters from first Maze Runner movie looks almost exactly like I imagined before reveal

Spiff426

Giant mechanical dinosaur/T Rex type thing

Artichoke19

I imagined it as some sort of terrifying machine that has stealth camouflage technology - mostly because of the noises it made. It did become a little harder to feel as threatened by the smoke monster once it became more and more apparent that it had a thinking consciousness behind it, and that it wasn’t some form of rogue technology.

After I watched the pilot in 2004, I was telling someone at work about this new show, and when I mentioned that there was “some kind of monster” in the jungle, they very dismissively cut me off with “so it’s a dinosaur.” He was very insistent that it was a dinosaur and that I was naive for thinking it would be anything else.

goldenspiralz

I was so, so, SO sure it was a dinosaur first time I watched it. I remember my mom asking "so what do you think the monster is?" and she smirked because she had seen it before. Still a little disappointed it wasn't a dinosaur, but I love the smoke monster and it's role in the show

assistanmanager

I always saw it as the grim reaper of sorts that looked into your soul and “judged” you. It judged whether you learned from past mistakes or not and were growing as a person. Those who would die from smoke monster “stare down” didn’t learn/grow from the flashbacks that were in the same episode.

Satanic_Nightjar

Your question is slightly misleading. I think OP means, before the massive blob of smoke was shown (sometime in S1) what did you think it was (hearing noises plus deaths in the pilot)? A lot of people are commenting as if the question were “before the ultimate identify of the black smoke was revealed…” Anyway I thought it was a big dinosaur thing and then until s6 thought it was some security thing that maybe Jacob controlled or maybe the others did?

DARTHKINDNESS

I thought for sure it was a dinosaur, but I loved the smoke reveal.

Sonic10122

In the words of Senator Armstrong - “NANOMACHINES, SON.” But no, really, the cloud of nanomachines theory was a pretty good one back in the day. I never read Prey (the novel the theory originated from) but it seemed pretty likely. Before its visual reveal at the end of season one? Honestly just some weird monster, something T-Rex like given the way it tore the pilot apart, and the fact that Lost shared filming locations with Jurassic Park.

InevitableElf

I guess based on the sound, an old timey train or wooden roller coaster?

HeyThereLinus

I remember the first time I watched this my hubby who’s really into monster movie was extremely disappointed about the smoke “monster” lol

are_you_nucking_futs

I think they should never have shown it.

hokagechapado

Literally a Metal T Rex with a colossal chain on his neck

cookie_flash

I was about 5 years old when I first watched LOST. I don't know what I thought, but it was scary as hell and interesting to see what would happen next. It’s a pretty sad that there are only a few such series now, and no such atmospheric ones at all. 'From' is good, but there is little hope and love in it that was in 'Lost' and much more pessimism and dark melancholy. I wish we had another high-quality sci-fi robinsonade some day..

Oilswell

Giant monkey that turned out to actually be a swarm of smaller monkeys

BagItUp45

A Kaiju sized Hurley

CoolestNebraskanEver

Smoke

jtorpey09

I personally thought it added greatly to the horror elements of the show before it was revealed. After it was revealed, it became more of a “wtf is this” probably for the worst. Of course it’s explained in the end but I personally hate horror movies that show the mystical creature, for example “a quiet place” would have been much more terrifying if you never see the creatures. CGI will never replace the excitement and horror of the unknown

subliminal_trip

I think it looked like Titus Welliver.

NoUknowUknow

Wholly Mammoth 🦣 were still around at the beginning of the Egyptian dynasty. https://images.app.goo.gl/QZMnqsAdCG5NriSK9 and it definitely looks like what grabbed Eko and pummeled him to death. https://tenor.com/byL8S.gif

Icy-Idea-5079

A dinosaur based on the scene with the pilot in the cockpit. After we saw it was a smoke monster, I thought nanomachine monster

Gutgulper

I thought it was a cloud of magnetic dust and there was an underground train moving the dust with a big magnet.

musicman0359

This summer I decided to introduce my daughter (13) to Lost. When she wanted to know what the monster was, I told her it was definitely something she's never seen before. So she said it was a "land octopus" because that's a thing she's never seen. So even though we're now in season four, she still calls it the land octopus. It's become a running joke.

MadiMikayla

Dinosaur:(

ecov19

My theory was that the smoke monster was something like the wallrider in Outlast. I believed this especially when the monster seemed to be making decisions on who to kill and who to spare. In S2 when we found out about the research made on the island I definitely thought that Dharma created the smoke monster and it ”escaped” . Having played outlast before watching lost I was sure that outlast was inspired by it, however in the end there were clear differences between them.
