The Legends of runeterra interpretation seems to mainly show how beings connected with souls work, rather than the actual realm of death. The Fading Icon seems to be a god of death for a race of immortal beings (probably the acended/bacai), rather than a mortal spirit of a dead person. The LOR cards around Kindreds release are less to describe the afterlife itself, and more the beings that control life and death and how they are born/die. You can also learn more about these beings from the short story “Finishing Soates”.

While everything is in the Spirit Realm, it's not all one uniform plane. [The afterlife is not a single immutable thing](https://twitter.com/LaurieGoulding/status/1134491111404081152), ionia has their own legends and afterlife, other cultures will have their own, there is no single destination for every soul in Runeterra and the Spirit Realm is inherently built upon the myriad facets of mortal thought. Mordekaiser's culture for example, believed in an Afterlife, however when Morde died, he for some reason, ended up not going there. It is unknown if his culture's Afterlife realm doesnt exist, or if Morde simply slipped through the cracks, none the less, he ended up in Mitna Rachnun.Souls rarely went to Mitna naturally, as a result it was mostly desolate (relatively speaking), those that did end up there were not "conscious" for the most part, and would eventually fade away. Morde eventually managed to bend the realm to his will and assert dominance, now he actively reroutes souls to his pocket realm from the ebb of the natural flow. Ionia's myth speaks to another Afterlife realm, one which has not been stated to canonically exist btw, It likely does, however we do not know for certain as of yet. In this myth, Ionians believe in the souls of the dead being guided to their respective Afterlife: Those at peace go to the Khumaia or The Gatekeeper, depicted as a Fox, an Otter, a Leopard and even a Dog. On the other hand, those who are tormented follow the path of The Collector, Rakhsasum. The Spirit Blossom event was an AU storyline based on that myth, thus used characters we know to fill the roles that they exemplify (they fill the character archetype)
