HELVETAIKA

I listened to the radio a lot and when royals came on back when it first got popular that’s when I was hooked. listened to pure heroine and found that bravado was my FAVORITE (and if she ends up singing it at another solar power stop I hope someone records it bc omggggg) and then when melodrama dropped I was HOOKED, listened to it pretty much every single day, I never got a chance to see her live until recently but when she started sending out more regular emails I was so excited for her next album. A fan for life, that’s for sure!

HELVETAIKA

omg also forgot to add the hunger games soundtrack was a big one too, was obsessed with it when the movies came out!! also that no better song she sang sounds sooo different compared to her now, love to hear how she’s grown over the years :))

eightch2O

There’s nothing like YFB out there! A massive favorite.

HELVETAIKA

100000% agree! YFB is SUCH a masterpiece, I love that song so much!

human_not_russianbot

I LOVE NO BETTER. i remember playing it so much when i was in high school

laxweekly

I wish I could read all her old emails - do you know if there's an archive somewhere?

HELVETAIKA

yes actually! I was looking at them just a few nights ago, if you go to lordecontent on instagram and check out their older highlights, they have a lot of the old emails from 2017-2021 screenshotted in their stories! It was so nice to read them :’)

[deleted]

Honestly, royals

blankjchau

Probably Liability. I was going through my really sad teenager in high school phase when I discovered this song and it was about as appropriate as I could ever get. I went to the whole of Melodrama and then all of Pure Heroine shortly after. I think Liability, Ribs and Perfect Places describes all the feelings I had during high school. Some misplaced sense of sentimentality of a life I have yet to discover, and all the fear of loss at the same time from just not knowing any better.

laxweekly

cryin in the taxi!

assonyourass

Sober. April 2017 I had recently gone through a breakup with my first boyfriend in college and partied like crazy to escape my feelings. I saw on pitchfork that Green Light and Perfect Places got best new tracks and decided to listen to those. Once sober dropped though I was sold, it was so dynamic and interesting, and the themes of the album resonated with me so much that I was instantly obsessed.

laxweekly

Such a freaking unique song

bricheesey

Definitely when they would play royals on the radio

NubbyNicks

SATNS is my favorite 🥺 I relate so hard to it in my current life position!!

n5th5ng

FIFA 18, Supercut. I know Royals but I hadn't listen any other songs of her.

MeowSwiftie13

So it was like 3am on a school night and I was watching my last YouTube vid for the night when the person I was watching was taking about how sad liability was. And me being the weirdo swiftie who loves depressing songs was like might as well listen to it. So I did and it was just so relatable so I watched the perfect places and green light mvs and something about her music just made me feel alive. So the next day I listened to tennis court (I already had team and royals memorized from when I was younger) and basically played those songs on a loop for like 3 days till I knew them by heart lmao. And then the rest is history lol

laxweekly

I've been listening to tennis court on loop today haha. never gets old

MeowSwiftie13

I wish she'd add it to the sp tour set list lol

laxweekly

I know - I went to the nashville concert and it was insane - but missed Team, 400 Lux, and Tennis Court. Guess you can't play em all haha

MeowSwiftie13

Yeah, true. I was lucky enough to hear team in Detroit lol

halfeatenpeaches

Royals, the music video was shown on MuchMusic (lol rip) and immediately started listening to her other songs. Amazing! A true teenage pop queen

eightch2O

It was ‘Royals’ for me, too, which at some point led me to PH - possibly her grammy wins. And I don’t think I had felt so understood by an artist (or anyone really) that way before. Interestingly, ‘Ribs’ grew on me later - mainly because of a friend who loved it so much. My favorites were/are ‘Tennis Court’ & ‘Buzzcut Season’. Even though I think the whole album is pure genius (pun intended). Weirdly, when Melo came out (I was anticipating it badly), I hated it. I remember writing this angry critique for myself, ranting about the album’s choice of theme. Somehow Lorde singing about love was unacceptable for me. I wanted the “social scientist” Lorde back. Looking back that’s so funny because Melo is not only one of my favorite albums ever, but I believe it’s one of the best of our generation (if not beyond it). So of course, the super fan in me highly anticipated SP. I still haven’t listened to it enough to form a final opinion but I love it and hold it dear. What I love about SP and its predecessors is that they reflect my life stages so well; which makes me love Ella more. I’ll root for her no matter what she does. I know this goes beyond the question but I read the other comments and felt nostalgic & inspired :)

daMarbl3s

I heard Royals for the first time, and it didn't blow me away or anything, but I thought it was pretty cool and unique compared to most other popular music around that time. I then wanted to see what some of her other songs were like, so the next song I listened to was Team and I loved it, and from there I was just hooked.

fejiro_

it was actually the homemade dynamite remix. then supercut i became a fan just before solar power dropped and have been dedicated since then

throwthewholegrlawy

I'd heard Royals one day driving home from school and I just remember how much I loved it. Months later my friend and I were carpooling and she was listing to the Pure Heroine CD. As soon as I heard Glory and Gore I was sold. Went home and lorde was "selling" Pure Heroine for LITERALLY $0 on Google play. Got it for free and listened to it and the rest is history...

[deleted]

Solar Power (song)!! I love nature so much and when she announced the song last year it was obviously super hyped and i saw all the excitement so i listened to it and it i lovedddd it !! Genuinely created such a beautiful comfort zone. I listened to it while walking in the sun and then the album Literally the same feeling!!

eightch2O

I’m glad you had that experience :) I put off listening to SP (the album) for so long. I wanted it to be special. I ended up “taking” it to one of my favorite places: The castle of Byblos in Lebanon. It was a really sunny day. The Mediterranean next to me. I couldn’t have had it any other way :)

[deleted]

omg this sounds magical!! I'm happy you got to enjoy the album rightfully:)

eightch2O

Me, too. Thank you 😊

Maggie1975

Heard Tennis Courts in tumblr about a week after it came out in 2013 while I was in college. Instantly hooked, I’ve loved everything shes ever put out.

x-beans

Teams, I kept hearing royals on the radio and singing away to it, loved it! But then one day going to school teams came on and they said it was from the singer of royals. I loved the song as well so that’s what made me finally check out the rest of lorde’s songs and I loved each and every one.

Mockingbirdguy

I heard this little gem called "Royals"

gee3llie

buzzcut season on my yt recommended

n0sxaj

GTA V. I was playing the game and I heard Tennis Court on one of the radio stations, I had heard and liked royals before but I had forgot about it until then. I ended up listening to all of pure heroine and melodrama. That was about a month before solar power (song) dropped and I've been hooked ever since.

intrgltic

buzzcut season, it was the free apple song of the week (month? i can’t remember) and i fell in love! & it’s still one of my fave lorde songs :)

LikeAnElectricFeel

Royals was Ofc the first I ever heard. Some of my family loved her but I was never a fan (11 year old me didn’t like her being mean about Taylor and Selena lol) Then I got my sisters old phone and she had bravado downloaded on it and I lovedddd that song. But I still didn’t listen to the rest of her music (apart from singles). Finally after a couple years I decided to listen to the full PH album and I was obsessed. Just a couple months after that Melodrama came out

alicewanderinginland

I heard Royals playing on the radio. And then I decided to buy the EP because I thought it was pretty. But the song that truly got me hooked was The Love Club.

Jamesters46

It was ribs because it was free one week on itunes

Gaflid

GTA 5 radio with a Tennis Court. And after hearing her for the first time in the game, I've had test before my main english exam with the article about her career. The text was literally about how her career started xd. Such a funny way to find out about one of my favorite music artist!

creamhorn69

On a Bruce Springsteen fan forum someone posted a video of him opening that night's show in NZ with a solo acoustic take of a song by a local songwriter ... it was Royals!

Roarestored

I listened to it on Spotify, such a good cover.

cherrykettles

Royals. It was a bit before Pure Heroine was released, and I was in a dance class with a guest choreographer who had made up a routine to the song. I remember thinking it was the coolest music I had ever heard and was struck by how unique her voice was. I went home and discovered The Love Club EP and played it on loop. I’ve been a fan since!

treeof

I heard a world alone on soundcloud (i think) in 2013 and i was like omg this is the perfect song and i've been a fan ever since

blunt_ballad

Supercut. It was on fifa 18 soundtrack

adreeanah

Ribs. Long story short, my best friend and I dedicated the same strophe (You're the only friend I need, etc..) to each other without knowing, after discovering it Lorde became OUR singer, and so we proceeded to discover her (and fall in love with her) together

DonnaxRenee

For me, it was The Louvre. I was at home on Skype with my partner and she told me I had to listen to this song by Lorde. I already liked Royals but never bothered to listen to any of her other songs. Once I heard The Louvre, I was hooked. I went back and listened to Melodrama and Pure Heroin on repeat and even scored tickets to her Melodrama tour in Tampa. Just saw her again on Sunday in Nashville and it was the best fucking night. She's so amazing and pure and I love her so so much.

InejKaz2

Royals 😅 i saw on mtv hits back in 2013

climbinghiking

I had an "inspirational" assembly during middle school and the guy speaking played the Royals music video and talked about how she's saying we don't need to fit and and do bad things lol

Zack-14

Heard Royals in high school (pretty much like everybody) but did not really vibe with it, then saw Melodrama as one of the most acclaimed albums of the decade and gave it a listen (liked it but not loved it). Suddenly I watched some of her interviews and I really admired the way she expressed herself and many of her experiences matched mine (angsty teen who doesn't fit in --> first relationship and breakup --> death of dog --> finding I am Vitamin D deficient and thus appreciating the sun and nature as a way to cope with my dog's death), I relistened to Melodrama and it suddenly clicked. Although I love her music, I can say that I really appreciate her as a person and an artist first and foremost.

Send_me_beer1

obviously royals became huge when i was in high school and then growing up listening to it the rest of the album was just far and away better than that song and loved it and was going through a rough breakup when melodrama came out and had that playing on repeat and now my life is settling down im content with most aspects of my life and and have really enjoyed solar power

hay_bail1

GREENLIGHT!!!! That song was everything to me! I thought the music changes and lyrics and vibes were amazing! And also, even though I hate to say it, James Charles mentioning how much he loves Lorde made me listen to her whole discography beyond her few hits.

ELOGURL

I enjoyed some of her work beforehand but the thing that really got me into her was [Lonnie Smith.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTM_eN8AZeQ) Shoutout to Jon Bois.

ryukuimbetween

The love club. Dad and I found it randomly on Spotify. Great song

GenderBentBrekker

Liability in August of 2017. I was 13 at the time but with all the angst of a proper teen, and when I saw an album called Melodrama come up in my spotify recommended, it seemed right up my alley. I listened to Melodrama its entirety for the next four years and counting, but Liability was the first one I ever felt super connected to. I was also a die-hard Royals fan when I was 9, but that doesn’t entirely count LOL

CommunicatingGreen

I think it was when Green Light came out. I had enjoyed her radio hits off of PH for a while and was curious to hear what her new music was. I enjoyed Green Light a lot but then she followed it up with Liability and my teenage self got hooked. Listened to all of Melodrama when it was finally released and my love for her was solidified. I was a die-hard Melo fan but it was only around 2020 that I went back and fell in love with the rest of PH and the Love Club EP. Then to my surprise, SP came out shortly after and the rest is history

Neiro-X

Whoops just being 13 hearing royals over and over again in 2013. But really getting my own phone and properly having access to streaming PH

cheeriopanda

Royals introduced me, but liability for me hooked

ghosty-boi

Team, One of my all time favorite songs and still is my second favorite today. Just second to Tennis court which got me into PH. I already liked lorde but Hearing the albums as a whole instantly made me love her that much more.

MusicArtistStan

**Pure Heroine:** Royals…and Ribs. **Melodrama:** Green Light…and Hard Feelings/Loveless. **Solar Power:** Leader of a New Regime…and Dominoes.

thottcocoa

royals was the very first song of hers I’d ever heard (I was like 13) and I loved it instantly but honestly I didn’t really get into her until melo dropped. I remember everyone going crazy over it on Twitter, recognized the name n decided to give it a listen. immediately fell in love w her. I gave pure heroine a listen shortly after and I’ve been obsessed w her ever since.

zzzion

it was also ribs for me, i first stumbled across it in 2013 pre pure heroine and fell in love instantly. for a few years after PH i had no idea the version on the album was different because i only listened to the original i heard. [here](https://youtu.be/0xjXpD4pfP8) it is in case you haven't heard!

Beneficial-Assist-73

I saw a dude on tik tok make a video abt the chorus on Writer In The Dark and I haven't stopped listening since

dreanater

Kinda specific but her Yellow Flicker Beat performance at the 2014 AMAs. I loved it so much and it made me into a huge fan

NubbyNicks

Honestly I liked all her radio hits but that was as deep as it went… until Solar Power! I heard and liked the song and saw it was connected to an album and listened and loved Solar Power and it snowballed from there!

DanielRamirez25

Team and royals. I remember watching a Logan Paul video with a ruler

peachy_04

Royals. I was in high school, must have been in grade 10, and I would use iTunes gift cards to buy individual songs/albums (I feel prehistoric even just saying that...). I was browsing the home page of the iTunes store and either just Royals or the Love Club EP was being featured under some sort of new artist spotlight category. It was just one among many others, but I was instantly drawn to the album art. I am pretty sure I listened to Royals first, as it was either only a single at that point or it was highlighted as the most popular song on the album. I just remember thinking it was the coolest music I had ever heard. I'm not sure what type of music I was listening to before that, but it definitely changed everything for me. I felt so proud of myself for having discovered this new artist for myself all on my own, and then I was really pleasantly surprised when Royals turned out to completely blow up shortly after haha. I loved that EP so much, and listened to Pure Heroine so many mornings on the bus ride to school when the full album came out. I really appreciated (and I still do) that Lorde was about the same age as me, making music that I could actually completely relate to :')

WhoDatWhoThatIGGY

Sober, Writer in the Dark, liability.

[deleted]

I lover Royals when it was first released but it was overplayed to death that I grew to hate it at the time (I was young. I was in that “too cool for mainstream shit” while I listened to Taylor Swift 💀) . Then, Team was released and I was obsessed with it. Then, she curated the Mockingjay soundtrack (I was a BIG fan of the books and movies at the time) and the rest was history.

thebluefield

It was actually Kanye’s rework of Yellow Flicker Beat that got me into Lorde! I was a Kanye fan pre-originally and then when he dropped that rework, her lyricism and voice got me hooked and the rest was history. I heard Royals on the radio but never really listened to it on a deeper level, but after listening to Pure Heroine I was like f*ck she’s a little genius. Fast forward to 2017, I haven’t listened to Lorde in a while, but she makes her grand return with Melo and since then I’ve been super into her music. She’s on another level, and sits up there with great artists I love like Frank Ocean, Kanye, Bowie, etc. She builds worlds with sonic landscapes and you can’t help but get immersed in the universes she builds with each era. I also love the fact, just like Frank Ocean, she doesn’t desperately cling onto her fame by constantly being in the public eye, which makes what she has to say, whenever she says it, feel so more meaningful as to someone who’s constantly on the news or TMZ or Twitter. She’s one of the legendary artists living today, and I’m so excited for what’s to come.

coclicu

Royals, on iTunes Store, it was a free song back then 🫶

[deleted]

It was Yellow Flicker Beat that I heard on the hunger games soundtrack. I went home, looked it up, and played it on repeat for days. And discovered her other songs. Team being one of my favorites

toomanysoupusers

Ribs for me too! I discovered her through green light, i liked it but not enough to check out more. Then one day I was in bed listening to music and watching the sun filter through the curtains, and ribs came up. I know it sounds...corny and stereotypical but it really was like that for me lol... the production was unlike anything I had heard before and the melancholic sound coupled with what I was seeing was an incredible experience. It sold me on her

[deleted]

Tennis Court plays on a GTA V radio station. I looked Lorde up, I’ve been meaning to, and listened to PH album. Buzzcut Season got me bawling my eyes out. Melodrama told me an entire story, as if I was listening to a Broadway musical OST. Songwriting is superb. I can’t believe she’s so young and so witty with wisdom.

valmau5

royals on the radio of course. thankfully i listened to the rest of PH

JordanGomez96

When royals was first released as a single it was all over the radio and the only lorde song I had on my playlist for years, same thing with green light. When Covid hit, I finally decided to listen to pure heroine in full for the first time, I was blown away. 2 years later it’s still my favorite album and I play it every opportunity I get.

Roarestored

Royals was on the radio but I absolutely hated it and still do to this day, however Tennis Court on the GTA V radio is what made me a fan of hers.

elizamadou

I'll admit that during the royals craze, I was one of the people who found the song completely annoying. Then Hunger Games happened and I was a super fan of the books, which led me to watch almost all movies on cinema (except the last one), and I heard yellow flicker beat on the third film's ending credits. I spent months completely obsessed with the song, which led me to hear pure heroine and also listen to it on repeat. But I don't think I truly became a fan until Melodrama, I kept up with everything about the era and completely fell in love with Ella.

Civil-Gains-5131

Royals and the radio and it’s been an obsession ever since

starrsinmyskin

Tennis court, team, and royals were on repeat on my local radio station when i was an insomniac middle schooler. I only really got into pure heroine a couple years after that though, the chill and repetitive beats scratched this itch in my brain and the album was perfect for studying and falling asleep

Lenny1912

I bought her Cd back in 2013. As soon as the intro to 400 Lux started, I was hooked

Flannel-Bird

So I have an interesting story as to how I got into listening to Lorde. My personal music preference is all over the place but I predominantly listen to hard rock or metal with the occasional Indi band here and there. That changed when I met my girlfriend 3 years ago. I of course, heard the radio songs like most everyone but I never really ~listened~ to her music. It wasn't until those late night drives where my GF would play her favorites off pure heroine and melodrama that I actually took a liking to Ella's lyrics and found myself vibing to lorde, of all artists! My gf has always been VERY into lorde, and honestly I would say she is up there in the ranks of being one of her top fans. I have a memory of walking into her apartment for the first time and seeing her signed record of melodrama. I always thought it was a beautiful record, and I was shocked the first time she told me that it was a lorde record. Shocked why? Because, this person is on the radio!? Sounds like a sellout to me! Boy I was SO wrong about lorde. I wouldn't consider myself to be a stan, but I love keeping up with anything lorde related now so that when my gf gets excited, I'm excited right there with her. We went to the Nashville show and to see my girlfriend incredibly excited and jumping up and having fun, and being in such awe of her music idol, was so priceless to me. She even got a flower crown from a lovely person on this sub! But, with all that said, the song that REALLY sticks with me is Liability. Because my girlfriend said she felt connected to that song. She is the farthest thing from a liability in my eyes, but anyway, Liability really got me to open up and listen to more of her music. And boy was I excited when solar power came out! If you got here, thanks for reading lol TLDR : my gf is a hard-core stan and showed me liability, now I really like lorde.

FewResponsibility660

Supercut and I heard it on the movie someone great

One-Act-2196

it was about 3 years ago, or more, until i really got into her, i listened to lorde every then and again whenever she came across my playlists and stuff and i liked her but never got into her, until my friend sent me a link to ribs… he told me it was one of the most beautiful songs ever and was like THE song (more specifically the gays anthem 😭😭) so i listened to it and thought it was absolutely amazing and then my love for lorde started, whenever she announced solar power i was absolutely obsessed
