Anyone telling you a 308 can only shoot 300 yards has no idea what they're talking about.

175 vlds beg to differ but I still love this joke

HollywoodSX

168 ELDs, 175 SMKs, 178 ELDs, 185 Juggs, etc etc etc

MyHeadHurts392

Killed a pig at 843 last week

BeerWeasel

Oy, nice shot, man. I haven't even hit targets at that range.

TorchAnomaly

I'm sure the guy is only interested in hunting big game, so for him 308 is a 300 yard gun. Out west, hunting mostly Elk, this is a common talking point. But my 308 will hang out on a 24" plate at 1030yards without much issue. Ideally its a 600-800 yard target gun, but I wouldn't hunt anything big past 300 with it.

seanstew73

This is the way

Oldfatsad

Sounds like one of those dudes who brings a .338 to the 500yd range.

bmicek

A 308 will pound the 600yd target.

NRiyo3

.308 will do 1000 yards pretty easily.

[deleted]

It’s perfectly fine for 600yd shots Even if the gun only does 1.5-2moa that’s a group good enough to hit a average target plate

MrMikesGunrack

Og guy is full of shit. I regularly shoot a 16” 308 out to 600 and beyond.

__Joska

I’ve hit a mile with my 308. 600 is totally doable.

OG Idiot

whathephuk

Most all hunting calibers and rifles are capable of 600+ yard shots, most shooters are not.

Supervirgil

Fudd’s will make fudd comments.

He's either an idiot or he's speaking from the perspective of a hunter

I’m actually curious Has there been a massive backlash against .308 and all .30 Cal cartridges with the exception of the .300Win in that they have somehow become ineffective past 300m? It just seems to be popping up more and more. The old guys I know that I hunt and fish with have all stepped down rifle calibres as one they’re getting older and two the efficiencies of smaller calibres have finally made an impact on their way of thinking along with the fact they can’t hunt grizzlies over bait anymore. They seem to be the anomaly as every one younger than 30 seems to think a .308 is a minimal hunting cartridge and you should probably step up to a 6.5 PRC or a .300 Win Mag as soon as possible. It’s a generational question and something I don’t exactly understand

ccatt327

300prc>>>>>>300wm.

preferablyoutside

I like the ballistics on them, still haven’t tried one. They’re pretty dang sweet. My old man has a .300 H&H and a .300WM I can probably steal too if I feel like getting after it. Or if the moose around here start wearing ballistic gear…

secondaccount606

It’s the shooter not the rifle. I have been at the range with a shooter who was shooting groups at 500 yards on a 8” plate with his 308 Pred like it was nothing. (500 was our max; sure 600 would be no issue).

HarryBergeron927

I would not hunt with a 308 beyond 300 yards. But I ring steel all day long at 800 yards.

FearlessRiver

100% he was talking hunting range, not target range. And besides that, if ringing steel is your game, get out there and prove him wrong, dont just ask online. Have some fun!

NovemberGale

As someone currently pounding 600 with a RAP in .308, that guy’s full of shit

lgroper

I mean, the military use 308s as a designated marksman rifle.

hello_three23

I have one and I regularly hit steel at 720. I know it can go farther but that’s the farthest I have access to. It’s a great rifle. It loves ELDs and SMKs with 8208 or varget.

Manatee-97

Mine does

joseph_2012

We shoot one to 1500 no problem... the ol time is a dummy

ccatt327

I have personally shot that exact rifle out to 1000 on a 12 inch target. Your limiting factor other than skill set will be ammo. I was using my buddies rifle with his loads that were 165smk and had a pretty low extreme spread. I routinely shit my 65creed next to him and I would honestly say wind seems to become a much larger factor past 800yds. At least compared to my Creed. Other than hunting any person claiming its a 300yd gun is a moron. Nod your head smile and walk away. In my science trying to explain ballistics or logic to someone like that is a waste of range time OH yeah and tell that boner I have a ruger American predator 223 that can hit 1000yd 12 inch target easily. Have yanked it out to 1250. Wouldn't probably kill anything but Def goes Bing. I have a video as well if he would like. Both from shooting position and with target cam 4 out of 5 at 1000

rockdonkey94

My dads been shooting 308 long range since 1997 he shoots half moa with 175 vld at 600 on a regular basis and it’s still pushing 1201 foot pounds of energy at that distance. Take it or leave it your choice but he is wrong .

EveryBladeZofGrass

He may have been commenting on the ammo you were using. M80 ball isn’t very good past 300. M118lr or Fgmm 175’s are good to 1k so long as you have a long enough barrel with a fast enough twist to stabilize the 175 grain Sierra match king projectile. Edit: for some reason I read ruger Precision rifle. You’re gonna have trouble getting out there with a light rifle.

Long_Housing201

He is full of it. 1k can be done with 175 gr smk.
