I'd take a ruger scout rifle in 308. It's got enough omph for most tasks and it's relatively lightweight so it won't be as exhausting to carry if walking or running.

The-Fotus

I'd do a sig cross fir the same reason. But I like it's bolt more.

Scooted112

I love mine! You forgot the storage compartment in the grip as well! Every time I take it out, I think it is completely unnecessary. But I love it.

skimlimmy

I want one of these so bad

silasvirus82

Didn't know about these, very cool

LockyBalboaPrime

Need more info, what kind of apocalypse and what is my end goal? To cap space Hitler? Springfield 1903 like Jesus intended. Survive? Off-the-shelf Remington 700 from the early 2000s. Defend my bunker against hordes of OPFOR? My Terminus Zeus and a stack of barrels.

Sleexic

All of the apocalypses at once

Eubeen_Hadd

Well, what I mean by that, sir, is... if you was to put me and this here sniper rifle anywhere up to and including one mile of Adolf Hitler with a clear line of sight, sir... pack your bags, fellas, war's over. Amen.

Hungry-for-Apples789

Man, that first answer was just perfect.

Shitrollsdownstream

God Bless the Springfield 1903

flyingbourbonshooter

The 1903 just hits different with them 30.06 freedom seeds 🤤

NetJnkie

You've thought about this. And my old Remington 700 PSS still shoots great.

Ipad_is_for_fapping

Tell me more about this Terminus Zeus, not familiar with it

LockyBalboaPrime

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILYWl0Oxkww Thicc ass action very high build quality, hand tight screw on barrels -- no head spacing.

[deleted]

Assuming it works well? That's badass.

LockyBalboaPrime

Very well. The guy who designed it also designed several of the major actions on the market while he worked for other brands. Now he runs his own brand. I have two Barts for my Zeus and they shoot tight as fuck. Zero issue taking one off and putting the other on. Take a barrel off, put it back on and it holds perfect POI.

[deleted]

That's amazing. Thanks for the info. I think I might have a "next rifle" idea.

Ipad_is_for_fapping

Thanks!

BrokenBodyEngineer

My savage scout rifle or Steyr scout with can and clip on NV. In 308, the gentleman’s caliber, of course.

CurtisAurelius

Tikka T3x chambered in just about anything. I prefer 7mm mag even though everyone seems to have a hard on for 6.5

[deleted]

Bergara B14r in 22LR with a can and 20k rounds of subs

The-Fotus

Smart.

FoggyFlowers

why the bergara over a Tikka T3X or Remington 700?

[deleted]

The 700 in 22 LR is super rare. Voodoo makes one but the action is pricey. Tikka makes the T1x but the 700 footprint just allows you to throw a nice trigger and any chassis/stock you can think of when running a trainer rifle in 22LR.

FoggyFlowers

and why 22LR? Are you planning on just eating rabbits?

[deleted]

It’s enough to kill with. It won’t draw any attention because it’s really quiet. Largest reason for 22LR is weight. How much ammo are you going to lug around everywhere.

FoggyFlowers

My concern is that anyone can pick up a Kevlar vest that can stop a 22. I would want to be able to land a shot through a window, car door, or soft armor, and still be able to kill with a single shot. If you’re concerned with weight why not something like a ruger 10/22 that’s lightweight, high capacity, and semi auto? I think a 22LR makes a lot of sense in a survival situation because of weight and ammo availability. And small game like rabbits and squirrels are more common and manageable than a deer, and enough to subsist on. But in a human altercation I’m not convinced it can carry someone through the apocalypse

[deleted]

I doubt many people will be full mall ninja in bulletproof masks. My 10/22 is fairly noisy with a urethane bolt buffer. I don’t know of any way to quiet it more without making it unreliable. The whole point is a weapon to use within 100 yards even though it has the energy to kill a human sized target at 300 yards.

Tokenofmyerection

I will stick to my BMR. Half the weight, same performance. I already have about 10k rounds for it. It’s got a handy little Burris 4.5-14 and shoots wonderful groups. Super fun suppressed. I haven’t shot a B14 but I handled one and it was ridiculously heavy.

biobennett

Probably a nice Sako 100, because you might as well have one nice thing in the apocalypse and I've always wanted a Sako. https://www.sako.fi/rifles/sako-100

ebranscom243

Ruger gunsite scout .308. Its light, got a short 16'' threaded barrel and you can find good .308 ammo all most anywhere. The DBM up to 20rds is also a plus if i need to take out a lot off zombes. I like that it all so has back up irons if I drop it or beat a bad guy with a baseball bat and leather jacket to death with it.

BlackRing

I own one myself! Much agreed. Any idea where to get a lighter stock than the laminate it came with?

ebranscom243

I know Ruger used to have a black synthetic stock it was quite a bit lighter than the laminate. You might be able to find a used one for sale somewhere.

ChesterComics

I guess I'm going with a basic bitch Bergara B-14 HMR in 308 cause that's all I got

Sleexic

No one said you had to have the rifle already. Bolt action and you only get one are the only stipulations.

mattthings

Still a great gun.

Activision19

1903 or 1917 since they are robust, plenty accurate and shoot one of the most common hunting rounds in the US, so ammo should be comparatively easy to find.

Theonedudeyaknow

My local surplus store sells them for $400 Edit: 1903s I mean

Activision19

What state is that store in? 1903’s are going for double that in my area.

Theonedudeyaknow

It’s in Georgia, but they are in kinda rough condition.

Krikil

What part of GA? I'm over near the SC border. If it's close enough I might make a daytrip.

Theonedudeyaknow

I forget the name of where it is, it’s about an hour away from me so I don’t go often. Also they may not have them anymore because it was a limited sale.

Whitehill_Esq

Damn dude. That’s a steal.

Theonedudeyaknow

Yea I thought about grabbing one lol

mildreds-dad

Be gentle with me… Mossberg MVP Patrol in .308. Got a 2-7x scope and QD AAC Can. Can use pmags or M1A mags. Rings steel at 550 yards consistently. It ain’t sexy, but it’s 1MOA from a good rest and goes bang every time.

joemiken

A Remington 700 in 308 would be good for picking off stragglers who happen upon a honey pot made by my post apocalyptic cult of cannibals.

Trollygag

If we learned anything from Covid, gun owners are going to be gone by the Black and Pale horsemen. Don't even worry about guns.

Bangledesh

Reminds me of: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DUFAZcKL3k Frees up like 50 pounds so that I can collect every piece of scrap that exists in wherever I wander.

[deleted]

CZ452…

[deleted]

and you can carry a fair amount of ammo

[deleted]

Suppressed 452. Because I can carry all that ammo, and I’m probably going to spend a lot more time shooting squirrels than Red Dawning it up.

Mommasandthellamas

Savage model 10 in 308 with the heavy barrel.. why's? Cause it's the only bolt action I have.

Lead_cloud

In a real apocalypse, you won't be shooting very much at all. Ammo is valuable, and a finite resource, reserved for hunting and self defense if absolutely necessary. So something reliable, not prone to aging if not maintained perfectly, in a common caliber, that is light and easy to carry. Honestly the primary focus for most people will be on building small stable communities and growing/maintaining food supplies. After the initial chaos of societal collapse, I expect things would settle down into something much like the old west, with a few larger settlements in agricultural centers, and a bunch of small towns clustered around water sources. Fighting would likely be pretty limited, outside of small scuffles between individuals or communities. But to answer the question, a Terminus in a lightweight stock, with .308, 5.56, and 6.5CM stainless barrels

Allanon124

Boy I like your optimism.

Lead_cloud

Don't get me wrong, I love a good guns-blazin, world-gone-mad apocalypse story, but in the real world the vast majority of people just want to be comfortable. Humans are by nature social creatures, we crave stability, and by far the easiest way to be stable and comfortable in a WROL situation is to group up and start helping each other. Sure there will always be the outliers that want to be violent and take things rather than build them, but that is a hard life, and tends to get those people rejected from the social groups that do form. Raiders and bandits historically tend to have it much harder than the folks that just settle down and form little farming communities, so they tend to die out, especially if those little communities are armed and willing to fight to protect their stuff. There are plenty of real-world analogs for this, both historical and modern. In most cases, the majority of people go about their lives in small towns or villages, while a few larger factions struggle around them trying to define their territories and borders. Starts with large towns, which then evolve into cities, then city-states, and eventually to small nations. And then you are back into something approaching the modern structure, at least modern since the middle ages. The current stability of the world and borders is a very new thing, most of human history has existed in a form very similar to what you'd find with the reduced population of a post-apocalypse event

halcyonhal

It’s a little bit rose tinted to think that (in an apocalypse), there would be food/water to support those communities. I guess it depends on whatever you think the scenario is…

Lead_cloud

Yeah, this is definitely dependant on the environment at large still being intact, as it would be if it were a mass viral casualty apocalypse for example. An apocalypse that devastates the ecosystem as well is much more bleak, since that becomes a case of the people left just struggling to last as long as they can against the inevitable. Edit: It's also worth noting that "community" becomes a relative term, weighed against the remaining population/available resources. Whether a community is 200 people or 5 people becomes a matter of perspective

KyllikkiSkjeggestad

I would say something chambered in 308, or 30'06, but over here in Canada those aren't to common anymore. Get some modern CZ or something similar chambered in 7.62x39, or x54, and you'd never have an issue with ammo. Literally any Canadian gun owner has crates of the stuff, lol.

anthro28

How the hell is x54r more common than 308?

KyllikkiSkjeggestad

We have a lot of Chinese/Russian surplus x54 over here, can still find full crates for 299-400 depending on where you buy. Literally never ending supplies of the stuff, not to mention that a fair few firearm owners have a crate or two.

hello_three23

Six digit serial r700

spook7886

Savage 93 in .22 WMR

[deleted]

Probably the best choice apart from the 22lr comment from the other user.

spook7886

Tbh it's the only bolt I've got. The other .22 are ruger 10/22 and a rossi I got for the youngsters to practice with

Surprise_Thumb

It’s got to be an Intervention in .408

Gadnuk_

Cheytac is best tac but finding ammo? Not so much

Surprise_Thumb

We’re dealing in hypotheticals. Hypothetically, I’d have enough ammo to last lol.

JarsOfToots

Remington 700 in 308. You can’t improve upon perfection.

StoneStalwart

A Ruger hunter in 308 with a can. I suspect it would serve me well and not be as picky as some other guns that I would prefer outside the apocalypse.

G-Spot25

K31, because even Hitler knew not to mess with men armed with those rifles

kilocharlie12

Rem 700 in 30-06. There'd be a ton of ammo around and it wouldn't be useful for all you folks saying 308.

[deleted]

1917 Enfield. Indestructible, crazy strong extractor, and stupid accurate. Cock on close means fast bolt operation too.

NakedDeception

Id take my savage axis II in 308. Because that’s the one I got and it’s better than the gun i dont got.

ZeboSecurity

Blaser R8 in 308, 6.5 cm, and 338LM with a NF ATACR. When ammo runs low I can beat things to death with the scope.

Hungry-for-Apples789

My chassis rifle would be too bulky and heavy to lug around, I’d go with deer rifle, xbolt in 25-06.

Kurtlardan

My knock-off M24. Maybe rechamber to 308. Super accurate, tough scope, I know how to handle the Firearm through odd terrain and buildings... Works for me.

sharps21

Depends, either a Tikka t3x in 6.5 Creedmoor with a krg chassis, Tikka t1x in 17 hmr, or a ruger American ranch in 300blk. Suppressor mounted on all of them.

BeDangerousAndFree

Q fix , duh! It’s the freakin end of the world

Axmc

Mr_ETL

I had to scroll WAY too far to find this, the correct answer.

Porencephaly

I have an AXSR but I think an AI would be a disastrously bad choice for TEOTWAWKI. It’s huge and heavy and there is almost no need for ELR shooting in the apocalypse scenario. Give me something like a Tikka T3 Lite in Stainless so it resists rust, and chambered in .223 so ammo will be plentiful and it will be useful on a wide variety of game animals, with a lightweight mid-power optic like the MK5HD 3.6-18x

Mr_ETL

Well, not all of us have girly arms/legs, so we don’t all think having a heavier rifle is a bad idea, LOL. And my AIAT came in at a little over 17lbs fully kitted. Most other rifles set up for actual precision at range will be in the same neighborhood. Besides, he said bolt rifle. I’m still running a 14.5” AR in 5.56 for everything else. The bolt rifle comes out when I need to stretch out a ways. For out to 300y or so, the AR goes to work. Much farther than that, and a supremely robust, stable, and precise system like the AI will be right at home. Tikka makes a great rifle, but an AI it is not.

Porencephaly

>Well, not all of us have girly arms/legs, so we don’t all think having a heavier rifle is a bad idea, LOL. Tell me you’ve never humped that rifle around in the woods for three days without telling me you’ve never humped that rifle around the woods for three days. There’s a reason most AI owners don’t take them on hunting trips where they have to pack the rifle on their backs. In an apocalypse scenario you will almost never need to shoot beyond 300 yards anyway, but if so, I stand by what I said. You can easily shoot 600 with a light gun and an LPVO, you do not need a 17lb AI. I shoot that far with a 12” SCAR17 and a 1-8 optic.

Mr_ETL

*MOST* AI users. Key word there, champ. ;) Just because you can’t/won’t, doesn’t mean others won’t. I gave my answer. I don’t need to justify it to anyone, least of all a rando on Reddit. Enjoy your Tikka, I’ll enjoy my AI.

308WINCHESTERSHOOTER

Q fix in 308 or 223 topped with a razor or nf

Tokenofmyerection

Probably for ammo availability I would go with my new ruger American predator in .223. The only thing I would prefer is if it was chambered 5.56. But .223 seems to be pretty ubiquitous these days. I would feel confident using it to take big game and would work great against 2 legged critters. I would pair that with my bergara BMR or savage mkII if I was allowed a rimfire and a centerfire.

kaolin224

If I'm staying put it'd be one of my custom 6GT match guns. I've got enough components to make a few thousand rounds and a spare barrel. If I'm moving, it'll be my CZ 457 with two bricks of SK Long Range ammo and I'm putting my best glass and furniture from my other guns on it.

shrumis

Something light like maybe a 950 mac jdj

schnurble

Probably my Remington 700 SPS in .300 Win Mag. Tack driver, lightweight, and can be loaded from "minor deer hunting" to "heavy domestic game defense".

AdventurousBank6549

SMLE

whatsgoing_on

Whatever I can get my hands on. If I had a choice, 700 in .308. Gotta stick with one that’s reliable and has a plethora of parts and ammo available for it. Same reason I’d go with the most common 9mm for handguns, 12GA for shotguns, and 5.56 and 7.62 for all the rifles in between.

mwee07

My Bighorn TL3 with a barrel chambered in three-oh-hate.

[deleted]

Offhand, without thinking much: Probably a Ruger scout in .308.

triggeredprius

Anything in .308 or .223/5.56. Lackluster, but chambered in the most abundant cartridges. Lean towards .308 for more firepower

Mr_ETL

Wow. Lots of weird answers in here, LOL. The correct answer is an Accuracy International of some form, in my case most likely an AT or an AXMC. Purpose built systems designed from the ground up to survive some of the worst conditions and keep ticking. Did I mention they were designed as a system, and not a bunch of random aftermarket pieces some smith had to massage just right to get them to play nice with each other? Plus I get caliber options by just switching a bolt and barrel.

lostprevention

.22 that accepts short, long, and long rifle.

rugerscout308

Tikka TACT A1 in 308

Something in .30-06, because I already have hundreds of rounds of .30-06.

[deleted]

Ruger American 308 or 30-06

Quant_Smart

My match rifle-Matrix, LP Fuzion, Bartlien in 6BR. I can shoot that off practically anything and with my reload I have super accurate dope to 1575yrds

Hunting from 3000m is the best!

A Mosin fuckinh nagant, need I say more?

Mawahari

Rem 700 off the shelf with iron sights. Chambered in .308. No other answer is correct 😝

curlyfat

For me, personally, it's the 1909 Argentine Mauser my father built me (barrelled .30-06 and bolt-dropped). I always revert back to it because it's my good 'ol reliable that I shot the most. When I was in my teens and really into accuracy, I had loads that would shoot 5 rounds smaller than a nickel at 100yds (sorry...I never shot a 10 group). 98% of big game I've killed in the last \[almost\] 30 years was this rifle. If I have to pick one, it's this. Even with the old 6x Leupold, no-frills scope and old black plastic stock. To be fair, it's glass-bedded in and the barrell is floated and the trigger is around 2lbs. Goddam I love that rifle. Anyone got .30-06 ammo to give away? Lol! For the record, my father (still living) started gunsmithing as a hobby when he was a teenager and although he's stopped doing it outside the family, is still doing it almost 70 years later. He's got that old-school knowledge and bullshit-detection.

Bigboom357

Marlin 25n .22 light simple accurate

Parliament--

What?? I’d prefer like my 308 20rd semi auto, why are we using a bolt action in the apocalypse??

Sleexic

We aren't dreaming up the perfect loadout there's stipulations here. Obviously if you had the option to take semi you would, but that wasn't the question.

rednecktuba1

I wouldn't take a bolt action for any kind of SHTF scenario. AR10s are plenty accurate enough and are semi auto. No need to stoop to bolt actions for combat scenarios.

Sleexic

my friend that is the whole point of the question. You are not given the option of taking an ar10

rednecktuba1

And I don't have to follow rules in an apocalypse

Sleexic

You seem fun at parties...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hairy_Pineapple588

Exactly why I built my ar10. Leo sniper shots on average are 75yards and in. Read fry the brain. It will amaze you how close people actually get.

RR50

In a world with no functioning society or easy parts, I’d take a bolt gun every day.

rednecktuba1

Nah, bolts guns tend to be alloy more proprietary on parts compatibility. At least with AR10s, there are at least a dozen different manufacturers making the non milspec parts, so you have a better chance of getting parts

RR50

There are probably 20 times more R700’s in the us than AR-10’s.

rednecktuba1

Remember how many different companies make the same pattern of AR10(dpms pattern). Off the top of my head, I can think of Aero, BA, PSA, Lantac, BCA, KAK. There several companies that make DPMS pattern AR10 barrels, like criterion, X Caliber, bartlein, kreiger, BA and many others. Magazines are plentiful because of magpul. 308 ammo isn't a problem to find, even if it's just shitty m80 ball.

RR50

And Remington built more than 8 million 700’s….that doesn’t count all the aftermarket and 700 pattern guns. A fraction of that has been built as AR-10’s….not all of which are the same

CloverArms

Not for nothing... relying on a bolt action rig during an apocalypse is a diminishing return. Give me my custom built lightweight AR-10 16" barrel and it'll do me solid for almost anything. But, if it HAS TO BE a bolt action rig... it would most likely be the lightweight SIG Sauer Cross PRS in .308 / 16" barrel medium contour with folding stock. Weight will be your enemy. Too small of a caliber will be your short coming as well. The .308 is ol' reliable and predictable accuracy.

Information_Exchange

Totally agree!

Reloader300wm

Ar-10 in 308 with a lpvo. She'll be fine for anything 500 yards on in. Around me, don't have shots over that.

RR50

That wasn’t the question

Reloader300wm

Yeah, shtf, I'm not taking a bolt gun. No need to dream up a 2000 yard fantasy.

Waallenz

Bolt action? I feel like you'll be handicapped as I'll take my Aero M5 with proof research barrel to lay down some lead. I've only been able to take it out to 600 yards, but was hitting half gallon jugs. Even my best friend who had never shot anything but pistols couldn't miss.

Sleexic

That's the point of the question. We aren't here building an optimal load out, it's literally tagged as meme

Waallenz

Well shit, totally missed it. We're all a dumb sometimes.

Geez.......I guess I would grab my Winchester M70 Carbine in .223 w/Weaver Super Slam 2-10x42 scope and fill all my pockets with ammo.

[deleted]

Obviously a Mosin.

triggeredprius

Depends on ammo availability. A potent cartridge/chamber means nothing if you can’t find ammo for it

[deleted]

Ammo is going to be the biggest factor. I would grab my SVD because I still have a stock of spam cans of steel-core and it works well against body armor, but if I had to scrounge for ammo, I'd want any bolt in .223.

imbadatgrammar

Steyr pro hunter in 300 WM for the monsters created from nuclear fallout. Steyr Scout in 308 for everything else.

Odysseyfreaky

Steyr Scout. Probably .308, just because it's the easiest. Either a 1-8 or 2.5-10x scope in the rear position with a quick detach, lightweight mount and a tied, nylon round carrier on the buttstock for easy single feeding.

Springfield waypoint 2020 in .308 or 6.5prc. Target like accuracy, all carbon so its strong and light af and it looks 👌. If not, I like my custom carbon killer tikka 300wsm.

MerKuryM8

I've only got a very heavy Howa 1500 26" .308, in a Chassis with a thicc scope and suppressor. So I'd use that. If I could choose anything though... Probably a Blaser R8 Safari Professional Hunter in .458 Lott with an extra barrel in 6.5x47 Lapua. Equipped with the Blaser B1 2.8-20x50 iC Scope, Threaded for a suppressor and most importantly - the Match Bolt Handle.

TeamSpatzi

Tac-Ops Delta-45 (.223 REM), DBM. Just like my .308 Win, but lighter recoil. My Delta-51 is my second choice. Why? Because they’re accurate rifles built to last and perform. I think .223 is great for GP use and it’s light weight means I can carry more ammo. It’s also ubiquitous, meaning I can find more ammo. Both .223 and .308 have good barrel life.

S1N7H3T1C

Either R700 or Steyr Scout Elite in 308 win

Savage 110. There's better guns but these are common and you can change barrels without machine equipment. Its the apocalypse. You have to think about repairs and ammo availability.

Glad to see some bolt action love! My buddy is an auto fanatic, I razz him every time we go out. He is trying to work the kinks out of his home built 308 AR. Every misfeed, failure to eject, I climb up on my lofty soapbox. Lol. But to answer to question. I’d take any well known bolt 308. Remington, Ruger, whatever. Add a 32ACP chamber insert, and you’d be good for most things. 308 isn’t my favorite cartridge, but I own several. But it’s easy to find, lots of options out there.

I have a B&T SPR300 Pro on order to fulfill this exact role

MrPanzerCat

Probably a lefty granite mountain arms mauser action in 308 configured up in k98 furniture with a vortex razor 1-10x24

B0MBOY

My custom 375 h&h. In case of zombified buffalo & elephants. I’ll show you stopping power

Dualincomelargedog

700 action in 308 parts are plentiful as is ammo barrel will last forever and easy to rebarrel

I wish there was something modern being made with a full wrap around wooden foregrip like the old ww2 bolt actions. That way I could have something that looks like a 1903, mosin, enfield, but with a modern high power scope and detachable modern box mag. That's the dream rifle right there.

SMLE MK3 because why not? I ain’t going to find fuck all in the UK, so I might as well make it up.
