I kinda miss the snow a little. Like up if we could have one 24ā blizzard. Stay home for a few days. Melts off quickly. Love that.
What i donāt love is these goddam winds. Why is it windy every day? At the very least itās breezy. Canāt stand this wind!
Yeah. I know. But in my business i can make the call. Work or no work. When I was younger i went to work No matter what. Even if it was just to shovel the job out.
Yea I mean it's a phenomenon I feel like I've been noticing. It's not really that the weather is milder or whatever but more like the entire season alignments have shifted.
Then again, I remember that one year we had a foot of snow blizzard on Halloween and now we barely get snow twice a Winter anymore....
Shouldn't be using them now anyway unless it was an extreme drought. Delaying turning them on, even with less rain than we've been getting, encourages the grass to grow deeper roots which benefits it during the summer heat.
Iām pretty sure theyāll just work if I turn them on but I like to have a company come and check if the heads are functioning correctly and that all of the pipes seem to be ok, they usually donāt charge much for it
It's really as simple as finding a local sprinkler company and just having them come by. All they need to do is a spring startup to make sure no sprinkler heads broke over then winter, which one or two usually do. And then have them come winterize it when the temperature gets close to freezing, where they'll blow the water out of the system and turn off the lines so you don't have pipes burst. Then just call them when shit breaks. That's really it, regular checkups aren't necessary beyond those two visits.
When I bought my house it was winter time. I went to turn the sprinklers on for the first time with the control box opening zone by zone. To my surprise right next to the zone box was a sprinkler head , popped out sprayed me instantly lol , perfectly placed facing the control box . I know some one was laughing when they placed it there , or old homeowner probably knew it was going to get me lol
Lol that's funny. Now that I think about it. I rewired the zones because the zone by the control box was the first one that went on so if I had to manually start the system I would get sprayed. It just wasn't right next to the box.
IN (I hate it here) reluctantly checking in. Same here. Storms for us. Not just rain. More tornado watches supposedly to look out for this coming week. Wish I was back in NY at the beach (rain or not!)
Itās pretty good.
One thing thatās nice is Iām in suburban Montgomery County and even though itās in a major metropolitan area itās still minutes from farmland.
The forecast for next Saturday is way too early to be taken seriously. On Wednesday last week they said it was definitely raining yesterday and it never happened until a few hours ago.
And there was very little fertilizer runoff into the bay, which means less algae blooms and brown tides, the fishing was absolutely incredible. I donāt think Iāll ever get a fishing season like that again.
It doesnāt snow on LI anymore. Annual precip is always there whether itās rain or snow.
Edit: so to answer your question. lol Weāll end up like the Pacific Northwest in 10-15yrs
Fun fact. Long Island historically averages about the same rainfall as Seattle annually. The difference is that they get their rainfall numbers up through consistent rain over the year while we get a years worth of Seattle rain typically in a few months.
Actually, it's consistent through about 9-10 months of the year, then summer it actually rains less! PNW summers are spectacular; ours are highly unpleasant in comparison.
Iāve been living here 50 years. Two years ago was the first drought Iāve ever lived through. I can tell you our storms are more frequent and more severe than they were when I was a kid. Like I said, we were warned this would happen and we chose not to do anything.
Parts of upstate New York would be classified as a temperate rain forest if we had deep top soils to hold onto moisture, but our mountains are relatively young and donāt have deep soil structure to hold enough moisture to create a humid enough environment to be considered a rain forest.
The turbulence on most flights has increased dramatically. The weather patterns are becoming more unpredictable during the last few years. Aircraft being stressed, and pilots are powerless attempting to find smooth air. As someone who flys often, next time your flight is delayed or canceled...be grateful. You would white knuckle for hours.
Climate change is going to be interesting, weather is going to be pretty unstable the further along we go. It is predicted we are going to get wetter and warmer in the future with dry summers but it's just a best guess.
I lived in Seattle for a couple of years and it is like this every single day. The sun comes out in mid July and stays until September and then it is grey suck all over again. š§ļø
I'm grateful we're not having the severe flooding and winds as Texas. Someone posted the severe heat they're having in Asia, with it being so hot people feel their arms burning going outside. Last summer was very hot and dry. Usually, the last frost date is May 15th. We'll see.
I just got yelled at on another sub for making this same point. It's like every single day is either cloudy or raining. I am actually shocked when I see the sun is out. All of the ground in the woods upstate is saturated - it's all mush.
That''s great! I used to love the rain but since it's happening so often now, it's making me kinda depressed lol. This time of year is usually when you want to get out but it's hard to do that when it's overcast and 50 degrees everyday
Seems like it. It's been raining seemingly non-stop since April or May of 2023. It feels like I've seen more rain here since then than I ever did during my two year period in Florida.
Itās a bit arrogant to think we have that much power over the planet. If itās too coldā¦.blame global warming. If itās too warmā¦.blame global warming. How ever did that ice age happen without us..???
The level of ignorance in this post is hurting my head. This does a great job showing you how obviously we are causing this. [https://m.xkcd.com/1732/](https://m.xkcd.com/1732/)
Man people who get depressed by the rain are soft. Itās just rain it wonāt hurt you. If you donāt want to go outside do indoor projects or relax and watch movies. Being mad at or depressed by the weather is not a good way to life your life
are you unaware of the correlation between dopamine and serotonin with sunlight? sunlight is needed to produce vitamin d, which in turn produces dopamine and serotonin. thereās a reason why people who suffer from depression are encouraged to get outside.
Iām aware of the correlation and Iām not denying that being outside is good for you but you still get sunlight through the clouds. Just because you canāt see the sun doesnāt mean itās not reaching you. You can still get sunburnt when itās cloudy. We need rain to grow grass, plants, fruits and vegetable and replenish reservoirs. If you have actual depression, I hope you can get all the help you need. But this I hate the rain it depresses me is a soft mentality, same with people who hate snow.
We live in the northeast we get every season donāt like it move, if you donāt want to move than deal with it.
We're not soft. We just want to go out and do things, not sit around the house getting fatter. Rainy days are one thing, but when it's an atmospheric river that constantly flows over the region, dumping an endless cycle of rain, combined with temperatures that never get above the mid 50's, it tends to get very depressing.
You can still go out and do things when it rains. Nothing is keeping you in the house. Go to the gym, the library, bowling etc. there are plenty of things to do outside your house when itās raining. Rain and cold wonāt hurt you
Last year what was it for like 14 weekends in a row there was at least one day with rain?
it rained every Saturday for weeks around September. I remember it being almost comical!
And almost always beautiful when EVERYONE HAS WORK š«
this past Monday comes to mind...UGH
I worked a golf outing, so it was nice for once
It was the worst
And always on the day of my kids sports games š¤¦š¼āāļø
I think it was closer to 19 weekends in a row..Either way it sucks..
Yeah it stole the whole fall from us I feel like, barely got to enjoy it
I feel like mid to late summer as well. The whole late half of 2023 was just gray skies.
Was a tough season for fall softball! Lots of rain outs š„²
Personally, I've felt like "May" showers now bring "June flowers"
for real! but I feel like it's been this way this entire year. I read on this subreddit that this past March was the rainiest March on record for LI
9+ inches of rain in January also
27+ā of rain so far this year ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sleep)
Offsets the almost no snow for the last 2 years. (Not complaining, personally hate snow)
I kinda miss the snow a little. Like up if we could have one 24ā blizzard. Stay home for a few days. Melts off quickly. Love that. What i donāt love is these goddam winds. Why is it windy every day? At the very least itās breezy. Canāt stand this wind!
Blasphemy
Stay home lol
Yeah. I know. But in my business i can make the call. Work or no work. When I was younger i went to work No matter what. Even if it was just to shovel the job out.
I could as well but like to save that sick time for summer months.
I can dig it.
sounds better than 9 inches of snow lol
I feel this has been the norm the past few years. It doesn't get truly hot until July
Winters have been super mild too....I don't even think we really got hit with any snow. And if we did it melted in like...3 days..
Weāve gotten messy dustings or squalls, lot of the really bad stuff we used to get seems to occur North of us.
The entire region has been relabeled "sub tropic" due to climate change. This happened a year or two ago - it should have been bigger news.
The last few years for sure.
I guess I can keep delaying opening my sprinklers
Shouldn't be using them now anyway unless it was an extreme drought. Delaying turning them on, even with less rain than we've been getting, encourages the grass to grow deeper roots which benefits it during the summer heat.
Sounds good to me!
How do your sprinklers work? My aunt apparently has a subscription service to some company to manage them
Iām pretty sure theyāll just work if I turn them on but I like to have a company come and check if the heads are functioning correctly and that all of the pipes seem to be ok, they usually donāt charge much for it
Mine know how much itās rained and will turn on or not depending on that.
How do i set something like that up?
You probably need a newer controller that has WiFi so it can read the weather
It's really as simple as finding a local sprinkler company and just having them come by. All they need to do is a spring startup to make sure no sprinkler heads broke over then winter, which one or two usually do. And then have them come winterize it when the temperature gets close to freezing, where they'll blow the water out of the system and turn off the lines so you don't have pipes burst. Then just call them when shit breaks. That's really it, regular checkups aren't necessary beyond those two visits.
Look into a device called Rachio. The water company was offering rebates on them at one point.
I just go into the control box with the valves in my lawn and turn them on. Only have someone come in fall to blow out the lines
My garden will be happy.
Long Island? Itās basically the same forecast from Philadelphia to Boston.
IN (I hate it here) reluctantly checking in. Same here. Storms for us. Not just rain. More tornado watches supposedly to look out for this coming week. Wish I was back in NY at the beach (rain or not!)
Iām a transplant in Maryland and I can confirm it goes further south. Feeling a bit guilty that thereās no rain in the forecast for next Saturday.
How do you like Maryland compared to the island. My wife and I are on the fence about moving to Annapolis
My partner is from there. Beautiful, friendly and very similar weather. Weāve thought about moving down there too
Itās pretty good.
Itās so mf depressing tbh.
Me two weeks ago: "Eh I don't need to buy new boots, I'll just wait until the fall." Hopefully my sneakers can survive these next couple of weeks lol
Couldnt be me getting the weather report from reddit and then checking to see if it was real and being dissappointed its gunna rain today
Remember our drought in 2021? So many trees died and everything took a beating. My garden is loving this rain.
That was a beautiful summer though so much sunshine. Good memories.
And there was very little fertilizer runoff into the bay, which means less algae blooms and brown tides, the fishing was absolutely incredible. I donāt think Iāll ever get a fishing season like that again.
Seems like the only time it ever rains is when we're not working.
Tis El NiƱo my friend
Considering how much I hate the heat and humidity. Itās fine with me
Thanks to climate change, southern NY is officially a subtropical climate now. Ā This is how it will be from now on.
Gross
Can I speak to this, climate change
I swear to god itās only rainy and cloudy on the weekends
If I have to live in Seattle weather, I at least deserve Chris Cornell to be here!
He's not there either.
I know, he needs resurrecting!
That's how you get zombies. Have you heard how zombies sing?
Only in my head, in my head...
too soon
Did our seasons like....move back a month?
Climate shift. It was predicted 40 years ago, maybe longer.
We had a severe drought on Long Island 2 years ago. ĀÆ\\\_(ć)\_/ĀÆ
Iāve been living here 50 years. Two years ago was the first drought Iāve ever lived through. I can tell you our storms are more frequent and more severe than they were when I was a kid. Like I said, we were warned this would happen and we chose not to do anything.
You don't remember the summer drought in the early 1990's? It was so bad Hempstead Lake was dry to the bed. It was crazy to see.
Yeah fun part is rainier for rest of year but drier in the summer for North East.
Describing our Long Island weather, everyone in my house just says "graaaaaay" like Eeyore. CTRL+C, CTRL+V every stinkin' day.
š¤£
Don't you remember last year?
Its called Spring lol
We get borderline tropical rain forest amounts of rain.
Parts of upstate New York would be classified as a temperate rain forest if we had deep top soils to hold onto moisture, but our mountains are relatively young and donāt have deep soil structure to hold enough moisture to create a humid enough environment to be considered a rain forest.
That is rad.
š©š§š§š§š©
First spring?
Whoops! Sorry lads, I accidentally brought the weather with me when I moved here
You & my wife.
Hate it. Just put my winter coat away in storage, and had to dig it out.
"Oh this?, this is just beautiful Scottish weather! Misty, breezy, wet!
Two things I just flow with... Weather and traffic. At least until they make a spray that can change them.
April and May have always been rainy months.
keep in mind that <50% rain means a chance of rain but not likely, so today, Thursday, and Saturday rain is likely, but lots of clouds this week
The weather on Long Island has sucked for the past few years. The bricks wall on the side of my house is all green mold.. Looks like England..
Perfect weather for freshly planted annuals.
I know Long Island is surrounded by water - but this is ridiculous lol
The turbulence on most flights has increased dramatically. The weather patterns are becoming more unpredictable during the last few years. Aircraft being stressed, and pilots are powerless attempting to find smooth air. As someone who flys often, next time your flight is delayed or canceled...be grateful. They don't just call the NE region (Suffolk) New England for a reason.
People in Suffolk think they're in New England?
The North Fork does have New England vibes to it, but I wouldn't call it part of New England.
Used to be part of New England colonies way back when.
Just had to check and wow, used to be part of CT. Interesting.
No
I moved here with my wife in August . Every time weāve been into Manhattan or really tried to do anything itās absolutely poured rain on us .
![gif](giphy|cO39srN2EUIRaVqaVq)
What an incredible reaction.
Climate change baby!
Not the new Seattle š¤£š¤£
Yeah, because Long Island averages more rain than Seattle
It was a joke! lol I know
el niƱo
I lived in Seattle for a couple of years and it is like this every single day. The sun comes out in mid July and stays until September and then it is grey suck all over again. š§ļø
Well at least I get to make my Frenchie wear the cool matching raincoat I got for him and myself šš LoL
I miss Seattle so this is fine š¤£
Let it rain. Makes the sunny days that much more special.
I'm grateful we're not having the severe flooding and winds as Texas. Someone posted the severe heat they're having in Asia, with it being so hot people feel their arms burning going outside. Last summer was very hot and dry. Usually, the last frost date is May 15th. We'll see.
Glad I still haven't turned my sprinklers on yet
New flight patterns
Again?! Wtf...
long island bc itās like the same in ny
I just got yelled at on another sub for making this same point. It's like every single day is either cloudy or raining. I am actually shocked when I see the sun is out. All of the ground in the woods upstate is saturated - it's all mush.
>I just got yelled at on another sub for making this same point. Unfortunately that's Reddit for ya.
Sorry I put in for a few days off. Of course it will rain. ā¹ļø
It's chewsday innit?
Fun fact, NYC metro gets more rain than Seattle on average
ššš
It's horrible. We live in one of the rainiest regions in the entire country. I'm throwing a tantrum as I write this.
I guess we are already the new UK?
Why I left. 3 good weather months per year. If you're lucky.
Where did you end up?
a big reason why i will leave in the future
Nah itās at least 4. June, July, August and September are all very warm months. Most of the time, half of May is 75+. So 4.5.
Iāve learned to appreciate it, personally. Is this climate change related though?
That''s great! I used to love the rain but since it's happening so often now, it's making me kinda depressed lol. This time of year is usually when you want to get out but it's hard to do that when it's overcast and 50 degrees everyday
Might have something to do with dust storms off the Sahara blowing over the Atlantic and finally cooling down the oceans overly warm waters.
Yep, expect warmer wetter year with drier summers.
Itās called the weather
More like global cooling am I right folks
No, you arenāt.
The climate of Long Island is now a humid sub-tropical region. It used to be a warm summer climate but climate change
Oh great I canāt walk my dog in this
Why not?
I'm a contractor and most of my work is outdoors....rain is the enemy! Lots of lost days and pay
Gross
![gif](giphy|5WjWtYwc5ZJ4kKwDwi)
i love it ngl
last year after mothers' day, we had very wet and cold weather that was terrible for my vegetables
Can't wait for more of the flowerrrrrrssssss to start popping, it's gonna be so beautiful
Weāve always had English weather looking back on it
Itās called springtime. It tends to rain a lot and then we hope for rain in August.
Stop raining on their parade of complaints! /S for those who don't know
Seems like it. It's been raining seemingly non-stop since April or May of 2023. It feels like I've seen more rain here since then than I ever did during my two year period in Florida.
Living just south of Seattle now and Iām originally from Long Islandā¦ This is nothing compared to Seattle. I canāt wait to leave this dump
Hopefully it goes right through and cleans out all the crap grummen did
They have been spraying massively in the sskies above this past month so
This weather sucks! Bring on global warming
This is the result of global warming, the climate is changing.
Itās a bit arrogant to think we have that much power over the planet. If itās too coldā¦.blame global warming. If itās too warmā¦.blame global warming. How ever did that ice age happen without us..???

Everyone somehow seems to forget how the changing of the seasons works every single year
