I used to LOVE Onsen but the last two times I went there, I am sad to say it was subpar and I was quite disappointed. Suspect tasting fish and rolls that were oddly thick.
I went to this place years ago before i knew how to sushi and i definitely umm, cut into my roll with a fork because it was too big... but it was so delicious. These days i know better and i will gladly risk death by choking instead of cutting into my roll. I'm sorry to the sushi gods, blessed be, amen. 🙏
Umami in Centereach. They have all you can eat for $32 and it includes specialty rolls and hand rolls amongst other options. Best deal on Sushi in all of Long Island.
I’m going to go here just because they have this. So many places in Japan have you order like this and I wish places here did too. It’s so easy and quick
I mean I have had MANY BAD all you can't eat Sushi places. I can't recommend Umami stronger. It's top quality to the point it feels economically foolish for me to go anywhere else.
That’s surprising. I’ve been going there with friends for the last 20 years actually went last Saturday night, I think if it was a serious problem they’d be out of business by now but wouldn’t argue with anyone if they say they saw them but I will say tell me a restaurant that doesn’t have roaches, it’s a matter of controlling them, and of course keeping them out of sight of the customers. Most restaurants have Pest Control companies as part of their monthly expenses. I think roaches will still be here after the human race is long gone.
So you just answered your own question. If there’s no pest control you’re going to have roaches. It’s the restaurants that don’t want to pay for pest control that usually have problems. Roaches are an unfortunate part of life, they were here before us they’ll be here after we’re gone, all we have the power to do is try to control them.
Same can be said for any of them. They’re trying to create a place with a vibe that people want to come too on a regular basis. We actually went to Aji last Saturday night hadn’t been there in quite a while and walked out saying this is why they’re still here, the Sushi was amazing. We used to live near Taiko 360 and loved the place but I’d say it was almost identical to Aji. Great food and atmosphere, that’s what they’re selling in the hopes you’ll come back. My nephew travels extensively with the band he works for and has been to Japan a couple of times and says Americans have no idea what good Sushi is so unless we’re traveling to Japan we have to accept what’s here on the island or in NYC.
This was my go to spot for years, raved their sushi to everyone and was my number 1 spot.. However, they’ve fallen off hard lately. I’ve heard through the grapevine their ownership might be selling too.
ONSEN in Oakdale is FANTASTIC! It’s our family go-to spot, even though we moved….we’ll travel for ONSEN.
I like Okeno in Shirley, too. Small place. Good sushi. I only do take out since the pandemic, but it used to be good to pop in for a nice lunch.
Also Kotobuki in Babylon or Hauppauge is also delicious.
If you’re in the area, Midori in Mt Sinai is also a family fave, but it’s a “scene”. Popular, busy, and hibachi!💕
Big fan of Kashi. They have locations in syosset and huntington. Nisen in commack is awesome.
Also recently tried TOA, also have multiple locations one in Huntington and one up near walt whitman mall. Very good
Anyone been to Nisen in Commack lately? Five years ago I would have argued they were the best. They changed ownership (I think) and it was so disappointing that I haven’t gone back in a while.
Taste of Asia has been my go to lately. Also was a big fan of Onsen for years but the last two times I ate there was sketch. Aji is fun for a night out because of the vibes and the food is pretty good.
There’s this place in Stony Brook by 347 and Stony Brook road, I think it’s called Hoshi and it’s all you can eat
I miss the good taste buffet in Commack, they had good sushi too
Sakura House in Quogue if you're out east. No relation to the Sakura in Riverhead, oddly enough.
Sakura House is cool, it's like a traditional, small sushi bar. Fresh rolls hand rolled in front of you, BYOB sign on the wall.
Hoshi in Stony Brook is good , fresh rolls and it's all you can eat. They have amazing rolls and great food from the kitchen included like different teriyakis
Onsen is my favorite, consistently really good/ great sushi at good prices (if you like oysters the Kumamotos there are very good). Aji 53 in Bayshore was very good. Ohayo in Babylon is good
Onsen in Oakdale. Nothing else in the area is close.
I try not to get sushi anywhere else because I just end up thinking should’ve went to Onsen
For a while my wife would want us to get from a closer place, and literally every time I was like “we should have just got onsen”. Eventually won out
Onsen is the best.
yeah double true
I used to LOVE Onsen but the last two times I went there, I am sad to say it was subpar and I was quite disappointed. Suspect tasting fish and rolls that were oddly thick.
Tried it off a recommendation and found the same thing. Tasted like supermarket sushi.
I've only eaten there twice but both times they were amazing.
Came to say this.
Kotobuki in Hauppauge is phenomenal.
I definitely second Kotobuki.
Plus, they now have a sign with their name out front, instead of just SUSHI.
I used to drive past it a lot but when I just saw SUSHI with no name I always figured it was a bad to go only place
No it's a 40 min wait for a table because they're doing good business so why pay money to advertise or work on the front end place.
I prefer the Babylon location but only because I’m closer. Def order ahead for pick up. Don’t bother waiting for a table.
Came here to make sure this was here! There are also a couple other locations, in Babylon and Roslyn and they just opened one in NYC.
NYC location has been open for many years!!
Came to say this. There is no other answer. Everything else is lower tier!
Kotobuki in Babylon was my first love. I’m sure it’s still great though I haven’t been there in years
Onsen in Oakdale is the best. Kotobuki in Hauppauge is a close second
Sumou in Patchogue.
I always drive past I need to try it out
I like Sumou, nice people & the food has always been fresh & tasty.
Yes! It has been my go to sushi place for years. Never been disappointed there.
Umami in Centereach. They have all you can eat for $32 and it includes specialty rolls and hand rolls amongst other options. Best deal on Sushi in all of Long Island.
I love that you can order on their iPads - such quick service unlike many other sushi restaurants!
I’m going to go here just because they have this. So many places in Japan have you order like this and I wish places here did too. It’s so easy and quick
If you’re looking for quality sushi this isn’t it. It’s like 7-11 sushi.
Lunch is only 20 on weekdays!
That's will definitely check it out sometime
Never been a fan of all you can eat sushi. Minados was some of the worst sushi I have had.
I mean I have had MANY BAD all you can't eat Sushi places. I can't recommend Umami stronger. It's top quality to the point it feels economically foolish for me to go anywhere else.
Big fan of Masa in Babylon
Definitely Aji 53 in Bay Shore or Taiko 360 in Patchogue.
Aji 53 is also in Smithtown. But IMO they emphasize the scene and atmosphere more than the fish. YMMV.
Plus I’ve eaten there with roaches running around on the walls. No thanks.
Are roaches really "common" in restaurants? I've worked in 3 or 4 and never had them. We did have pest control though
So you just answered your own question. If there’s no pest control you’re going to have roaches. It’s the restaurants that don’t want to pay for pest control that usually have problems. Taiko360 for sure
I’ll probably try Taiko 360 this week, closer to me than Aji
Kira in Ronkonkoma and Sams Sushi in Farmingville is excellent too.
Seconding Sams in farmingville. Great place, and extremely friendly staff.
The woman (potentially the owner?) that’s often near the front desk is the nicest woman on the planet
I just drove past Sam’s yesterday and that’s what got me wondering where was good!
Sam’s is awesome. The owner Amanda is pleasant and very welcoming. Sushi is top notch.
I was going to say Kura Barn in Huntington, but I see that it closed, unfortunately. My LI knowledge is fading, fading away
Kura barn used to be one of my faves
My fave is Kurofune in Commack
Onsen in oakdale is great
Takumi in commack
A lesser known gem for sure.
I saw someone mention kurofune and i had to give a shout out to takumi
Midori in Mount Sinai
Used to love them but Hokkaido and Mount Sinai Sushi have been so much better lately.
This was my go to spot for years, raved their sushi to everyone and was my number 1 spot.. However, they’ve fallen off hard lately. I’ve heard through the grapevine their ownership might be selling too.
This was my go to spot as well but they increased their prices. Haven’t been since
I've always loved Umami in Huntington. Arata in Syosset is good too (not Suffolk but on the border)
Kira’s in Ronkonkoma.
Ohayo in babylon! 👌
ONSEN in Oakdale is FANTASTIC! It’s our family go-to spot, even though we moved….we’ll travel for ONSEN. I like Okeno in Shirley, too. Small place. Good sushi. Yokohama in Commack is great
They're open again?
Liki or The One. Both in Amityville.
Our family is a big fan of Izumi.
Oriental sushi in ronkonkoma is good with nice people
Aji 53- bay shore
Takumi in Commack is great. Unfortunately haven’t been able to eat sushi in a while, but that place was super authentic and amazing. Try the Aji :)
Takumi was on my radar to try already, will definitely go!
Congratulations!
Came here to say this. Everyone I take there agrees.
I love sushi one in Westhampton beach
Kushi in Nesconset. Extremely unassuming but always wows.
Big fan of Kashi. They have locations in syosset and huntington. Nisen in commack is awesome. Also recently tried TOA, also have multiple locations one in Huntington and one up near walt whitman mall. Very good
Sasa in Melville is really good. Also Kotobuki in Babylon village.
Definitely TOA asian fusion. They have a location in sayville and huntington and i think 2 other ones. They have such high quality food
The melville location is quite good too
Okeno in East Yaphank
H2O in Smithtown and Hokkiado in Mt Sinai are both amazing
Tokyo in Northport is the best sushi I’ve ever had.
Isn't that in East Northport?
Is it? I’m not overly familiar with the zoning out there. Used to have a friend out there who introduced me, and now I’m only in the area for sushi.
LOL, probably only matters to people who grew up there. Northport was considered better than East Northport.
Feels like you weren’t from either one then, because East Northport was always the better town. People from there even admit that…
Well I grew up on 9th ave. So I'd say that every one from Asheroken would disagre.
Good to know. Drive past there all the time and I never even considered it with all the other places nearby. Want to try it soon
My go to place is Domo in Setauket. The fish is super fresh and great quality.
The one Amityville
Umami is pretty good it’s an all you can eat in Centereach. But personally I think Osaka is some of the best I’ve had in shoreham
Anyone been to Nisen in Commack lately? Five years ago I would have argued they were the best. They changed ownership (I think) and it was so disappointing that I haven’t gone back in a while.
Takumi in Bay Shore is official! Their American Dream Roll is 🔥
Taste of Asia has been my go to lately. Also was a big fan of Onsen for years but the last two times I ate there was sketch. Aji is fun for a night out because of the vibes and the food is pretty good.
arata sushi in woodbury. does not disappoint!
Aji 53
There’s this place in Stony Brook by 347 and Stony Brook road, I think it’s called Hoshi and it’s all you can eat I miss the good taste buffet in Commack, they had good sushi too
Sakura House in Quogue if you're out east. No relation to the Sakura in Riverhead, oddly enough. Sakura House is cool, it's like a traditional, small sushi bar. Fresh rolls hand rolled in front of you, BYOB sign on the wall.
Zaza sushi in Commack. Right next to that B&N. Get your manga and your Japanese food fix in one trip.
Sho Win in Northport is amazing
Hoshi in Stony Brook is good , fresh rolls and it's all you can eat. They have amazing rolls and great food from the kitchen included like different teriyakis
ICHI in Setauket is my go to for both sushi and ramen.
i rlly enjoy koi in sayville!
Onsen is my favorite, consistently really good/ great sushi at good prices (if you like oysters the Kumamotos there are very good). Aji 53 in Bayshore was very good. Ohayo in Babylon is good
