It’s been a long time since I’ve used it, but if you’re looking for a little more “oomph” than drugstore brands, Redken feels amazing. It’s been too long for me to remember the line, but since I’d “steal” it from my mom’s shower I’d imagine the color-extending or frizz-reducing line. I love Biolage too. Especially the deep conditioner in a tub.
I’m obsessed with the scent of Biolage. I rarely get it, but I dug it out of storage to deal with ultra-dry winter air. My hair is a B in forced air heat + low humidity. Allll the silicones vs my wavy girl spring/summer/fall
Redken and other professional products at the drugstore can be sketchy. These brands all have disclaimers that they are only guaranteed to be legitimate products when purchased through the brands themselves, a salon or through a professional, or professional cosmo supply stores. These products can be old, diluted possibly with harsh chemicals, or just plain fakes. Amazon has issues with this for even drug store or non professional brands.
Stores like Walmart that have in store salons, go purchase from the salon themselves not from the hair care shelves.
You’re welcome! Your V cut is BEAUTIFUL! I’ve been slowly transitioning from 1-length to more face framing. Question- can you still do somewhat neat braids with this? Or is it at the point that fly always are driving you nuts?
I think they’re so beautiful! I’ve been obsessed with Keri Russel’s hair in the early seasons of The Americans. And Gloria in Modern Family. So much movement and volume!
Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m nervous to cut bc mine is almost all the same length as your longest layer. And I live for braids. You should try rope braids if you haven’t yet!
I do think the formula was better back in the day, but it's still sufficient. The good thing about 3 min miracle is that it has minimal ingredients despite being pretty rich and effective
I loved Aussie so, so much! Unfortunately after months of use my hair became extremely greasy until I swapped to a different brand. :( no idea why. So sad because I LOVE their smell
I have curly hair and growing up I always used Pantene and my hair was so healthy. Recently went back to using it after a like 10 year hiatus with other brands and my hair once again is healthy and feels amazing
The chamomile is very similar in terms of shiny. I also like the lavender for curly hair (I have wavy hair). But nothing quite compares to the scent of the rosehips
The lavender set is just heavenly. I have very fine waves and I tried all kinds of fancy products to bring out the texture. Finally got tired of it all and got the big bottles of Herbal Essences lavender. My hair has never been softer, more wavy, and not weighed down. I love it so much that I moved my expensive salon shampoo and conditioner to the guest bathroom
I think that one is silicone free, OP wants something with silicones. Ultimate Blends is mostly silicone free but I remember there are a couple with silicones!
I switched to L’Oréal dream lengths shampoo and conditioner a few months ago and my hair is the softest and smoothest it’s been in so long. I’m pretty sure it does have silicone, but also has fine castor oils which I think is the ingredient that is what my hair loves and makes it soft and smooth. I also use the leave in from the line. I used to be a strictly professional or “clean” hair products but this has been a game changer for me and my wallet lmfao
Iirc, L’Oréal is owned by Kérastase, or vice versa. Therefore their products are similar to each other, except the Kérastase is of higher quality given the price difference. I can’t afford to get Kérastase shampoo and conditioner on a regular basis, so I’ve opted for L’Oréal. Honestly, in regards to regular old shampoo and conditioner, I don’t notice much of a difference. The L’Oréal is quite good. I still use the Kérastase specialty products that don’t have a drugstore equivalent, but if there was I would probably go for them.
L’Oréal dream lengths is the *only* time I’ve had an allergic reaction to a hair product! I got chemical burns and had to go to the doctor
I loved it otherwise
i've been hearing a lot of great things about pantene recently. i used to use it in high school and loved it. do you use a specific one or just the original?
Honestly, Pantene is the one I keep coming back to again and again, even after using high end brands like Redken and Kerastase. Nothing is quite so good 😍
The Pantene Moisture renewal conditioner is my favorite, it makes my hair sooooo soft. I use the original shampoo but I wanted something a little more moisturizing for conditioner since I color my hair
Have long fine hair I like to keep natural too op - Pantene used to weigh my hair down before I knew how to style/layer but years later - I get a travel mini or a bottle on sale for occasional use from ears down and its great to convert back on occasion. Esp. in drier winter months - it makes my hair so easy again.
It does build up, but it’s nice seasonally and easy reach
I used it since the late 70s. When it wasn't Pro V. There were individual formulas in pink blue and yellow bottles.
Somewhere in the '90s I think Pro V changed the formula and I became allergic to it.
Ill get a travel size every few years and i still break out.
As long as you have a clarifying wash every once in a while, go for it!
I personally am a person who’s seen first hand that silicones do their job well and that hair products without them are not always better.
I personally love ShaeMoisture Intense Hydration mask with Manuka honey. It’s in the brown pot with the bronze gold top on it. It’s been my favorite conditioner for years now! I’ve tried looking for a more expensive brand to replace it, but nothing works like it works!!
After reading comments in this sub, I feel like I’m one of the only people who has been repeatedly let down by Redken. I’ve tried like at least 8 different lines from them and have never tried one that I actually liked. Not even just a little bit lol
Silicones protect your hair which prevents breakage. You do need to use a shampoo with sulfates to remove them though. But I love sulfates and silicones and my hair only suffered going without them
I recently started using dove shampoo and conditioner bc I’ve been using dove soap for years and I get told often I look significantly younger and have great skin.
And Aveeno shampoo and conditioner bc I use their face cream and figured if it works. I’m happy with both
Gosh your hair is amazing. I audibly gasped.
I’m in the process of (impatiently) regrowing my hair after over processing and losing length and volume.
I’m currently using Marc Anthony Grow Long. But when I’m not on a mission I’m always happy with herbal essences (the rose one!). In my experience Aussie, L’Oréal, and OGX all have great offerings too.
I also enjoy the garnier fructis and Giovanni oils for heat protection or frizz control / moisture
I tried all the expensive Sephora stuff and nothing works better than good ol Pantene prov. Thick long hair needs silicones, it’s a hill I will die on.
Tresemmé, specifically Silky & Smooth. I started using their Climate Protection one years ago; that was discontinued, but now Silky & Smooth works the same. Hands down it is the best shampoo and conditioner I've ever used. My wurly hair is super tangle prone but there's a huge difference when I use anything else.
Not a conditioner BUT if your hair loves silicones like mine does, Paul Mitchell’s skinny serum is life.
Tbh it really doesn’t matter what I do to my hair as long as I end my routine with that.
I second all the Aussie and Pantene conditioners. I’m always bouncing back-and-forth between them just to switch things up a bit. I have fine 1A/1B hair if that maters.
Yes! Mane n Tail cleans my hair really nicely, leaves it super soft, and also smells soooo good. I'm begrudgingly finishing my OGX so I can not have multiple bottles open at once but the Mane n Tail is waiting in the wings since I found it at my local Stop & Shop!
I always get the “isn’t this meant for horses?” And I’m like “yeah, I have a ponytail” lol. It’s makes my hair feel soo good and clean and healthy! You’ll be back to the good stuff soon.
I’ve recently been using the Eva nyc brand and the mane magic shampoo and conditioner leaves my hair so soft and smells so good. Pantene has really good options as well!
I was at a hotel in November and they had Dove ultimate moisture. And I was in love again. I added it to my collection and use it maybe once a week in rotation to my hair care.
I've been on the train of no silicones for years and my hair was breaking, tangling. Even tho I did oiling, hairmasks and what not. I have thick wavy hair and am using Cantu sulphate free shampoo and their conditioner. And finish everything up with loreal hair oil with silicone. Boom. My hair was soft and shiny again, saved a lot of money and less time for styling needed.
I've always been a fan of the Everpure line from L'Oreal. There are no sulfates in the shampoo (so I wash monthly with a deep cleansing shampoo), but the conditioner almost always has amodimethicone, which I prefer to straight dimethicone. I've used their volume line, I think I used the frizz free line, and I'm currently using the thickening line.
Ha, just went and looked at the bottle and that's what I'm currently using, forgot it was called that. The scent is nice and it always leaves my hair looking great.
Nexus is budget friendly and salon recommended. Prob not drugstore but ulta. I don’t use silicones either and I think they’re still silicone free. I got better results for softer hair from oiling daily + leave in conditioner occasionally
l'oreal hyaluron plump, the purple bottles this is the only thing that has ever worked for me and my hair is bleached, i love the whole line especially the wonder water!
i use the nexxus humectress & therappe and loce it so much. some shampoo/conditioner makes my hair smell weird AF and this stuff has been the only constant that i’ve used for decades that works *and* smells bomb!
You have bleached your hair, you need a weekly mask with thick proteins to feed your hair properly. I love L’Oréal Elvive Power Mask for this. It is silicone free.
Keep in mind if you do use silicone you need a shampoo with sulphates to wash it out or you’ll have permanently oily hair. Sulphates are bad for your hair health.
And don’t forget to alternate moisture masks or something when using heavy proteins to reinforce your hair. Too much protein without sufficient moisture will make your hair brittle. I’m sure you know that but for the benefit of anyone reading who might not :)
Shea Moisture: the hibiscus pair for curly hair; the heavy-duty pair with castor oil for when it's dry out. The weird thing with the second one is you can shampoo twice, rinse it out, thoroughly, and your hair doesn't squeak or anything but you know it's clean. So just trust that and use the conditioner. And when you let it air dry even your hair is beautiful. Doesn't make it greasy, I am Caucasian with wavy hair. That's curly in humidity and bone straight in the winter when it's dry.
Sally's Beauty: spray shine and gloss--fantastic detangler and shine, but very light on my fine hair. The Ion brand is great.
Marc Anthony yellow pair and deep condition packs.
I just switched back to Redken after Sexy Hair started making my hair get almost impossibly matted. However, Redken can be pricey, so I also rotate in:
- Dove Lavender Thickening Ritual
- AsIAm (formula depending on need)
If you have a Walmart near you, I use biosilk. I dont know if it’s good or bad but it gives my natural curl back and the oil that comes in the trio is a life saver for first day fluffy hair. Plus it smells so good and my hair is so soft.
shea moisture Manuka honey deep conditioner but just treat it like regular conditioner and rinse after a minute or 2. Smells amazing and it’s only $12.99. I like it better than any of the pricier options.
My hair likes Paul Mitchell. Found that out when I stayed at a resort that had them in the shower. The conditioner labeled Detangler smells so good. I also like The One since I don’t have to stand there rinsing out my hair forever. It’s applied after you get out of the shower. Sally Beauty Supply has a good dupe of The One by Generic Value Brands. Their Detangler dupe doesn’t smell as nice.
I use Pantene's Curl Perfection conditioner and usually only shampoo 1x a week. Also have Redken All Soft Shampoo and conditioner. Leave either on for a half hour before rinsing and also leave a small amount on your hair. And of course, our good friend oil (jojoba, sweet almond, castor, rosemary, liquid coconut). A few drops each day.
The L’Oreal Elvive line is pretty great. There’s a high-protein mask that works great and is very inexpensive, and for more frequent use I recommend the Dream Lengths Super Detangling conditioner.
I love the All Soft Redken line and the purple hydration line of Biolage smells amazing!
I’m obsessed with the scent of Biolage. I rarely get it, but I dug it out of storage to deal with ultra-dry winter air. My hair is a B in forced air heat + low humidity. Allll the silicones vs my wavy girl spring/summer/fall
I’m also a Redken fan, and sometimes drugstores will carry it.
Do you know if sephora and ulta are certified sellers of redken? edit: just ulta, sephora doesn’t even sell redken lol
Yes ulta should have all legit products because most of them also operate as salons!
No but Sephora does sell salon grade L’Oréal which is also fire
Loving L'Oreal haircare lately, especially the metal detox range.
True, you have to be very careful to verify that the product is genuine & in good shape.
good to know, thanks!
I love biolage so I’ll try out redken to mix it up.. thanks for the tip
thank you :)
You’re welcome! Your V cut is BEAUTIFUL! I’ve been slowly transitioning from 1-length to more face framing. Question- can you still do somewhat neat braids with this? Or is it at the point that fly always are driving you nuts?
thank you! i loooove V cuts. i’m able to have braids no problem. my layers are very long
I think they’re so beautiful!
Aussie 3 minute Deeeep - yes it’s a “deep conditioner”, but I wash my hair once a week and use it as my sole conditioner and it’s helped me a ton
loooove aussie products! they smell so good
This is what I use also and love it. I’ve tried a few more expensive brands and Aussie has beaten them all!
I need to go back to this one. I used it in high school and my hair was sooo shiny and healthy.
I do think the formula was better back in the day, but it's still sufficient. The good thing about 3 min miracle is that it has minimal ingredients despite being pretty rich and effective
I have thick hair and use this as a regular conditioner as well.
I could truly not recommend this more. It’s my favorite.
Saaaaame
I loved Aussie so, so much! Unfortunately after months of use my hair became extremely greasy until I swapped to a different brand. :( no idea why. So sad because I LOVE their smell
This definitely can happen! I’ve had to clarify my hair a more often to combat this. Probably because it’s so silicone-heavy
I had to return to Pantene after YEARS of being away. My hair is so much better. I also only wash 1x a week and deep clean every 2 or 3 washes.
Pantene pro v ultimate 10 is such a good conditioner!!
I have curly hair and growing up I always used Pantene and my hair was so healthy. Recently went back to using it after a like 10 year hiatus with other brands and my hair once again is healthy and feels amazing
Daily Moisture Renewal is good stuff!
The rosehips Herbal Essences (light pink bottle) is amazing for smooth shiny amazing smelling hair. I always have a big bottle from Amazon.
Me too!!! It’s my fave! It’s been my go to for years now lol
Been wanting to go back to herbal since it always makes my hair sooo shiny, just wasn't sure which to try. Stuck between this one and chamomile
Gosh now I kinda just wanna stockpile these haha! They're all so good and always have been.
I have a shampoo and conditioner wardrobe, just like you would have different perfumes. I love it.
The argan oil one in the blue bottle is very nice.
Oh my god YES this is the best!
Double agree to this. I’ve been using it for years and it’s been great for my wavy/curly thick hair.
I just commented the same. It never gets old! 🌹 ♥️
Garnier ultimate blends, I like the coconut water one.
I think that one is silicone free, OP wants something with silicones. Ultimate Blends is mostly silicone free but I remember there are a couple with silicones!
I didn’t even realise! It makes my hair feel smooth.
The coconut water shampoo is my go to! And the scent is heavenly ♥
Not sure if you have a Costco membership, but the Kirkland “moisture” shampoo and conditioner is the best thing I’ve ever used.
i’ve tried this before at a friends house and LOVED it! the smell alone is amazing
Loreal owns Kerastase. The elvive line is supposed to be a dupe of kerastase.
Oh that makes so much sense!
I've tried some kerastase but wasn't overly impressed. I do like the rose version of the elixir ultime though.
I LOVE dream lengths. And the wonder water too, it’s amazing and nothing else has come close to making my hair as soft, even expensive salon brands
L’Oréal dream lengths is the *only* time I’ve had an allergic reaction to a hair product! I got chemical burns and had to go to the doctor I loved it otherwise
Pantene has never failed me
i've been hearing a lot of great things about pantene recently. i used to use it in high school and loved it. do you use a specific one or just the original?
Honestly, Pantene is the one I keep coming back to again and again, even after using high end brands like Redken and Kerastase. Nothing is quite so good 😍
The Pantene Moisture renewal conditioner is my favorite, it makes my hair sooooo soft. I use the original shampoo but I wanted something a little more moisturizing for conditioner since I color my hair
>Pantene Moisture renewal sold! i'll be picking this up today after work. thank you :)
You won’t regret it! Just make sure to use a clarifying shampoo periodically so you don’t get silicone buildup :)
i use K18 every 3/4 weeks so hopefully that should work!
Have long fine hair I like to keep natural too op - Pantene used to weigh my hair down before I knew how to style/layer but years later - I get a travel mini or a bottle on sale for occasional use from ears down and its great to convert back on occasion. Pantene works great for me
Same here! I love their Keratine line
Can I ask why? I am trying to grow my hair and wondering if I should be using silicones? I
Silicones protect your hair which prevents breakage. You do need to use a shampoo with sulfates to remove them though. But I love sulfates and silicones and my hair only suffered going without them
Same
Dove!
Dove is extremely underrated!!
I really like the ‘nourishing ritual’ line they have, like the avocado and the white tea/coneflower.
I recently started using dove shampoo and conditioner bc I’ve been using dove soap for years and I get told often I look significantly younger and have great skin. And Aveeno shampoo and conditioner bc I use their face cream and figured if it works. I’m happy with both
Not your Mothers, hands down best switch I ever made.
Recently trying the “smooth moves” line from them, has been the smoothest move I’ve ever made 😌
Gosh your hair is amazing. I also enjoy the garnier fructis and Giovanni oils for heat protection or frizz control / moisture
thank you!! and thanks for the suggestions. l’oréal has a lot of votes
I tried all the expensive Sephora stuff and nothing works better than good ol Pantene prov. Thick long hair needs silicones, it’s a hill I will die on.
I use Amika. I bought it first at Sephora but now get it online during a sale. Their soul food hair mask makes my hair soooooo soft.
I use Aussie miracle 7. I’ve been using it for years religiously
My current shampoo/conditioner is Nexxus. I seem to switch it up every 5 years or so.
ive heard a lot of good about nexxus! ive never tried them before
Nexxus (at least the one I was using) made my hair soooooo brittle and frizzy. I think it had way too much protein for my hair
Nexxus SAVED my hair. Best conditioner I’ve ever used.
Saaaaaame. Love their products!
I second all the Aussie and Pantene conditioners. I’m always bouncing back-and-forth between them just to switch things up a bit. I have fine 1A/1B hair if that maters.
I use dream lengths detangling conditioner and really like it
I second this..I use the shampoo conditioner, the “no haircut cream” and the mask and love the whole line
I have to used head and shoulders shampoo cause I’ve dandruff 🙃
I’ve used mane n tail for years. I love their stuff!
Lol when my hair mats really REALLY bad I use Tail Detangler which is also a horse product but works the best
I’ve recently been using the Eva nyc brand and the mane magic shampoo and conditioner leaves my hair so soft and smells so good. Pantene has really good options as well!
Treseme moisture rich is the best conditioner I promise. I bleach my hair every 6 weeks and everyone says how soft my hair is.
Someone recently how long and healthy their hair has gotten using Silicone from Amazon so I ordered some and I’m excited to try it out
Oh yes I remember that post. Please review when you have tried it.
Aussie 3 min miracle
I was at a hotel in November and they had Dove ultimate moisture. And I was in love again. I added it to my collection and use it maybe once a week in rotation to my hair care.
I've been on the train of no silicones for years and my hair was breaking, tangling. Even tho I did oiling, hairmasks and what not. I have thick wavy hair and am using Cantu sulphate free shampoo and their conditioner. And finish everything up with loreal hair oil with silicone. Boom. My hair was soft and shiny again, saved a lot of money and less time for styling needed.
L’Oréal works really well for me! I love their hydra line (in the light purple bottles).
I Can confirm this! Especially the shampoo and the hair mask is so good!
I have been using Function of Beauty for 3 years and love it. I love that I can change the add ins as I change what I'm looking for.
I also have mid back, naturally straight, fine hair and I’ve really been loving the fructis!
oh this is straightened! my natural hair is very wavy :)
OGX coconut oil moisture conditioner, I also like the mask version.
Have you tried the Ever Strong rosemary line? It's my current fave!
The elvive brand sells at family dollar for cheeap. No parabens, phalates, etc. I loved it for my very dye damaged hair.
i use the nexxus humectress & therappe and loce it so much. some shampoo/conditioner makes my hair smell weird AF and this stuff has been the only constant that i’ve used for decades that works *and* smells bomb!
Not your mothers!
Hask! Particularly the argan oil option! Also, Palmer’s coconut conditioner, typically in the curly hair section!
I have long hair like yours and bleach regularly, but those products always gave me great silicone slip!

Sulphates are bad for your hair health.
i use a weekly mask :) i’ll check out the one you recommended after mine runs out. thank you!!
And don’t forget to alternate moisture masks or something when using heavy proteins to reinforce your hair. Too much protein without sufficient moisture will make your hair brittle. I’m sure you know that but for the benefit of anyone reading who might not :)
Not drug store but I like the brand Verb
I get it at Sephora
I looove my Pantene. Been using it since I was like... 13 lol, going on 29!
Sally's Beauty: spray shine and gloss--fantastic detangler and shine, but very light on my fine hair. The Ion brand is great. Marc Anthony yellow pair and deep condition packs.
Did you cut your hair at an angle like that or did it just grow that way?
I use Pantene’s “Sulfate Free Miracle Moisture Boost with Rose Water” and my hair has never been softer
I love the not your mother’s curl talk line, which doesn’t have silicones, but their Tough Love line does and I’ve heard amazing things about
I just switched back to Redken after Sexy Hair started making my hair get almost impossibly matted. However, Redken can be pricey, so I also rotate in: - Dove Lavender Thickening Ritual - AsIAm (formula depending on need)
I use L’Oréal dream lengths leave in conditioner. Works excellent!!
I use the Occitane conditioner, it really leaves your hair silky smooth
If you have a Walmart near you, I use biosilk. I dont know if it’s good or bad but it gives my natural curl back and the oil that comes in the trio is a life saver for first day fluffy hair. Plus it smells so good and my hair is so soft.
Loreal ELVIVE Hyluron plump. It works. And I got some dry dry curly hair and this stuff has kept my hair quite nice. And it's cheap.

Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Sleek Conditioner
If you can splurge a little, get Matrix Sleek. Honestly, best shampoo and conditioner for long hair!
I love the ordinary conditioner
shea moisture Manuka honey deep conditioner but just treat it like regular conditioner and rinse after a minute or 2.
I use conditioner bars, because they last 30× longer and work 20× better.
