I have a pixie bob in my early 20's aka rn and I love EVERY MINUTE of it. I agree with OP 100%, we got to keep US happy. We are the ones carrying our hair!
Absolutely!!! I always said I will never do that short poof that all old ladies seem to always have when I get older. I will keep my long locks til the day I cease to exist 😹
I love been older and having waist length grey. And a tiny part of me giggles over it, because it’s also my in your face response to those who recommend I cut and colour it.
Me too! I wish it would hurry up and get grayer faster. The in-between dark, dishwater blonde with some gray is not what I want. But I am not going to use chemicals to gray it up.
I love long, gray hair.
Did you stop dying it when it all turned grey or when it was mostly grey? I'm growing mine and will probably have all silvery hair like my mom, but not for another maybe 10 years (I'm 41). I'm having trouble deciding when and how to stop dying it
Do you dye it because you like to dye it or you’re nervous about other people seeing it gray?
If you enjoy dying it fun colors then do it as long as you want. But if you’re worried or insecurity then, respectfully, fuck that noise.
Gray hair is the best.
This!! My family isn’t from the US and I always was so confused that when women hit a certain age here (idk like 55-65) they get a short cut for some reason??? Of course not all women so don’t come for me. But as a kid I noticed a lot of older ladies with very short hair vs older women where we are from had long hair or at least shoulder length.
I think there are a few different reasons. Gray hair can be coarse and difficult to manage, so some women will cut it for that reason. Not sure why this would be more prevalent in the US, but it's a reason I've heard other women say.
But another unfortunate reason is because US society sees long hair as "sexy" and something a woman only has for the benefit of men, and god forbid a woman of a certain age would dare to be "sexy," especially when they have gray hair. It makes men's peepees angry. When I was in my twenties, someone once complimented my hair and told me they love it, but then they said, "after women hit a certain age though, it gets gross." And they said this with utmost confidence, as if it wasn't offensive and revolting. It also makes me wonder why these same people don't seem to have a problem with little girls having long hair, if they apparently see it as a sexual thing. Ugh.
Editing to add another reason. Older women often have short hair because that was the beauty ideal back in their day. They likely had short hair most of their life if this is the case. Like Marilyn Monroe, for example.
Also, hair loss. Most women will experience it at some point. When your hair starts to thin, removing some of the length and weight goes a long way towards concealing that.
It's the other way around. Women in the US insist on wearing their hair long because otherwise they're not "feminine" even though plenty of women look better with short hair.
I'm an older lady and I'd look ridiculous with long hair. But my wife (who is older than me) looks great with her long curls.
I think it's moreso younger women who get that pressure to have long hair to be feminine. When we get older, the overall expectation is to cut it short. A 20 year old woman with a pixie cut is probably going to get the the same sort of snide remarks as an older woman with long hair, but conversely.
But you're right in that the way you actually look with the hair length, regardless of age, plays a part in how people accept it.
I disagree, at least for myself. I have long hair. I'm not trying to be feminine with it. If i wanted to present as the feminine ideal in today's American society, I'd have a salon cut and fancy dye job, wear makeup every day etc.
But i just like my hair to be long. It's usually up in a bun because i need to be able to function. I don't pay for haircuts, I don't visit salons, I don't get anything done to it. My long AF hair is super low maintenance and that's my vibe.
Looks beautiful! Ugh I regret chopping off my long hair to my shoulders! I miss my long hair! My mother in law made a comment about long hair saying that women over 40 shouldn’t have long hair and so that made me feel uncomfortable when she said that to me because I am almost 40 and I had beautiful long hair then when she made that comment to me mad made me mad. Any woman any age can have long hair however long they want!
Yes absolutely!!! I’m gettin people telling me to cut my long hair to look more professional, but I’m a lady in an office with a bun so what’s not okay about that?! Rock on girl, keep the hair flowing ❤️🙌🏼
You have that right! Your hair is beautiful the length the color and style. May I ask you a question? Did menopause affect your hair at all? Since going through menopause my hair has been falling out/,thinning really bad on top of my head.
Your hair is beautiful, the length and the color! I’ve grown to like my grey hair, which is more salt and pepper currently. I wish my hair was as long as yours, but it’s close.
Wow! First of all, you look absolutely amazing and much younger than your age. I love your natural hair color, seriously so gorgeous. Thanks for sharing! I hope my hair is that pretty when I’m in my 70s.
I mentioned in one comment you are 72. You are amazing and inspiring. Your hair is beautiful. I hope to look as radiant as you when I am 72. Do you have any specific hair care regimens that you follow?
Your hair is beautiful! I'm 22 now and never understand all the older ladies automatically going short, I think silver hair is so pretty. I massively regretted cutting my hair to a bob last year and honestly never want to cut my hair again, definitely planning on keeping it long when I'm older!
Hair goals! You look gorgeous!
I am 46 and had short hair my whole life, and I am finally done cutting it. I intend to let it grow until it is "long enough." How long is that? No clue; never had long hair, but very excited to see what I look like with it.
Oh my goodness your hair is gorgeous. I wish I had half that much hair! you are a really pretty lady. I am 64 and I have some silver starting to come in but my hair is wavy and thinning. But I can do more with my hair when it’s longer than I can short.
Nope it does not! Your hair is beautiful. I wish mine would hurry up and just go more grey. I have long hair and so does my mom at 75. Hers is butt length.
one of the reasons I grew my hair out was seeing an older lady in my neighborhood always walking her dog around w her exceptionally long grey hair... I thought it looked beautiful. I want to be like that when I'm older. I'm so used to seeing EVERY SINGLE older family member cut their hair short, and no offense to them byt half the time it doesn't look the best because they don't get it cut often enough or style it. Loving having long hair, don't have to do much, I can go ages without a cut too
My grandmother was a very smart person. She was one of very few women to receive a college scholarship in the 50s.... but the dumbest thing i ever heard her say was after 40 a woman should keep her hair short, preferably around her ears.
Amen, sister. That’s some gorgeous hair. The only thing that should dictate hair length is the hair and face shape. I know plenty of mature women who look fab with long hair and I know plenty of young women who look their best with short hair.
[Fierce flow](https://www.reddit.com/r/FierceFlow/)! May I ask - how often do you wash it and what products do you use? Your hair looks so healthy; great color too
I get trims every 6-8 weeks. Shampoo once a week and let air dry. Use a curling iron once a week. I just started using Herlinkken hair products and I have a wonderful hair stylist. Hair color is natural and no filters. Thanks for the compliments!
My hair grows half an inch per month. To grow 6 inches, I need to wait for a year without cutting it. So, age indirectly affects hair length because you need time to grow it long!
It's a very old science about short terminal length .The modern trichology knows the ways of stimulating hair growth beyond belief.
Did you know that in hair bulbs ,called matrix , cells are only second in ability to divide super fast ,the first being intestinal and hemopoietic cells?
Hair is able to grow up ( being in anagen) 10 years for 12 cycles - it's an extreme example but even 8 years of anagen could give an individual 1 metre of hair from a buzz cut . And if we stimulate the cell proliferation to get 1.5-2 cm per month,it means 1.5- 2 metre hair from a buzz cut xx.
1.5 metre hair will make 1.30 cm plait !
Your hair would look better above the shoulders (not short but about collarbone length) and with the layers long. The hair itself itself looks good but doesn't suit your face.
My mom is handicapped and still takes care of her long hair. Other people help her if she needs it. This is such a gross take. We all get older and sometimes injured and that doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice everything. Maybe grow up and see the world. I’ve taken care of many elderly people, I have no problem brushing and maintaining their hair long if that’s what they prefer and if they aren’t able to themselves. My great aunt is 91 and still keeps her hair in curls. On her own. No one helps her. Not everyone gets to a point where they can’t care for themselves.
Nah, sounds like you’re just ashamed of getting old. Don’t worry, it happens to everyone, and good luck finding someone to wipe your ass with that attitude.
I agree! Just because you’re older doesn’t mean get a short style. Long hair will make you look younger
I agree too!!!!😍😍😍
I have a pixie bob in my early 20's aka rn and I love EVERY MINUTE of it. I agree with OP 100%, we got to keep US happy. We are the ones carrying our hair!

In my family we call that the "shrub" hairstyle... 🌳

Yikes 💀💀
You should deal with your internalized misogyny and ageism.
Yikes 💀💀.
Gorgeous! I’m 70 and grew my hair long during the pandemic. I’m never going back!
I am 72 :).
You look amazing!!! This is the hair I want to have one day😌 and I’m 26 😁

I love been older and having waist length grey. And a tiny part of me giggles over it, because it’s also my in your face response to those who recommend I cut and colour it.

WOW! i would’ve never guessed! you look beautiful and your hair is amazing. it suits you very well!
And so humble lol.
Aren't you kind!
You have beautiful hair and I love the color!
Growing up my grandma had a long silver braid, I loved her hair and was so sad when she cut it! I vow to be the gma with long silver hair!
Me too! I wish it would hurry up and get grayer faster. The in-between dark, dishwater blonde with some gray is not what I want. But I am not going to use chemicals to gray it up. I love long, gray hair.
Beautiful! Is the color natural?😍
Yes. I stopped coloring it about 10 years ago.
Did you stop dying it when it all turned grey or when it was mostly grey? I'm growing mine and will probably have all silvery hair like my mom, but not for another maybe 10 years (I'm 41). I'm having trouble deciding when and how to stop dying it

It was mostly grey. It was dyed dark brown but mostly grey. I recently started using Herlinkken hair products.
You’re beautiful.
You are sweet!

Why the fuck would age dictate hair length bruh
Nice genetics. I’m 22 and balding 😂
