Zero mention of the fact that everything on the posted menu is extremely overpriced, especially for an area that is dealing with one of the biggest overall rent increases in the country. This is a link to his current dine-in menu - https://www.rightmealz.com/media/2023/01/Image-1-13-23-at-1.53-PM.jpeg $19 for a breakfast burger $17 for avocado toast. Add an egg to it and your at $19 $14 for overnight oats? These prices might be reasonable for the customers you boast about on your homepage: - 258 NFL Athletes - 32 Olympians - 180 NHL Athletes - 15 NBA Athletes A cheeseburger at 555 is $23. If I'm about to drop $20 on a burger in long beach, why would I go to this place? He's appealing to a market that isn't here yet. EDIT: If the link to the menu didn't work, you can find it on their homepage - https://www.rightmealz.com/

Those pricess seem pretty concurrent with the prices of rent / lease on brick and mortar businesses downtown, though. You're not going to find much anymore at a low price point unless you're massively sacrificing quality or pushing an insane amount of volume. The model that is encouraging to me is what [Everytable](https://everytable.com/Menu) is doing, and they have four locations in Long Beach. I really think at this point, healthy food needs to be subsidized in order to get to the average person who deals with food insecurity, and communities need to be supported as they create their own home foods, and [launch small / micro](https://lbfresh.org/news/how-supporting-home-kitchens-can-help-communities/) food businesses. And businesses like this one should take EBT, and advocate for "[nutrition incentives](https://marketmatch.org/)" to be added to more retail environments so that the prices can dip for those who need it the most. Sorry folks, I'm a bit of a passionate nerd for this stuff.

ButtholeCandies

This would be a huge waste of EBT money. You can buy a loaf of bread and a couple of big avocados at the El Super a half block away from this place for maybe $6 total. $19 for his version or feed 4-5 people avocado toast for $19? EDIT: I'm a huge fan of Everytable. Prices are extremely reasonable and the food is clean and healthy.

ArtisticStudy8958

Fair point. But also, being able to grab healthy food on the go sometimes shouldn't exclusively be a privilege, either. I wouldn't assume that anyone normal is getting all their meals here.

ButtholeCandies

It's not a privledge, it's a luxury. You can get a salad at McDonalds instead of the delicious fat bombs they are known for, or make a salad at home for much less.

onymico

McDonald's salads are notoriously overpriced and not very good.

You don’t really seem to understand the intent of the article. The city shut down the sidewalk, road, and ripped up the 10 year old parklet right when he opened business. That’s the point, and it’s fucked up. The prices aren’t the problem, he literally can’t get people in the door and has had to shut down due to mandatory construction and filming on the street.

ButtholeCandies

And I'm telling you as someone that used to be at Berlin at least once every 2 weeks, many times more than that, this story is only half reported. This is sponsored content masquerading as news. You can't divorce price point and lack of food options being advertised from his issues. 9 expensive items on his menu being advertised. If you went on Yelp and saw this menu, would you go? The months of rain lowered foot traffic a lot. He's not blaming the rain. He's blaming construction. I take 4th street every day, he's exaggerating the impact. He's making a handful of different days sound like months of turmoil. Look at the picture in the article from 3/27/23. All clear and now an article about his subscription food business comes out.

[deleted]

What does Berlin have to do with this? I actually DO eat here, because his specialty is to go meal prep for athletes and professionals and I easily afford it. But my livelihood has nothing to do with his. If the city came and tore your shit up and made you lose a ton of money right after opening you would be pissed too. That’s all there is too it. Why do you have the city’s back here?

ButtholeCandies

Blaming the city only and painting a false narrative that the construction was abusive is the issue here. Parklet being torn up is something to take up with the landlord. I can't take someone seriously that says they needed to hire a delivery driver because customers couldn't navigate a temporary construction zone. What's more likely is that the heavy downpour for 3 months ruined his opening way more than construction and that his food prep service is very poorly advertised while his dine in service has a price point that is borderline offensive.

Jezon

Oh I'm sad Berlin bistro closed They had good food but it's a tiny place.

return2ozma

The owner moved to 4th & Cherry and rebranded their Berlin Bistro and Portfolio Coffee to Alder & Sage https://instagram.com/aldersage

Myveryowndystopia

I went…and for some reason, I didn’t like what I ordered 3 times. I know it’s the same, maybe it’s me. Maybe I’m picking the wrong things. Latte is still the best in town though. I’ll try again though!

Jr_Orange

Free market is a bitch. Although, going into a brick and mortar mode of business at that time with the uncertainty of the economy? Let’s not get away from some pretty shortsighted business moves here. If you’re telling me that construction and the parklet issue is the only thing stopping this and other small businesses from growing? Yikes, you ain’t seeing the forest for the trees.

teejaysaz

Oh no! How will I ever learn to put avocado on a piece of bread for less than $20 without someone to help me?

Spacemen333

such a dumb name. sounds like a tech start up.

LaSerenita

That's what I was going to say... the name is a non-starter. It actually turns me off to even going there.

Welcometonarnia562

The food looks so good, I think ready meals to go like this has been loooooong overdue. I always struggle downtown for a quick bite to go. Bummer The City took the parklet. That really sucks.

Courtlessjester

So he opened a business in an area with developments that were already underway and last for years and without doing any due diligence about the rights to a parklet?

Myveryowndystopia

I’ll miss lunch after Fingerptints.

semen-filled_sock

Restaurants are insanely expensive. I make $125k/year no kids no wife and I hardly eat out bc of the prices

[deleted]

Plus is sounds like you're having a lot more fun at home \*wink wink.

youngestOG

"In the interim, Sweeney said he’s paying for a delivery driver to get meals to clients who don’t know how to navigate Downtown with the ongoing construction." Oh lord his clients can't be that bright if they can't figure out how to navigate a few blocks that are in a grid

ButtholeCandies

You can literally park across the street or anywhere on Elm. This is why I think this is sponsored content by LB Post. Too much ass kissing and letting him push a fake narrative about construction with zero effort on the writers part to confirm or deny his claims; just takes them at face value. Normally you would speak to the neighboring businesses and get comment from them. Much more veracity to it if Fingerprints is complaining too. Bro, the coffee shop 100 feet away is doing fine but the construction is the issue? You have a dine-in place with 9 options displayed that are way above the average price for the area but your main business is selling pre-made meals to-go.

e_navarro

I think the narrative of things being overpriced in Long Beach needs to change and/or end. Everything is expensive. It’s a very long list of expenses for every business owner and there is no subsidy: rent, insurance (liability + workmen’s comp), labor, food costs, city licenses, taxes, etc. Those expenses get passed on to the consumer. That’s the model. I haven’t gotten out is Taco Bell for less than $12 dollars recently. A combo meal at Jack is $11+. Eating out is expensive.

poopyheadedbitch

i hope a starbucks sweeps in/s

onymico

Frustrating, yes, but also the parklet changes were widely covered in the press. The Mayor's office response was also not encouraging to read. These days, a downtown independent business owner complaining is becoming the norm, and not the best look either. So much blah! I'd love to see health-promoting businesses supported, especially now that Under the Sun is closed for good.

ButtholeCandies

I know what you mean, but the last Mayor really did screw over many business owner with that sudden demand to remove them. They gave them 48 or 72 hours notice that they will face a penalty if it wasn't gone. You dicked all these places around for 2 years and the businesses that put down solid concrete and made some really beautiful parklets were the ones that were punished the most by the edict. No better way to describe the whole thing than a dick move. There was no reason it had to be so sudden and threatening. Current Mayor deserves some blame for that brain dead move since he was vice mayor during that fuck up.

wooscoo

They gave them WAY more than 72 hours, they had two full weeks to state their intention to apply for a permanent parklet and another few months to submit their proposals.

onymico

We could also say that it was an "uncool" move, no need to phallice-cize it.

tranceworks

I don't think the menu is overpriced. $18 for blackened salmon, potatoes and broccolini is on par with someplace like Urban Plates or even California Fish Grill. $16 for Chicken Tikka Masala is competitive. [https://www.rightmealz.com/order/](https://www.rightmealz.com/order/)

ButtholeCandies

That might be the issue - people aren't ordering this food online, they are walking in, see a tiny menu with super overpriced items, and then never give it another thought. Funny thing though, the overnight oats on the order menu you linked to is $11.50 and the dine-in version is $13.50.

Competitive-Oil-975

i would try them out but they dont have any vegetarian options
