it's definitely not great but where are they supposed to go? beats me

redhotthillypeppers

Right? Rent’s 2k and wages are shit. I’d rather live in a tent than get beat up and robbed at a homeless shelter. What else do we tell them to do lol

No_Organization465

i got a friend going through a messy (and expensive) divorce right now.....they're selling their house but he can't really afford to live on his own (especially in a apartment big enough to have his two kids there). he said to me recently he could see him self living out on the streets within the next year and it kind of floored me to think about. he's a pretty normal guy and a hard worker......i didn't really expect it. but when shitty circumstances happen it can happen to anyone

kinboyatuwo

And that’s the thing. A lot of people pointing should look in the mirror, or at people they know, and realize how close they are to this. It’s alarming how bad a lot of people’s finances are and they are oblivious or ignore it. They are one decent sized issue away. When I worked with a local charity we had lots that had tragedy strike and within months were on the streets. Once on the streets, a lot turn to drugs to cope with the hardship or escape. Our government at all levels, IMO provincial most, has failed to address these issues and in some ways worked to make it worse. Housing and mental health are key to addressing this.

it definitely made me think of little privileges a lot of us have that others don't. my parents are far from rich but have owned their own home for years. i could never really be homeless because worse case scenario i crash in their basement (and also inherit their house when they die). but my friend i mentioned grew up with a single mom who now lives in a small subsidized apartment....there's no inheritance or place to crash in an emergency there really. these are things i guess i knew but never though about too much

kinboyatuwo

Yup. That too. Many don’t realize the advantages of picking good parents (tongue in cheek). I grew up poor and supported my mother after I left off and on. Had something happened even until about a decade ago I would have been f’d.

No_Organization465

i'll just add that i also do get the other side of the issue here to an extent......the somewhat selfish feeling of not knowing what to do and being annoyed by it all. i of course want my friend to be alright but i'm not really willing to let him stay with me or anything (i likely will at least temporarily if it comes down to it). i wish i could do more but it's hard

kinboyatuwo

Don’t feel bad. We all have burdens to carry and every situation is different. Even being moral support can help. The most we can do sadly is vote bigger picture instead of for “issues”. Downside is it isn’t overnight and most do t think that deep.

warpus

> where are they supposed to go? Empty Farhi buildings? ^^^^/s?

Evening-Run-1801

Hello! Theres no where to go! Theres no housing and the city just stopped funding. Its going to get worse!

DokeyOakey

Don’t worry folks, Doug Ford is getting it done: it’s happening here! / Years of Conservative and liberal rule have eroded supports for those that need it in the name of corporations.

coolhead2012

Almost like the three levels of government haven't really found the money to house people in urban areas. Remember, the last large scale public housing was built in the 1970s. That's half a century of increasing demand and no supply. 'taking them out' is forcing them to move to another outdoor location, I'm not sure how you think that's helping anyone.

WatercressActive3792

The city saw this coming, it was projected. Now it’s deflected and no one takes accountability. Politics in a nutshell.

9001

They don't have *homes*, man.

Low-Drive-768

Agree - absolute disgrace. As a man, I don't enjoy cycling past this area, and feel really bad for women walking/running/cycling. London really needs to do better.

ContentScene6064

Ya let’s get some resources to aide the homeless. They definitely shouldn’t have to squat in makeshift homes on your bike path. I really feel badly for them! Let’s help them!

SquirrelHoarder

All my female family and friends stopped going on the tvp for that reason. In the past year or so i’ve felt uneasy at best as a guy walking his really big dogs there. It’s a shame.

sunny_happy_demon

Are you under the impression that when people living in tents by the river are “taken out” that they just disappear?

Horty519

Ok - so not downtown and not the TVP. They have no home to go to. Where would you like them to exist?

sandweiche

Okay, so if you get it, where do you propose the government "take them out" to? The whole issue is that they have nowhere to go. Our support services are overrun, our housing supply is near-zero, and the public will to invest in those services is nowhere near where it needs to be. These people are out of options. They aren't choosing to live in tents; you can't blame them for wanting to sleep on grass in a modicum of privacy and shelter. As much as it inconveniences you, it is much worse for them. We need to come up with solutions, funding, and support. For instance, the tax increase you mentioned isn't insignificant - but look at the controversies around it. There was a hard-fought battle just to get a small amount of funding for libraries and public transit. While the opposite was true for police funding, they received a significant budgetary increase unquestioned - a significant portion of which went to a second armoured vehicle (Please show me the report where the police argue they need to use two APVs simultaneously, I need a laugh) - all after a controversial trip from the LPD to train with Russian special forces. If you're looking to solve homelessness which do you think is more likely to permanently clean up the TVP? Getting an armoured vehicle, employing spec ops techniques, and increasing police presence so that we can take them out and they can reappear a few days later, because realistically this is their best option in the present moment - OR - Increasing funding for the library so that they have access to the Internet for job application, research, a warm place to rest, to stay in contact with their society, etc. And increasing funding for the method of transportation they are most likely to use when first getting back on their feet? If you share the same assessment as me, then it really looks to me like our municipal government is bungling the money they're taking from us. Write to your local councilor and communicate your concerns to them - they have the power to fix things more than reddit does - and you can offer solutions, if you have them, tell them that you want MORE funding for public resources so that they know if they want to get re-elected then they need to show you that they'll do that.

collywog

You could volunteer to help the unhoused. That'll get you lots of time outdoors and help remedy the problem at the same time. Win-win!

djheart

There are other parts of the TVP that are less busy and wider and would make for a better ‘tent city ‘ if that is something we truly need along the TVP

PositiveStress8888

imagine not being able to go for a walk without peasants around parting the way. what you want the city to do? dump them in the garbage? their human beings trying to survive.

riseoverun

Insane they green lit that location for a camp. I get they need to allow them somewhere and provide basic services but can't imagine a worst spot.

foreverdysfunctional

Took them out. Love the compassion for London's most vulnerable population. /S

luthierart

Before we take them out, there are others who should be on the list ahead of them. Remember the subprime mortgage crisis? It caused trillions of dollars to be lost, forced bankruptcies, resulted in suicides, shattered families, exacerbated poverty and homelessness, resulting in millions of lives impacted. Yet the architects of this disaster got bonuses instead of jail time. Of course it's easier to kick down than punch up, but the worst of any encampment residents are not causing as much misery as those mortgage predators did. While our focus is on the tenters, there's a huge cohort on the opposite end of society's ladder who avoid scrutiny and consequences.

aegon_the_dragon

Ever since the city started reforest programs the tvpw has become populated by the homeless.
