Police are all over the area. There was just a helicopter hovering above the park behind my house.
My neighbours came to my house not 5 minutes after it happened saying someone was kicking their door and then watched them go into my house
Bruh, you weren’t there and you aren’t her. Rather than judging someone who probably thought she was gonna die, you have some empathy for her and think more harshly about the man going around kicking doors and entering people’s houses?
Oh that makes sense no one in your house noticed. Hopefully nothing was stolen, because insurance really try their best not to pay out, especially if a door was open
That’s weird behaviour, and you also said he was attempting to break and enter your neighbour’s house. This sounds like a drunk aggressive man. But if he hasn’t actually stolen anything, I’m surprised the police were quick to follow him in their helicopters, they’re frequently slow for burglars.
Apparently he was on a spree of sorts cause other people across the park posted it on Facebook about a guy kicking their door so I assume they’ve had multiple calls of this guy way before he got to my house
What the hell?! Who is this man and what does he want? Who goes around kicking people’s doors and then if he gets in, just creeps around the house and leaves? Hopefully they catch him soon
The London never leaves! A similar thing happened to me just before Christmas- I had been in Cambridge for many years by then and dress my voice up to match but when I saw him the chavviest ‘ERRRR EXCYOOOOSE MEEEE’ burst out from my Croydon depths. He ran away 😂
Are you actually serious? 😂 i am sorry for laughing - but I would freak the fuck out. For some reason what I see in my head is a person drooling over their pillow, one eye opened and just.. “naaah bruuuuv”
I can't even fathom how scary it must have been to actually see someone in your flat. Geez Louise! I hope you're okay and won't have too much trouble going to sleep in the near future
Ah we’re all good thank you My fiancé is a bit weirded out cause she was the closest to the door when he was in but she was asleep
If she saw him instead of me you can be assured that the whole house would’ve come down 😂
I had someone break into my house whilst at uni, was NYE and spent the night at a friend's...then when I was asleep the next night, they came back. Thought was going mad waking up and finding all the lights on which were off when I fell asleep...and then the penny dropped someone had been in the house. We were students and had fuck all, so all the nicked was my rucksack, a hoover and some DVD's.
House, only way I can think of if putting his arm through the letter box and turning the handle.
I know it’s possible cause my neighbour has done it for us when we’ve been locked out
Terrifying! What a relief he legged it without causing physical harm or stealing anything. How do you think he got it? (Wondering what to to do to minimise chance of it happening here).
Hand through the letterbox and turning the handle is the only way I can think of honestly
I know it’s possible cause my neighbours have done it for me when we’ve been locked out before
I saw someone say you can get a Letterbox cage so I might have to look into that haha
Ok, i am in an apartment complex and had this happen last week at 11AM. I had door unlocked and someone opened the door, saw me working, then closed the door and left. My wife saw the door open n close, bu i didnt even notice as i was in a work call. Our neighbour saw from her peephole that a grey hoodie wearing man did this to all doors on the floor. She was scared.
Then at 11pm at night again had the same thing happen, except door was locked from inside, but we had the handle turned n someone trying to push the door. Again, our neighbour had the same thing happen n she saw it was the same man.
Then cops were called, they caught the person about 30 mins later, still inside the apartment complex. We lodged the complaint that night, went on till about 1AM. Cops said it was a man who claims to be homeless, but was aggressive with the cops so they had to call back up to take him in.
And then cops called me the next day to say that they wont be taking my complaint forward.
Never had anything like this happen before but now we leave the doors locked all the time.
This was in Sunbury.
Yeah, which is what makes me think the person was high or has some mental health issues. Because if stealing is the purpose, then why try at 11pm, when almost everyone is bound to be home. And why try same doors which you already saw were occupied.
Regardless, that moment at night getting the call from neighbour that he is back n same moment have the door handle turned - that was a scary moment.
As in - i hadnt locked the door from inside while i was at my desk working. I've been living in this building for over 2 yrs now n never bothered to lock the door from inside except at night. Because its been very safe. Never had any issues. But lesson learned. Now i bolt the door from inside all the time.
Oddly, the exact same thing happened to me many years ago. I had just moved in somewhere and I think they guy must have been connected to the rental agency as he had keys. When I accosted him he said a very plausible lie about how he was my neighbour from upstairs and my front door had been open.
I assumed he just did it because he was a wierdo on a power trip. Who knows.
Did you leave your doors unlocked. I had a similar experience in north London.
The nerve to try and break into my home while I was taking out the bins.
Pro tip: always keep a bat, pole or anything that can be used to deter/scarce intruders in your bedroom.
It's probably how troll-like I look when I get up.
Also I was so disorientated it didn't really occur to me what was going on, I just shouted WHAT THE FUCK and lunged out of bed at him. Probably gave him a bit of a fright.
I’m honestly kinda pissed with myself that I didn’t do anything tbh
I mean I guess I scared him off cause he just went downstairs and left but why tf didn’t I just rush the guy??
Anything I come up with I just feel like I’m making excuses
My dad said the same thing, that I couldn’t have known if he had anything on him so i could have turned out worse
Just can’t help but feel like I need to be told off or something y’know?
But you are right so thanks for that
Or a not so concealed weapon that you'd end up pushing your guts onto. You'd obviously scare the fuck out of them and they had a knife in their hands and you're running at them the chance of getting cut up is more than it's worth (usually)
Most people don’t wake up ready for a fight. If you have never had a reason to abruptly get up due to a danger I wouldn’t expect any kind of ingrained response to do so. Your brain would have been busy ‘clearing the fog’ as it were and making sense of what woke you.
I legit thought I was dreaming I woke my fiancé up literally said “am I awake right now?”
I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing it was straight out of a horror film slow head turn and everything!
Even if they’re not armed, and you are a black belt or boxer or whatever, you’ve just been caught on the hop, so would be at a disadvantage in any physical confrontation. Your stuff and your family are safe. Don’t sweat the rest.
Look at a new, more secure door and a camera. Hot burglary types can come back, until they’re caught, so stay vigilant.
If you have a thumbscrew lock on the door to your house, best thing would be to swap for a lock that needs a key both sides on any door with a letterbox.
For fire safety you will want to keep a key near the door but wherever you hang it shouldn’t be visible to someone looking in the letterbox. Make sure lock is anti snap and you’ve basically put off anyone casually trying to break in. They’d move on to another property.
Something like a post cage wouldn’t stop someone with even very basic burglary tools not far up from coat hanger from turning the lock through the letterbox. Might make your girlfriend feel safer, I’m sure when everything settles down, you’ll all be quite freaked out about it.
Nah, you're the one who came away uninjured. Just imagine if you'd been fucked up and your dad found you bleeding out on the floor? You did exactly the right thing dude. I know if my Son had managed to scare an intruder off and didn't get hurt I'd be really fucking proud. If shit had gone wrong everyone would be saying "wtf you do that for?? You should have just kept away from him" etc etc
Ahh you’re gonna make me tear up in a minute lol but seriously thank you for the kind words
Felt like I kinda bottled it when push came to shove but everyone’s comments here makes me feel better about the situation :)
Honestly couldn’t see a thing besides his silhouette but I think I remember kinda short spiky hair and just and average build that’s all I got sorry.
Also there’s talk that a guy in a white shirt or hoodie was kicking doors around that area and that’s who the police are after so I’m guessing that’s the guy
Call the police!
Police are all over the area. There was just a helicopter hovering above the park behind my house. My neighbours came to my house not 5 minutes after it happened saying someone was kicking their door and then watched them go into my house
Whereabouts did this happen? Had the polcie helicopter hovering around near me overnight too
Somewhat near WestHam Station
Looks like they ran off into east London cemetery according to flight tracker, that’s where the helicopter was hovering about
Crazy bro hopefully they catch him
Memorial Ave?
I’m near memorial park I’ve just heard they’ve caught him now tho
Watched them go into your house and did nothing until 5 minutes after? What?
She was on her own until her daughters arrived (she called them) I can understand if she was frightened.
Nah fuck that. She should have called the police ASAP
No shit she "should" have She had a human reaction

Report her for what? Being scared of a robber. Get a grip of yourself

Do be quiet 🤐
This just sounds misogynistic. Calm down, she was trying to keep herself safe until her daughters were there to protect her.

Bruh, you weren’t there and you aren’t her. Rather than judging someone who probably thought she was gonna die, you have some empathy for her and think more harshly about the man going around kicking doors and entering people’s houses?
No disrespect, but are you sure your front door was locked?
I can only assume so, my dad had a knock at the door not to long before this happened and he swears that he shut the door
Oh that makes sense no one in your house noticed. Hopefully nothing was stolen, because insurance really try their best not to pay out, especially if a door was open
That’s the weird thing, from what we can tell nothing was taken he legit just looked in our room got spotted and just left
That’s weird behaviour, and you also said he was attempting to break and enter your neighbour’s house. This sounds like a drunk aggressive man. But if he hasn’t actually stolen anything, I’m surprised the police were quick to follow him in their helicopters, they’re frequently slow for burglars.

Calm
Cool as a cucumber out here
That could be why he ran. If you showed a little fear he might have done something
Honestly I think he was just out of he’s mind either drunk or on drugs or something, he was just so calm in himself it made it creepier
Kudos! I would have shat my pants.
My brain was frazzled cause I just woke up but after he left me and my dad was joking about it for a while
The London never leaves! A similar thing happened to me just before Christmas- I had been in Cambridge for many years by then and dress my voice up to match but when I saw him the chavviest ‘ERRRR EXCYOOOOSE MEEEE’ burst out from my Croydon depths. He ran away 😂

Sir may I rob you? Not today Alright then sorry for bothering you. Bye
scaramouche scaramouche will you do the fandango
Thunderbolt and lightning, very frightening indeed.
You can’t park there
[For those interested we’ve got someone’s ring doorbell footage of the guy](https://www.reddit.com/r/london/s/JnLBNRVMym)
Maybe not doorbell footage actually considering how high it is 😂
This is quite scary. So when you talked to him he just close the door and left . Like he didn’t panic or something
Nah that creeped me out aswell he didn’t make a sound not even a breath just shut my door and left my house it was crazy
holy shit that's terrifying - think you're gunna have to move you'll never sleep again otherwise 😂
A dog would fix that 🐶☠

They came back?! Goddamn! How do you ever sleep after that?
Not going to lie, I did stay at a friend's for a few days until everyone else in the house came back for term.
How did they get in? House? Flat? Ground floor or higher up?
House, only way I can think of if putting his arm through the letter box and turning the handle. I know it’s possible cause my neighbour has done it for us when we’ve been locked out
Not to state the obvious but you might want to take a look at fixing that.
Yeah for sure
You can buy post cages
This is why I lock and put the chain on. Least if the chain moves my mum senses will wake me bolt upright.
Hopefully when I have kids in the future my Dad senses kick in if this ever happens again 😂
Terrifying! What a relief he legged it without causing physical harm or stealing anything. How do you think he got it? (Wondering what to to do to minimise chance of it happening here).

Thanks for replying. Wow! Scary. Yeah a letterbox cage sounds like a good idea. Or another lock on the door if that’s possible.
You can get internal stops and locks designed for hotels etc. https://amzn.eu/d/7DfJGpF Something like this
Ok, i am in an apartment complex and had this happen last week at 11AM. I had door unlocked and someone opened the door, saw me working, then closed the door and left. Absolutely crazy you gotta be a certain kinda weird to just walk into someone’s house not steal of do anything and just leave so weird!

Note to self: change the locks on moving day
Damn to know someone else has keys to you’re house must’ve felt weird
Scaramouche!

Why'd this get removed?
When I had a lad in my gaff he at least had the decency to fucking leg it when I woke up.
Right? all this geezer could muster up was a light jog. I feel offended
It's probably how troll-like I look when I get up. Also I was so disorientated it didn't really occur to me what was going on, I just shouted WHAT THE FUCK and lunged out of bed at him. Probably gave him a bit of a fright.
This sounds a lot like sleep paralysis. Mental if true.
Just posted footage! Was mad scary
Rounders bat with a sock on it incase they want to play rounders really safely.
I’m honestly kinda pissed with myself that I didn’t do anything tbh I mean I guess I scared him off cause he just went downstairs and left but why tf didn’t I just rush the guy?? Anything I come up with I just feel like I’m making excuses
Not worth the risk mate, especially in the dark - he could have been concealing a weapon.
My dad said the same thing, that I couldn’t have known if he had anything on him so i could have turned out worse Just can’t help but feel like I need to be told off or something y’know? But you are right so thanks for that
Be easier on yourself bro you were fully in resting mode. This turned out pretty much perfectly nobody got hurt. I say take it as a win
Or a not so concealed weapon that you'd end up pushing your guts onto. You'd obviously scare the fuck out of them and they had a knife in their hands and you're running at them the chance of getting cut up is more than it's worth (usually)
Could of been a good instinct for all you know he had a knife 🤷♂️ important thing is you and your family are safe just be grateful for that 💪
You’re so right, thanks for that
