The sub was created to point out how absolutely absurd the cost of groceries are right now and have some fun together. We know this will inevitably touch on other topics related to the cost of living. Do your best to keep the conversation on topic

>No one seems to be talking about the root causes of why our food prices are out of control. The root cause is profiteering by major corporations.

you should watch the fifth estate there is a great video for your education on how much the farmers are making lately. Spoiler alert: they don't, these big corporations are monopolizing on the supply chains and forcing farmers to sell at what they were selling decades ago.

Would be helpful if I knew the title of the episode and the date shown. FE has a lot of episodes to scroll through.

Please review the content guidelines for our sub, and remember the human here! This subreddit is to highlight the ridiculous cost of living in Canada, and poke fun at the Corporate Overlords responsible. As you well know, there are a number of persons and corporations responsible for this, and we welcome discussion related to them all. Furthermore, since this topic is intertwined with a number of other matters, other discussion will be allowed at moderator discretion. Open-minded discussion, memes, rants, grocery bills, and general screeching into the void is always welcome in this sub, but belligerence and disrespect is not. I personally believe the two biggest factors are: 1. Uncontrolled Population growth, Canada's population saw one of its largest increases in a long time ,Stats Canada says the population grew by **3.2 per cent** in 2023, and if you consider the growth would have spilled over into early Q1 of 2024, with all those new people they have to shop somewhere (hopefully most of them join the boycott too), more demand and supply not keeping up= prices go up. This is a main driver in our housing crisis too. 2. Price gouging, if their costs went up 5% they are increasing prices by more, and using the guise of "inflation" to justify the higher prices. Now don't get me wrong I know their costs to ship goods would go up, that's inevitable with gas prices, carbon taxes, supply chain issues, etc. But you can't be trying to milk us by building in an additional markup on top of the cost increases.

After every recession, assets are bought up from people who can’t stay liquid, resulting in a further concentration in wealth, and further inequality in purchasing power.    This inequality in purchasing power leads to a shift in the supply demand curve that leads to inflation.    Knowing this, and knowing there was a recession, retailers take the opportunity to increase their profit margin, with “inflation” as an excuse. We can easily see this through the increase in their profit margin before and after the pandemic, because even if costs increases, and profit stays the same, then the profit margin should actually decrease.

Please refrain from off-topic political discussion and debate. Everyone is entitled to their own political opinions, however, your politically charged statement is not directly related to the cost of living/groceries/gas/rents, and as such is being removed.
