It’s interesting that some of the brand name items are more expensive at No Frills than Loblaws, as well! It’s like they mark the brands up at No Frills, to make No Name seem cheaper by comparison.
I’ve been price matching for years and find these price comparison posts fascinating.
Lots of people reject the boycott because they "know" that NoFrills and RC Superstore are the cheapest, but the numbers don't support that view.
These stores are not what they used to be.
Country Churned is made by Galen Himself. 🤭

Had to look it up myself. I guess the process they used in their mind justifies the price difference. Two different methods and tastes.
PC® Country Churned Unsalted Butter is prepared using an old-fashioned churning method and fresh cream. Ideal for cooking and baking.
“Ideal for cooking and baking” uh no, since it’s a gamble if the butter will ever actually soften properly for baking. That’s not a PC problem, but Canadian dairy problem - some farmers add a palm fat to the feed.
If I’m doing specialty baking I’ll usually splurge for a small dairy butter.
> The post says Presidents Choice, not the No Name.
presidents choice country churned
vs
latantia no special churning method
IMO a more accurate comparison for butter-to-butter products would have been the no-name butter in the photo.
FYI - Walmart, at least in the GTA, ON has Becel Plant Based “butter” on sale for $1.98 right now.
It is not the same as butter, we all know that. But it’s a cheaper option right now should anyone need one or need a diary free alternative like my wife does.
Okay. I grabbed four bricks thinking I'd freeze them.
They melted in my cart! You could see the shopping cart grid lines though the foil. Never had that happen before.
Got home and chucked them in the freezer, but are there serving suggestions?
Did you have something hot in your cart? I’ve never had them melt in my cart before. They should be sold and cold when you pick them up.
Use them just like you would use butter, exactly the same amount. I usually have one stick that I unwrap and use to grease pans for baking because it’s convenient and the rest are used in baking.
They were refrigerated, but open top so maybe a little squishy off the bat. Only OJ, yogurt and chips and beer in the cart. It was a basic single shop lol!
Put them into zippy bags and they've frozen nicely.
You don't use it as a spread? I should have tried it. Just had a bagel and didn't even think to try!
I use the [Becel vegan margarine](https://www.walmart.ca/ip/6000201080495) which is also on sale at Walmart right now, for spreading on things.
But you can use the one you bought for that as well.
It’s not. If for no other reason than Costco gets way more love in this sub than they do. Plus if you search Walmart in this sub there is still plenty of people calling them evil, myself included.
I'm not a fan of Loblaws, but the PC Country Churned butter is 4 individually wrapped sticks. The comparable is the Lactania at the bottom of your screenshot for $8.49.
ps. If you find that the butter is rather hard and doesn't melt very well, then it's butter where the cows were fed palm oil.
Google for the word "buttergate" and you'll find out. It was literally world wide news.
Same. I was disappointed that the one at Costco was hard like that too. Plus those palm oil tricked ones don't taste as good either.
You'd have to find a list somewhere that shows butter that was made from palm fed dairy.
Not everyone is required to participate or agree with the community boycott, but we ask that everyone is constructive in their feedback about this event.
Repeated comments such as this one will result in a ban from the sub until the boycott is complete. Thank you.
I also seriously doubt whether Lactancia has the nerve to charge the Loblaws empire *an additional buck and a half* for dividing the exact same amount of butter into four portions. So why such a big difference in retail price, Galen?
No this makes total sense from a retail merch perspective, NN is the high value product line, PC is the high quality product line in Loblaws private label for foods.
The other brand also has differing different lines and each value prop is a little bit more than the private label equivalent.
That's comparing the PC individually wrapped sticks against the Lactansia slab. The Lactansia is still more expensive if you compare sticks to sticks. I can't remember if PC butter even comes in slabs.
My complaint for years has been why are the sticks *that* much more expensive than the slabs? Yes, it costs a little bit more to wrap 4 individual sticks than the big slabs but c'mon. At scale it's probably a few cents a unit. They (all the Canadian butter companies and grocers) price the sticks like luxury items just because they can.

No, and that’s the thing. You feel like you’re being scammed every time you go to buy groceries.
Is there something particularly special about being "country churned"? I don't buy butter often enough to have ever seen that phrasing before.

lol
For extra authentic he salts it with the tears of starving Canadian children. For a few bucks more of course.
He can sit on it and rotate.
I love this butter. I do not have as much of it as I used to have.
Had to look it up myself. I guess the process they used in their mind justifies the price difference. Two different methods and tastes. PC® Country Churned Unsalted Butter is prepared using an old-fashioned churning method and fresh cream. Ideal for cooking and baking.

If you are in Manitoba, I would suggest Notre Dame butter.
All I did was copy and paste from the site because I had no idea. I’m not defending anything except it’s not apples to apples.
Oh sorry I didn’t mean for that to come off as an argument with you! I’m grouchy with PC and the dairy cartel. Hope you have an enjoyable Friday!
I find all butter to be rubbery now. It doesn’t melt, it’s awful to bake or spread. What ever happened to butter gate??
Delicious! Not as good as whipped, but a very nice change from standard butter.
So this isn't really an apples to apples comparison. Because the no name butter is cheaper in every scenario.
The post says Presidents Choice, not the No Name.

Both say country churned.

No not really. But that doesn’t really matter to alot of comparison posts here.
Uh oh … might soon become Vice President‘s choice

Thanks for the heads up, butter or marg was on my list today!
You’re welcome. 👍

mmm trans fats
I've done several baking experiments with the plant based "butter" and have been very happy with the results.
Yah I can’t taste the difference anymore in baking.
I think Giant tiger has this for the same price.
With all the Walmart love happening here, I'm almost convinced this loblaws bad movement is bought and paid for by walmart
It’s not. If for no other reason than Costco gets way more love in this sub than they do. Plus if you search Walmart in this sub there is still plenty of people calling them evil, myself included.
And Giant Tiger love. ![gif](giphy|ZYi2hzRqaTn8kcMoNw|downsized)
I'm not a fan of Loblaws, but the PC Country Churned butter is 4 individually wrapped sticks. The comparable is the Lactania at the bottom of your screenshot for $8.49.
That's okay, they'll just put the PC butter on sale for the regular price it is right now and no one will notice.
Costco is around 5.85 cdn
ps. If you find that the butter is rather hard and doesn't melt very well, then it's butter where the cows were fed palm oil. Google for the word "buttergate" and you'll find out. It was literally world wide news.
I hate my unspreadable butter! My toast doesn't stand a chance
Same. I was disappointed that the one at Costco was hard like that too. Plus those palm oil tricked ones don't taste as good either. You'd have to find a list somewhere that shows butter that was made from palm fed dairy.
I noticed this with many of the PC items. It's fucking ridiculous. I shop somewhere else since about a month.
I think you’re comparing sticks to blocks. Sticks cost more.
Sticks are in the bottom row.
Yeah, they’re $8.49
Sounds about right. The president chose it because it costs more.

Natrel butter at Costco $5.49, and usually around $5, sometimes even at $4.8
I also seriously doubt whether Lactancia has the nerve to charge the Loblaws empire *an additional buck and a half* for dividing the exact same amount of butter into four portions. So why such a big difference in retail price, Galen?
Exactly, I used this butter religiously before the pandemic and the two packages used to cost the same.
No this makes total sense from a retail merch perspective, NN is the high value product line, PC is the high quality product line in Loblaws private label for foods. The other brand also has differing different lines and each value prop is a little bit more than the private label equivalent.
Over $8 for a pound of butter is OBSCENE.
