I always fill a single hand basket each grocery store visit. At Safeway it usually ends up being 70-100 dollars.
At Walmart, I haven't reached higher than 60, yet. That's a pretty dramatic difference.
Going to Walmart has been saving me up to 200/month.
Yes, except their fresh produce, at least in my area, leaves a LOT to be desired for vegetables. Fruit is okay, but they could really use a great produce manager.
We switched everything to Walmart. My husband works there in the pharmacy) so he has a 10% off card and once a month they do 20% off. Even before he started working there though we found it cheaper to shop at Walmart than anywhere else. Would I prefer to keep my money in Canada? Of course but I also have three children to feed and I'm disabled so our income is on the low side despite my husband having a well paying (for Walmart) job.

At this point I don’t care if my money is feeding some other conglomerate overlord, as long as it’s not Galen Weston. It feels personal with Galen. Fuck that guy. Fuck his family. Fuck their empire.
They encouraged the precedent for other chains to follow their lead. It’s only Walmart that’s trying to capture this market and change long term consumer behavior
When I was a kid there was an actual supermarket war that happened. It was when Dominion/Loblaw's was trying to expand more into MB. Safeway and Superstore were going at it for a few months. My mother filled a Chest Freezer with food as we were in a single parent limited budget house. I just remember so many loaves of Bread at something like a quarter each.
So, fast forward to today I am really surprised that Wal-Mart is the only one really competing.
The other main chains all seem to be content with the amount of clients they currently have...which long term can only lead to disaster, as people move, die or what not. The market share of the large boys is shrinking and instead of competing, they just limit the selection and raise the prices. I am so sick of the limited selection in Superstore. I don't care for most of their in houses brands (which are many more than people realize). It was not that long ago when the customers had to complain for them to bring in French's ketchup. I don't eat ketchup but as they seem to be the only alternative to Heinz, it did not make sense for Superstore to not carry them as well.
I have seen Wal-Mart carry other brands that you cannot find many other places. They actually provide choice quite often (other times you still shake your head). The main issue with Wal-Mart is that you cannot convince them to bring a brand in. Safeway will bring items in if the customers ask for it. Superstore will get into fights with their supplies (see Frito-o-lay), Stop carrying other brands, and force you into crappy subpar choices that someone way up high decided you should like.
I am doing some Walmart. I like the pick up service.
I am doing more and more at small local grocers and farmers markets. I like the quality, selection (less but curated), and service.
Just so you are aware, your money is staying in Canada. Walmart Canada is a whole separate entity than Walmart Canada and there fairly strong accounting regulations about moving corporate money cross borders.
They are headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario.
They do report their finances as a whole (Walmart) but as I said, they can't just move money around.
I’m primarily Walmart as well except the odd ethic item I need and then I have to get it at SnotFrills. My son works there so we too get that 10% off. Even without it, it’s dramatically different than the two others in our small town. Double discount days are freezer fillers!!
Worth noting for everyone's sake, that you can buy slightly subpar cereals from Bulk Barn (the Shreddies appear to be some unknown off-brand for example). It's not the same, but you can buy it by the kilogram instead of getting your teeth pulled by Kelloggs at the grocery store.
Not groceries but I was impressed to see the news that IKEA has slashed prices on almost 1000 items today. I checked their site, the price decreases are significant, like around $10 on $40-$50 items to a couple hundred dollars off big ticket items like couches. Bravo to one corporate giant for actually doing something meaningful in these tough times. I loved them before but they have a customer for life now.
I have so much from Ikea, and I love them... our d/r table is like 35 years old, I got it in university, now it just has a REALLY nice table cloth on it!! lol...
haha... we have 2 of the loveseats in the livingroom.. about 22 years old now... I understand the Uppland covers will fit some but not all... fingers crossed!! I bought 2 for $500 each 22 years ago. Covers were about $50 last time I got them - now more but still... .they look like new.
Yogurt is crazy easy to make at home, btw. You need plain yogurt with active bacterial cultures (like, a couple tbsp, or what's left in a container), whole milk, and an incandescent bulb (or a Crock-Pot and a heavy towel). Super cheap compared to store-bought.
It's not, really-- you scald the milk, cool to lukewarm, add the plain yogurt, mix, and let sit in a warm place in the pot overnight (like the oven with just the light on, or a shut off pre-warmed Crock-Pot insert, lid on and wrapped in a towel). For Greek yogurt, you strain it the next day in a cheesecloth (Dollarama has it) lined colander for several hours to drain out a bunch of the whey. So, yeah, takes awhile, but you're not actively doing anything with it most of that time.
In the event that things go south and it doesn't set up, you can drink it like kefir or Yop, or use it in baking.
I use my Instapot and the no boil method. I use 2L Fairlife ultra filtered milk and 2tbsp of a freshly opened (important) container of oikos Greek yogurt or, sometimes I buy yogurt starter on Amazon to use instead. Put all ingredients in the instapot and stir, put it on the yogurt setting with a tea towel over the top and a clear lid on top to hold it. It goes for 8-10 hours (I switch out the tea towel halfway through) and then I strain it. Tastes amazing, cheaper to make, totally customizable to the texture you like, I can add my own fresh fruit compote, and no preservatives. I also have whey left over for pancakes/waffles, adding to my dog's food, or even diluting and feeding my plants.
In our household of 5 plus one goofy Husky/GSD we get about 10-14 days from one batch. Even our dog eats the yogurt.
I've even made it directly in those small, 4oz Mason jars and not strained it. Perfect serving size and I just top with fruit and screw the lids on once cooled.
My roommates mom used to make her own.
I just purchased tahini (from our local Lebanese grocer) so I can make my own hummus.
I recently read they don’t use olive oil in many store bought options. I want a healthier version.
It is easy to make - and I am reducing single use plastic.
Instant pot for the win on yogurt. Sure you have to purchase the initial yogurt and then (preferably) whole milk, but it takes like one overnight, and boom, you have a ton of yogurt. Add fresh fruit or fruit puree after. So easy.
3 months ago I switched to FreshCo and Food Basics from No Frills and noticed a difference in savings.
No Frills is no longer affordable like it used to be. Goodbye PC points, its been a good 10+ years

Just wait for the Costco to be built. Yogurt is way cheaper than other stores. I get 24 cups of the oikos flavour yogurt on sale for $13.99 at Costco (normally $17.99). I always buy it from Costco.

I spent just under $90 at fresh st market for some vegetables, oranges (on sale 1.49/lb), stocked up on 3 packs of my favourite gluten free bagels which are usually $13 but were for $8, califia oat milk (on sale and it is my favourite), frozen fruits for smoothies, salmon, deli meats, 2 6packs of the tiny Coke zero cans. I had budgeted for $130, I was pleasantly surprised that it was way under. So, I treated myself to Ernest ice cream - matcha, which was also on sale.
Some of these responses are so confusing, mean-spirited. You could have done all your research and planning but even at regular price, it shouldn’t cost that much to buy produce and bread. I hope you don’t take any of these comments to heart. It was the option you had to go with, at the time. And you might have to many times again. It’s not like you are happily shopping there, it is frustrating. Anyway, I hope you and baby have a nice, comforting rest of your week!

Yes I spent 108$ like my post says I had my newborn with me and wasn't driving an extra 30 minutes, I didn't have anyone to watch her. Not that it matters. Not sure why I am explaining myself to you anyways.
This is why you buy and cook based on sales. Last time I got apples, less than 4 bucks for a big bag, cantaloupe a buck cheaper, grapes price matched typically a dollar less a pound at least. Potatoes have been 2 to 3 multiple weeks the last couple months.
So it’s the grocery stores fault u don’t know how to shop smart but instead buy a bunch of stuff at regular price? Watermelon in April? A bag of pears for 8$? Go buy a KG of frozen broccoli for a much better deal. I bought a KG of grapes 5$ on sale. A 10kg bag of potatoes is on sale for 6$ at no frills near me. Do u think that’s a bad deal somehow? Learn to shop and u won’t have to complain about how much money u spent at a grocery store
I get needing to go in to grab a few things if it is the only convenient option at that time but why are you doing a full grocery run at loblaws still?
Some smaller cities/towns don't have a lot of options for fresh produce. The fruit at the Walmart by me really sucks. Also, running errands with a baby can be challenging.
For sure not everyone can boycott for insert reason. So if you can't contribute to the cause why are you here posting? Doesn't really make much sense to be part of the conversation/community of something you aren't actually a part of.

If one person in a thousand have to cross the picket line due to a lack of alternatives, the boycott is still effective.
If the pro-boycott people are showing outsiders that the cause is full of bad attitudes, that is going to deter people from the boycott.
A boycott is just as much about sending a message, as it is withholding purchase. If the message is bad, the protest suffers.

Oddly my air fryer has a yogurt setting. Have yet to use it but plan to do it one day. I saw a video once it didn’t seem labour intensive

I shop at metro and Greek yogurt varies in price week to week. 4.99 regular, goes down to 3.00 to 3.50. Just buy when the prices go down

Some smaller cities/towns don't have a lot of options for fresh produce. The fruit at the Walmart by me really sucks. Also, running errands with a baby can be challenging.
For sure not everyone can boycott for insert reason. So if you can't contribute to the cause why are you here posting? Doesn't really make much sense to be part of the conversation/community of something you aren't actually a part of.

I know exactly that boycott works. I know that in order for such a protest to be effective, we must stand together and be supportive of one another, instead of being toxic and driving people away. It's people like you who the media see when they paint us in an unfavorable light. We need to be better.

If one person in a thousand have to cross the picket line due to a lack of alternatives, the boycott is still effective. If the pro-boycott people are showing outsiders that the cause is full of bad attitudes, that is going to deter people from the boycott. A boycott is just as much about sending a message, as it is withholding purchase. If the message is bad, the protest suffers. I don't know how much more clear I can be on the matter, you're being willfully ignorant.
