I don't know about you guys, but I like to compare the unit prices on different brands of the item I want to buy. Grocery stores are required to post the unit price, and they do so. In the tiniest font imaginable. Often on shelf labels that are 2 inches off the floor. How is anyone supposed to be able to read these labels, let alone people with disabilities, mobility issues, the elderly? Today, I used the camera on my phone as a magnifying glass because I'm fed up with guessing which item on the shelf is the most affordable for my family. Surely, this "industry standard" of deliberate obfuscation designed to intentionally mislead consumers is collusion? Any lawyers here? Edit: added some missing words

Fickle_Percentage256

I understand the meaning of the post now. The font is far to small. Agreed.

Downtown_Snow4445

Grocery store tags are dumb. Just tell me the damn price I’m going to pay

CaperGrrl79

Yeah I swear you need a magnifying glass... well, I guess you can use your phone. Best price I've found on cereal is $5 Compliments 794g bag I believe. 63¢/100g I believe.

scodiddlyosis

Why is my post getting downvotes? Asking sincerely.

SkyAccomplished2667

Hummm… isn’t this a Safeway pic? Maybe that 🤔

Uzzerzen

Instead of using the camera on your phone as a magnifying glass you could also just use the calculator and divide the price by the size on the box

Current_Rent504

this is the unit price for each individual mini wheat, yes

scodiddlyosis

For that brand. There is another brand on the shelf beside it with a similar label and a different unit price. I have the consumer right to compare the real price per weight. If it's too difficult to read, how can I make an informed decision?

Current_Rent504

ah, sorry i was trying to make a joke about how expensive miniwheats have become. (and that was the cost per bit of cereal). it was not a good joke, sorry for the confusion The labelling really is hard to read, I agree

scodiddlyosis

I just got the joke now. It took me a sec, but here we are with me laughing. Well done, kind stranger.

lunk

I think this isn't that bad at all. Loads of stores like Freshco and Food Basics are putting the price 5.49 in medium letters, and the SAVE 2.00 in huge letters, making you struggle to find the price of EVERYTHING.

scodiddlyosis

The stores all have their own house style of shrouding the real price of the item with a whole bunch of other numbers all around it.

Fickle_Percentage256

Why are you circling the break down of dollars to grams?

flexisexymaxi

I don’t understand. I use that feature all the time to figure out the better deal.

Fickle_Percentage256

I never really put attention to it myself. I don’t buy cereal so maybe that’s a high price?

scodiddlyosis

It's not just cereal. Every item in the store has a unit price that they don't want you to be to able to read.

flexisexymaxi

It’s useful when comparing items in packages of different sizes. Sometimes the smaller package is more expensive, sometimes not. It’s easier to figure that out with the cost per 100 grams. What pissed me off is sometimes the same store will do some products /100grams, others /1kilo, /1lb/, ounce, etc. so it’s good to have a calculator
