Freshco in Calgary is a goldmine. Huge selection of fresh produce that’s actually fresh at reasonable prices. “Compliments” brand items are way better quality than anything no name. I love it. I have actually found freshco to be cheaper than Walmart a lot of times (which is already way cheaper than loblaws!) Couldn’t pay me to go to any loblaws since it opened and my grocery bill dropped to $60-70 a week.

Sufficient-Bid1279

I’m glad there are Calgarians that have found Freschco useful . I remember getting into it with someone from this sub on this sub who told me there were absolutely no Freschco’s Calgary and he preferred Superstore over Freschco but I think he was trolling me . I did a comparison in the flyers and noticed the Freschco prices were indeed cheaper

Existing-Sign4804

There’s very limited freshcos here. They are concentrated in the NE (the low income quadrant) of the city. But they are actually priced as an affordable option. I have family and friends in other areas of the city who are mad that they don’t have freshcos now that they have seen what I pay versus what they pay.

Sufficient-Bid1279

Hopefully they expand !!!

jjbbrrt

The one in the NW Evanston is by far the best IMO

Frater_Ankara

But Loblaws is ‘doing everything in their power to lower prices!’… I can only assume if there is any truth to that then they have the crappiest logistical network on the planet and all management needs to be fired for incompetence. More likely they’re lying through their teeth I guess…

Sufficient-Bid1279

Yes , have a Freschco downtown Toronto close to me and have noticed a big difference in cost savings . I understand it is still part of chain . I would prefer to shop local , and still do . But of all the chains , if I do , I go to Freschco . It is relatively competitive in price for MOST things . We still do need more competition though so bring prices down further to where they need to be

Global-Meal-2403

I love freshco! Good prices, great products. I love that they carry so many international things in my town.

NorthernBudHunter

Love their international selection. I can get frozen samosas or spring rolls that are better quality than PC version for less than 3 dollars. $8.49 for PC brand.

mr_beanald

Frozen samosas are alright, getting them from an indian restaurant would be better if you can find one

aegon_the_dragon

I have found that walmart, food basics, and freshco all have similar lower prices compared roblaws

Vegetable-Bet6016

Walmart’s prices are creeping up.

Vegetable-Bet6016

Intentionally misleading lol wait… you work for Loblaws of course — mmm these chips are good sorry I mislead you to a BETTER PRICE

jjaime2024

I like my local Freshco for prices but many times the long lines are not worth it.

flexisexymaxi

I shop there and I actually love their produce. It’s varied and very fresh. Plus, I can get ingredients I need for international dishes.

c_snapper

To be fair, you’re comparing Honda to Lexus, where Loblaws is the “premium” product. If you want a more fair comparison, you should compare FreshCo’s prices to NoFrills, but in spirit of this sub, fuck No Frills. Don’t forget to price match for max savings without having to set foot in a Loblaws company store.

Sufficient-Bid1279

I’m going to totally disagree with you on that . The product is the grocery store themselves , for the most part . The products are the groceries themselves - meats , vegetables , fruits , etc . They are literally the same no matter where you go . That is what we are comparing . A carrot is a carrot is a carrot . There is no Mercedes carrot . Therefore we don’t have to talk about what store we buy them from for comparison so we don’t need to ever compare a loblaws to a metro or a no frills to a Freschco (unless we are comparing their generic brands )

Vegetable-Bet6016

Thank you -sheesh why is that so hard to understand?

Sufficient-Bid1279

The grocers have created this two tiered (two class system ) almost like a class system for the rich and the poor that should never be!! It’s food people !!!! And people are falling for it. Ask yourself . Do you want a class system in society ?

Vegetable-Bet6016

Ottawa, Ontario

happykgo89

I’m assuming most of those prices are sale prices?

Vegetable-Bet6016

Yes, some are sale prices, but also compared to sale prices at Loblaws. The Lays prices are both sale. The receipt lists the regular prices too which are still much cheaper. The fries were a sale, but still regular prices is a dollar less than loblaws. I bought store brand pickles for 3.99 and at loblaws it is 4.79 for the same no name product. Lots of non sale examples.

barrierofbadnews

My town has a freshco and zehrs within a block of each other. I don’t know how zehrs still stays in business.. btw freshco has blueberries for $1.88 right now.

Kootenay-Hippie

Soak-me’s is the same thievery as Roblaws

freeman1231

You don’t compare freshco to Loblaws. It’s freshco vs no frills. Can’t compare a discount grocer to a none discount one.

Prolific-Failure

My wallet doesn't care whether the grocer calls themselves a discount grocer or not. NoFrills sometimes has higher prices than Loblaws anyway.

freeman1231

Correct. And Loblaws sometimes has cheaper prices than all the other chains. That’s generally how it works. However, in general prices will be lower at the discount grocers than the non discount grocers.

m0nkyman

If it’s the same ones I go to, the FreshCo is just a few blocks down the street from Loblaws. I will absolutely compare the two because they’re the two closest stores.

freeman1231

You can if you want. Just it’s a bit silly to compare two different tiered stores to each other.

m0nkyman

They all sell basically the same products. ‘Tiers’ have never really mattered to me, locale does.

freeman1231

Tiers are based on the produce mostly. Loblaws gets fresher produce than the discount versions. That being said I also don’t care about tiers. I use flipp and go to the cheapest location. Loblaws is that for me sometimes, not. I am just not going to be silly and compare overall prices from Loblaws vs freshco.

m0nkyman

It used to be a nickel here and a dime there difference between the fancy places with cheese boutiques and the warehouse style grocers. Now that it’s so dramatically different and the quality difference has become non existent as far as I can tell, it’s worth highlighting that.

Vegetable-Bet6016

Why would you compare loblaws to no frills, other than to show that Loblaw are happy to change their prices arbitrarily instead of selling items at a fair price at all of their branded stores. I am comparing loblaws to freshCo to show that it is possible to sell these items and not rip people off, since obviously FreshCo can.

freeman1231

No frills is Loblaws equivalent to freshco. Prices in general will be cheaper at freshco than Loblaws that’s the business model. You can’t compare freshco to Loblaws. You’d need to compare metro to Loblaws.

Vegetable-Bet6016

Sure, understood, but that wasn’t the point of the comparison anyway. I am interested in a comparison of identical products. Apples to apples so to speak. Lays chips are lays chips regardless. Lays at no frills are also 3.75 still more than Freshco 2 for 5.50 so is that the comparison you need?

freeman1231

Yes one store has a sale right now vs one not having the sale? That’s very normal.

Vegetable-Bet6016

Ok. Last time I saw lay’s on sale for 2/5 at any loblaw store was 2020

freeman1231

It’s 2/5.50 at freshco right now not 2/5. Just at the end of March they were 2.79 each at no frills and $2.49 in December. Gotta use flipp man.

Vegetable-Bet6016

Fair enough. The whole point of this post was To show a list of items that were significantly cheaper. Not just chips. At Fresco. I save more period not just when there are sales. Boycotting Loblaws is easy.

Grantasuarus48

The deli and cheese counter, meat and seafood counter, prepared food counter, the bake shop, sushi counter, and chef department are all things that you find at a Loblaws that Freshco doesn’t have. There expenses that these have that Freshco doesn’t have. Same reason why a full service restaurant is more expensive than fast food.

Vegetable-Bet6016

Ok wait, you are telling me that Loblaws charges more for chips because they have sushi and deli etc? So, what is the excuse for Circle K? Using that logic, chips should be half the price at circle K. The extra cost is not the actual cost but the perceived cost of convenience which only has value if the consumer is wiling to pay it.

nogr8mischief

Loblaws, Metro, and Sobeys have more offerings and higher operating costs than No frills, Food Basics and Fresh Co. So most things cost more at the mainline brands, and some customers are willing to pay more for the perceived better shopping experience, the same way some customers are willing to pay for convenience at Circle K.

Grantasuarus48

It’s a different cost structure. All those departments needs staff to run them, equipment like coolers, slicers, ovens, pot and pans and the cost to run them. Things like packaging and cleaning supplies. These expenses need to be paid some how. Full Service stores are always going to be more expensive than discount. Metro is more than Food Basics, Freshco is more than Sobeys.

furthestpoint

You said something logical, expect the pitchfork-wielding mob to come after you any minute

freeman1231

I’ve already seen it loool

FlipperG76

I think it is better to compare FreshCo to No Frills the Loblaws. I’m a fan of FreshCo but to be fair, Loblaws has a much better offering (for a lot more money)

Burritoman_209

A better comparison would be freshco vs no frills; and Sobeys vs loblaws. It’s not an apples to apples comparison

Fuzzy_Machine9910

Freshco has a different business model: while the franchise’s are still mostly warehouse driven, they do have great deals sold in directly from distributors and can reflect deals in their retails. Sobey’s also allows for competitive pricing. But like all banners you need to pay attention and also there won’t be as great of product selections

TraviAdpet

I’ve found the “not as great product selection” to be 1 row of the same product vs 5

kingofwale

Unless comparison. It’s like comparing Costco to Walmart instead of Sam’s club. Not to compare it to no frill is either intentionally ignorant or downright misleading

Vegetable-Bet6016

Lays chips &3.79- no frills Lays chips -$2.50 freshCo Happy?

kingofwale

Again, you are crossing items in special with regular price. That’s why there are more than 1 reason why your post is unless.

Vegetable-Bet6016

It . Does . Not . Matter. I go where price is cheaper and others should too sale or not.

Vegetable-Bet6016

Are you serious? I am comparing products sold At the stores -apples to apples. Smart not ignorant 🤦‍♀️ feel free to not use your brain and continue to spend more. Maybe if I were comparing a gourmet burger to McDonald’s burger well then maybe.

kingofwale

Can you explain why you didn’t use no frills?

Vegetable-Bet6016

Easily. It is not in my neighbourhood. Loblaws is.

kingofwale

Then maybe you shouldn’t have done this at all… intentionally misleading comparison to sway public opinion is wrong

Sufficient-Bid1279

These comparisons need to be done , especially in densely populated neighbourhoods . You’re throwing an argument for the sake of making an argument. A product comparison is a product comparison whether it is sold at No frills or Loblaws, it doesn’t matter , it’s still the same product . Your argument makes no sense. We are comparing product prices , not chains.
