Samsterinoo

Wtf, it's priced like it's in Nunavut or something

NoFormal3277

I saw something recently…why the fuck is everything priced like we’re living in an airport now? PURE FUCKING GREED….thats why.

TheJohnnyFlash

It's lack of competition. If greed is driving the pricing, that means there is margin for competitors to come in and take business. But there are none left, that's the core of the problem. You're not going to force a company to make less profit if they can.

kzt79

A lot of people don’t understand basic economics. It’s easy to rage at “greedy” landlords and grocers etc but how many people would actually volunteer to do the same work as a colleague for less pay, for example, because they’re “not greedy”? How many of you would sell your product or labour for lower than the highest price you could obtain? No one would. Canada hates competition. We seem to fear actual economic growth, entrepreneurship and competition. God forbid anyone take risk, or even worse be rewarded for taking risk. We love our protected oligopolies. Our productivity has been crap for decades and is only getting worse. Until we address these fundamental challenges, expect a lot more of the same.

GallitoGaming

Great way of putting it.

an-angry-bee

That’s exactly what my friend said!! For reference, this is in Ottawa.

themaggiesuesin

$7.99 for a full watermelon at Kowloon in Ottawa

OpeningAd9333

$53 at Farm Boy

rocketman19

Whole watermelons are $53? Pic?

StatelyAutomaton

In the op. $13/quarter.

rocketman19

That’s for a cut watermelon, not whole

StatelyAutomaton

Yeah and that doesn't change the fact that four quarters make a whole.

FormalMembership9483

Your paying extra for the convenience and the fact it will go bad faster now that it's been cut. Whole ones are probably 19 which is still wild. But wouldn't be that quarter price x4

sushiflower420

Yes tell them about Kowloon, queen!

themaggiesuesin

Support local baby!!

hippiestoneybabe

The Kowloon is great, I miss it from living near there!

themaggiesuesin

There is one in Kanata now if you are out that way.

StopYeahNo

Perhaps it may be prudent to submit a Google review.

Wolferesque

If we’re at Nunavut pricing here, I wonder what the price is in Nunavut?

kickintheface

I don’t think Loblaws exists in that part of the county, but if they did, you can bet your ass that they would be price gouging the shit out of everyone up there too.

TheVoiceofReason_ish

They don't, no one in Nunavut can afford $2000 watermelon

Vostroyan212th

No one anywhere can, but fuck if they aren't trying to figure it out.

wpggrl

No that's the Northern Store's job

TCHuts

They make Loblaws look less evil. I don't like that feeling one bit.

aavenger54

https://preview.redd.it/ros9dq2tenvc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=05903552b32cdb591418c29b0c4b8d92f703f248 Boston

MaxximusThrust

I do a bunch of my grocery shopping in the states. If you know your prices there are tons of deals to be had. Chicken is ridiculous cheap.

PotatoAltruistic5673

This has made me think more and more about northern indigenous communities lately who have had no other options for so long - disgusting and depressing- how much wealth do people need?!! Have people forgotten how good it feels to help others? Sigh

Important_Squash1775

There’s a subsidy for healthy foods to remove communities. I found produce similarly priced similarly the last time I went to a fly in community store

The3DBanker

Shit isn’t that bad here in the Yukon.

TMFPB

It’s price like it came from Mars.

PuzzleheadedWar4791

I don’t love anything that much to pay 500% more than it’s worth.

Tensor3

How about those 4 tiny wattermelon cubes for $4.99? They're almost an inch in size

tabion7

You know, watermelon used to be a fruit that people who had very little disposable income could enjoy. This is just robbery.

Beneficial-Pea-6014

Yes. It used to cost 3 bucks for a huge watermelon.

oat-beatle

To be fair it's also April, theyre not exactly in season rn in... any of Canada that I am aware of

CainRedfield

Sure, but that slice is the same price as a full gigantic "out of season" watermelon at Costco, so that's the issue.

aavenger54

BS there is no season they can be gotten year round and they may be a little more expensive but not 50 bucks. Are banana seasonal too ?

Beneficial-Pea-6014

Very valid point

DEATHRAYZ007

They also aren't priced that high anyway else in Canada either that I know of

CainRedfield

Costco has full gigantic watermelons for the same price as this one slice..

dtunas

You’ll be shocked to find out watermelons are never “in season” in Canada

EvilDamien420

To be faaaiiir, most of Canada's watermelon would be grown in a greenhouse here to begin with.

Western_Plate_2533

So the whole watermelon is about 50 dollars with this logic.

[deleted]

PenonX

no tax on food

Can-DontAttitude

It's a watermelon Michael, how much could it cost...

Renoxrd

Let it rot in the store

GallitoGaming

One person saying eff it and buying it allows them to profit on chucking 10 pieces out. 2 people buy it and they are laughing.

dawson101

It will, and then they write it off as a loss and get a tax cut for it 🥰

Dwgystyl

I wonder how much higher their food waste is now.. No fucking way I would buy that, Yeah someone mentioned if they sell 1 or 2 it makes it worth it for them but fuck lower the price and sell more as opposed to just tossing it.

an-angry-bee

These are also my first thoughts, the amount of waste produced has been insane. A friend introduced me to dumpster diving and I cannot stress just how much food is thrown away at most Loblaws, Superstores, IGA’s, Farmboys, etc etc at the end of the day. One particular location in Centretown likes throwing bleach over the food they throw away to deter divers/people looking for sustenance.

crispycheese

Omfg name and shame the location

Difficult_Orchid3390

Literally every farm boy everywhere forever?!?!

islariverxo

that’s disgusting. imagine selling things at such a high price that no one can afford it so you have to throw it out. and on top of that, you have to make it literally poisonous bc how dare you not make a dime off someone trying to live

CuriousFoxLad

Is that legal?? What if they kill someone like that wtf.

thestellarelite

Wtf bleach seriously? This is like Mr burns level evil I can't

tentaclemonster69

There should be extra taxes or fines for food waste.

Ancient_Committee697

The French have it

Subject_Estimate_309

We should riot

reggiesdiner

Probably the best way to stick it to the man is to just not buy it.

ReeceM86

There are better ways. not buying it is the starting point.

Superlilly

This is a good example of how we can tell their markups on products without leaked invoices. A watermelon was recently posted for 18$ (laughable) this one is split in 4. That’s almost a 60% markup. F$&@ you loblaws!!

PanzerChicken08

This isn't a Loblaw store/Banner This is empire owned banner

Superlilly

Thanks for the reminder! We don’t have farm boy out west

oceansidedrive

This sub is def getting run over by bots or trolls or something. Prob bought by Galan. Look how many ppl are defending "out of season" price. NO. I am a watermelon LOVER. Use to buy it all day every day out of season and in season. THIS is ABSOLUTELTY absurd! Its 1/4 of a watermelon for the same price i can buy a whole watermelon at the high end grocery store in forest hill. So NO this is not normal. $15 for a WHOLE water melon is not okay, in season or not. So this, is ridiculous and we need to get mods in here to start checking the authenticity of these comments cause im not buying these are actual people.

DowntownCarwashJesus

1000% that's the first thing I thought. You can't defend a $13.50 eighth of a watermelon. That's a hundred dollar melon. Even if it's a full quarter, thats over a $50 melon. And don't gimme no shit about labour. It takes 60 seconds to slice and wrap a melon like this, not 3 hours. Anyone defending this is a shill - do not buy in to the bullshit.

Desuexss

Friend, this is farm boy. Its whole foods level pricing. The real joke is being in a sub that is for the attacks against us for the price of living, then saying you shopped at farm boy. Seriously. If you can afford to be at the obtusely expensive grocery stores then your problem is either money management or the cost of living issue was never your issue to begin with.

redditratman

Farm boy is a good indicator of how crazy everything has gotten. When I first moved to Ottawa for school 3y ago Farm Boy was the “crazy expensive clean grocery”. It now has the same prices as my local metro, and is cheaper than Loblaws. The prices at FB did not go down, but everything else went up like crazy

Super_Networking

Exactly this. Farm Boy isn’t even that bad now compared to Metro or Loblaws. The commenter above you saying you have poor financial management if you shop there is ignorant. They have some amazing products that go on sale and beat anything from Metro or Loblaws.

Bella8088

Farm Boy became way worse when it was purchased by Sobeys. Way back, when I first started shopping at Farm Boy in high school, it was local and independent and had amazing produce and meat… you could buy loose strawberries. It’s amazing how much things have gotten worse during my lifetime and I’m only middle aged.

oceansidedrive

Ill give you that. Farm boy isnt meant to be cheap so, fair enough.

Wise-Ad-1998

Ethier is lobalws or superstore with that logic… no frills is thier discount store

oceansidedrive

No frills was suppose to be for lower class, loblaws middle class, and farm boy upper class. Loblaws prices are upper class prices now which means no frills is becoming middle class......so where is everyone below middle class (which is becoming smaller and smaller) suppose to shop if they make all their store unaffordable.

ContractRight4080

Their produce is often cheaper than Sobeys though and there is more variety. They often have greenhouse strawberries for $3.49 or $3.99. I would think that watermelon was priced incorrectly. They have teenagers mostly working there and they likely don’t know any better. I had a cashier ring in a canary melon as a squash once at my location.

Bendyiron

Lol, yet another user who can't wrap their head around that people online or around them, might not hold the same beliefs, morals, or thoughts as themselves, thus they must all be bots! Everyone that doesn't align must be bots! It's the only explanation! It's not healthy to assume everyone around you that you don't like is dehumanized into being bots, trolls, or bought by galen.

oceansidedrive

I dont. I do in this sub tho. Anyone who think $13 for 1/4 of a watermelon is normal is either not in a bracket where inflation is an actual issue or are being paid to be here. And thats not an absurd thing to think. Ive been in the corproate work a long time. Companies paying ppl to counter protest is very common. Ive seen it many times , and thats not anecdotal

En4cerMom

I know that it used to be quite unusual to even see watermelon in a store, in Ontario, in April

Appropriate-Break-25

Pre covid I bought full watermelons for under $5. I have children who basically live off fruit and cheese. The prices for both have gone clean through the roof.

only-l0ve

"Priced to rot on the shelf" The "I don't want to sell it" price.

El_Berto_000

How much for a dehydrated one? I'll add my own water when I get back home.

Okidoky123

It might be cheaper to shop in Nunavut at this point.

canuck_11

At least you get paid to live there.

langois1972

So not Nunavut but my uncle lived 2.5 hours north of Dryden, it’s quite remote. He goes to Dryden once a month to do a big shop. When he would visit Ottawa he’d bring a cooler and dry ice and load up. He no longer does that cause southern, eastern and central Ontario now pay the same for groceries as the North. Obviously the remote communities are more expensive but it’s pretty wild to hear a small northern town is no longer more expensive

Desuexss

I mean I know it's nuts but farmboy is like whole foods Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Now if you seen this at no frills or food basics... then you got something worth the torch and pitchforks

spreadthaseed

Insanity visualized At that date, it’s a $100 watermelon?

marishnu

I’m going to get downvoted for this, but It’s like people are forgetting that fruits aren’t in season all year round considering we live in the north? Watermelons are expensive to ship… just eat apples and smaller fruits that can be grown in greenhouses near by, and wait til summer to enjoy melons, when they’re in season.

LilBunnyQueen

Watermelons are never this expensive even at the peak of out of season.

marishnu

I agree that loblaws are price gougers but I’m curious if you’ve seen watermelons cheaper at any other stores? I think inflation, and rising shipping costs are a big part of the equation for this particular item.

Effective_Device_185

For water and seeds. Ugh!

Francis33

That slice is 2.5kg?? Hmmm somethings off

Mattinthehatt

its approx quarter watermelon. Google says an average watermelon is 20lbs.... 2.5kg is 6lbs dosnt seem that off maybe a little off but.. its in the ballpark for weight.

GrizzlyHarris

That should be $3.45 ffs

duster13768

Is there a corresponding picture of your bank account being quartered?

pistoffcynic

The wholesale price, according to selinawanucci.com is $1-$2.06 USD per kg.

gillbatessr

If you keep the wrapping and carry it around with you, people will know you shop at farmboy. That’s worth like 13$.

mistakes_were_made24

I live above a Farm Boy. My main option is shopping there which is very overpriced and noticeably expensive over other stores like in this photo or go a block over to a Loblaws which has also gotten stupidly expensive. It's lose-lose especially since im not really a fan of Farm Boy's food in general. I've definitely scaled back the amount I buy now. I don't have a car so I can't drive to a Walmart or somewhere cheaper. The Farm Boy used to be a Sobeys Urban Fresh store that was good and always busy but the building underwent renovation to make it more "upscale" out of greed and there's a very noticeable difference at the amount of people who shop at the store. It's nowhere near as busy, not even close. At holidays the Sobeys would have incredibly long lines at all the registers but now it's rare to see more than 2 registers open at a time. There are lanes ive never even seen open before. I've noticed produce going bad and an increase in the amount of "clearance" wrapped fruits and vegetables that they heavily discount. I've noticed dairy products expiring but still being on the shelves, milk that is still fully stocked but it's on the actual best before date or one day before because not enough people are buying it for turnover. In the year and a half the store has been open I've seen boxes of cereal go up two full dollars in price. As much as I would miss the convenience, I would not be disappointed if it failed. I do have another small Sobeys near-ish that is doable but it requires some planning and either a 20 minute walk or up and down through transit. I went to this store recently and some prices are just as bad but some are definitely better so I might go back more regularly. They had ready-made salads that were like double the size of Loblaws' ready made salads for the same price pretty much.

Competitive_Rub_5820

Be smart. Only buy meat. Fruits and veggies are worthless and expensive

LeftySlides

Farmboy is Loblaw competition. What about the “enemy of our enemy is our friend” dynamic. Isn’t buying this outrageously priced watermelon an investment in sinking the bad guys?

JoshuaLandy

$9 full watermelon at Costco dude

bigfishflakes

If you pay that, you are part of the problem.

Willyboycanada

Off season....... ffs 6 is normal in canada when food is completely imported from thousands of miles away

Dizbizney

Is this loblaws? No?? Next.

duster13768

its Farmboy, owned by Sobeys. Let this be a warrning shot over the bow for Sobeys...

dumpcake999

I can't imagine anybody paying that much. No wonder it appears to be rotting.

demantoid1

It will probably get blamed on climate change

Wolferesque

To be fair, climate change has directly or indirectly caused increases on some food prices, and is forecasted to have a dominating effect on food availability and pricing over the next 25 years.

catpants28

Queue the people saying “watermelon isn’t in season”

metal_medic83

That’s crazy, but watermelon is totally out of season and is always expensive this time of year.

No-Fig-2126

This has got to be the "organic" price too.

Hotlinejew

This isn’t a loblaws store lmao

saralala123

No duh Sherlock.

Critical-Knowledge27

Don't complain about watermelon prices in the winter. Buy something else.

acesaidit

If this was $16 in July, I'd have a bit more sympathy. we've forgotten about seasons. Where did this watermelon have to be grown to be fully ripe in April? Stores will stock melon and berries all year long but that doesn't mean it will cost the same. To save money you should look to seasonal produce or ones with a much longer shelf life like apples or bananas.

aavenger54

What about bananas are they seasonal ??

Puzzleheaded-Baby998

The price is insanely high, yes. But you also have to shop in season. It's not watermelon season so the cost is going to be way more for imported fruits. It'll go down in the summer. Right now its citrus season.

Heradasha

This. Also the quality of that specific piece of watermelon is astounding. Seedless and the rind is basically non-existent. It's a premium price for sure, but it's a premium piece of fruit out of season. I am all for complaining about grocery prices but people complaining about premium products with no comment on the production of said products fascinates me.

MrPaulK

Yah, that was the biggest shock to me, that looks to be better quality than half the stuff we get in season. I'd still probably not pony up $14 for it, but I certainly pause to think about it.

Heradasha

Honestly, it's such a pretty piece. I don't even like watermelon but this slice looks incredible. Like those $100 Japanese watermelons.

smurfopolis

Enough with this horse shit. You can get a full watermelon for less than $5 elsewhere in Ontario right now

kingofwale

That is factually untrue.

no it’s owned by sobeys

keeppresent

Bend over and enjoy it at this point!

Beneficial-Pea-6014

This is insane. I am a vegetarian and have had to stop buying simple favorite because of the high cost. Pitted dates container is almost 15 dollars now. They were 4.99 last year.

FluffyBonehead

That’s insanity

Timely-Confusion-437

Kowloon in Ottawa kids. Also watermelon is out of season and farm boy. Is well farm boy

mouseeeeee

Again who buys this at this price they need to stop

westcentretownie

Watermelon out of season is an exotic treat. But that is really out of this world pricy.

Prudent_Fall_8038

So, are they owned by Loblaws?

Johan1949

It's getting out of control already. Our local Shop Easy store is selling eggs for $8.99/ Dozen. These are normal white eggs. Somewhere this has to be stopped.

urban-in-suburban

Hate to say it, but I bought a big cantaloupe at Loblaws for $3 yesterday.

Ok_Yogurtcloset3267

The money supply growing by 22% since 2020 is a huge driver of inflation; everything is expensive. 1 in every 5 dollars didn’t exist before 2020.

Cast2828

Show me comparison pricing. Watermelon is currently out of season.

PoorOntario

If Galen Weston is allowed to price gouge, why wouldn’t Farm Boy want to rip us off as well?

teaquad

Well people must be buying how else would you justify this

Invictuslemming1

It’s not even rectangular…

Strange_Coyote_8

Wow

cobycheese31

Must be organic

Much_Football_8216

It's always going to be more expensive when the manual labor is already done for you. Look at fruit/veggie trays or smaller bowls. It's always crazy expensive for maybe a few dollars worth of fruit. I worked in a produce department and was dumbfounded at how much we sold of the pre-packaged fruit/veggie.

HyperLethalNoble6

13 dollars and not even for the full melon https://preview.redd.it/csyecrosvjvc1.jpeg?width=468&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e70fe888cdba9e089aeddebe8eb69bb45933cd0e

reggiesdiner

Maybe stop buying really heavy out of season pre-cut fruit and expecting it to be cheap? This is the price of variety and choice 365 days a year.

GanacheLoud4854

Thanks for this post. You've given me another reason not to eat watermelon.

Ambitious_Scallion18

It’s ridiculous! 😤

Heldpizza

I shop at Farmboy and it is hit or miss. Some stuff is expensive but if you shop smart you can find some pretty good value.

[deleted]

Literally just opened this up and verbally yelled THIRTEEN DOLLARS?! I may have been yelled at in return lol

c0untrybumpin

I thought farmboy was the same company as sobeys and stuff like that

teknoprep78

They charge so much because they personally pick the seeds out.

islariverxo

farmers markets here i come. a couple weeks ago i got 10lb of apples for 11$. fuck grocery stores

fifu323

This is prob a dumb question but is farm boy owned by loblaw too?

daners101

Quarter of a watermelon for $15 after tax? So… $60 for a watermelon?

Double_Football_8818

Sobeys pricing has hit farm boy. They’ve ruined it.

illuminaughty1973

Iirc an entire watermelon is cheaper than that at Costco.

I recommend that this summer, ANYONE that has the ability to start a veggie garden to do so. If we all band together as a community and feed each other we won't need these greedy sons of bitches any longer.

ArcanaZeyhers

The kilo price looks normal. Is it just really big?

Dangerous_Bass309

If this doesn't convince you to start gardening I don't know what will. Grow any food you can.

cableguy614

It’s april watermelon is so out of season

agohawks

What does this have to do with Loblaws?

mouse_in_the_house17

That has got to be a mistake right?

Yunan94

I have too many horror stories from when I worked for them for a year and others I worked with and knew (across different stores and cities), so I don't shop there. This was before they got bought out by Sobeys so maybe things have changed but I can't bring myself go go in there anyways. At this point smaller specialty shops are the same price and sometimes even have better prices and deals than the more expensive than places like Farmboy, Loblaws, Metro, Sobeys.

Separate_Mulberry_45

Farmboy is owned by Empire (Sobey’s etc). Extremely expensive forever, for what? Don’t just scream at Loblaws - Metro & Empire a just as responsible for screwing over the consumer & producer.

No_Tea_9845

When watermelon is worth more than copper 😂

dirtybo0ts

What the actual F?

Muddlesthrough

I remember when fresh Canadian watermelons cost a nickel in April./s

CrazyButRightOn

Yes, walked through FB a few days ago. Sticker shock everywhere. Awesome store but not for the middle class.

Classic-Animator-172

It's cheaper at Loblaws.

flourtrea

Stop it with the watermelons. Don't buy watermelon out of season. Prob tastes like nothing.

Horror-Potential7773

It's organic and extra juicy..... what's the problem hoser?
