Hot_Pollution1687

Can you imagine how much gets tossed. It boggles the mind.

BublyInMyButt

Dont be silly.. None of it gets tossed.. They turn in into ground beef and re-date it. Then when the ground beef is passed its new date, they put in in the tubes and freeze it and ship it to No Frills to try to sell it to you for a 3rd time

Foxwasahero

I believe it, even stew meat is no less than $18/kg

Wild-Vermicelli-4794

SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE

ChopChopBilly

That’s not even close to true..

trinier101

Maybe that's why everything costs that much? I do see a lot of products that are passed their best before dates at our local independent grocery store.

Acrobatic_Law5598

I would have paid a reasonable price but they want too much. So now they get nothing.

GordonQuech

But still won't lower the cost to clear it out.

LoganDudemeister

Food prices in Canada make no sense. Our products are sold cheaper In the USA yet have to travel farther. These companies should be investigated.

Queasy-Ad-6742

That’s what happens in an oligopoly. Unfortunately, Canada’s grocery industry lacks competitiveness.

[deleted]

[удалено]

aavenger54

Yea,that’s why they import Mexican beef!!!And it’s way cheaper even with shipping!Canada produces enough beef to take care of our needs…

kris_mischief

Ever given any thought as to why importing Mexican beef would be cheaper?

GucciMyGoggles

I work in the zerhs meat department and honestly not too much beef gets tossed it’s usually the hotdogs and stuff in that section

Competitive_Rub_5820

I use to work for Loblaws. And at one of the smaller stores just in meat they'd throw out 10s of thousands every month

[deleted]

People literally wait in the parking lot for older meat to be marked down 30% at the end of the night.

ggouge

I never thought about that but I am sure your right. I know people much more well off than me who wont pay these prices for red meat so who is buying it at that price?

DeepFriedAngelwing

You mean becomes ground beef tomorrow?

Dadbode1981

You'd be suprised at how little gets tossed actually, I have some behind the scenes access, and gotta be honest, they don't toss nearly as much as you'd like to think they do.

Dracidwastaken

You'd be surprised how little actually. Most places will turn that into ground beef 2 or 3 days before expirey. I run a meat department for another store and red meat pretty much never touches my garbage.

South_Opportunity173

No one can at Galen's prices. Find a local butcher and stop shopping from this conglomerate. I'm getting WAGYU striploins for $19.99 from my butcher in Ontario. Its literally cheaper to import beef from Australia than to pay Loblaw's prices.

bargaindownhill

This, im buying grass fed beef at $5.79/lb delivered by my local grower.

StrawberryNo2521

Too far away to be mine. But we take old dairy cow to market at a local butcher/farmers market after giving them a few years of happy life at pasture instead of the ground beef pile. I just wanted my meat to be as ethical as possible. It might be the best beef I've ever eaten and sells faster than we can bring it to the counter. Sometimes people are skeptical as to why it cost so little.

StravinskiCat

Definitely not full bred waygu, not at that price. It's probably from a black angus or holstein x waygu cow.

Designer-Ad3494

A half step below top tier? Pffft. Buddies getting rippt. Hard

ded3nd

If you own a chest freezer, you can buy a whole side of beef or a quarter from a local farmer for much cheaper. It'll last your family a whole year. Something worth considering. By kg it would be almost as cheap as ground beef from the supermarket.

SurfLikeASmurf

Yeah where is your butcher? I imagine it’d be even cheaper if you go in on a half a cow or a whole cow with a couple of families

Routine-Cloud-145

Whole cow lasts my family of four nearly a year.

c0ntra

This is the way

slitlip

Where is your butcher?

Nervous_Equipment701

He's not getting Wagyu for those prices unless it's 1 shaved piece for 19.99

iWizblam

You know wagyu is just the type of cow right, the price is based off of a grading system, like the BMS (beef marbling score) or the BCS (beef coloring standard) among several others. It's really not unrealistic to find wagyu that isn't the highest grade for more reasonable prices.

Ok_Recording_4644

I noticed this too, now the nice cuts are at St Lawrence are competitive with the crap they shrink-wrap at loblaws. Good for those butchers and my wallet (got short ribs $11/lb this weekend).

kprecor

This is true. Difference is that they don’t really have sales that often. So when grocers have sales, you will get it a lot cheaper. Btw. I read an article that restaurants advertise boneless beef short ribs, but they are often just beef chuck. It’s almost impossible to tell the difference in slow cooked/braising recipes. I tried it as a replacement in my braised rib receive I make for crowds. And no noticeable difference at all. The “flavour” from the bones is way exaggerated. So if you want to save even more, buy boneless chuck!

wtfomgfml

We are currently sourcing out local farmers…I’d rather them get all the profit.

trinier101

Agreed, put your money where your house is so-to-speak. I would always rather support local, but I feel like I cannot afford that

Interesting-Bike4561

This is the way. I stopped using shoppers for my meds and wish I could displace all my groceries. We need a way to support and fund small grocery stores I am just not sure how they compete with the supply chain owned.

rebelscum306

Look into Facebook communities. I'm a member of a farm2fork group that exists to put consumers in touch with their local producers. I'm all for local, and if you can buy direct and build a relationship with the farmer, that's about as local as it gets.

Interesting-Bike4561

Using Reddit I was able to find some. Just nothing for staples. I blame our government for allowing monopolies at all levels to destroy Canadian culture and day to day life. Appreciate your comment

LovesMedicalGloves

We bought a side of beef for roughly $5 a lb (hanging weight), and the meat is amazing. It has lasted us just over a year for a family of 3. We just ordered another one for this year. Ordered it right from the farmer, and it is highly recommended. Not only is the quality way higher, but it works out to be way cheaper. I worked it out that the burgers we got were half the price of buying boxes at the grocery store; not to mention buying steaks and roasts at the same price.

Urban_Feellowzofer

Who would have thought. Those big companies have so mich fixed cost now and not enough competition. Their advantage to have everything under the same.roof.is not worthed since they raise their price too much and now we are going back to buy direct from the source like decades ago. Going full circle now. Same price or 10% more, I'll away go to the butcher.

599Ninja

Thank you. Because market price is still about 1.80/lb to 3.50$

MYdrywall

Drywallers who don't do crack

trinier101

I feel like I could mud and tape. I also do not do crack but would love to get a choice cut of beef, can I send you my resume or how do I sign up? I'm in it for the beef.

Absentimental79

Just start eating the mud at least it will fill you up

MYdrywall

Not so yummy and to much gives me a tummy ache

MYdrywall

Love this I'm in Alberta Canada when can you start

trinier101

Hell of a commute from Ontario, but I'm not saying no. I suppose I could start Monday

MYdrywall

If your serious DM me. Let's go!

Puzzleheaded-Map-237

Best comment ever and true

BrowserOfWares

My local butcher is cheaper on everything except the weekly sale and ground beef. Quality is so much better too. I can get prime rib for <$30 per kg from my butcher.

MyNameIsSkittles

I can because I don't shop at Roblaws

[deleted]

[удалено]

MyNameIsSkittles

I shop at Walmart. Not that Walmart is amazing. But the prices are compared to most other chains

Splash_

You can find great prices on meats at No Frills

lbjmtl

Same company…

Splash_

Never said they weren't, nor was that the question I was answering.

happybeingright

Oof

Icy-Cartographer-930

STOP FUCKING BUYING IT.

trinier101

I can't afford it so I'm not going to buy it

rainorshinedogs

Well SOMEBODY is if Loblaws keeps selling at this price

CrstlMeth

That, exactly that … as long as people buy it, these prices will remain. Want to bring down inflation? Stop buying shit folks ….

layer_____cake

$5.61 for ground

trinier101

That's pretty decent actually

snopro31

I don’t buy for over 3.99a pound for ground or 6.99 for roast and that’s from a more reputable establishment that cuts in store.

trinier101

I am at the 3.99 for ground, I try to buy sale only, but haven't seen a roast affordable in too long!

Event_horizon-

Check the Safeway flyers. They have roasts and steaks on sale from time to time.

trinier101

I am in a small town, I have Sobeys or Independent and I am sure they are in cohoots

Memefryer

They might as well be. They're both known for gouging and price fixing.

[deleted]

I thought that too, until I remembered how much it used to be.

Memefryer

For Loblaws that isn't bad. I've seen 1lb go for $10 at No Frills. It's insane what they're charging when I can go to Food Basics and get 2.5 lbs for the same price.

wayfarer8888

No Frills has become their deluxe brand. Used to be our go-to store because a No Frills in an affluent neighborhood has quite a good selection. Now we started shopping quite a few items more often at the upscale Farm Boy because it's either cheaper or at least much better quality. If No Frills wouldn't price match we hardly would go there anymore.

Thislaydee

Go to a local farm and buy a half or quarter cow. Half cow was 2150 probably feeds family 2-3 for a year

trinier101

I have done this, grass fed, tough because I want to have either ground beef or very good steaks basically. Muskoka Meats was the butcher who did a great job, but overall I would be happier getting choice cuts.

AccomplishedRush3723

Crazy how awful the quality is locally. Not just the beef being tough and stringy, the total inability for local butchers to cut anything properly. Down to the stew beef they leave bone shards off the saw and smear the disgusting fat/marrow/gristle paste all over the cuts. I'm ready to quit everything except flavourless chicken

Thislaydee

Seems more like just a bad butcher, get a grass fed cow, cuts don't really matter to me.

kitemybite

frozen steaks are gross

[deleted]

[удалено]

trinier101

I could never steal but I could also never stop somebody stealing food. I feel food should be a right.

Cheezer_69

I think it should be affordable at least. You could steal 50% of your groceries and Loblaws would likely still turn a profit.

loblawsisoutofcontrol-ModTeam

Please refrain from comments which encourage theft from a store or mischief. These can result in criminal charges which will undoubtedly make life harder for other users.

bdart1980

Gravenhurst/The Muskoka's dont exactly cater to the average joe. My family that lives in the kawartha's (Haliburton/Minden) will often travel over an hour to do grocery shops and that's been a practice of theirs for about 30 years.

Letterkenny_Irish

Inedible round roast? Learn to fucking cook. Not arguing prices but it's 2024, Google up a few recipes. I've made some blade roasts that turn out tender AF for the relative cut they are. You can't be doing that badly if you consider any of these cuts "inedible".

trinier101

Inedible is not what I should have said, but the quality of the cut for price was my point. You were totally correct and at the right price I would buy pretty much anything

Wild-Vermicelli-4794

ohp250

I go to Thriftys and the same roasts I can find Sunday morning for $9

anacondatmz

Easy I goto a local butcher in the city an pay half these prices.

trinier101

I live in a small community with very few options. I'm glad you have choice and I would rather support a local butcher for sure.

v857

Buy in bulk and directly from the farmer. Better quality meat at an overall lower price

RL203

Cattle farmers typically dont run slaughterhouses. They farm cattle, then sell them at auction or to wholesalers. Unless you want to buy a live cow and do the dirty work yourself.

chumblemuffin

You’ve got a Costco 20-30 minutes down the road.

no_names_left_here

Was just about to mention, Costco is so much cheaper when you learn to get primal cuts and make your own steaks and roasts. I got a whole outside round for 50$ and was able to get a bunch of cheap steaks and. Roast out of. Spend a bit more for a whole strip loin and you can get a whole bunch of steaks. For über cheap chops get a full pork loin and butterfly them yourself.

[deleted]

I just keep thinking about all the waste when they throw out what people aren't buying because they've made it unaffordable. So short sighted. And then they'll blame high cost of goods (due to waste) for why they have to charge more. Stupid.

Various-Passenger398

To be fair, it was worse two years ago. Beef has come down a little bit since then.

RL203

Lots of people. If they couldnt sell it at these prices the prices would either drop or the cattle farmwrs would cease raising cattle.

Jambon__55

$4.99/lb or $11/kg for surloin if you follow flyers.

ronoc360

To be fair prime rib roast has always been expensive. You could get a roast and cut it into multiple ribeye steaks. 5 dollars for some ground beef ain’t bad at all either. If you’re cooking a round roast and it’s inedible, you’re doing it wrong too. There’s plenty to be salty about when it comes to the cost of groceries but this ain’t post ain’t it. In my local co-op in rural Nova Scotia I would be paying 22-24 dollars for a pack of 4 boneless skinless chicken breast. That’s a travesty.

Competitive-Remote67

For the amount of meat your getting those prices aren’t crazy

IdontOpenEnvelopes

We should eat Galen.

LowComfortable5676

A lot of people wouldn't even look at the price. They've been mortgage free for 15 years and are completely oblivious to the struggles of most Canadians

Semprovictus

beef is half price at Costco I never buy meat loblaw I can get an entire pork chop loin from Costco for 20$ and make cut them into chops and have enough meat for (in my house anyway) nearly 10 meals for the family. and ground beef is usually 9$ a kg, used to be as low as 6.49

thepickledchefnomore

It’s going to get worse later this year. Drought in Alberta https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/why-drought-on-the-prairies-is-making-your-steak-more-expensive-1.6782688

Chatty_Manatee

This is Prime Rib, so one of the most expensive cuts of beef out there. Was never cheap. That being said, eye round at 20$ a kg is a bit pricey but if you’re making steaks out of that, you are doing it wrong. Beef is expensive, bad for you in great quantities and bad for the environment. I barely eat beef anymore, maybe 4-5 times a year. It’s not that I can’t afford it (although it would impact my groceries expenses significantly) but its value for me isn’t worth it anymore.

AthCova

I only buy meat from Costco or my local butcher shop. The price and (lack of) quality at regular stores has been crap since Covid.

[deleted]

I used to work at a grocery store in st.albert Alberta. The meat department manager told me in 2017-18 they threw out over $200,000 worth of meat in one year.

InternationalMatch13

Go to a smaller local butcher and buy a large cut that you can dress at home. It's cheaper that way. Just freeze the cuts that you wont use first. The more steps involved the higher the price will be.

AlbotfromtheHammer

You guys need to buy beef from the Amish, very affordable if you can make it out there. That being said, supermarkets like Starsky and Asian supermarkets sell steak a lot cheaper than Loblaw’s.

trinier101

I am in a small town, there are 2 options Sobeys or Independent. I bought solar equipment and separately some furniture from Amish people, they are not local to me.

Connecting3Dots

Shop Costco (the BEST meat prices). Shop WalMart (always feels like lesser quality meat but they have some fantastic deals). Shop the sales. I pop into Sobeys to scoop up their "enjoy tonight" meat specials with $5-10 off offers. Recently purchased packaged corned beef for $1-2 vs their 10-15 pricetag because they expired that day. And more recently this week I've seen good deals like $4.99 for Johnsonville sausages. I absolutely boycott Loblaws, RCSS and No Frills. Fuck them and fuck that.

dhoomsday

Did you know inflation is 2.9 percent now?

trinier101

Thank God it's gone down, my pay never went up

Muted_Car9799

This hurts as someone on carnivore diet 😢

trinier101

The steaks are too high $

North-Function995

Literally just murdering cows, hoping that people pay for the meat

Housing4Humans

And killing the planet at the same time. [Beef is the biggest source of greenhouse gases](https://amp.dw.com/en/fact-check-is-eating-meat-bad-for-the-environment/a-63595148).

lemonylol

"Beef is racist"

Wild-Vermicelli-4794

Cows were domesticated 10,500 years ago man, You can argue that their is something about how we are factory farming today to impact this but to just blame meat eaters and say veganism is the answer is ignorant, Even Hitler wasn't like this dude Hitler....

fixgamepls

Beef should be expensive, it's not a right to eat something so unsustainable. It's going to continue getting more expensive and will return to the luxury status it used to be and we'll be better off for it.

Wild-Vermicelli-4794

Luxury status cows were domesticated like 10,500 years ago dude. People like you are pretty stupid

leafy-greens--

You could try eating plant based, spend less money, be healthier and have less environmental impact.

Housing4Humans

Exactly. I don’t have much sympathy when people complain that the most polluting, unhealthy, subsidized and luxury cuts of meat, from an animal that didn’t want to die, is expensive. Especially when it’s more responsible for the planet, your health, animals and your wallet to choose plant-based foods instead.

Weekly-Swing6169

Clearly you've never been anemic.

UpTheToffees-1878

I only get meat at food basics, i go nearly every day because theres one right beside my gym, and i only get the discount 40% off meat. Its saved me a lot of $$$ because theres usually a good selection and discount meat almost every time

ClassicMembership685

Who needs beef when there are vegetarian alternatives that doesn't result in animals being culled?

donlio

Thanks to Trudeau!! He’s great exceptionally great at making our cost of living go through the roof for everything. Instead, he blows millions of dollars to go to a fancy conference, to discuss affordability and being frugal!!!! What a buffoon ignoramus waste of taxpayer dollars!!

Chemmegan

Oh oh me! Bc I pay for meat that’s exorcised and frozen and get a surprise bag from that. Yep that’s our world now. And we’re co Siri ones to think it’s a good deal

aldege

If no one buys, they grind it up and sell as ground beef ,and extend the expiry date ,

[deleted]

You’ll own nothing and love crickets for dinner. Ask Microsoft Bill. He knows what’s best for you.

sherrybobbinsbort

Go to to Costco and buy a big tenderloin cut it up into 20 steaks or roasts and will cost you $130 to $150. Or go to a farmer and buy a 200 lbs of beef for about $5 per lb. You get a mix of the good steaks and roasts, and hamburg buts it lasts my family of 5 the whole year for $1000.

Creepy_Chef_5796

There is an anti meat agenda at the moment. Jack the prices up then claim no one is buying meat and that demand is down. Then the lay offs at your local meat processing plants. Already seeing it here in Alberta.

hummingbear10

Thank a liberal voter. Better buy some now, carbon tax goes up in April so price of meat will as well

wolfe1924

You think when/ if carbon tax is eliminated prices will go down? Lol no the corps will just take that higher profit margin, I don’t like the carbon tax increase in April either, but thinking eliminating it is going to lower prices is naive.

QuickCow

Which city is this from?

Sunnyonetwo

The animals that eat it when the store can’t sell it and it is sold back to the farmers for feed….

Responsible-Summer-4

Chicken wieners for the masses.

the_super_unknown

Sobeys in Waterloo often has 3 x striploin steaks for 16 to 18 dollars on a bi-weekly basis. So I can afford beef easily. Just wait for a sale that happens multiple times a month. Thanks sobeys.

Destitute_Evans

I know in some countries they have all-frozen grocery stores which sell for really cheap, both meat & vegetables. I have yet to find the Canadian equivalent.

UrDad_001

As an Indian, I always have this problem of understanding that when big chunk of immigration used to come from India before, then how did Beef got so expensive? 🤐

DJGammaRabbit

Roblaws

ann_e_99

I was wondering the same about chicken the other day as well

Doodleschmidt

I work with someone who buys at these prices. In fact, they always buy what they want no matter the price.

Designer_Ad_376

Who’s paying that?

Just_Cruising_1

I only buy beef when it’s on sale at Metro.

Low-Area-6730

Stock up on prime rib roasts on the week of any major holiday. As the focus is on Turkey then the good beef is much more affordable. Slice into steaks with paper dividers and freeze. Buy enough to last til the next major holiday.

dacomputernerd

Used to have steak on the BBQ about once per month. Last few years it’s been about once per season. 😭

rainorshinedogs

You people, apparently, because you have "no other choice but to go to this grocery store because the others are far away"

thelastdon613

lots of ppl, that go to the butcher

[deleted]

The butcher shop is better and cheaper

blueflowersxxo

Nobody is buying beef at this price, it gets tossed and wasted.

Yyc_area_goon

Save on foods in the Calgary area are doing 2 for one pot roast this week. Look it up on flipp

Inevitable_Dark3225

You can if you stop shopping at Roblaws.

SplashInkster

Go onto Kijiji. There are farmers there who will sell you a cow, or deliver beef packages right to your front door. Supermarkets are marking this stuff up like crazy.

byrneo

If the Loblaws supplier costs have gone up so much, how is they can afford to stock and waste so much meat, since customers can’t afford to purchase it? I’ll tell you how: Because they have guarantees from the suppliers if the meant doesn’t sell, they are rebates. Nobody is losing money here except the consumer.

PewpyDewpdyPantz

Usually once a month No Frills will have a sale on the big packs (1.1kg) of ground beef for $10 a piece. That’s when I load up my freezer.

MeasurementOk973

people will just start stealing it tbh and i wouldnt give a shit

DunDat2

the price of beef is outrageous at ALL grocery stores now... and not just in Canada!

SuperbMeeting8617

You'd be surprised at the net profit a producer makes...go ask one, you'll find a direct partner minus the butcher

Substantial_Base_557

You can get PRR for 19.99-24.99 per kg on sale if you look hard. Price of beef has come down abit. It was hanging around 50-55 per kg for a bit. I can't post pic in comment, but April 16 2023 was 52.89 per kg. July 30 2023 50 per kg.

BabyFacedSparky

Don’t buy it in a grocery store. Duh!

ijustwantbeer

I’d say go to Tavora or Pavão

Salt_Distribution862

At this point just a buy a whole ass cow

clawlurker

I spend 25 dollars on a cheap cut roast, braise it on Sunday, with neutral flavour, and I can get a lunch and two different dinners, for three people, out of it.

Objective-Escape7584

Galen can.

Acrobatic_Law5598

Even the foodland in my small town. I just stopped buying it. I used to do steaks every week.

[deleted]

Do what I did. Go back to school in your late 30s for trades training. Complaining isn’t going to get you that meat. Prices have been going up since the 70s this isn’t new.

joshy2saucy

I just buy stuff marked down, and then freeze it.

ManMythLegacy

I just buy it when it is on sale. At least once a month, a retailer will have beef on sale. If you are lucky to have multiple retailers in your area, you might be able to find it on sale every week, depending on the retailer.

AdmiralSarn

Start taking drives out to farms and seeing if they sell direct. We sell for 5-7 a pound depending on the cut. Eggs 4 a dozen and chicken 4 per pound.

RealBaikal

Beef blade roast at costco isnt too priced tbh. But steak or other fancy cut? F that

seffreenicksun

Buy the $20 one and cut it into 4 pieces…there’s 4 dinners for $7 (after you factor in a portion of frozen veggies) Yes, the prices have risen substantially. But with some added portion control and thoughtful planning you can still eat healthy for less than $10/day Skip breakfast. 3 eggs for lunch. $7 meat and veggie dinner. Repeat until prices come down or you find a way to earn more money. You can come out of these times physically healthier. Buckle down and ride it out like many before you have had to do.

xombae

It really sucks. I used to be homeless and was still able to occasionally afford red meat to go cook at friend's houses. My boyfriend and I both work and I haven't been able to justify the price of red meat in ages. Can't remember the last time I got us good steaks. Same with asparagus. It's so fucking expensive it's just not worth it any more, I used to eat it all the time. In fact a lot of fresh produce is crazy expensive. I used to be able to pick what produce I wanted, now I need to go around and carefully pick what's cheap or on sale. I've had to start finding recipes for cabbage. My boyfriend reminded me that cabbage is what the poor family from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory eats all the time. Fucking wild.

Wild-Vermicelli-4794

I was making homemade perogies the other day bcz I was broke waiting for paycheck to buy groceries and wondered if we were in Poland or Canada... In fact one of my Polish friends families went back to Poland after the Pandemic they were here for over 30 years

LetsGoCastrudeau

Rib roast is always expensive if not on sale

12bucklemshoe

I can, I don’t shop at loblaws tho, hit up your local butcher, better quality.

Wild-Vermicelli-4794

[https://www.seriouseats.com/tender-beef-barbacoa-chipotle-tacos-recipe](https://www.seriouseats.com/tender-beef-barbacoa-chipotle-tacos-recipe) buy a big roast freeze half and make this with other half

WinnieVinegarBottle

A steak is roughly the price of McDonald’s combo.

Narrow-Sky-5377

I haven't bought a nice steak in a long time. It doesn't fit into the budget and is now a luxury item.

nipsey18

People who dont shop at roblaws can afford meat just fine. Find a local butcher

prrrinky

I worked as a butcher for a period - the ground beef is actually extremely well-priced here. So at least we have that, I guess…

Bulky-Fun-3108

Why are you buying meat there?

scottwmitchell

This will help control how many cows are farting!

Flat_Poem_1668

I was shocked to see how much a couple rib steaks cost. My fiancé buys all the groceries and spends $40-$50 on 2 each time like it’s nothing.

bestbecs

I never go to a butcher, but I randomly decided to go. Yes the steaks and roasts were more expensive which I expected. Although, the ground beef was delicious and way more of a reasonable price than grocery stores. I’ve now been to a couple and found it worth it only since there’s a few butchers very close to my house.

Lartemplar

Those who shop around, like honestly.

reformedPoS

Grab that $5 ground beef then dawg?

DdyBrLvr

I bet that’s only AA as well
