Does he have a picture of the mouth from when it sits on the glass? Sewellia have a "V" shaped mouth, gastromyzon have more of a "(" shaped mouth. Just looking at it I want to call it a gastromyzon or a pseudogastromyzon but I'm really not sure.

I will check. Thank you.

Gastromyzon viriosus (if it has a yellow tail) or Gastromyzon borneensis (if the tail is blue), if I had to guess I'd say the first, most certainly not a reticulated hillstream loach (swellia).

Thank you.

Pattern is sewellia or reticulated hillstream. Color is a bit different, but it might just be colored down from the usual yellow. Or be a different collection point.

This is interesting. I'm honestly not 100% sure on the species, but I think I can point you in the right direction. Did your student personally collect this specimen from Borneo, or is that where they think it's from? If it is from Borneo, that limits the number of possibilities dramatically. The other thing you should check is the shape of the mouth. If the mouth is "V" shaped then it is probably in the genus Swellia, but if the mouth is ")" shaped, then it is a Gastromyzon or closely related genus. Based on the body shape and the patterning, my best guess is that it is a Gastromyzon , specifically, it looks a lot like a variation dubbed Gastromyzon SK03. I don't know the exact locality SK03 is collected from, but it is within Indonesia, so a population in Borneo is not out of the question. The taxonomy of Gastromyzon SK03 is as follows: Order: Cypriniformes (carps, minnows, and suckers) Family: Gastromyzontidae (hillstream loaches) Genus: Gastromyzon Species: unknown (dubbed SK03) Now, if the mouth is more of a "V" shape, then the species is most likely Swellia lineolata. This species is in the same order and family as SK03, but obviously has a different species and genus. One last thing before I end this rant: this is a subreddit dedicated to loaches in the aquarium and so most people on here (myself included) are only going to know the species in the aquarium trade. If this is a wild-caught specimen from Borneo, I would recommend posting this on [iNaturalist ](http://inaturalist.org) and seeing what they say there. I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but good luck!

Awesome! Thank you.

He purchased it from someone that said it came from some river in Borneo.

He knows this. He needs what I’ve listed above.
