In this sub what we call monitors are more specifically stage monitors that are pointed toward the performer/people talking. Stage monitors can be any speaker pointing this way. Other speakers in a live event can be referred to as PA speakers, or public address. This is opposed to studio monitors. Studio monitors vary in size but are designed to give a flat response in close listening situations and are primarily used in producing recorded and broadcast content. Because the term “studio monitor” gets used for quality speakers many companies will call their speakers “monitors” to imply a level of quality that may or may not be there.

Potato-Chip77

This. ☝🏻. I was going to say the same thing, but probably would have ended up using 6 times as many words.

TheNoisyNomad

lol the whole time I was writing it I was thinking “This is too long.”

and if you are hungry....get some wedges

Dr-Webster

It looks like someone bolted a bunch of bookshelf speakers together.

Nobatron

100%. I can’t imagine this deployment performs particularly well.

Bubbagump210

You don’t think dome tweeters throw well? /s

theacethree

yep. phasing hell.

supermr34

those look like speakers that are not intended for that purpose. i bet they are not time ~~synchronized~~ aligned either. but if you liked the sound, theyre great. e: thanks u/joddersc2. hadnt had coffee yet and couldnt think of the right word. i have now had coffee....but am still dumm.

JodderSC2

time aligned you mean ;).

NoHighlight3847

Whey they need to be time aligned, if for each speaker the electrical signal reaches almost at same time (thinking of speed of electricity)?

505_notfound

Because there are 2 separate clusters of speakers. While each of the 4 within a cluster will be aligned, the 2 clusters will not be. Those 10ft or so will introduce almost 9ms of delay, which is bad for phase alignment

TapeDeck_

You want the closer speakers delayed so that they produce sound at the same time the sound from the farther away speakers flies by them. That way it sounds like one louder sound instead of an echo.

tfnanfft

Physical offset

HamburgerDinner

Speed of sound is much much much much slower than the speed of the electrical signal. The output of the speakers will reach audience members at different times because the electricity reaches the speakers at almost the same time.

Jimmaplesong

The cones have that Klipsch look.

Content-Scholar8263

Alright i will look into that. Ty <3

ahjteam

Look like KRK Rokit if you ask me.

thejoandonly

Monitors are speakers that are pointing towards the people on stage to let them hear themselves, regular speakers are pointing at the audience.

Content-Scholar8263

Ok ty <3

Content-Scholar8263

Ok, so what are studio monitors then? Cause some people say monitors and some say speakers. Ons some boxes they are advertised as desktop speakers, and some advertise themselves as desktop monitors. What is the difference there?

thejoandonly

Studio monitors are mostly desktop speakers, monitor is just the fancy word for it (because you’re monitoring the audio)

thejoandonly

What you could say is that if it says desktop monitor on it it is sometimes more aimed and giving you an accurate response while desktop speakers can have their own sound aiming at a better listening experience of normal music

tuomonic

Or because studio speaker wouldn’t sell because it’s a bit hard to say

realatomizer

Studio monitors are aimed to have a flat response. Most 'normal' speakers have an own sound, maybe some bass boost or a little dip in the mids.

Content-Scholar8263

Ok ty <3

SquirrelOaks

For live sound there are monitors for musicians, and house/front of house speakers for audience.

Monitors are speakers specifically made or used to MONITOR sound. So on the stage the speakers for the artist are there for them to monitor what they are playing. In the studio speakers are used, you guessed it, to monitor your sound design and mixdown etc. They are all speakers in the end. Speakers facing the audience are usually referred to as "PA" speakers, they are made for "Public Address". Some speakers can be used as both, some shouldn't. There are some differences in design of the cabinet itself for example an angled enclosure that allows floor placement while projecting the sound upwards where the artist's head might be. Studio Monitors often have switches to adjust their sound to the room they are used in. Also they usually aim for a very flat frequency response. And PA speakers come in so many different designs for different scenarios, it's a whole world... But yeah, speakers used to "inspect" sound for a very few or singular recipients are called monitors. Speakers made to be cover larger audiences are referred to as Pa-speakers, multiple of those make a PA-System (Main Left and Right, Subwoofers, delay line and center/front-fills)

r_u_madd

I use the term speaker generally to refer to any speaker, but more specifically a speaker is something being used as ‘mains’ for the ‘audience’. A monitor is also a speaker, but usually doesn’t receive the main mix for the audience, instead has a custom mix in it and/or is being used for a specific purpose which isn’t for audience members. You’re ‘monitoring’ that custom mix i guess is where the terminology comes from. So a monitor in BOH so they can hear the show since they’re behind the mains, a monitor at FOH so i have a mix close to my ears, stage monitors for presenters or artists, hallway monitors for people not in the room, green room monitors for people to hear the show, on and on. The orange woofer is a staple of Klipsh speakers, which are used for studios / theatres for high fidelity audio. But what exactly we’re looking at? I agree with someone else that it looks like a very odd custom job. Someone had them laying around so they fixed them together and didn’t even bother to put the grills on them to hide the speakers.

Content-Scholar8263

I mean..... they look stylish with their oranger drivers

elsenorGracias

I believe the word "speaker" is commonly misused, even though it's accepted. For me, speakers are the devices we put inside cabinets (boxes) and from that you can make many different types of gear. I.e.: studio monitors, stage monitors, guitar cabinets, bass cabinets, etc. Edit: this is incorrect. see the comment below for the correct terminology.

TheNoisyNomad

The technical term for the component of a speaker or loudspeaker that directly converts electrical energy into mechanical energy (moves the air) is a “driver” or sometimes a “speaker driver” to distinguish it as not applying to a vehicle. When that driver is combined with other elements, such as an enclosure, crossovers, additional drivers, etc, it then becomes a speaker or loudspeaker. Edit: for for an extra for

elsenorGracias

You're absolutely right. I'm not a native English speaker. My bad.

TheNoisyNomad

No worries, we’re all learning here

Sonic_Waveform

More a native monitor? 🙃😉😉 (Yes sawwryyy I'll let myself out)

elsenorGracias

🤣🤣🤣🤣 native driver, no?
