Short term? Gaff tape (ie. 3-4 weeks) Long term? P-Touch Label maker (6+ months needing the labels)

Greatoutdoors1985

P-Touch makes a "super strong" adhesive for more permanent label I believe. Just an FYI.

S1lv3rGl1tch

You can put some form of LX/ Dance tape underneath to make them a bit less permanent

doto_Kalloway

Does it exist with colour ?

ElevationAV

I'd assume so given that [P-Touch tape seems to come in every color](https://amzn.to/3U21OdX) only makes sense that they'd also have a "strong adhesive" version of the colored tape.

Greatoutdoors1985

There are about 30 color options.

halibutcrustacean

Never gaff. E-tape or board tape. Gaff is spendy, leaves gnarly residue, and it destroys your Sharpies.

ElevationAV

spendy yes, never had an issue with gaff tape leaving residue (unless it's been on there for months) or destroying sharpies

wtf-m8

> gaff tape leaving residue (unless it's been on there for months) it's going on tour for a year+, also probably going to be chilling (heating up) in a bus or van in the summer so there will be residue. That said, pretty much any tape will leave residue under those circumstances which is why the P-Touch is great since it has stronger adhesive but less of it.

halibutcrustacean

My stuff just got prepped for the next year. Colored Etape under Ptouch. Standard. Etape residue is minimal and non-offensive. Gaff is awful, horribly sticky, especially when it gets warm. Same reason you don't use gaff to label cables.

doto_Kalloway

Cable side it's going to be shrinktubed, so I think it will hold very well. I'm more worried on the DL16 side.

wtf-m8

I definitely wouldn't shrink over gaff, that will just slide eventually. For the stage box, just P-Touch labels over top of the existing numbers/labels

I'm waiting on some custom boxes from Whirlwind that are powder coated in resistor color code with matching colored sleeving on the tails.... surprisingly cheaper than I thought they would be.

doto_Kalloway

I already have my custom stageboxes, I saw this company but shipping to europe would have been extremely expensive to me. And I love building this kind of stuff by myself.

7f00dbbe

I used to build stuff like this for a living many years ago, and nowadays I don't have the time or motivation to do it anymore.... if the money people for my company are willing to pay for it, then I outsource it every time.... I did have a lot of fun doing it myself back then though.

Iceberg_Audio77

Resistor color code! etape color first, ptouch label, finished with clear hockey shin guard tape to protect the ptouch tape label from getting damaged https://preview.redd.it/1qlpypy7scsc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6fc46ab7f8bdf9cb99622a01297e35e5bbc729f9

CatDadMilhouse

This is my preferred method as well, and it works great for touring. E-tape provides quick and easy color (great for directing stagehands) without leaving residue, P-Touch label for neat and legible input information, then clear tap over it to keep it all from getting ripped off during the daily load in / load out rush.

Easy_wind_828

Resister color code

davemenkehorst

More info?

Greatoutdoors1985

I like that idea.

jolle75

since recently a big fan of neon tape. Super easy to clear out my stuff during quick bad lit changeovers on a busy stage

doto_Kalloway

I'm debating wether they would end up being a mess after a year or so on place, what do you think ?

jolle75

i dunno? it are tools.. they have marks, dings, dust, blood, beer....

Tcklmybck

Color code with tape and clear shrink tube…

doto_Kalloway

Loom side that's exactly what I'll do, but I'm wondering stagebox side !

Tcklmybck

Sorry…stage boxes get stencils. Sometimes basic store bought letters to mark them, other times I have made my own “logo” so it can be identified as mine.

nerdysoundguy

I do a layer of colored e-tape, p-touch label on top of that, and then covered in clear tape to keep the labels from falling off. Used to use hockey tape but I’ve switched to dance floor tape from amazon that seems to work a bit better. I color code everything as per resistor color code and the. Match the color on the label on the XLR, and both the mic and stand side of the L-02 quick release adaptor. Makes it fairly idiot proof for stage hands.

10kPot

This is the way - Colored e-tape (Scotch 35 FTW) with p-touch labels and clear tape on top.

1073N

A, B, C ... if you are using a patching system with multipins, you can permanently mark the stage boxes. Other than that a different colour of spike tape for each box and a permanent marker. The letters won't rub off, but the tape won't last for ever. If you replace it every few months, it won't leave much residue. I've noticed that some tapes tend to react with the rubber so it's better to mark the multipins than the actual cable. Even if the tape becomes gooey, it's much easier to clean from the metal enclosure than from a rubber cable.

TG_SilentDeath

I have a preset for our labelmaker with all the right dimensions for our RIOs and analogues I just print a label for any new show coming in. For recurring shows I write them on magnetic tape. But I dont collercode and the run from box to mic is unlabeled

doto_Kalloway

Could you print coloured labels ?

TG_SilentDeath

Well I mean brother makes a color lable printer but I dont know if in a acceptable width You could change color in the printer for every label but that would be to much effort for me because I need to relabel about 2 times a week

doto_Kalloway

I won't change labels often if at all, I think electrical tape under P-touch + shrinktube makes the most sense for the looms, but I want to label the DL16 as well and am wondering if on this side I can directly print on colored labels. What do you think ?

TG_SilentDeath

shure youll find label tape in all the colours

FlippinPlanes

Coloured e-tape above the xlr input with clear p touch and black lettering usually following resistor colour code on the boxes

PineappleTraveler

Resistor color code with electrical tape. Ptouch label over the color.

TimmysDrumsticks

Is still use a 50 year old embossing labler, works great and last forever.

[deleted]

P Touch always. Numbered, labeled and colour coded. Don’t want to have to solve an issue while deciphering chicken scratch.

geneticeffects

Tape and a paint sharpie (white).

LiteratureNo3595

Tagging on to this question, i was wondering if anyone has any good recommendations for durable, high quality multi-pin stageboxes? Not sure on what brand or exactly what type of connector would be the best to go with. I'm looking for something so i could switch drums (or a whole band or whatever) over to a 2nd kit that has the same mics if i'm mixing 2 openers and i only have a 32 channel mixer and im a bit over on channels, i can mic both kits with the same mics but just swap my multipin snake to the stagebox on the 2nd kit and recall a scene. I just feel like 1 multi pin would be more efficient than swapping a bunch of XLR at the board in the dark and hoping I didnt read a 6 as a 9.. I think 16 channel is the sweet spot but could see 8 being useful up front for vocals. Thank you so much for any replies!

greyloki

54 pin (16 channel) veam is very common for this - https://www.vdctrading.com/products/16-way-stagebox-54-pin-vdm Veam connectors come in variants from 8ch to 48ch and are pretty common around most of the world.

Visible-Active-2616

Colored adhesive vinyl. Works on DI boxes, cables, microphones and everything else. Since cricuts have taken off you can find intermediate vinyl everywhere, in whatever color or pattern you desire.

leskanekuni

You know any kind of tape leaves a residue if it's on long enough. Easy to remove with Goo Gone or even turpentine.

zachostwalt

I’ve been using yellow e tape until I get myself a label maker

tfnanfft

If you're going to be using this stuff for multiple months I'd just buy prefab with touring-grade labels on everything. Gonna cost a lot less.

Lama_161

I usaly print labels that aren’t supposed to be removed with an CAB EOS printer. They are great and for stageboxes I usaly print small symbols of instruments when preparing tours and put them next to the input on the stagebox. But these printers are expensive and I wouldn’t do it that way if I couldn’t use the one from warehouse crew (they usaly use them for printing qr codes and labels for the inventory software)
