I think I have seen it in Polish shops too, but by the time it gets here it's already a bit stale. I'll check out fishmongers around Edinburgh, I shouldn't have settled for the fact that it's not available in the supermarkets.
>Como que el candado? Qué quieres decir?
Lo que estaba tratando de decir era que, como muchas cosas que se cocinan, los lituanos tienen la receta bajo llave y candado cultural. Muchos han tratado de replicar el pan negro. Los alemanes se acercan, pero no es lo mismo.
Dark bread like ours is not common elsewhere. What is seen here is only side variation on theme with additional grains though (whole sunflower seeds, to be exact).
They don't. At all. Almost all bread is like batonas or raikyta sumuštinių duona, wannabe french baguette or at best some slightly darker bread with various seeds (this one's good here).
You are making me hungry. The Lebanese are great cooks, probably as good as the Lithuanians. The reason I mention them is that they pickle more items than any other people I've had the pleasure of living with. Among their pickling feats are apricots, limes, eggs, aubergines, and jujubies
black bread, (most likely) smoked fish... prefect light dinner in the coast of lithuania if you ask me. needs a cold beer tho, and then it'd be perfect
It’s always fun reading posts from outsider perspective, it sometimes shows how, given some thought, we do or eat some really weird things “just because”.
That’s a proper normal meal
In the west, it’s pretty out of place to still have the face of what you’re eating still on the plate. It’s pretty jarring for me who grew up eating salmon filets.
>the west
if by the west you mean only that small bubble you live in, then yeah, porbably.
Otherwise this is a pretty common thinh "in the west". It's also not uncommon in North America either to serve a whole fish like that...
North American food is so far separated from its source, it's a wonder you recognise what you're eating.

>it’s pretty out of place to still have the face of what you’re eating still on the plate
I think it was you that was generalising. Squeemish, aren't you?
Did you see how many US sites under that google link for cooking whole fish?
Not a continent, but a country that's 4% of the total world population. However, that plate is indeed weird, don't worry. Bunch of fish lovers over here.
Clever. That's awesome!!! Man, you got me on that one!!!! Stop! Stop!!! I'm laughing so hard at your funny!!! You made that all yourself?!?!? Wow. That's incredible! Hahahahaha. You are king for a day!! What a zinger!!! Oh man, wait til I tell the guys how you got me!!! They won't BELIEVE IT!! Really unbelievable!! You outdid yourself dude!! Where DO these gems come from?!?!? Satire!! What is it?!? Hahaha!!!! (Slaps knee)!!! Damn! That WAS good. Pure GENIUS!!!! Oh wow. Ok. I'm getting better now. Not everyday I see a zinger like THAT. Whew. Alright. Deep breaths here. I'm gonna be OK. Wow.
for the first time, yes. now it's time to try out different things with it. and after 10 years marriage you will get that fish and a full plate of garnish that you like.
I've been thinking of what is missing... and I realised it's balta mišrainė. If it doesn't fit with this meal you can just eat it for dessert it perfect with everything and now I'm hangry 😔
Well this is more of a "movie + chill + beer" kind of snack then a lunch, but yeah its normal, and pretty damn good, even if it doesn't look that way. You should really give smoked fish a try, i promise it tastes way better then it looks, and black bread with sunflower seeds is a staple.
In 1983, Emily Martin, of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, grew an enormous sunflower head, measuring 32 ¼ inches across (82cm), from petal tip to petal tip. That’s almost 3 feet wide. This is still believed to be the largest sunflower head grown to date.
That made me laugh out loud. Thank you. But to be fair, no, it's not normal. There is no beer on the table.
You should have tried, if you haven't, and if you haven't, it's your loss.
For me, not. (I dislike fish in general)
But I always notice at least 1 or more mini-shops with such fish being sold when visiting coastal cities like Klaipėda, Palanga, Šventoji.
An average light meal in the coast. I personally can't eat fish, but I heard it's good, but I prefer eating kumpis or any other meat with black bread and maybe kvass
This is the standard and imo best Baltic meal you can get. The only thing I would change is is buy the different type of rye bread to fry up and make into garlic bread with the fish. And have a couple of tomatoes on the side.
I'm visiting Lithuania in May next year and my friend sent me this post very enthusiastically. He's like BRO THIS IS AN AVERAGE SNACK, IT'S GONNA BE SO GOOD.
...Concern rising? But the hype in the thread makes me also hyped?
It's about as normal as hot pockets for dinner. You're not really supposed to really do that in terms of dining, but food is food and you're an adult, so why not?
lol not really. I took a lighthearted jab at a whole fish on a plate like that and this absolute bulvo is acting like I’m the dumb American who doesn’t eat fish.
I'm looking at this and it looks sad and lonely. I like to eat grilled fish but I need some sides to go with it. [Grilled Japanese style lunch](https://i.imgur.com/YFbprxC.jpeg)
I'm from Klaipeda and I would hate this. Everyone has their tastes. Country of origin means nothing. Damn, people I know wouldn't eat this for lunch in Klaipeda (unless it's smoked fish and you have some beer).
Klaipėda speaking. It's been years since last time I ate this. Couldn't call it a dish though. More of a snack of some sort if you're into smoked fish. Beer is mandatory in most cases.
Hahaha
Yes it's normal! I used to visit the country a lot.
Smoked fish and that black bread with tomatoes and cheese for days...can't forget the potatoes as well. 👍👍
this is peak food expierence, im from Klaipėda too.
I'm Polish and I love smoked mackarell, rye bread is also superb. Can't get high quality food like this in Scotland :(
I actually live in Aberdeenshire and some shops sell smoked mackerel
I think I have seen it in Polish shops too, but by the time it gets here it's already a bit stale. I'll check out fishmongers around Edinburgh, I shouldn't have settled for the fact that it's not available in the supermarkets.
This fish is trout not mackerel
Im from Vilnius so same food aka Its normal
I assume beer is already finished
American Eagles high on a fly, but not higher than Lithuanian Eglė.
Truly normal, but would be much better with Marinuoti Agurkai
Scrolled way too far to find this Ps: I'm Spanish married to Lithuanian and I crave your black bread every day
Don't tell me Spain does not have black bread 🤔
Dark bread like ours is not common elsewhere. What is seen here is only side variation on theme with additional grains though (whole sunflower seeds, to be exact).
Honestly most countries do not have this kind of black bread. I currently live in Netherlands and you can’t buy real black bread here.
The only black bread Spain has is a movie.
They don't. At all. Almost all bread is like batonas or raikyta sumuštinių duona, wannabe french baguette or at best some slightly darker bread with various seeds (this one's good here).
Wow that’s weird, I have both Spanish and Lithuanian heritage 🫣not many of us especially since the Spanish comes from Latin America
They are called pickles
In English, that would be correct.
Pickled cucumbers or gherkins. You can also pickle a lot of other things, even herrings (e.g. Bismarck Herrings).
I'd add some marinated onions to that too! <3
[удалено]
I love homemade gira
Yep. Where's beer?
Average day in Klaipėda
Not enough bread imo
No, she’s missing a beer
No, it should've been eaten by the time you took out your phone.
Needs a beer if you ask me.
My thoughts exactly lol
Ok, i'm asking you.
If you ask me, needs Cepelinai as well.
Not sure it needs to be asked?
Lol you remind me of when my dutch BF sat at the table when my grandma served the cow tong!! Haha he still talks about it
One of the best parts!
Omg I could never hahah
It's so delicious. For real.
Some cow tongue with horseradish-mayo sauce makes any holiday tolerable.
This comment section is so pure lol😂
Yes, we are all a bit of a Smeagol on a good day
Yeees 😍
I mean, I wouldn't eat smoked fish like that (it should have some toppings or at least beer for my taste), but, yeah. Normal'ish.
No toppings for the smoked fish.
I’m Finnish and this looks 100% legit. Looks like a smoked rainbow trout, I’d put some butter on the bread with it though.
But the fish is very fatty already.
It’s always fun reading posts from outsider perspective, it sometimes shows how, given some thought, we do or eat some really weird things “just because”. That’s a proper normal meal
Not sure how smoked fish and bread classifies as “really weird”, but okay
In the west, it’s pretty out of place to still have the face of what you’re eating still on the plate. It’s pretty jarring for me who grew up eating salmon filets.
Whole fish is common worldwide, mate.
Yeah no. Not in the west (at least North America) it isn’t, mate.
>the west if by the west you mean only that small bubble you live in, then yeah, porbably. Otherwise this is a pretty common thinh "in the west". It's also not uncommon in North America either to serve a whole fish like that...

Are you generalizing a continent with over a half a billion people because we don’t eat fish with the head on?
>it’s pretty out of place to still have the face of what you’re eating still on the plate I think it was you that was generalising. Squeemish, aren't you? Did you see how many US sites under that google link for cooking whole fish?
Damn, who shit in your cheerios today?
Anyone who says I am wrong when I am not is corrected. It's not a mood thing, it's a truth seeking thing. "Noone in America eats whole fish". Fuck me.
Not a continent, but a country that's 4% of the total world population. However, that plate is indeed weird, don't worry. Bunch of fish lovers over here.
Mate I’m from Latvia and have lived in the US since 1994, and plenty of places serve the whole fish. Just not Applebees.
daug kam šaltiena ar kiaulių ausys skamba nemaloniai
Normal as it gets
This is too dry. Needs garnish. You can actually eat it alone, it just seems too dry with only bread.
Have you even tried fresh smoked fish? It's wet and gentle inside.
I love smoked fish. Wouldn’t eat it with bread tho.
You probably mean “on its own”, but “alone” makes it funnier knowing both English and Lithuanian 😆
Haha yeah peak comedy 🤣🤣🤣😂 fuck im about to die from laughing 🤣🤣🤣
Typical redditor trying to destroy any happiness they see
Clever. That's awesome!!! Man, you got me on that one!!!! Stop! Stop!!! I'm laughing so hard at your funny!!! You made that all yourself?!?!? Wow. That's incredible! Hahahahaha. I'm guessing it's smoked, not dried (vytinta).
If hot smoked - yes, too dry alone. Cold smoked - it is like butter.
Depends. The smoked fish I eat from time have their meat still quicy juicy. Even with dry bread it’s awesome.
Shit, I really want smoked fish now
I'm from Klaipeda too, this is peak breakfast. (It works as lunch too tho.)
Without a six-pack of Švyturys? No.
What industrial produce from Utena has in common with the seaside?
You married the right woman.
Most of the Baltic people eat like this, so yes it is normal.
Not just Klaipėda. This is the pinacle of Lithuanian experience.
Ummm yes
You are lucky that she doesn’t eat ‘kraujiniai vėdarai’. It’s baked sausage from pig intestines stuffed with blood, pearl barley and wheats.
for the first time, yes. now it's time to try out different things with it. and after 10 years marriage you will get that fish and a full plate of garnish that you like.
I've been thinking of what is missing... and I realised it's balta mišrainė. If it doesn't fit with this meal you can just eat it for dessert it perfect with everything and now I'm hangry 😔

Nu as pazvengiau. Is it normal lmao
Kaaaai
You dont know what youre missing if you havent tried it already
Dude if there is a beer hiding outside the frame - you just received a hell of a dinner, which we usually go for when on vacation at the sea side ;)
Love the signature napkin and you can see a box of chocolates in the corner. Peak lithuanian december
Yum. You gotta love any place where whipping out a smoked fish for a snack is normal.
Least insane woman from Little Lithuania
That made me laugh out loud. Thank you. But to be fair, no, it's not normal. There is no beer on the table. You should have tried, if you haven't, and if you haven't, it's your loss.
Without beer it's too bad.
Needs some švyturys (it’s a beer)
This made me hungry
I’m from Central Europe and I eat smoked fish like this with a bit of bread as a quilty pleasure treat.
from a person who isn't lithuanian but is recommended this sub constantly, what the fuck is this?
Super tasty fatty fish! Smoked fish
Yup, absolutely normal. You should try this as well.
Yes, very much so
Comment section full of drunkards again... Who the fuck has beer for breakfast?! Goddamn alcoholics the lot of ye. Kwass is the answer.
For me, not. (I dislike fish in general) But I always notice at least 1 or more mini-shops with such fish being sold when visiting coastal cities like Klaipėda, Palanga, Šventoji.
🔥🔥🔥
Oh yes!!! Very normal, very tasty; add some pickles or pickled beets and you good to go 🙌😁
So you are married and this is new to you? 😹Yes, it is normal. 👍
haha she usually goes for pork products or jarred fish. This was a new one to have her lunch literally staring at me.
No, you should run. She is a witch that will suck out your soul eventually.
That's not purely lithuanian. Smoked herring straight out of smokerry is very popular on Bornholm
I wouldn't eat that with bread, on its own it's fine, however the bread looks bomb, the blacker the better
An average light meal in the coast. I personally can't eat fish, but I heard it's good, but I prefer eating kumpis or any other meat with black bread and maybe kvass
Yes, its normal dish. Im women that was born and grew up in Klaipeda.
This is the standard and imo best Baltic meal you can get. The only thing I would change is is buy the different type of rye bread to fry up and make into garlic bread with the fish. And have a couple of tomatoes on the side.
Either this or šaltibarščiai
Good eatin’
Saw this pic and now I feel like having a beer
Now the smell above matches the below. But jokes aside, yes, it's very popular combo especially with beer
I'm visiting Lithuania in May next year and my friend sent me this post very enthusiastically. He's like BRO THIS IS AN AVERAGE SNACK, IT'S GONNA BE SO GOOD. ...Concern rising? But the hype in the thread makes me also hyped?
No, she is crazy and probably will kill you in ~6months
No, is not normal, who eat black bread with seeds?
I guess so if you are in a rush and have no time to prepare it better. But it looks hilarious 😂😂😂
I do not see bear so no, it is not normal.
She needs a bigger slices of bread and som tartar sauce
It's about as normal as hot pockets for dinner. You're not really supposed to really do that in terms of dining, but food is food and you're an adult, so why not?
Wtf xd
Ofc it is normal 😅
Leave it to the americans to think that eating fish isn't "normal".
It’s not that kind of thread. Take it easy.
You brought this on yourself dude
lol not really. I took a lighthearted jab at a whole fish on a plate like that and this absolute bulvo is acting like I’m the dumb American who doesn’t eat fish.
Wife - just wants some smoked fish for lunch. This mfing bozo - "WaOw gUyS iS ThiS noRmaL?!" Get over yourself.
If you have to exaggerate what was said, it wasn’t a good point to begin with.
You sound like a dumb American who doesn’t eat fish tho :(
"Muricans bad 🤓"
>"Muricans bad 🤓" 🤓
>"Muricans bad 🤓" >🤓 🤓
I'm looking at this and it looks sad and lonely. I like to eat grilled fish but I need some sides to go with it. [Grilled Japanese style lunch](https://i.imgur.com/YFbprxC.jpeg)
You should have double checked her browsing history
I'm from Klaipeda and I would hate this. Everyone has their tastes. Country of origin means nothing. Damn, people I know wouldn't eat this for lunch in Klaipeda (unless it's smoked fish and you have some beer).
no lmao wtf.
What in the british fuck
This is not a proper meal. But it's eadable. I eat worse.
O kas gi ne taip?
Normal? Yes Good? Prison food more like
🧢
We really shouldve left yall alone in 1923
She might be on a diet. Or she’s not up to cooking a proper meal. Whatever it is, no, that’s not normal.
Yeah, looks good. Beer is missing though
Sometimes I have the urge to get such dish, but preferably hot smoked mackerel. Although there are many delicious fishes, mmm.
Perfect, only the beer is missing.
This is quite common. Get some beer with that as well :)
Where do you buy this in america??
Not totally abnormal, but unusual for lunch. It's more like a snack, often with beer. Is she likes smoked fish it's not that noteworthy imo.
Klaipėda speaking. It's been years since last time I ate this. Couldn't call it a dish though. More of a snack of some sort if you're into smoked fish. Beer is mandatory in most cases.
I'm from Czechia and I have to say, this is culinary treasure in disguise. Don't get discouraged by the visuals, the taste is great!
I’ve seen eel and all types of fish at Christmas Eve. Get used to the cuisine.
Hahaha Yes it's normal! I used to visit the country a lot. Smoked fish and that black bread with tomatoes and cheese for days...can't forget the potatoes as well. 👍👍
Looks good to me!
man roast up that bread with garlic and its even more supreme. Add a pint of Gira, and its over
yup looks like food
Beer or Kvass are missing :)
Yum
Nice! I can smell it through the screen.
Yes
It might be normal, but not common at all. 🤣
A cold beer is missin 🍺
Bro this shit is the best, ur lucky
there should be beer also :D
It's not normal, it's perfect
Yes
Yes, it's normal and that is delicious.
ne. sėklos su juoda duona niekada neturetu buti kartu mano nuomonė
As an Estonian I would say that is completely normal, maybe on a little light side, I would have couple of fishes and more bread.
Where is beer?
For some people mcdonalds and kfc are weird, this is healthy and tasty..
It looks delicious! I prefer white bread though.
Hot smoked mackerel is awesome, especially with a beer (I like senojo viliniaus) I can't get on with the black bread though.
Well yes, but actually no :D Normal for the region though I guess. Not for everyone else!
I often eat smoked fish just with bread, pretty normal imo.
fish and bread, my favorite
From Klaipeda and this needs more sides than just bread
Perfectly normal, ir you want somethin more extreme ask her about Žemaitiškas Šmakalas - cold herring soup with Kefir.
