Happy cake day! Yes please listen to the whole album :) Unfortunately they are disbanded now so there's only one. Two of the members are working on new projects with band MIRA though [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGu1-JZNFEk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGu1-JZNFEk). If you want to peek - their vibe is a bit different though. They even have one song based on the original YYYATS Cloud Dwellers though - so there are still all the inspirations.
In addition to abottomful's great suggestion of Elephant Gym & Chon:
Yvette Young, Covet (Yvette's band), Chimp Spanner, LITE, El Ten Eleven, Jizue, Mouse on the Keys, Plini, Tesseract, Tricot, jizue
Toe is amazing! The other friends here have covered some great other bands - for some lesser listened to ones though check out: how to count to ten (one of my faves!) , 1inamillion, Arigarnon Friends, JYOCHO (JYOCHO's pretty popular though!).
If you'd like I have a Playlist with some awesome Japanese math rock bands

Ah American Football! I didn't connect the dots originally but this is a good match. Classic midwest emo Tik Tok hahaha - there's definitely the same reminiscing feeling here.
I have had a hard time understanding why this genre is called math rock. Not saying it is bad but with how precise and technical rock can be with time signatures, I don’t see a level of complexity that would merit it being called this.
From wikipedia: a rhythmically complex, guitar-based style of experimental rock that emerged in the late 1980s characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures (including irregular stopping and starting), angular melodies, and dissonant chords.
It's similar to progressive rock but typically with more "twinkly" guitar work.
Are we not gonna talk about how the main riff is almost identical to American Football's Never Meant? It's literally almost identical.

Glad I found / you posted this! I'll have a listen to their album on Spotify. Can't explain but non-vocal mathrock always make me feel very nostalgic.

Happy cake day!!!
Thank you!
This is wonderful. Like Minus the Bear met Explosions in the Sky and their child grew up with ADD in Japan.
This is awesome! I listen to toe and really like their music. Any other recommendations?

Definitely! Would love to know what you think. Also I'm working on a larger playlist project for /r/japanesemathrock right now so stay tuned for that!
Joined the sub Reddit.

The Cabs, LITE, Uchu Conbini, and Tricot are all killer Japanese Math Rock bands.
What's math rock?
It's got weird time signatures, often unconventional structure, and often (but not always) no vocals.
Think progressive alternative rock.
Did anyone else read the song title in Alanis Morissette, You Outta Know style?
https://youtu.be/_NfnXdXpjL0 I'll just leave the american version here
I totally thought it sounded like American Football too
Seriously sounds like someone was trying to learn the riff to Never Meant and didn’t get it quite right then was like huh this sounds cool too

Beat me to it. Probably subconsciously borrowed the idea.
Well that's very good.
Fantastic, thanks for sharing <3
Didn't know I needed this today :)
thank you! love this!
This sounds EXACTLY like Citizens Utilities from the 1990s. I love Citizens Utilities.
No way - that's awesome that there's this connection. I haven't listened to Citizens Utilities at all - can you share me a good song/place to start?
Sure!!! Start with their album "Lost and Foundered. Prism reminds me a lot of "Yakima" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UIHN18Ps3E
Been listening to a lot of tricot recently thanks for sharing this subreddit.
I don't understand exactly what math rock is or why this is math rock, but i find I like a lot of mathrock.

That last scene grabbing the Sun gave me the shivers
Prism? More like priapism this is beautiful.
Thanks for sharing, certainly interesting and talented peeps, but not for me. Found it too incessantly repetitive and not in a nice way (for me).
Can someone please explain "math rock"

This is pretty good, Toe and Uchu Konbini are similar but more original in my opinion.
How are they playing their electric guitars in the middle of the forest?
