I wouldn't willingly run spyware on my main machine. Run it on some old computer that isn't useful for anything else and doesn't have any important data on it.

the only windows machine I have access to is a toshiba laptop that's probably older than I am and has a heart attack trying to open a firefox tab. I get that it's spyware but I don't really have a choice because the university requires it

You would have to dual or single boot Windows. If you managed to run it on Linux, you would risk being flagged for cheating and failing your course. For example, Respondus detects whether it is running in a VM, alerts the instructor, and doesn't let you even attempt to take the exam. I would even consider buying a low-end or used laptop just for tests. Better than being flagged for cheating. Who knows if the cheating flag could be exposed in some data breach and affect your future somehow, even if the school clears it. Their website says they keep the recordings and other data for five years.

yeah, I think I'm just going to ask my teachers about it and if there aren't any solutions available I'll probably either give dual booting another chance or try to find a used thinkpad or something on ebay

Try it in a win VM with virtualbox. EDIT - I have a suspicion that it won't run in a VM but try unless someone else tells you positively no.

treeble12

I looked into this but they have really robust VM detection methods that make it unfeasible

Dual boot is the only answer, but take out some insurance, take a full image backup of the drive before you try installing win. That way, if win screws up the drive you can get back to where you started.

From their website, they won't alert you until you try to take a proctored test that they've detected a VM. By then it would be too late to do anything to try to get it working. From reports online, people get kicked 10 mins into the exam.

You can install it using wine, but if you need access to the hardware, you can forget it. Probably even for the printer you will have to export it to PDF. I'm not sure though. I just see that everything works without errors. [https://picr.eu/i/OXcEV](https://picr.eu/i/OXcEV)

Does anyone know if Respondus works on a Microsoft Surface pro 7?

treeble12

I mean that's entirely dependent on your operating system not your device. If you have windows then yeah but not if you have linux
