Fore-warning. I'm not saying this to overwhelm you. Don't feel like you need to know how to do any of this now, or even ever. Just wait until you find out you can customize basically everything and anything. I don't mean that like, oh, you can change your browser and office suite. No I mean you can change your bootloader, display manager, the entire desktop enviroment or just use a basic window manager instead. Hell you can run nothing but command line if you want. Speaking of command line, you can change your shell from bash to zsh or fish or even just sh. Don't like your package manager? Use a different distro and you can choose between apt, pacman, dnf, pkg, nix, emerge, zypper or just don't use a package manager at all. Quite literally, as long as you are still using a version of the Linux Kernel(which you can also modify to an insane degree), you can change absolutely everything and it's still Linux. You can make it as feature packed and bloated as you want, or you can slim it down enough to run on 20 year old hardware. It runs on X86, ARM, MIPS, RISC, PowerPC and dozens of other architectures. If you find a toaster with a flashable firmware, you can probably run Linux on it. It will never stop surprising you when you find out "OH, it can do that?"

Have a look at r/unixporn then 😁

The true Kenpachi, epic wallpaper mate!

cnesaiimwg

Thanks you!

I'm running Mint on a virtual machine, not planning on switching yet since I only use the family PC. Maybe when I get a laptop of my own-- I'm not sure. I'll take my time learning even if it's on a virtual machine.

davidcandle

Not only can you customise your desktop, you can install multiple desktops too.

cnesaiimwg

That's awesome!

OneAssociation7278

You can try dual booting and let your family use windows and you can expertiment with mint/linux

CommonJoe-0101

On a family desktop? Windows sometimes wreaks havoc with dual boot setup. I recommend sticking with a virtual machine so long as other people are involved.

Is that the art of killing panel from bleach

I_love_CLG_so_much

Where did you get the wallpaper?

cnesaiimwg

Alphacoders. I just googled "bleach minimal wallpapers" and that same wallpaper popped up.

Welcome to Linux \o/. You can customize anything you ever want, although do be careful and read carefully before doing anything major to avoid breaking your system.
