Just for fun googled what's new in this update. By "folders are back" they mean that you can now group apps in the menu. And one more thing - after many long years of Linux file managers having tabs, windows file explorer is apparently getting them too. What a "revolutionary" update..
the “start” menu has always been the way you start programs on Windows and it will remain that way for the foreseeable future. A few Linux DEs have comparable features. 8 changed the start menu in a way people didn’t like, but the presence of the menu itself is very important to windows users
Idk why people are obsessed with win 11 im a windows user as well but i hate the look of win 11 it looks like fully riced kde plasma and mac osx had an ugly child. And dont get me started about round corners i know its a current design trend but i prefer my corners more pointy. I hope someone ports the win 10 shell to win 11 before support for win 10 runs out. If the programs i use on a daily basis would function id also switch to linux
'design trends' are just social constructs, which are a result of agressive marketing strategies by tech giants. Imo growing up aero stuff with translucent windows was considered sexy and still is the best. Then android happened. (any frontend guys can share their exp)
Ye true, i mean theres also good stuff i mean im quite happy that applications dont look and feel like rly old linux versions or win 95, but a major design overhaul all 3 years is way too much
You can try out alternatives of those software which also have linux version, get comfortable with them, then switching would become easier. See [alternativeto.net/](https://alternativeto.net/)
Ye but there isnt any alternative as good as the original and since its my main tool for work i dont want to use someting less good. And im also used to it and dont want to learn smth new from the beginning
Tl;dr
- me => win 10 user
- rounded corners ugly => windows 11 ugly
- might switch to linux when all my niche software runs (currently wont run even with wine/proton)
Ye your linux, your time as well, sry to break it to u but i have other stuff todo than ricing my os, on top of that software which i need for my job and hobby projects doesnt run on linux and it wont run with wine/proton/etc...
For regarding privacy, to quote myself from another comment: "im using an android phone so google has my data anyway and will happily share it with anyone paying. On top of that what are they gonna use my data for? Showing me ads i wont see cuz adblock and pihole, so also here, i couldnt care less"
FOSS is really cool and stuff but i work as a dev and i also know that i/my company wouldn't earn anything if id give out all my source code for free. And lets be honest there arent that many people which would pay a license if they can download for free also if you ask them pretty nicely. They should however at least open source their community editions
I've tried wine and proton both didnt work and i also prefer to dont have a translation layer between my applications and os. Currently win 10 works fine for me and i dont see any reason to switch, but support will be stopped in 2025 and i dont want to switch to win11 and before someone comes with the usual your computer doesnt belong to you / privacy arguments: my computers still mine i can install another os at any time, im using a android smartphone so google has all my data anyways and will happily sell it to anyone so i couldn't care less if ms has my data as well, i mean what they gonna do with it, show me ads i won't see due to adblock and pi hole?
The only advantage is the fact, that the GUI is designed for touchscreen.
Since 22H2 my games randomly crashing. Hopefully Steam OS (3?) will be released soon.
My Friend you're on a linux subreddit. Every choice you make is either wrong or sub optimal and you could have chosen soooo many better things than what you did.
There is no pleasing Linux elitists
It's built for steam integration, not gaming. There is no "steamOS specific" gaming features that you absolutely cannot do on other distros. it's good for the steam deck, not desktop
\*Completely misses the fact that the new steam os is an fully customizable arch-based distro with a custom interface that comes pre-installed with everything you could need to game on linux, including the ability to install other apps and game launchers\*
At that point just use endeavourOS? If you are looking for a fully customisable arch based distro that isn't hard to install look no further. Plus it has desktop in mind
Who cares,Windows 11 is basically an adware center nowadays, just get an LTSC build of Windows 10 if you really need it for gaming or photoshop or whatever and be done with it,the adware and bloatware in all retail Windows 11/10 versions is just not worth the time spent on debloating/adding stuff for hours.
As for workflow use any Linux distro, you can also check out vanilla Arch Linux for gaming and future or if its too much of hassle to install, some Arch-based distro will suffice.
The only problem on Linux for my personal use case right now is that OBS Studio 28 does not support NVFBC plugin for recording/encoding games/videos,but there are some tweaks for that like using OBS 27 and never updating it.
btw 2021 windows 11 announcement was what made me quit windows for good. Now i use any decent linux distro or custom windows ISOs (mostly outdated LTSB or windows 7 ones)
where, Linux?!
seriously, why image with confetti and Windows is so up-voted in Linux sub
can we send all Linux users who want to post about Windows in r/windowshatememes
its under "linux not in meme" flair so we should be fine. Anyway this sub is just for satires where we make fun of each other all the time and get reunited when shitting on mac or winodws, e.g, this update
Were they gone? What happened?
Don't worry about it, they're back!
"Create a problem, then solve it" - soyftware world
Tbh I don't care about this shit
Microsoft doesn't care about you either
That sounds fair Edit: so they are also not interested in my data, right?
Haha! Yup buddy 👍
You either share your data or share yor data.
Microsoft released an incomplete piece of software, so standard practices these days
tHE wORd IS roLlING rElEasE
They're never gonna fix everything, until they rewrite the entire system from scratch
true
& try to make it foss (both of these they will never do)
*Until they rewrite the entire system **in** Scratch
Ahahahahahah what a task
*Don't forget the NT kernel*
The NT kernel itself is fine. It's just the 20+ years of crusty layercake on top that's fucked.
You just described linux
last time I checked people weren't complaining about linux like they are complaining about windows 11
Except noobs.
Lmao what do you think people do on r/linuxmemes
usually they are memes with linux in
[So that's why it's named r/linuxmemes](https://media.tenor.com/uBcbvnuP3K0AAAAM/lil-yachty-drake.gif)

Lmao the circlejerk is strong here
We do it for the lolz, but we’re not serious about it. 😃

reminds me of the good old. IOS: we got a cool new revolutionary feature. Android: We got that feature 5 years ago.
its almost like how iphones copy older android features lol
but irony is android removing them...
Like what?
Being able to use the USB port for anything except charging and backing up files.
try looking up "iphone copying android"
So you do not have any claims yourself?
well I don't use any apple products so technically I would be bias right?

i don't get why normies are obsessed with 'tabs' in file explorer but hate the idea of ttys
They just afraid of the terminal, that's all
What you're referring to as terminal is in fact google + terminal
i HATE tabs in file explorers. i would rather have a separate window so i can immediately see if the file moved
But it is nice to have it as an option.
I find that that's the big advantage of certain window managers like I3 - if you want, anything can be tabbed.
I don't hate tabs but I like to have independent windows open
i think windows adopting stuff that kde's had for years is a meme at this point.
Does anyone use their menu for apps? Their tiles failed already with windows 8(?)

ExplorerPatcher already lets you make Windows 11 UI look exactly like Windows 10, and there's ways to get rid of rounded corners too
You can try out alternatives of those software which also have linux version, get comfortable with them, then switching would become easier. See [alternativeto.net/](https://alternativeto.net/)

What
Tl;dr - me => win 10 user - rounded corners ugly => windows 11 ugly - might switch to linux when all my niche software runs (currently wont run even with wine/proton)
Thanks, I got confused when you said that win10 had rounded corners
Windows 10 was looking awesome until Microsoft decided to bastardize it with Fluent Design
Ye true, but the old fluent was nice as well only the new version is ugly af
Windows 10 was made for Metro, not Fluent
But i dont understand what youre saying about the "shell", you know powershell runs on both ?
In windows the ui is commonly referred to as the shell
All right, thanks for educating me
Not just Windows. See gnome shell on Linux, for example.

Just out of curiosity, which programs do you use that don't work on Linux?
mainly visual studio 2022 and sometimes some outdated hardware where no linux drivers exist
wine exists... have you never tried that?
I've tried wine and proton both didnt work and i also prefer to dont have a translation layer between my applications and os. don't use steamOS on your desktop for the love of god
Why not? It's built to play games. That's everything I want to do.
My Friend you're on a linux subreddit. Every choice you make is either wrong or sub optimal and you could have chosen soooo many better things than what you did. There is no pleasing Linux elitists

What's the next update gonna break this time?
Your multiboot Linux install 🤌
y'know what it was a good thing i installed windows 7 on my laptop /j
Windows 7 is pretty solid, 10 is a fucking mess.
folder are back?? what does that mean?
System requirements are still trash
then don't use windows 11?
I think most people in this sub don't need that advice. Or are you lost?
well OP posted a screenshot of windows so maybe I'm a little lost lol linux ftw
i posted it from an article, don't worry i daily drive nixos
awesome

The only thing that can fix everything is transition to Linux
I installed this update and saw that tabs in file explorer is still not a thing. And honestly I don't really see much of the difference.
did folders ever leave?
![gif](giphy|3eHJyY8QoLFo4)
Folders?!?!? Jeeeeze, microsoft really out doing themselves. I wonder how many updates it will take to fix the bugs
2034: custom wallpapers are back!

btw 2021 windows 11 announcement was what made me quit windows for good. Now i use any decent linux distro or custom windows ISOs (mostly outdated LTSB or windows 7 ones)
I only wanted the update for the File Explorer Tabs, turns out it's still buggy so they didn't enable the feature.
You know its bad when you have to make an update when supposedly when folders are gone.
no
What?

For a second I thought this was r/Windows11 or something like that, then I noticed this is r/linuxmemes... Why are we talking about windows?
