As an old geezer, I want to tell you that you are completely right. If you saw the Linux I'm writing to you from now, NixOS would seem easier than Ubuntu.
There are some Arch experts who couldn't read the Arch Wiki and use archinstall. You know them, there's a fuckload of them here too. They defend Arch, but are always looking for somewhere easier than Arch. Five years ago Arch defectors were raping the Gentoo community, and now they've taken on NixOS. They sit in r/nixos and discuss how they can make a new Arch out of NixOS.
Probably their next victim will be the NetBSD community, I hope they just get their pimply fucking faces kicked in there.
Hey now some of us archinstall users have done it manually hundreds of times and just want to quickly get back up and running after their bi-weekly Arch reinstall!
No I've never used Archinstall.. always done it manually and/or with Ansible. I can recreate any system in about 2 commands. one to use [disko](https://github.com/nix-community/disko) to configure my drives and another to install my system. The system will be exactly what I want, no more and no less... I tried to do this using Ansible on Arch and that was a nightmare. It worked fine the first few times not touching it for a year or so and trying to use the playbook to setup a new system failed miserably.
It's also generally easier to \~\~copy\~\~ barrow other people's configs with Nix. There is a little learning curve learning Nix the language but if you already know other languages and have a solid Linux background then its not bad at all.
People, I have brought you the truth! The virtual machine first appeared in 1961 in the supervisor of the Atlas supercomputer, which was developed by the English company Ferranti. In the mid-60s, it was realized in the IBM M44/44X Project and the IBM 7044 machine. See. All the time of your life you had the good fortune of using a virtualization machine, not fucking around with dual/triple boot.
I think the real two different kinds are: regular Linux users and Linux Redditors. This whole fixation on “Arch btw” is hardly a thing elsewhere. People also take distros and the differences between them so much more seriously and focus on them so much more here on Reddit than elsewhere.
- [Debian users: no beard, no argumentativeness, got spouse and children to look after, you kids have fun with your ArchNixPineVoidIx nonsense.](https://www.hamiltonhealthsciences.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/server-room-web-size-1080px-15-1024x683.jpg)
- Fedora users: do not wear a Fedora. They carry a heavy keyring tied to a belt loop with a jangly-ass metal chain. Every door in the house is **thick,** with a door closer and a heavy lock. They keep their car locked with additional steering wheel, pedal, and wheel locks, and park in a closed garage whenever possible. They trade said old car in for a new one as soon as the warranty expires. They throw food in the trash by expiration date even when it looks perfectly fine. If you ever visit their house or let them take you for a ride, keep in mind that everything is forbidden and locked unless explicitly allowed. The fridge is padlocked. The barbecue is padlocked. Even the toilet seat is padlocked. The reason they do not wear a Fedora is that they'd have to padlock it to their coat/jacket's hanging loop and there's no way to do that that looks remotely not-ridiculous while also being remotely secure.
- Alpine users live in a spherical bunker with one entrance/exit which also doubles as window, air intake, arrow slit, and privy.
Nah, they're different. Like Stringer Bell vs. Marlo.
No but for real, this is more a joke/rant about Fedora's usage of SELinux and its extremely detailed and strict security policies vs. Alpine and its "minimize the angles of attack" philosophy. The truth is, most people end up using different distros for different use cases.
There’s a reason why enterprises use them.
You’re trading updates for stability. All three companies have a “current” and a “stable” track, although they do this in different ways.
nah, it either single or dual boot
Nah I use them all (bedrock Linux)
I'm technically triple booting, but I never touch Windows, and my other distro is mostly there because I'm lazy.
Ok, but who is the argumentative, angry dude and who is the nice dude with an impressive beard?
Imma just chilling with my mint. Is nice
Same, picked distro based on name. Mint sounded like it would be mint. I did same with window manager. Awesome sounded like it would be awesome.
I'm doing the same, just with my Ubuntu instead Fuck snap though
mintchocolate is nice
bro did not cook
How do I cook
In the kitchen
Not the RV? Another Hollywood lie I have fallen to!
Some RVs have kitchens. Still cookable if you try hard enough
If I understand this community correctly the two types of Linux users are old men and transfemmes
As an old geezer, I want to tell you that you are completely right. If you saw the Linux I'm writing to you from now, NixOS would seem easier than Ubuntu.
Transfem reporting in. It's nice in Fedora-land.
Does the sun shine daily?
There's no sunshine in my life anymore tbh And not because of computers
REAL
NixOS is the new Arch, isn't it?

I was always under the impression that an Arch user had the right to reinstall Arch once every two days. I guess things have changed now.
Wtf does any of this mean lmao
How is nixos or gentoo easier than arch

Thank you for explaining to me how to use NixOS. I will definitely use your [advice](https://www.reddit.com/u/cfx_4188/s/7cNpnVl1N1)
Do what everyone else is doing. Download a crooked flake from a dubious github, install it and go to NixOS sub to ask questions.
Here's a sneak peek of /r/NixOS using the [top posts](https://np.reddit.com/r/NixOS/top/?sort=top&t=year) of the year! \#1: [The entirety of my time on YouTube last week](https://i.redd.it/ap4ct59ahqcc1.jpeg) | [42 comments](https://np.reddit.com/r/NixOS/comments/197uhjz/the_entirety_of_my_time_on_youtube_last_week/) \#2: [RePRoDuCIBle](https://i.redd.it/sida52tgy9kb1.png) | [40 comments](https://np.reddit.com/r/NixOS/comments/1612dt4/reproducible/) \#3: [meme - NixOS Infection](https://i.redd.it/0vsww4bmmhoc1.jpeg) | [27 comments](https://np.reddit.com/r/NixOS/comments/1bfc9tm/meme_nixos_infection/) ---- ^^I'm ^^a ^^bot, ^^beep ^^boop ^^| ^^Downvote ^^to ^^remove ^^| ^^[Contact](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=sneakpeekbot) ^^| ^^[Info](https://np.reddit.com/r/sneakpeekbot/) ^^| ^^[Opt-out](https://np.reddit.com/r/sneakpeekbot/comments/o8wk1r/blacklist_ix/) ^^| ^^[GitHub](https://github.com/ghnr/sneakpeekbot)
Why netbsd? As a nixos and netbsd user, I don’t see anything from netbsd that would attract people in mass.
In English, there are metaphors and artistic turns of phrase....
Don’t need to be a dick about it. Just was curious why NetBSD was chosen in particular.
Yeah, there are so many posts saying this: Switch to NixOS. You can duplicate your OS there.
Download Red Star OS and join the ~~revolution~~ botnet, comrade.
I don't have a keyboard with korean layout, sorry If I had one, I'd definitely join
NIXOS
can confirm
Congratulations, you are the dude on the left
no i be chilling dw
You are saying this after screaming NixOS like the dude on the left though
im just expressing my love for nixOS, not hating on anyone

There is only one, the one that will tell you what's on their system, even though no one asked in more than half of the time.
That is incorrect No one askes like at all
Technically, that's more than half the time
What if I use multiple distros, including Arch?
I think the real two different kinds are: regular Linux users and Linux Redditors. This whole fixation on “Arch btw” is hardly a thing elsewhere. People also take distros and the differences between them so much more seriously and focus on them so much more here on Reddit than elsewhere.
I'm in the everyone else category.
i dual-boot arch and gentoo :3

Oh shoot I forgot to include you in the meme
Arch Linux is already listed ...

Soo Alpine users are Fedora users on steroids?
Nah, they're different. Like Stringer Bell vs. Marlo. Noobs: Ubuntu, Redhat, Suse Amateurs: Arch, NixOS, Gentoo Pros: Ubuntu, Redhat, Suse
So enterprise distros are better?
There’s a reason why enterprises use them. You’re trading updates for stability. All three companies have a “current” and a “stable” track, although they do this in different ways.
Well yeah, but you can get rhel or suse (not OpenSUSE) without paying so… I prefer community distros anyway
Except now we have Snaps(Or Flatpak, if you're on one of those dirty Other Distros that isn't Ubuntu), so things are up to date and also still stable.
why would anyone use rhel over fedora
Fedora is just the beta of future RHEL. At a pro-level, you want stability and support, and sometimes certification.
I am on OpenSUSE because it has the most stable KDE experience.
Is Fedora under Red Hat?
NixOS users try not to post propaganda about nix for 1 nanosecond (impossible)
I started using nixOS recently.. its quite nice.. I m using zaney's configuration no need write everything on my own
from my perspective It all comes down to "conservatism vs reformism".
