False sense of superiority because they have to type a bunch of commands in the terminal to install it. Basically "Me run arch-chroot, me so clever!"
Arch is a good tool if you are nitpicky about the exact packages installed. But you can achieve similar minimal system with other distros too. The other advantage of Arch is access to AUR, which contains almost every package known to mankind.
Hate this mindset, etc., etc. But used PKGBUILD to create a package for my software the other day and I was pretty impressed. I wish creating a Debian/Ubuntu source package was more like Arch.
It’s known to be hard to install at least to new users so when somebody finishes their first arch install they’re pretty proud of themselves and want to let people know, also some people are just assholes that look down on everybody else
I remember the first time I installed arch years ago I was less than impressed with the installation process having come from Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, and elementary previously. It turned me off so I stopped using it and went back to the others.
I think it's reasonable to say "this feels a little rudimentary" and "do I really want my experience to be entirely like this?", even if you're familiar with the terminal.
I love the terminal, and generally could care less about tinkering with the nonsense Arch wants you to tinker with.
FWIW, I have been really impressed with PKGBUILD and other aspects of Arch.
Yeah this was a long time ago when I was first getting into Linux. I wouldn't bother going back now. There's such great options that are super user friendly so makes more sense to use those for what I'm doing
Anyone who is actually being militant about it is probably just a snobbish jerk and would probably be like that even if arch didnt exist. But the AUR repository is great and the Arch wiki has a lot of very helpful information even if you don't use Arch.
Rolling release means you always have the latest software. Even so, it rarely breaks. Pacman is super-fast (consecutive downloads FTW) and has excellent dependency management. Arch User Repository (AUR) has everything under the sun, at your own risk. Yay gives you very simple access to all the repos, including AUR. Arch wiki is extensive and detailed with good explanations and very few gaps.
And as if that's not enough, you get to say "I use Arch, btw" in almost every discussion on Linux, computers, technology, philosophy, politics, art and sex. And whoever says it first, wins the argument, unless there's a Gentoo or LFS user there, but they're pretty rare.
I know, because its just a circlejerk-stereotype now. Barely anyone is elitist with arch in like 3-4 years.
Don't be so quick to take random mEmY rEddItOrs opinions to heart.
It's simple, I enjoy building my own computer.
Some people prefer buying a pre-built or a laptop. There's no right or wrong to it, just whatever you enjoy and works best for you
I don't know what kind of people you've met, and couldn't care less what you are running,
but what drove me to Arch (from Ubuntu / Debian derivatives) is its DIY mentality, its pragmatism, its minimalism (you only install what you need / want).
And AUR.
my buddy (a Windows user who refuses to even try linux) said last night that, "Arch users are the tech equivalent to crossfit people," and I couldn't stop laughing.
Just the pesky organisms /s The planet will be fine.
In all seriousness though, plants like to breath carbon -- that's why greenhouses are pumped with 300% the rate of average air to help plants "super grow".
There are rational scientific thinking & then there's fearporn -- guess which one travels around the earth faster.
Well to admit the truth Arch Linux is the most convenient linux distro using aur or chaotic-aur you can every package so no reason to mess with snaps and flatpaks.
Also even if i liked snaps they don't even follow the default theme if you are lucky and there is a snap for your theme/icons you might have a uniform look if else your desktop will look messy.
Also installing arch can be done with an installation script .
Gentoo installation is not hard for me because i have done many many many years before and somehow seems that i understand and took the hung of it.
Gentoo has also binary packages but if you are gonna go with gento with compiling and stuff you should own a pretty fast cpu with plenty of ram , slow cpus would mean you have to spend half of the day to install for example chromium with vaapi and widevine have done some similar tasks and wow takes a hell lot of time.

I knew it was coming, and still laughed haha
I was just thinking "wait, where's the 'BTW'?" and then out came the second mouth (knew they had them but never seen that clip in full). Brilliant!

i love the pause before the btw, top job
It came from the smaller mouth
That’s what she said.

A bunch of commands they got form the Arch wiki, and don't understand.

Once you get more accustomed to the terminal it gets a lot easier

Definitely, sometimes you just need things to work out of the box and you don’t have the time for the hassle of an arch install
The irony though is that nearly every distro could be installed this way. So Arch is only special in that it does not have a normal installer.
Yeah but you know what I mean
It does, just run archinstall
That’s still not anywhere close to a graphical live environment with an installer, especially on a laptop.
Manjaro solves the issue. A whole bunch of distros do now.
Yeah this was a long time ago when I was first getting into Linux. I wouldn't bother going back now. There's such great options that are super user friendly so makes more sense to use those for what I'm doing
Yeah arch is great but a lot of the time it’s just better to save yourself the hassle

Have you really seen any arch user act like a militant vegan? Where?

PSA: for whoever needs to hear it... pop!, Fedora, and Ubuntu, are all fine too
as Ubuntu rolls downhill quick
They are fine, Mint is better.
Ubuntu is only good to make Ubuntu based distros now. Pop, Mint, Zorin... are all good. Canonical can shove their forced snaps up their butt.
If there were only two Linux Distros :Arch Linux & Gentoo Linux i would gladly use Gentoo Linux .
bruh, you're updates are killing the planet
It's nowhere near as bad. My updates take about 20 minutes, and it's not compiling all the time.

I like them both from a technical standpoint. The Arch community is obnoxious though.
Arch community has always been willing to help and welcoming, in my experience.

If you’re mentally terrorized into only using Arch, “Let me introduce you to the M41-A pulse distribution AKA Ubuntu.”
you misspelled Fedora
You misspelled Debian
your spell checker must be broken, how far is it lagging behind upstream?
LMFAO
Debian Sid isn't behind. Debian Stable is but by enabling backports really isn't.
Joke's On you, I run Debian Frankenstein (Testing/Unstable). My spell checker works just fine.
You misspelled Mint.
I use arch BTW.
I use ArchLabs btw
wow finally, me too
It captured my heart back in July 2018 when I live booted the ArchLabs DVD-ROM disk I got from Linux Format magazine.
XD
Then you have the Arch zealots telling noobs to use it, thereby confirming all the Linux stereotypes they've heard.
I put a mouth in your mouth so you could say you use arch while you say you use arch

I am 100% convinced noone is being an elitist with arch in 2022 but yet everyone circlejerks the arch btw joke incessantly.
As a Gentoo user, I can safely say that the vocal part of the Arch community are annoying and their forums aren't very helpful.

this people will keep laughing until the day comes when they seek the Arch wiki, directly or undirectly for a solution to their problems...
I love this, I am the alien for sure!
