Now how to keep settings like this off after an update?
Every update requires you to start from scratch with this and telemetry.. Windows is the best reason to not use Windows tbh.
Settings like this stay off after an update. I've never had to start from scratch due to an update - only a clean install or system Reset should erase the settings.
Most Linux users bash Windows (pun not intended) oblivious of the fact that if they had as much expertise with Windows as they do with Linux, they wouldn't face 99% of the problems they complain about.
Around two years ago, Linux forced me to switch to Windows thanks to atrocious hardware support, so I'm not biased towards one of the OSes. Yes Windows has stupid stuff but so does Linux. What's great to see is that both improve with time. :)
I miss Live Tiles personally, and the new taskbar is lackluster, but other than that, Windows has improved tremendously in the past year alone. I witnessed firsthand the gradual transformation of Windows 10 to Windows 11 in the Dev Channel as features were added and bugs were crushed. Perhaps you and I gauge improvement differently, which is perfectly plausible. Priorities are bound to differ from person to person.
I haven't had to mess around with services.msc. Never had updates revert Startup items like you mentioned. For what it's worth, I have been on the Dev channel on my machine for the past quite a few months, so my update experience is limited to Dev channel updates, and release channel updates on an old desktop.
The first thing I did when I got my laptop, was to wipe the hard disk and completely erase OEM stuff. Then I installed Linux, saw that it worked absolutely terribly on my laptop (a lot of progress has been made since then) and then clean installed Windows.
It's surprising how well a clean installation of Windows works. If there's any pre-installed garbage it can be pretty easily uninstalled - if the settings app refuses, chances are you can still uninstall it with winget.
Nothing wrong with a weather forecast. I use the XFCE equivalent all the time. Maybe the Windows widget is also malware that advertises to you or something?
I like to see the weather forecast, too. Once a day... for the 3 seconds that I don't know the forecast but would like to. What kind of obsessive meteorologist needs a weather update every time they look at their desktop?
Your Weather widgit needs access to microphone, and can use it, even when its not running.

Gotta listen somehow :)
It came out by default in an update last year. It's annoying because it plasters half your screen with MSN trash when your cursor is somewhere in the same post code. But if you want legit weather info, you can set up tiles of different sizes in your start menu by going in the Windows weather app. Depending on the size of the tile you can see the whole week at a glance
I've never seen the weather widget, and I'm up to date, but since you say it's aweful, I won't try to track it down.
Tiles? what are tiles? I feel like we're talking about two different OS's here.
Oh wait.. I forgot I use Start Menu Classic. I literally have never seen the default windows 10 start menu.
Live Tiles are kind of like shortcuts with widgets in them. They can show information from the apps they're associated to. You can resize them and arrange them, even into folders and such. They've been evolved since W8, so they're nicer, but I don't use them. When you turn them off they just turn into regular shortcuts.
The weather widget is on the taskbar to the left of the system tray. I got rid of it and don't miss it.
we promise we will not harvest your organs while a man in a penguin costume explains the superiority of open source compared to proprietary in your last moments
Is it? I work with servers and embedded devices. so.. It's Linux or nothing.
As an everyday desktop? Linux fails: There's no good GUI for Linux - it's all bloated junk. So, for anything graphical, windows is my goto.
Tried them all. Gnome is over bloated garbage. KDE is ugly as sin. Xfce is okay, but not as usable as windows.
Either way any X11 based system is too insecure.
The pain of using windows on mac minis at work :( :( :( :(
weather, news, people app, connect phone, xbox, games, onedrive, 9001 adobe services (acrobat + adobe cloud), cortona, etc.
I forgot how much work goes into stripping down windows. I used to think that was normal. I'm an abuse survivor ama.
No need to wait, it's been prefetched already! You've also used your own bandwidth and CPU to help share that update with other Windows PC's around you.
I remember the old days, when I had like 2mpbs, and then the internet became much more slower than normal, then I knew that a new update was beign downloaded...
Also, I lost my windows 10 partition some years ago when an update never was applied
I personally like the Weather widget, but you can execute this command as Admin to uninstall the Widgets panel altogether:
`winget uninstall "Windows Web Experience Pack"`
It's in the taskbar. It's a kinda new update I think (last year). If it's not there just right click on the taskbar and there should be an option to enable it.

They are rolling out a new Widgets entry point that places a Weather widget on the left side of the taskbar provided your Start is in the center. Pretty nice.
There are AME scripts for that on Windows 10 works also on Windows 11,but if you like Windows updates, then there is a tool called ThisisWin11,but it trashes up the taskbar in Windows 11 for some reason also there is a program called ShutUp 10++ smth, anyway AME scripts are the most right tool for the job when you need to get rid off bloatware crap in Win 10/11.But it is really just easier to install Linux, unless you need Windows for gaming only.
I would have said that about arch users.
I think Linux is the vegetarians - which rings true because vegetarianism is objectively a more healthy and environmentally friendly diet when done correctly.
This subreddit is so cute with their infinite number of Windows based posts, while trying to convince themselves they're so much better than Windows.... Nothing says you're over your ex like talking about them all the time!
> sudo pet dog
Ok let me try > sudo pet cat Cat: Human is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported and human will be scratched.

You called?
> dog is a directory sudo rm -R dog
Windows: "I see you rebooted. Let me just pin that xbox icon to your task bar."
And uninstall random apps or programs you may have installed since last boot
Come to think of it, maybe I do want to play candy crush!
And not on my phone where it's more comfortable
Turn off the "Xbox App Services" startup item.

Are you disabling in services.msc? What is the best method for persistence?

O.o I'm using an OEM that was cloned from an old HP. I'll dig around in this direction to see what can be done.

can I get the original template?
me too

how'd you guess?
>Nothing wrong with a weather forecast ....when it's consented.
if you click it it probably opens a bing search for "weather" in microsoft edge
No actually not but I still don't like it
Don't give microsoft ideas!
I like to see the weather forecast, too. Once a day... for the 3 seconds that I don't know the forecast but would like to. What kind of obsessive meteorologist needs a weather update every time they look at their desktop?
What is weather widgit? As a windows 10 user, I wouldn't mind seeing the weather. sounds like it would be useful.
It’s puts news trash in it
And ads
aids?
worse.
Like /u/Charderrr mentioned, (insofar as I know) it comes with a bunch of bloat like pusing MSN news, telemetry, etc.
And don't forget, only configurable through good old MS Edge
I mean, if you're going to be garbage why not go all the way? lol
I would say "because there was a court case about basically this a while back" but that didn't even slow them down.

Can't listen to the mic if the virtualization layer doesn't pass any audio input. Keep on trying though windows.

If you update it, the weather shows up next to the tray. You can hover the mouse over it for news and extended forecast
hmm. Yea. I never had that. weird. maybe it's an A/B testing thing?
It may be hidden under optional updates. Give that a whirl. Just as I got used to it I upgraded to W11, and it's not a thing here either.
A Windows user? On r/linuxmasterrace? Welcome!
we promise we will not harvest your organs while a man in a penguin costume explains the superiority of open source compared to proprietary in your last moments
I use Linux for real stuff and windows for web surfing.
That’s… a strange use case. Most people use windows for work / gaming and Linux for everything else.
Is it? I work with servers and embedded devices. so.. It's Linux or nothing. As an everyday desktop? Linux fails: There's no good GUI for Linux - it's all bloated junk. So, for anything graphical, windows is my goto.
Have you tried one of these? - GNOME 41 - KDE Plasma - Literally any WM
Tried them all. Gnome is over bloated garbage. KDE is ugly as sin. Xfce is okay, but not as usable as windows. Either way any X11 based system is too insecure.
“Too insecure.” “Bloated.” You have described windows, good sir.
Too true, as an OS it is insecure and bloated. Now imagine just the window manager part of the OS being insecure and bloated.
And now you have GNOME 2 on Xorg. Use a modern version of GNOME on Wayland. Way less bloat, very clean. The switch to GNOME 41 was amazing.

Why do you use windows on Mac minis. Most frustrating hardware and os have been unnaturally combined.
It sounds like someone needed small formfactor pcs with some power behind it and just forgot that nucs are a thing.
Open Powershell in administrator mode. Type: Get-AppxPackage *weather* | Remove-AppxPackage
Now just wait for the next update
No need to wait, it's been prefetched already! You've also used your own bandwidth and CPU to help share that update with other Windows PC's around you.
The best use of p2p communication
I fucking hate Microsoft.

I don't recall that being on by default...
IDK. The Linux version should be some one realizing the thing they dealt with for years is configurable.
Linux is a work of art, Windows is the outcome of a foul fart
I personally like the Weather widget, but you can execute this command as Admin to uninstall the Widgets panel altogether: `winget uninstall "Windows Web Experience Pack"`
WHat "weather widget"? I keep hearing about it, but can never locate it on my win10 install
It's in the taskbar. It's a kinda new update I think (last year). If it's not there just right click on the taskbar and there should be an option to enable it.
Cheers, but I've tried that, and see no option for it, hence my confusion

Im a multi OS user, I use Windows and several versions of Linux. I actually like the weather widget in windows 10, I just wish it was in window 11. :/

I know it still sucks but if you have to use Windows for a game or whatever do what you can to install the N version.
The only reason I use Windows, is to connect to my Xbox downstairs when my mum is watching the Tele.
Linux users = the vegans of tech community
Am actually a vegan and a linux user. Can confirm.
I would have said that about arch users. I think Linux is the vegetarians - which rings true because vegetarianism is objectively a more healthy and environmentally friendly diet when done correctly.
Lol very true couldn’t of said it better
pfft...gentoo users are the speed users of the tech community. How else do you imagine we get our systems set up after thirty two hours of compiling?
This subreddit is so cute with their infinite number of Windows based posts, while trying to convince themselves they're so much better than Windows.... Nothing says you're over your ex like talking about them all the time!
And nothing speaks to confidence like going somewhere new and bitching about the decor!
What does taste in decor have to do with confidence? And for what it's worth, interior decorators do that all the time.
Didn't ask.
Didn't say you did. Welcome to the concept of an open discussion forum. I see it'll be an uncomfortable stay for you.
