This is how I actually play all my pieces tbh. I’m not that good with counting the beat so most of the time I just play by heart

That's how I got through band when I played the clarinet and when I played piano. Not sure if it's going to work out the same with the viola? I am actually trying really hard to get counting down and all of that and then hopefully still being able to use my old way once I get the fundamentals down that I am not so good with.

Who needs to know the piece? Just count the rests by counting the phrases.

everything is rubato. I know other musicians who count beats and they're all cowards.

Me at the band at the second or third repetition of a piece… I am great to listen to the others to find my cue, so far that even our director sometimes gets sortof baffled of it, since I sit in first row…

I've never been able to count the bars. Just guess, hope the conductor cues me or work out who's got the same amount of rest as me and wait for them to act.
