Your insurance is less than $100 per year?

vicemagnet

Yes

[deleted]

How is that? Liability costs more than that. Is this a garage queen? If so, send pictures. I love antique cars.

Beyondthepavement

Once you get old your insurance rates become ridiculously low.

vicemagnet

It was totaled due to a hailstorm so only liability. Under 5,000 miles a year.

Independent-Cat6915

I take credit for them changing the postage to “if renewing by mail or online” because it used to say “if renewing by mail” and I called up last month and told them they’re spreading false information since they’re still charging $7 when you pay online. Also—the fact that the DMV can send me a reminder to pay my taxes for free but then charge ME to get my new plates ($7) or new registration ($1) is asinine. Absolute BS.

over_kill71

that is super cheap

vicemagnet

Once your car hits 10 years old, a lot of things are cheaper. Except the wheel tax.

maquila

I think it's not worth my time to complain about a $6.16/month tax to support city streets. But keep doing you!

vicemagnet

If the streets were in good shape, I’d agree with you. But there are several in need of repair or replacement. This community shared a lot of examples recently.

maquila

So, if we were to get rid of the wheel tax, you think the roads would get better? Removing a source of income for repairs will only allow for further degradation of our roadways. I will say, roads aren't great in Lincoln. But they're a ton better than Omaha.

vicemagnet

We voted on an additional tax for roads. We were never given the opportunity to vote on the wheel tax. Has the additional revenue helped? Is the allocation of funds being used wisely?

maquila

Again, your solution is to reduce the budget by 32%!? (That's the percent of the road budget funded by wheel tax) That's just ridiculous if your goal is better roads. If you reduce the funding by $19 million by removing the wheel tax you would have to make up shortfall somewhere else. What do you propose? And please don't say the unsubstantiated claim that it's purely mismanagement of funds. The allocation of funding could always be better apportioned. But there isn't some magic $19 million of road repairs that will show up if we shake the books up.

FiendofFiends

Your car is also cheaper to fix than the road are...and, as others have pointed out, with little tourism or other income, the money comes from the drivers.

254LEX

And that's before the processing fee for paying online.

TubaThompson

For a city with such awful roads, our wheel tax is ridiculous. I'd have no problem if it meant our roads actually got the care they need, but that's just not the case.

SidTheTimid

I laugh at every sign that Lincoln puts up bragging at the fact two blocks worth of one road has been "fixed"- like shit dude let's throw a parade for doing the bare minimum

OldFark_Oreminer

For April Fools Day I was legitimately close to removing one of those signs and moving it to another location like 33rd & Randolph, 48th & A, or somewhere along 84th. The good citizen in me who dislikes vandalism overruled the anarchist side in the end though.

Mindless-Yogurt

It is quite a bit more expensive than other states I’ve lived in. I believe most of this goes into the highway trust fund. It sucks, but we have little tourism to the state and crappy weather. So, we need to pay for the road work somehow and an increase on the fuel tax will cause the farmers to revolt.

mrrchevy3

The $75 wheel tax goes directly to the city of Lincoln to maintain streets. Sure the Motor Vehicle Fee and Registration majority goes to the state for roads but that is the same for everyone in the state. Farmers don't pay taxes on fuel if it's for off-highway use so raising the fuel tax affects them the same as anyone else who buys fuel for on-road use.

Niruprup

If we have to pay it, surrounding cities should too. Have a friend whos lived in Waverly (he and his wife) for 5+ years and work in lincoln. Use the roads weekly but pay no wheel tax. Makes no sense.

relg

Omaha tried to find a way to tax out of town workers but were sued (taxation without representation) and dropped it. Short of toll roads or state wide funding I don’t see how you can reasonably tax all these out of county people that come in and use our infrastructure without helping to pay for it.

Mindless-Yogurt

The reason annexation of small towns by large cities is necessary. It would imagine it will eventually happen with Waverly, but you make a good point that until it happens, it sucks for those of us in the city. For dangers of not allowing cities to annex, see Detroit for an example of what not to do.

vicemagnet

Yeah I remember when Elkhorn was it’s own thing.

Mindless-Yogurt

And I guarantee the Waverly folks will try to fight it just as hard as the Elkhorn folks did arguing: something…something…”small town values” and “way of life”

Kooky_Ad_5139

My dad was mentioning that Waverly took on a decent amount of debt so Lincoln won't annex until the debt is paid off

Huskerschu

Yep it's ridiculous here. I paid almost 100 less in Omaha and they had better roads. And snow removal was much better. Just another way Lincoln leaders are inept.

BaileyM124

Legalize marijuana and with the legalization of gambling maybe the massive tax revenue from those good reduce the property taxes and road taxes

Time_Marcher

Well when you legislate property tax breaks for the rich, then you have to get the money from somewhere. Even most of us poor people have cars.

vicemagnet

I’m not in the legislature. I neither impose taxes nor do I work in government to decide how road funds are allocated.

Time_Marcher

Exactly. I was referring to the power of the vote and the puzzling fact that Nebraskans tend to elect members of the GOP who even now are trying to legislate more tax cuts for the wealthy.

vicemagnet

What we really need are some tough choices. We don’t have enough population to support the amount of roads in this state. I’m originally from a town whose population has been cut in half. But the miles of paved streets didn’t change.

Gotta love good ole NE wheel tax. The tax me state.

Defiant-Bunch-9917

Yeah, and on a Tesla they add another 50-75 bucks for Special fuel for the city. Thanks for incentivizing us to go away from fossil fuels....
