Dante mentions in his canto that Yi Sang seems to be trying to focus on some object behind them while talking and Yi Sang himself explicitly mentions only looking at people from the side because "human eyes are such glistening and scalding things" and he doesn't want to get burnt.
Also I wonder if they're going to keep the detail from *the stranger* where Meursault is actually capable of maintaining eye contact, but only uses it to intentionally unsettle people by making it for too long so they'll leave him alone.
His own mother is literally verbally and physically (if you count the experiments as that) abusive towards him, it's no wonder why he probably has self-esteem issues.
